This first time I've even thought about this, was when I watched your video on shallowing the club. Makes a lot of sense, and I'm very conscious of this now. Great content as always, Giles
Great explanation and demonstration Giles of the differences in a "short backswing and long backswing players." I am a short backswing player and I noticed in your demonstration that the correct position of the shaft angle is caused by a flat left wrist and a bent back right wrist. This is the position that I try to assume in my backswing. I will take an alignment stick and put it down the shaft, as you suggest, to be sure my positions are as what I think they are! Good Job Giles!
How does this apply to the driver (or longer clubs) swing? I would think we might get to deep or to shallow with the plane. Or am I off base. BTW...great stuff on your channel. You have a great way of explaining things in a simpler manner than many of the online coaches. Always look forward to your videos.
So it’s the same principle however more driver swings will fall in to the longer category so will want to be neutral to slightly across the line! Thank you Tim! Great to hear you’re enjoying the videos!
Thanks Giles as a 68 yr old I am a short back swing player at 10 percent which part of the body am I using to swing down, subscribed and really enjoying the content.
Giles, I don’t normally post on videos, but to thank you for this info. I had been fighting with my swing to get more laid off, but realised today that having a longer swing I shouldn’t! Used your advice today and had my best ball striking day in a seriously long time. Now if I could just improve my short game!!
Never seen a video about that Giles. Very interesting and well explained with regards to the shallowing element. Not sure if I'm shorter or longer to be honest though I think I'm normally a fraction across the line. Normally swing in/out with a draw.
Giles, drill 2 here is easy to do together with that takeaway drill! So, got my whole swing covered!👍👍 Swingplainwise..Obviously lots of other stuff work. But this is good when putting my basics together at first!!
Excellent explanation of short and long swings I’ve always been a short swinger it very difficult to increase your backswing to increase distance but I believe it’s more anatomy related than not. Thanks
Great information- could you consider explaining aspects of “pelvic tilt” at address and thru impact and how that might influence path and or early extension?
Giles, I've been holding for 8 years and am always tinkering around with new concepts, which is fun but frustrating because like you've been saying you need marry up the right concepts and nuances in each facets of the swing to have a great swing. Like for instance myself having a dinner grip and also trying to bow my left wrist, those two aren't exactly harmonious with either. I'd like to have a more neutral grip and not have to worry about so many different details and basically take some variables out of play. If you were to teach a new golfer or someone who is willing to change their ways, do you think it would be advantageous learning with a neutral grip and a shorter back swing? Givin they are physically able to golf in any number of variations. Reason I ask is I'm such a tinkerer and tweaker and I've had great success from time to time but then it leaves eventually like most golfers can attest. So I'd rather focus and build my foundation with the style that's most repeatable/achievable. All things being equal what different details/swing style do would you give the best odds to being repeatable? Can't get enough of your content it's really eye opening. Thanks a ton!
Hi Ryan, I’d say as a neutral pattern you’d want to see something along the lines off… solid setup (which is key), neutral grip, centred pivot, well timed weight shift & passive release. Again that’s assuming A LOT of things but I guess as a bench mark it’s a good place to start from
The long across the line is exactly me! On a good day it’s straight to nice little draw and on the bad days big blocks and hooks 😅 When I’ve videoed myself in the past I know I early extend a bit so would you say the blocks/hooks come from not shallowing out correctly at the start of the downswing? Also where are you based please? Cheers
By the sounds of it if you get across the line then the early extension move will allow you to drop the club into the slot and back onto plane. The early extension is the saving move by the sounds of it Im based at Bletchingly Golf Club in Surrey
I've never heard anyone talk about this but it makes perfect sense to me. PS my video recommended is how the right arm (elbow) work in transition to to club parallel in the downswing
@@Gilesgillgolf I would say short. I thought short swing = not finishing backswing. 😅 So it is nothing to do with how much one can rotate their hip/ shoulder then?
@@Gilesgillgolf th-cam.com/video/wPQPD1ImWg0/w-d-xo.html, Dan Pohl led the tour in driving distance and used this pattern. No wrist set in the backswing and the set happens in the downswing . Very powerful

How do you determine if you are a short or a long backswing?
If it’s short of parallel it’s a short swing. If it’s king of parallel it’s a long swing

It’s often overlooked but it’s a massive part of being able to shallow the club

Film from the front on view and see if your club reaches or goes past parallel. If it does then you’re a longer backswing type 👍🏻
Can I ask, your technique can’t be so much different to a tour pro. So what do they have more to be on it ?
Consistency under pressure, short game/putting and mental strength
