      I call bullshit on that stat .... you said that 93-95% of PGA pros are cross eye dominant .... b.s! .... I am a firearms instructor in law enforcement .... I see 72 new recruits every two months .... we usually have around 3 to maybe 7 cross eyed dominant shooters in the entire wave .... where did you get that stat? Please send me a current reference from a reputable source on that stat ..... there is NO WAY that PGA pros are cross eye dominant in a ratio so distant from what is seen in the general public .... Now, if you are saying that almost all PGA pros teach themselves to look at the ball with there cross eye when playing golf, that is different ..... but, I’m sure as shit that the ratio of cross eye dominant pro golfers would be similar to that of the general public ....

      I was skeptical as well. However a search of papers regarding eye dominance and golfers turned up an article in an Irish golf magazine. There was an optometrist who surveyed elite amateurs and pros. 169 in all. 80% were type II eye dominate, aka cross eye. I didn’t read it to the point where it broke down amateur vs pro. I am not going to post the article. You can search for it, it took me minutes.

    Holy Crap! I must have watched thousands of you tube golf instruction videos. I think you discovered something HUGE HERE! If you think about it, baseball, hockey other sports focus way down the depth of field. I never focused on anything up close before, that wasn't at the target!!! I changed my focus to my left eye on the ball and EVERYTHING CHANGED. I'm now fully aware of what my body is doing in the back and down swings and SELF CORRECT. My swing feels balanced and my eye hand coordination falls right into place. I can't believe this is the whole reason body mechanical corrections always ultimately failed. I see the golf swing as a whole now. This was a never before found piece of advice. Wow. Thanks for all your contributions to golf.

      I'm very glad to know that this video was such a game changer for you!
      When you consider that the majority of the general population is right eye dominant, yet the vast majority of Tour players are cross eye dominant meaning that their target-side eye - the left eye for RH players - is the dominant one....well, that is literally quite the eye-opener, right??....😎 Yet somehow - and really quite sadly - such sorcery from this dark underworld of golf instruction flies under the radar of the mainstream because if too many folks found out about it the mainstream would then be rendered irrelevant.
      Thanks for your message and support, and have fun out there with your newfound understanding of the golf swing!

      @SagutoGolf Thanks Tom. For literally decades I wondered what the hell Jack N. was trying to say when he said "take a cock-eyed look at the ball"? The phrase stuck with me for decades
      He was actually quite serious though. I don't know how you figured this out, but it's actually very significant . Too many instructors explain the how but not the why. You've succeeded in almost all your videos explaining the "why". If I get the why, the how seems obvious. Good show dude! I should add, this seems to totally explain why amateurs make great practice swings, the as soon as they get in front of the ball everything goes off the rails. I through many a club into the lakes of NJ because there was NEVER an explanation for exactly this problem.

    I felt compelled to comment. This is pure GOLD folks. I have been working on Tom’s methods for the last year (6 mo break when I tore my Achilles in Feb playing hoops). I was in my shop today working on more drills hitting into my net. Wasn’t as consistent as I’d like. Remembering what I’ve seen from Nicklaus and Shawn Clement, I turned my head exactly how Tom has it. Mashed Taters and Krispy KFC chicken! Game changer. I can definitely relate to this. I'm right handed and right eye dominate. I also had eye muscle surgery on my right eye years ago to correct "lazy eye " and a sore neck from holding my head at an unnatural angle to prevent double vision. I'm more comfortable playing the ball back to my right, which is an issue with long clubs. I've learned to avoid staring at the ball, but will try closing my right eye. Thanks for another great video!

      I'm very glad to know that this lesson resonated with you, and I hope it performs well when you put it into practice! Yes - having the ball too far back in this stance can certainly be problematic with the longer clubs. I hope that by bringing your non-dominant eye into play you will be able to move the ball to a more appropriately forward position and thereby overcome those issues.
      Thanks for your message!

    Overhand Golf (also on YT) talked a couple of times about looking to around 7:30 (ball's 6:00) in more of psych / motion approach to it. Worked somewhat for me. Also have tried looking about 2-3 target side of the ball. It also takes out the hit impulse when working.

    I'm a left-handed golfer, right eye dominant. This is why I learned to shoot shotgun, rife, and pistols all with my righthand.
    This latest episode hits home in a similar way. When trying to shoot a recurve or compound bow left-handed. My right eye would totally make targeting difficult while shooting left-handed. So, I totally understand the struggles with eye dominance. Unfortunately, like with golf switching to righthand archery, I never felt comfortable. I can totally relate with difficulty getting left-handed equipment for golf over the years as well.

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Well, Charles, rest comfortably in knowing that your eye-dominance scenario is the same as the vast majority of Tour players, so you've got one less thing to concern yourself with in the golf swing.

    Thanks for the tip. When I learned to play golf many years ago, I used to switch hit in baseball and always felt more comfortable hitting left-handed. Like you, when I started playing golf in my late teens, you could only really get right-handed golf clubs and so that's what I went with. I've always struggled with consistent contact, and as you pointed out, I always have aligned myself to the right of the target. When I've taken videos of me swinging a left-handed club, the swing always looks so much more online. I tried your tip on turning my head so only my left eye sees the ball and it was like a light bulb went off. I hit shot after shot solid and online and my alignment was so much better. let's see if this holds on the course :-). Thanks again.

      I'm very glad to know that this lesson resonated with you; excellent job incorporating it into your swing and putting it into play!!
      I was a natural right handed hitter in baseball, so in reality I suppose swinging a golf club from the right side felt normal to me as well. My dad was a D-1 college baseball player, and I know for sure that he would not have discouraged me from batting left-handed! However, I will say that when he suggested I try switch hitting I - like you - saw the ball much better from the left side.
      Thanks so much for sharing your improvement and keep up the great work!!

    Interesting insofar as I was taught this decades ago and it became completely natural feeling (i.e., swivel your head slightly away from target in order to get a laser-focus on the ball with the target-side eye, and also get a longer backswing. I am a same-side eye dominant, right-handed golfer, but I guess I didn't realize the eye-dominance aspect of it, so thank you shedding light on this!

    Timely video! I have been struggling forever with my head turning toward the target on the downswing - and pulling my right side/shoulder down too much, The result was either hitting up on the ball and/or hitting behind the ball. I realized after watching your video that this turning of my head (and subsequently too much right-side tilt) was caused by the tendency of my dominant right eye to subconsciously go looking for the ball as I swung down. Like a dog to a bone. Hit some of my best shots today - including putts - doing what you suggested. Thanks!

    Hi Tom, where was this tip the last 25 years? I played 6 holes today, hitting off the planet, then remembered the eye dominance tip. I’m right arm and right eye strongly dominated so tilted head to the right to give lefty a look in. Unbelievable straight and good contact. Suddenly a new world opened up of creamy, buttery mash and crispy chicken. Thanks!

      @SagutoGolf I've even tried having weight stay on front foot and actually have my head in front of the ball where you want club to take a small divot. Did have some luck with that, but now using a bit more of an upright swing making sure my shoulders are tilting. Am getting more distance and consistency. Head in usual position slightly behind ball.

      Thanks you for your kind words!
      It is essentially the same swing with every club; just some minor setup differences and naturally occurring shaft plane changes as we graduate up in club length from short irons to woods. To demonstrate, you'll find towards the end of this episode some practice range footage of me hitting a 7 iron, 3 wood, and driver: th-cam.com/video/o0xscMyN3v8/w-d-xo.html Beyond that, if you search the word "drive" on this channel you'll see some related content.
      Upon learning this swing properly you will be harnessing the tremendous power source known as "angular momentum". This is the reason my students and online school members of all age ranges end up bombing it farther than they ever had previously, and I'm happy to let their unsolicited testimonials tell the story: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews. While practicing my swing in my backyard, I discovered the tilting of the head method. By looking at the ball with my left eye and tilting my head, I found that I could tilt and turn my shoulders more effectively as I transitioned from P1 to P2 resulting in very pure shots off the club face.

    I always remember Jack moving his head away from the target and just thought it was his version of starting his backswing. Sort of a reverse forward press. Not sure how to determine dominant eye. I shoot with my right eye so I am assuming I am right eye or cross eye dominant. Will give this a try. By the way I am a Saguto Golf member and love your simple, relaxed method of teaching. It’s really good for us rather simple people.

      Hi Ken,
      I'm very glad to know that you are enjoying the online school and I appreciate your kind words and support!
      Here's a simple way to verify your dominant eye: Form a circle with either one of your hands by joining the index finger and thumb of the hand you’ve chosen. Pick an object such as a doorknob or a picture on the wall and view it in the middle of the finger circle you just created. Now, alternate closing your left and right eye. Does the object remain in view when one eye is closed? Does the object move out of the circle when you close your other eye? The eye that’s able to still see the object inside your circle when your other eye is closed is your dominant eye.
      Keep it simple and have fun out there!
      Tom

    Hey Sensei!!! How did I miss this one! Right eye dominant and savagely right handed could really have me a couple inches behind the ball! Tilt your head behind the ball - could the same “dominance” also influence square, closed or open shoulders? Love this game - we always come back to the basics - but they improve the finer details - can we have “more crispy” shots?? ❤

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey Marco!
      Yes - absolutely that combination can skew your perspective, alignment, and swing. It's therefore no surprise as to why the vast majority of the world's best players are cross-eye dominant despite the fact that the general population is mostly not, right? But still we who fall into that latter group tweak, compensate where needed, stay in the ring, and fight the good fight!!
      Hope all is well!

    I have been using the "one-eyed' technique the last couple of days with good results.... practicing 20 shots interesting though that when I go back to both eyes my first swing topped the ball..... I switched clubs (using hack motion) 20 shots one eye, first shot with 2 eyes top the ball..... now I'm wondering if I should just play golf with an eye patch....

    I'm gonna give this a go at the range tomorrow. I'm right-handed and left eye dominant. Lately I've been concentrating on trying to maintain both eyes on the ball from address to contact. But I don't have the neck mobility to do this unless I substantially shorten my backswing. So turning my head as you suggest and looking only through my left eye will allow me to rotate more on my backswing. I know this would increase my distance, as I was practicing at the range a couple of weeks ago and not even trying to keep eye contact with the ball. I was less consistent with contact, but there was a definite improvement in the sound of contact and the distance when I did happen to catch one.
    Watching the ball with only one eye would introduce some reduction of depth perception. Do you think that could be a problem in the golf swing?

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'm very glad to know that this lesson resonated with you, and yes - I do think it is going to help you get a better turn. With regard to depth perception, since you are lead eye dominant - a trait you share with the vast majority of Tour players - it really should not be an issue. In fact, due to your left eye dominance you probably don't even need to concern yourself with closing your right eye. Just cock your head to the right like Jack Nicklaus and let it fly!

    Holy crap. This is me, right handed and right eye dominant. Even though I’m a low single digit player, it has NEVER looked “right” looking down on the ball normally with both eyes open. Will definitely experiment with this. This could have possibly shaped my entire swing and tendencies, which has always been to set up somewhat right and depend on a draw to get me back to target. And now that I think about it, I would bet 75 percent of my missed putts are missed on the right side of the hole. Could be a factor there, too. Why am I just learning about this after 45 years of playing?? Better late than never - thanks Tom.

    That's a very interesting concept. I'm kind of ambidextrous. For example, I write and throw left-handed. I'm a right handed boxer and swing bat and clubs right-handed. @SagutoGolf  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
      It's not so much which eye sees better as it is which eye is dominant. The majority of the general population is right-eye dominant; the vast majority of Tour pros are cross eye dominant (meaning that for a RH golfer their left eye is the dominant one).
      Anyway, experiment with this at the range and see if/how it affects your swing, impact, and ball flight.

    What if I am a right handed golfer but I am left eye dominant? Do I just rule out trying to use the head tilt since my dominant eye is on the target side of my swing? From what I am reading on pro instructor Jim Hartnett's findings and teachings, I am suppose to tilt my head slightly right so my dominant "left" eye is directly over the ball but in your video you are doing the same thing but stating you are right eye dominant so you must close your right eye.

    Whenever ive looked in the mirror to my right, i could always get it perfect, then would turn my head back to the ball and steep/over the top. I would analyze the swing where im looking down and the swing where i look in the mirror side by side, frame by frame and tried to figure out the difference. Id try to forcibly slow my shoulders down and stay more on my right side. Still steep and over. Then it dawned on me. The biggest difference was one swing my head was rotated to the right to look at the mirror. I tried hitting a ball by rotating my head right and boom, in the slit and shaft matching the forearm. Silky smooth crispy cream. Im trying to figure out if this is an eye dominance thing or if the swing is just influenced by eyeline. Take a look at tiger's "point of view" golf swing. He starts his swing by looking right and keeps it there in his downswing.

    Greetings from someone with even more conflict between eyes. I’m naturally right handed and am or at least was right-eye dominant. However, about 40 years ago, I developed a retinal lesion in my right eye, making an area just lower left of center stay fuzzy. In dynamic sports, the brain does a fine job of ignoring the compromised info and maps the left eye info in fine. However, in shooting, I’ve had to go entirely left eye. I can still shoot pistol right handed and left eyed, but have to go full left handed on rifle. From what you’ve explained, I bet it’s causing me a lot of inconsistency. I’m going to try the head turn to force the left eye to take over and see how it does. Thanks for the explanation!

    this is just 1 of my challenges….i’ve played tennis since i was10 years old…we’re taught to stare at the ball, see the racquet hit the ball…i roll my hands, this is tough taking tennis out of my golf game!

      I understand, Kate! There are certainly some useful similarities that you can apply to the golf swing - such as the external rotation of the trail shoulder and the in-to-out path the racket takes to the ball - but clearly some potential swing-wrecking differences as well (like the rolling of the hands).

    Got to try closing my right eye even tho I am left eye dominate. Playing right handed, this should help me get my left shoulder down with an easier head tilt.

      Try experimenting with a little bit of head cocking to your trail side. That may be all you need. Beyond that, relish in the fact that you share the cross eye dominance trait with the vast majority of the best players in the world!

    My dad has been following your tips + bought your course but recently he has adopted a near 95% weight forward stance in the pursuit of your methods that has completely restrcited any transfer of power or hip rotation and made his swing look very stiff. any tips / lessons to review ?

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Daniel, my program is broken into 3 phases. Stage 1 is about building your golf swing. The first lessons in there get you building solid contact, which has a 95% weight forward drill.
      The 95% weight forward drill doesn't mean "stiff". Your dad should be getting more hip turn because of his weight being on the front side.
      Theres no "shifting" in this swing because transfer or weight shift causes onconsistent contact. That doesnt mean this swing lacks power, you're using angular power sources vs the traditional method of shifting (which isn't powerful).
      It seems like your dad is in the early phases of my program. Hip turn is built into this swing around this phase as well.
      Watch your dad work through the program and see if he's doing as on demonstrate in the videos. He can also ask questions in the member community. I spend a lot of time helping members in there.

    It’s about time. I haven’t seen anybody else address eye issues like you are describing. I too am right handed and right eye dominant. For those of you that don’t understand this, hold a finger arm’s length in front of you. Close one eye at a time. Your finger will move or it will stay put. If it doesn’t move when you leave your right eye open, you are right eye dominant.
    Now imagine turning your head to the right during your backswing. There is literally a point where my eyes FLIP from right eye to left eye control (same as you are doing by turning your head at setup). Guess what? The ball moves in the middle of my backswing. Which one do I hit? You can imagine the control issues.
    Consider further the issue of seeing two balls at address. That may not be a dominant eye problem. It could be strabismus. This is a muscle weakness in one or both eyes. I see one ball slightly up and one ball down and outside. Again, which one do I hit? Prisms in eyeglass lenses can correct this problem but they can’t fix head movement in the golf swing.
    Solutions? You offered a way to take out your dominant eye (but only if the dominant eye is away from the target) by turning your head at address. You could indeed wear a patch or simply close the dominant eye. Or you could not move your head (not so easy and doesn’t address the strabismus problems). While it is uncomfortable, closing my right eye leads to MUCH better contact.

      I'm not sure who Bob is, Rich 😎 - but I am wearing Athalonz EnVe Golf Shoes and I love them!
