  • During our visit to Beaufort West, we decided to break the tradition of just passing through and instead stayed overnight to truly explore the town. We were very happy with the sight of a rail bridge spanning the river on the outskirts, a charming introduction to the area. However, our excitement grew even more when we saw an old blockhouse from the Anglo Boer War, a fascinating relic of history. Determined to make the most of our time, we hurried to see the old church before darkness fell, managing to squeeze in one last highlight of the day. With supper purchased, we retreated to our cosy accommodation, eagerly anticipating the adventures that awaited us the next morning. Our first stop was the birthplace of the renowned Prof. Chris Barnard, the pioneer of the first-ever heart transplant. The museum and the house where he grew up proved to be an incredible journey through medical history. Sadly, filming wasn't allowed in the museum, but the wealth of information on heart transplants left a lasting impression. As we explored further, we were treated to a view of the town's station and its collection of vintage equipment, providing a glimpse into Beaufort West's railway heritage. Our visit to Beaufort West was a memorable experience, filled with historical landmarks and a deep appreciation for the town's significant contributions to history. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #westerncape #beaufortwest

It brought back so many memories of 1970 to 1978 when i lived there. Those years i was still young and beautiful!. Glad the town is in good shape. Waiting for the next one in my usual seat.

      I had no idea that you spent so many years there and experienced so many significant life events there, wow! You must know this town inside and out and I can only imagine the changes you've seen over the years, compared to the seventies when you lived there. I have no doubt that you're still as beautiful as ever, just like the town. 😁 I shall pick you up bright and early again on Saturday morning! 🚙🤩

    Aah tomato Bredie, haven’t heard that mentioned In years. My mother used to cook that. I was born in the Cape but we moved to Bloemfontein and schooled in Kimberley and traveled by train to Kimberley. So lots of memories of travelling over the bridges. My dad worked on the railways and was involved in restoring and building the bridges. Thank you so very very much. May you always be blessed on your travels and bringing back so many memories to so many people.

    On our trips to the Free State,Beaufort West was always our stop over. We would stay at the Wagon Wheels Motel, just outside the town. There would be a roaring fire in the dining room, and wonderful three course meal. Then when my parents grew older, Karroo National Park was their holiday spot. I joined them on many occasions. Love the railway bridge, and thanks for giving me another blokhuis to paint! Wow!! Wonder what happened to the monument. What a cute little railway. That vetkoek looks like a bad boy!!! Oh, its my pleasure to join you in Beaufort West, full to bursting with many happy memories! I have seen rain in Beaufort West. It is when Beaufort West turns into Beaufort WET!!! I wonder if there is a way to get up to that old bell! Love the Great Trek gedenktekens. My late husband was twice successfully operated on by a heart surgeon [Prof. Johannes Brink] who attended Professor Barnard lectures and demo as a student. Barnhardt is a family name in my ancestry too. Ja, die ou kapkar! Love the info on the railway signal, thats amazing! So nice that the railway station is still alive. The purring of that diesel! Would love to hear her sing...PPPAAAAHHHHH!!!...Oh thank you for visiting Wagon Wheels. It was there before I was born, and back then it was just a motel. They have extended it quite a bit. Back in those days, we used to laugh at the pool...it was about one meter square! And the doors were all pale green and it was just somehow more country. Surrounded by non-specific veldt, my dad would take me for a walk...and once we laughed so much to discover a broken toilet sitting in the grass!

      So you've seen a fair bit of Beaufort West over the years too! 🚙😁 Thank you for visiting it with us again! I'm glad we could show you Wagon Wheel as it looks today, it definitely seems a lot bigger than it was way back when! And the pool has been extended too, you'll be happy to know! 🤣 So many monuments have been damaged and destroyed, which is always sad for me to see. It definitely looked like there was a statue of some kind on that plinth. 🤷🏻‍♂️🏛️ That vetkoek was for sure a bad boy, Sonia could only manage about a third, if that! 😳 They were quite strict about filming at the Town Hall, which now houses the Chris Barnard Exhibition, so I had no way of even trying to get closer to the bell. 🔕 So interesting to read about your late husband's heart surgery! I was reminded again of how incredible it was that Prof Barnard actually performed the first heart transplant, no small feat! We were hoping the diesel engine would spring into motion while we were filming, but no such luck! 😢🚉

      😁 I told her about your comment and her grin went right around her face! She has certainly become a lot braver, but she also knew help was just up the road, so I think that had something to do with it as well. 🤣🚙 Wagon Wheel certainly looks like the perfect spot to break up a long journey, especially in great weather.

    Hi Curtis & Sonja. Thanks for this video, it brought back memories of my visit to the town. The Chris Barnard museum is very interesting and it's a great pity they don't allow filming or photographs.
    Before retiring from work I was employed for many years as a Mechanical Engineer in the NHS in the UK. One of my colleagues in the same office, was married to a S. African lady who was an Operating Theatre Nurse, and she worked alongside Christian Barnard before she relocating to the UK. Anyone visiting the area, it is well worth a visit to both the Museum and the House. There is so much history to absorb.
    Drive safely and thanks again for sharing your travels Cheers from the UK.

      I second that. We've driven through this town countless times, but have never taken the time to visit the exhibition, church and house of Chris Barnard. Until now. They're very strict about filming in the Town Hall where the exhibition is housed, but the interesting info and artefacts were very cool to see all the same. Well worth a visit indeed! 🧑🏻‍⚕️👌🏻 How interesting to read that your colleague was married to a nurse who worked alongside Dr Barnard, that must've surely been a highlight of her career. Thank you for coming back to Beaufort West with us two! 🚙😁

    I thoroughly enjoyed this very interesting visit to Beaufort West! It was so nice to see Chris Barnard’s beloved childhood home (the tour guide was well informed and so interesting) and to hear how deeply attached he remained to his roots throughout his life.
    The churches and historical buildings are all a lovely reminder of the history of this town and the old blockhouse was a great find, even though the muddy potholes made it a little challenging.
    The little train with, its circular track in the memorial park in town surely entertained and delighted several generations of children who were lucky enough to hop on board for a train ride.
    It was good to see the rain, so desperately needed there - I remained warm and dry, nestled in a fleecy blanket on your backseat, so had no complaints about the cold or wet conditions!
    Thank you, DustBugs! I absolutely LOVE these wonderful trips with you both and never tire of hearing your happy chatter and laughter up front. You are a delight 💝

      It's always so great to hear when you enjoy a visit and this one to a town that I think most have driven through at some point in their lives. 🚙😁 It was rather chilly, so you were wise to remain bundled up on our backseat, that was the cosiest place to be! There are a lot of interesting things in town with a whole lot of history to boot. I'm glad you enjoyed the visit too. The blockhouse and Chris Barnard's childhood home must've been two of the highlights of this visit. The road leading to the train bridge and the blockhouse was a little dodgy in places, but with it being on the outskirts of town, help was only a stone's throw away should it have been necessary! That put my darling wife's mind at ease a little! 😍 We look forward to you hopping on board again on Saturday!

    Curtis you made me laugh so much with your comment "Gone to pot "". I thought you were talking about the pot holes !! As for that lekker Vetkoek. Remember Sonja something like that is called "A once on the lips , twice on the hips stukkie kos " They are not called a Vetkoek for nothing ! Adding those hash browns to the menu will really boost the carb levels. So good to see a couple of Diesel Locomotives. A nice railway bridge. So many well built and impressive churches in Beaufort West. What a humble background Chris Barnard had as a boy. I enjoyed the trip through the house. What a shame about the weather. Curtis remember if you don't want a grumpy wife , when she is tired , do not wake her up in the middle of the night, to tell her that it is raining. A nee a magtie !! 😂💦🚂Looks like that little diesel train in the park does not run anymore. Very sad.

      Sometimes I try and make light of it when I see buildings which are destroyed, but it always remains very sad when they've indeed gone to pot! 🤷🏻‍♂️ We're not really carb-counters and especially not when we travel! 😁 Sonia was so looking forward to some tomato stew which we had ordered from that place before, but she had to settle for the vetkoek. She wasn't too chuffed about it. It was super cool to see the humble beginnings of Dr Chris Barnard and what great heights he achieved in the medical profession. I felt quite proud of him while I was walking around there. 🧑🏻‍⚕️ There are few things as pleasant as the sound of rain falling on a corrugated roof at night, I just love it. @@DustBugsTravel I take it that Sonja was after a tomatie bredie ? Lekker !! I do enjoy a Vetkoek as long as it has curried mince in it. Just remember Curtis that you might be playing with fire my friend if you wake your wife up again to listen to the 'rhythm of the fallin rain, telling me just what a fool I've been ". You will no longer be an Angel , my friend, but rather a Duiwel 👹😂 I liked that nice curry meal you had. Sometimes I even make a Bunnychow here at home.Not too hot mind you . Yup, on a previous trip through Beaufort West on our way to the Eastern Cape, we ordered curry-and-rice and tomato stew and the stew was her favourite, so she was banking on ordering that again, but no luck. 🤷🏻‍♂️🍅 I love a good, mild, bunny chow myself, but not Sonia's vibe at all. She can't get her head around the half-loaf stuffed with curry. 🍞🤣

The train still works and the big cement slab was a big bird cadge hens it was called "Die voëltjie park". The Fort was restored and vandelized about 3 years ago.

      Just as you marvel at everything we get to see on our travels through South Africa, we again marvel at the fact that you can quickly hop over to Sweden, and a plethora of other countries, for a day or a few days. That is something we've always been envious of (in a good way 😊) if those who live in Europe. Half the world is literally almost on your doorstep! 🌏 I wish you safe travels and a fantastic time in Stockholm. We always hope to find a moving train somewhere, but haven't been all that lucky thus far. Let's hope that'll change one day soon. 🤞🏻🚉 We haven't tried those alcoholic pancakes yet, no! We must remember to do that, it's certainly the perfect weather for it! 🥞🍷 I'm so happy you enjoyed the visit to Beaufort West, Dr Chris Barnard was a great medical leader in his time and it was good to learn more about his life and times. 🧑🏻‍⚕️

    Wonderful video Dustbugs! I'm rather surprised that you (given your calibre of experience and knowledge) didn't know about the Barnard family homestead. On our many car trips to JHB from CT we always stopped at BW and KImberlèy which is roughly equi-distant, 500Km from one another apart. I remember having checked out the Barnard home from the pavement a few times already. History hasn't been kind to Marius Barnard who has been overshadowed by his brother. He too was no slouch when it came exellence in surgery and cardiology. Remember, he lead the B-team that removed the organs for donation from Denise Darvall. Been to the Heart Transplant museum? If not, it's definitely worth a visit! Keep up the good work and try not to get snow-logged along your way!😂

    Loved the anecdote about Sir Rufane Donkin! 🤣

      I thought it was a little weird. 😨 Another viewer pointed out that Sonia misread and it was Mrs Donkin's heart and not her head that was embalmed. Doesn't change the fact that it was rather, let's say, different. Thank you so much for watching! 🚙😁

      Another viewer let us know that Sonia misread head for heart and that it was the heart that was embalmed and that he was buried with. Equally weird for me though. 😨🤷🏻‍♂️

    This comment is a bit late but I am trying to catch up. I felt that I must mention my surprise at seeing the humble birthplace of Prof. Christian Barnard, one of the nearly forgotten pioneers of medicine that benefitted humankind to such a great extent. He should be up there with Mary Curie and others. Instead, he faded away into
    oblivion and the last memory of him is flogging some 'heart healthy' breakfast cereal on commercial TV advertising. Really sad and not befitting such a great man.

      There is no denying that Prof Chris Barnard made medical history and his achievements can never be overstated. It was absolutely fascinating to get a glimpse into the life and times of the man who successfully transplanted the first heart. The exhibition in the Town Hall looks permanent to me and fortunately the church and his birthhome will of course always be there and I hope it will always be protected for us and future generations to enjoy and admire. 🧑🏻‍⚕️🏛️

    If I may criticize , why do you always drive on the hard shoulder Curtis?

    • @DustBugsTravel
      @DustBugsTravel  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I don't mind criticism in the slightest, but I'm not sure what you mean. Because I film out of the window, I'm always slower than most, so I give way to faster vehicles when there is space to do so. I trust this addresses your concerns. 🚙😁

    Hi guys, if i may ask. Why do you rent a car to do your travels with? You are more than welcome to tell me to STOP BEING SO NOSEY - Thanks for your brilliant videos

    • @DustBugsTravel
      @DustBugsTravel  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I'm happy to answer. 🚙👌🏻Our own vehicle is heavy (both in weight and on fuel) and very low, so it won't be able to navigate the roads we travel on. The rental car has incredible ground clearance for a sedan, is comfortable, very economical and we don't have to service it, do repairs on it, replace tyres or anything of the sort. All we need to do when returning the vehicle, is to ensure that the car is undamaged, clean and that the gas tank is full and we walk away. Until our fifth week rolls around again and we collect another one ... 😁
