      Bro Iwaizumi is hands down my favorite character in Haikyuu overall. I absolutely love his character and his personality, plus he’s hot as hell 😏 But like I always get so annoyed when reactors are like “who’s that” or forget about him because he practically shows up on screen ALMOST as much as Oikawa
      P.S. Iwaizumi spiking is so epic but Iwaizumi on defense is one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen in my entire life 🙏🙏

    I really love that the Aoba Johsai coach gives the team the space to think and make decisions for themselves, only stepping in when he needs to. That kind of soft approach lets the players get so much smarter and adaptive together

    I do love that they gave Yamaguchi a highlight moment to show off his role on the team, but _didn't_ nail it on the first try. I think it's important both narratively as well as to make it more grounded in reality that not everyone on the team is a full-fledged badass right out the gate. Between the three other monster first-years, Yamaguchi has found himself a niche that complements the others, but that he still needs to polish and refine before it can become a linchpin for the team. "You'll get the next one" is so much more uplifting than if he had just waltzed out and gotten several service aces in a row on his first try.

    • @Persewna4
      @Persewna4 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      It's the fact that he failed on his first try that makes Yamaguchi my favorite character, starting with this episode and going forward. I feel like I can relate to him because of that, the feeling like everyone around you is so much further ahead of you, and the desire to catch up and be included. I'm inspired by his drive to seek out additional help in order to improve, and how, despite how nervous he was, he tried anyway. But especially his expression when Daichi told him to make it next time, his smile at hearing those words meaning he won't let this first attempt define him, there will be more chances and he'll need to be ready for them. It makes me so excited to see his growth going forward - even knowing what happens, I just love his arc so much.

    I swear everytime there's a flashback of Tobio when he was little the only thing that crosses my mind is how they watched him go from a sweet little boy to the tyrant king of the court and nobody even tried to ask if he was ok. And then they go and blame him for being an awful teammate.

      So, just for context (not spoiler), because the anime doesnt portray this as well imo, what makes Oikawa disliking Kageyama and Ushiwaka, is because they are "geniuses", Oikawa is talented but at the same time he's a grinder, i'm not saying genius players doesn't train hard but we see a lot of unbelivable natural talent, athletes that are 'instinctively' good. Is like one of the earlier episodes in the season when we meet Nishinoya, and Noya is teaching Hinata how to receive, and the way he teaches is just "whoom, zoom, bump", because deep down Noya doesnt know how to explain how to do it, he just "does it", and in that scene Kageyama was like "what? I understood what he meant." and Tanaka says "thats because you and noya are from the same species", both are natural geniuses. Oikawa is not that, hes talented but not a ultra genius player, like Kags, noya and Ushiwaka

    13:19 I do love that they chose to include and animate this tiny moment where Kageyama side-eyes Tsukki's decision to feint 3x in a row. Kageyama says nothing. He's wondering and a bit worried about what Tsukki's planning, because it's not the move he would choose to do for himself, but Kageyama allows Tsukki to attack the way he wants. GROWTH.
    18:00 I got flak from die-hard Kageyama lovers and die-hard Oikawa haters online, but I noticed that Oikawa's setter journey is quite similar to Kageyama's setter journey. They both had promise, but failed to reach nationals in junior high. They both went through a phase where it's all "I alone can lead the team to victory". Both got benched, and both lashed out at their teammates. The unfortunate thing for Kageyama is that he didn't have an Iwa-chan back in junior high. Oikawa had that 1 friend/teammate who calls him out on his BS, and who is close enough that Oikawa valued his opinon. Kageyama didn't. A lot of other players tried to call out Kageyama in junior high. Turnip-head is one of them. But he didn't have a close enough relationship with them to value their opinion above his own.
    44:29 I know it feels weird, but it's actually pretty wholesome. Japan has a hellish work culture, so rarely do parents/families come and support players especially in the local/low level scene. At most, students with free time will support their classmates. And, volleyball wasn't popular in Japan until Haikyuu blew up. So the context of mid-20s dudes who love volleyball trying to educate casual fans is actually pretty cool. Those girls were initially there just because they're crushing on Oikawa. But now, they have a better understanding of the game, and have better respect for the players, not just Oikawa.

    • @lachyywhite
      @lachyywhite  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +12

      SO MUCH GROWTH!! and you're right there is a lot of similarities between their journeys. I hope they can both come out of it better and keep growing!

    Kageyama’s journey of learning how to interact with other people/his teammates is one of my favourite arcs throughout this series. He struggles with reading social cues and he’s really awkward, but he’s trying so hard, and it’s so sweet. (Him offering Oikawa a tissue when Oikawa’s trying to dramatically challenge him is a direct result of that misreading of social situations, but it’s also the funniest thing ever to happen.)
    This is the episode where I think I value Iwaizumi the most. He’s such a good friend-completely not condoning Oikawa’s lashing out at Kageyama, but also giving him the support that he needs (because their coach is just … absent from all of this??) and reminding him of the things he needs to hear.

    • @lachyywhite
      @lachyywhite  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +13

      Yes kageyamas communication is some of the funniest parts of the show. And it seems the only real villain so far is their old coach hahah

  • @pilar327
    @pilar327 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +35

    Haikyuu is a show with no villains, just opponents.
    You start only rooting for the main characters, and then they show you the backstories of the players in other teams, and it makes you realize that, had the story been about any of the other teams, you wouldnt have rooted for karasuno.
    Usually in this type of shows you only see the story of the main characters and that makes you indifferent to the opponents, they become just another obstacle to defeat; but by showing us what they have been through it makes them sympathetic, and it makes you wish for a way in which everyone wins and no one has to loose, because you suddenly find yourself not wanting to see this new team you have just see the backstory of, loose.
    You just cant help but rooting for everyone, even if just a little bit, or for just one point when they do something amazing; the sense of camraderie in this anime is what makes it stand out so much, what makes it so great.

    Regarding Oikawa backstory - A lot of people gave shit to Oikawa about the outburst at Kags but honestly I get it, he is having a panic attack and with Kageyama's airheaded 0 awareness he isnt helping. Thankfully Iwaizumi is always there to keep Oikawa straight. Regarding the "teach me how to serve" notice that the serve routine of Kageyama and Oikawa is the same, except Kageyama prerolls his ball the other direction before tossing it up. In a way he did teach Kageyama, though it was through observation.
    Also I wouldnt say he "hates" Kageyama really - its more of he considers him a rival and someone to beat - its not as if he is wishing him ill or anything, he is just saying "I will always prove I am the better player"
    About Kageyama's shock - Hinata yelled so sincerly and jumped so confidently he nearly gave it to him purely on reflex and instinct - it just shows how hungry Hinata is - he almost ate up Kageyama at that moment.
    Regarding Sejoh anti-Hinata tactic: Hinata's spikes are currently still very light and he has pretty much no ability to control the ball in that motion leading to a really narrow possible area for spike. This means that it is a lot easier to react to it than anyone else and the Seijoh libero is just good enough to manage that. Personally I would still go with a single commit blocker since its massive gamble with Hinata's abilities not being up to par but it is pretty sensible all things considered.

    Oikawa is very childish but that makes his work ethic shine even more, imo. I think his dislike of Kageyama is from his feud with Ushiwaka (the hitter from Shiratorizawa that they have talked about) He sees Kageyama as a prodigy and another step to conquer before he can take on Shiratorizawa. I don't agree with his reaction but I do think his childishness makes him flawed and relatable.

    people (some more jokingly than others) like to act like Oikawa is some kind of wicked anime villain, but he isn’t really. (in the flashback) he's a 13yo with a passion/drive for volleyball too big for him to handle emotionally (similarly to kageyama) and having a panic attack. The fact he’s so hated tho (a rarity, especially in the haikyuu fandom where we like everyone) is a testament to how well he is written to me, how good of an opponent he is, and how-hard-to-overcome of a hurdle he represents. Thing is, by the end of the series, it’s very hard not to love or at the very least respect him as a character and as a player.

    About Kageyama : ppl said he is a control freak. But we can see here how quick he can adjust. From trying to smile (scarily😂), trying to compliment and doing highfive, communicating with Tsukki and ask Asahi how he like the toss. Imo Kageyama is an idealist, he has his own view. But when his view is being challenged (nicely) it doesn't take him a long time to adjust his view and be accommodating. For me it's not a dictatorship, just a hot headed idealistic teenager. He's very hard on himself that's why he also have very high expectations on others. When that expectations are not met, he got frustated and prefer to do everything himself and ended up being isolated. Don't you feel it's weird a 15 yo boy doesn't know how to high five, or smile naturally? 😬
    About Oikawa : ppl relate to him much more than they do with Kageyama. It's easy to see ourselves as someone who is being challenged by a younger and more talented teammate. And what better way to deal with that situation other than being petty and hostile, right? Sure, it's hard being the 1st loser. But ppl will relate more to 1st loser than with the so called ✨️genius✨️. Ppl will give their highest respect to 1st loser who work so hard to achieve their goals. While the ✨️genius✨️ Kageyama has privilege, how annoying right? I mean, who cares if Kageyama is just an innocent 12yo who just wanted to be as cool and strong as his senpai who is also his team Captain, who refuse to teach him anything? Why would a team captain help and teach how to serve to his younger genius teammate who will became a threat in the future, right? Very relatable indeed!
    And Oikawa wonder what Suga has told Kageyama kinda made me laugh. Cuz Suga just told Kageyama that he is not alone, that he has the team to support him and vice versa Kageyama's existance will support the team. Oikawa can say the same thing to Kageyama if he stop being condescending to Kageyama everytime they met. But that is why Haikyuu is interesting, nobody is perfect. All characters have flaws.
    Sorry for a very long comments 😅 hope you wont get bored seeing my comments 😊

    Cackle seeing you stressed about Oikawa's serves every time (and I mean, who isn't) - the author actually lamented having quite a few opposing teams with strong servers, because it made putting Karasuno in a pinch much easier :"D

    double episode is such a good idea I'm sooo glad (but still not enough tbh😂)
    and yesss my boy Yamaguchi started his arc, you definitely will love him because he's the best!! Oikawa's story doesn't look very sad at first glance and it's easy to say something like "he's just very envious and doesn't know how to lose", but it's actually so frustrating when you work so much and keep loosing despite your efforts just because you are not that talented. He's not a genius but he puts so much efforts. The most sad thing about it it's the fact that even if Oikawa do his best and reach his maximum potential, he will still lose to anyone who is more genius than him. Btw I don't know if you remember, but in the practice match (the very first match with Seijou) Oikawa came late in the game and had a knee injury. Apparently, he still works so hard that he gets himself injured...
    I need the «urururu» at every Tanaka's attack it sounds hilarious

    So good to see you actually trying different things with the audio. For the last one - the complete lack of music did hamper the watch along, specially in scenes like when kageyama and suga were having the back and forth dialogues.
    Music toned down is fine, as long as we get to hear a little bit of it, it helps set the mood. The music on this one was extremely low though. Would be great if it were a little louder. Thanks for taking inputs!

    Love double episodes!
    -no one likes it when Oikawa serves!
    -when flash backs happen you know your feels are in danger. But man they are so good!!
    -I think Oikawa hates Kagayama because he sees him as just a genius and doesn’t see that in himself. To him he thinks he will always have to work harder to still not be sure if he can be better than Kagayama.
    -I think everyone is confused at first with the sudden point jump in the second episode you watched.
    -I think this finals set is the most intense all the way through!
    -Yamaguchi has my heart. And this is the episode he earned it.
    -that last set/point is amazing!
    -man I love this show! Can’t wait to see the rest of this show with you!!!! ❤❤❤

    21:37 is a REAL sigh cuz Lachy knows that he cannot deny liking Oikawa anymore. It's amazing that you share your own story, that is so similar to Oikawa's back story. These stories just make me respect athletics like you even more. The dedication must be CRAZY!
    These 2 episodes really show the intensity of the tournament and how characters/ppl can learn and even change a bit during a game. It's just amazing. When's the next video again? lol (So excited for the next round cuz I personally love S2 sooo much, can't wait!!)

    i really REALLY love how kageyama is starting to be more open not only to feedback but also to build healthy relationships with his team, he's such a cutie patootie 🤏🏻
    Also Tsukki's thought process always gets me 🧎🏻‍♂️ you'll see more of it in next seasons but he's like- 3k IQ 😹
    oikawa has been surpassed by prodigies almost all his volleyball life and it hits even harder when you realize that, unlike Oikawa, these prodigies don't have to practice until they get injured to be /better/ than him. That's how i interpret part of him and the despise he feels towards Kageyama and Ushijima.

    How's a little behind watching so that's my fault, but I love about this episode especially that puts into a lot of perspective, is the way that wakawa deals with things that he doesn't like, while incredibly annoying, is his way of coping with certain things and not flashing out in a more negative way. If you're such a deep and interesting character that I love that even if you don't necessarily like him as a character you can at least understand him

    28:40 the excerpt from the opening. On the chorus.
    28:50 lol speaking like they're Nekoma
    32:15 i love that he has enough rapport/charisma to choose Yamaguchi to do this on
    32:46 do i know 🥺 the line yeah, but your disappointment with receives beh
    34:54 pipe pen-- I'll find some jp subs bc I feel they wouldve used English like theyve been doing
    (Though when they use literal English, it's actually being localized.
    No one is actually saying "dump, setter dump, net violation, or wipe"
    Like if you listen without trying to understand or get the story
    Takeda especially is the one saying "Two-attack" for dumps
    (Cause...attacking on 2/2nd touch? iirc?)
    Two-attack, touch-net, and block-out.
    (For reference moments : when Oikawa does his dump on the first point, maybe the crowd shouts it for Kageyama's return dump as well)
    Touch-net ; when Aone (no-eyebrows from Dateko) touched the net (and you said he _violated_ the net)
    Block-out I'll need to find...
    Oh! And "let serve" ? is "net-in"
    ...basically if you listen back and don't read, the terms used are more direct and self-explanatory
    Like block-out ; he hit it off the block, and it went in
    Net-in ; it hit/touched the net, but it's in
    Two-attack ; attack on 2nd touch/contact (setter usu.)
    And Touch-net ; someone touched it
    👍
    Localization makes listening feel weird for me in anime sometimes, but I also just wanted to mention it once I was reminded with that "pipe penetration" line
    37:30 U.Keishin just shortens it to "two" here

    I used to hold that flashback moment against Oikawa so hard, but after a few rewatches and seeing other people's takes on it I do think it was forgivable. Not only was Kageyama brand new to the team and all of his teammates at that time, but for being a setter at heart he also ironically has severely low social awareness. The only thing that mattered to him in jr high was getting better at volleyball, so the only times he ever approached Oikawa it was to ask for help or advice regarding his technique, never to banter or actually try to establish a friendship. If the only way you ever approach someone is to ask them for something, it can be very grating & come off like you're just using them, so it's not very surprising that Oikawa would lash out in a moment of weakness like that. The fact that Kageyama didn't even seem to register what happened is a testament to how little he actually cared about how Oikawa was feeling, all he heard was 'no' and basically just shrugged & walked off. Not saying hitting someone like that is ever the right thing to do, but for that situation it's at the very least understandable from Oikawa's perspective.

  • @smrgd_wlf4994
    @smrgd_wlf4994 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Iwaizumi is such an underrated character, he's exactly what Oikawa needs to push him forward and keep him in line. The one amazing friend everyone needs in their life.
    One thing i absolutely love about this match against Seijoh is how Kageyama starts to adapt his sets to the spikers. He's learning how to bring 100% out of every spiker and how relationships between teammates effect the play of Seijoh. His development is definitely one of the best parts of this game.
    Can't wait for the next reaction, episode 24 had me on the edge of my seat!!! I had to physically do something with my body to get rid of all the tension before i could continue watching 😂

    I waited for this, I love Oikawas backstory so much and the way he overcame his complex :) his attitude towards Kags is a bit childish but I guess that's how he deals with his inferiority complex that sometimes surfaces when he is around. Like I said before Tooru is not a genius just a very hardworking person and that really shows here :)
    what you said really resonates with me, there are sports animes where you just want the one team to win but with Haikyuu, you get to know the teams (later on) and the backstory that comes with it and suddenly who are so torn because you want both teams to succeed and I love that

    YAMAGUCHI MY BOY 😭 I am SO excited you've made it this far, been looking forward to this since we saw Yamaguchi seek out extra training! I love that this is the point that changed the momentum for Karasuno, not because he made it, but because he didn't, but he tried anyway. It shouldn't make sense that losing a point, especially on a serve, before the other side has a chance to stop it, should be what changed their mood, but I think they reacted to the emotion of the moment, that someone who was on the sidelines, who isn't a genius or naturally gifted, stepped onto the court and felt all the attention and pressure centered on him...and failed. And though he was upset to have let them down, he isn't going to run away, he wants another chance to do it differently. It's almost like when Yamaguchi stepped back off the court, he took that pressure with him, because now thet have to win so that there will be a next time for him. At least that's how I read the moment, and why they take so long on it when it resulted in a point for Seijoh.
    Also, I'm laughing so much, knew you'd come around on Oikawa, it happens to all of us. He seems like he's being set up as the "boss battle" for Karasuno to defeat on their way to reach nationals, only for the story to create sympathy for Oikawa and make it that much harder to root against him. I think Haikyuu does this perfectly, as it increases the tension for the audience, when you're torn on seeing someone lose thr game, their goals, their dreams, their ambitions... So much more effective than if the story made it easy to root against Seijoh. The next two episodes are going to get even more intense because of that; the game againat gravity will always eventually end one way, with the ball dropping to the ground.
    One last thought (sorry this is so long), but I really appreciate the flashback with Iwa and Oikawa, not only for Oikawa's development, but also because it highlights what Kageyama was missing: someone to refocus his ambition, to help him see the game as one he wins individually vs one he wins as part of a team. Kageyama was alone, he didn't have an Iwaizumi to tell him the hard truths, at least until he went to Karasuno and got properly schooled by Daichi and Suga, and humbled by Hinata. Clearly their middle school coach didn't know how to properly mold the boys for all the psychological aspects of the game, to their detriment.
    Can't wait for the next episodes!🤗

    Being 2nd as often is a compliment to me at least, because it only means that you are consistent at what you do especially if the one in the first place is changing every time.

    "I don't know why I want seijoh to win"
    welcome to the haikyuu.effect. you'll be saying that a lot in the future. not just for seijoh, but for pretty much every opponent we meet. the author is just THAT good at making compelling characters. I would even go so far as to borrow a line from a different show:
    "we have no enemies"

    Quiet music is better than no music, on the video where the music was gone entirely it felt really strange because you expect it to be there lol. But the thing that stops the copy strike bots is the best in the end.

    But I seriously can't wait for the next episode. I really d believe that episode 24 is the most impactful episode of the season and can't wait to see your reaction and take on it.

    Regarding Kageyama's comment on getting his toss stolen, he's just addressing how Hinata convinced not just the opponents, but even the setter Kageyama himself that Hinata is the one the toss will go to, emphasizing his monstrous ability as the Ultimate decoy. As always, love the reactions!

    Now you know part of the reason why I like Oikawa and why some of us the fans want Oikawa to win even though we want Karasuno to win at the same time. It is definitely bittersweet

    Oikawa's animosity towards Kageyama definitely stems from insecurity. He wants to beat the best to become the best, but a prodigy setter comes into the picture and has the potential to surpass him, and that makes him insecure of his own abilities, despite his hard work. That is what causes his panic and overworking

    • @lachyywhite
      @lachyywhite  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes of course that makes total sense. I definitely understand him better now that I know his back story
