People doesn't seem to like Oikawa at first. He seems like someone who is really good at volleyball combined with that "arrogant" personality of his... But really, Oikawa is one of the most relatable character in Haikyuu... That feeling when you know people who are "geniuses" like Kageyama, you have to work extremely extra hard even to the point of injury just to be good at it in hopes that you can bring your team to the nationals but......... He's a character that shows that there are limits on what an average person can do depite giving it your all. He may seem extremely care free but I think that he's just trying to make his team comfortable with him.

28:32 the Kindaichi/Oikawa exchange was just Oikawa's version of a pep talk, since he knows how Kindaichi feels about Hinata/Kageyama relationship( how they were so in sync while they(Kindaichi/Kageyama) never had that relationship even tho they player together all through out middle school. Oikawa just basically says fak them, we will show them how good you are, with me you'll get to even greater heights both jump wise and overall play wise. Oikawa is the kind of setter that will pull out 100% and beyond from his spikers not only with how he sets the ball but also how he motivates them of the ball with conversations that can sound tactless with how he delivers them.
Agree...say what you want about Oikawa (whether good or bad) but you can’t deny he’s a good team mate and captain...except for when he’s flirting with girls or being childishly petty lol
Personally the reason I never disliked Oikawa was because despite him coming off cocky, he's not really all that cocky considering he's the best all around player in the prefecture. I think it's mostly down to his personality and enjoying the spotlight. He never blames his team despite being much better than them, and he works harder than anyone. He's completely willing to admit Kageyamas tosses are better than his, but he's also realistic in saying he's still better overall. I just couldn't dislike the guy. Also it's nice seeing the 'villain' if you can call him that be the hard working player as opposed to the 'genius'. I feel like it's often the opposite, where hard work beats natural talent but in this case we're rooting for Kageyama(natural talent) to beat someone who works harder than anyone. Really interesting way to do it. (also on a side note, the subtitles you're using aren't helping him at all, he's not as cocky and rude in japanese)
@@kayla.kenndy6502 natural talent is a thing... You should Play competitive sport for a few years and you'll realise it's not a myth... Kept trainin till nose bleed everytime and guess what there's always people better than me despite only puttin half of the effort
@@kayla.kenndy6502 Oikawa is the best overall player in the prefecture emphasis on the "OVERALL" not particularly a single thing ( like he can set, spike, receive and has a deadly serve). It is said many times in manga and even in the anime and it's not like the og comment was saying kageyama doesn't work hard he does and he loves vollyball more than anyone else but you can't deny the fact that he has a natural talent for it. His play style is almost national level good with pin point accuracy which takes years to practice. He does work hard but his feel for vollyball is totally different. The changes he make in the moment and to try out new stuff without much practice or to surpass a senior's experiences in less time is also an example.
omg I just wanna say, even though I've rewatched Haikyuu like a thousand times (also because I'm following a bunch of different reactors watching the series), I ALWAYS get so excited when I see that scene of Suga holding up the no. 9 with that determined look on his face. It gives me chills every single time. And the episode after this one is one of my favorites of the entire series, I literally just call it Suga's episode. Love him so much.
We were not always ready when Kageyama's doing a setter dump like he's even tricking his own teammates and that's effective. But in all seriousness, what's best about Oikawa is that he knows the 100% capability of his spikers even the opposite team's spikers. He's not genius setter and he admitted it but he can produce a toss/set that his spikers can easily hit. Btw, always loving your reactions.
I really really hope Victoria reacts to the "the Haikyuu dub is my kind of humor" videos when they're no longer spoilers because I feel like she would love that LMAO
Victoria you HAVE to watch the special part at the end of ep 24 (when you get there of course) right after the credits and all of that, its prob my fav part of the season ngl, also love your vids
I cannot tell you how happy I was to hear the conductor metaphor when I first watched it bc I'm a musician so it instantly made a lot more sense to me:)
14:46 those two are Ukai's coach friends vic, they appeared in the early episodes when karasuno were against them in a practice match and asahi was having his "ace" momentum back then, suga, asahi, and noya are in the "adults" team Edit: she literally figured it out 2 seconds after i comment this 🙃
Kageyama is his last name, Tobio is his first name. However in japan its normal to call people by their last name, and it would actually be considered impolite if you don’t know the person well and call them by their first name. Usually you only call people by their first name if you guys are close friends or family.
i promise there is way more to oikawa than his looks and being “dreamy”! he does give off that vibe but deep down he has his own insecurities and can be very relatable to many people :) of course there’s others who don’t really understand his backstory and all the pressure & emotions he’s feeling, just because he doesn’t really show it. but if you pay more attention to his character he’s very interesting and honestly deserves better.
14:36 The two guys coming to Karasuno games are Coach Ukai's friends from his Neighborhood Association Team that Karasuno played against in a scrimmage when Asahi rejoined the team. Reminder that Yamaguchi is getting instruction from one of them about learning the Jump Floater serve, since about a week ago. EDIT: oh DERP, if I had waited literally 30 seconds I'd have seen that you figured it out LMAO
The two spectators are players from the Neighborhood Association Volleyball team. Karasuno played a practice match with them in the beginning episodes. I believe their names are Makoto Shimada (the one with glasses) and Yūsuke Takinoue (guy wit blondish hair)
Seijoh's style is a mix of brazillian and japanese tactics, specially Oikawa's relationship with Iwaizumi. It's really fun to watch those two play together, even though they're not my favourite setter/ace duo. That place belongs to the owl boys (next season). That jumping-with-spiking-form-and-then setting thing is really common on brazillian teams, and Ishikawa and Nishida like to do it a lot too.
21:08 As far as the translation goes for this part, the phrase is Japanese is the same for an attack on 2 and a setter dump. They're literally saying "two attack," which usually refers to a setter dump but is a broader term, since it's taken literally. The subtitles *always* translate this as "setter dump," though; I've noticed the subtitles aren't always 100% perfect, so that's probably why. Hope this clears things up a bit for anyone who's confused.
@@sayaliparandekar3714 Actually no? More like his personality kinda sucks so we dislike him, it's pretty simple. People are allowed to have different opinions, you know.
I like to think . Its because Oikawa acts very rough towards kageyama and since the story revolves more on Hinata and kageyama . We see Oikawa's character in a darker light than what he really is . Though we all understand , behind the Tease hating act Oikawa puts up . He understands and respects Kageyama's skill completely . I just love how Oikawa actually acts like an older senpai in season 2
Normal people manage to eat while watching anime with subtitles after years of training. Victoria is watching her first anime and just casually eats in almost every episode lmao... Whats the secret, somebody tell me???

as soon as I finished Haikyu I watched the Mens Volleyball World Cup and HOLY SHIT that was legit, like some of these moves in the anime were happening in real life
In the anime, people sometimes refer to “Aoba Johsai” as “Seijou”. Plus, those two guys in the stands played in the practice match where we got to see Asahi and Nishinoya play for the first time. The guy in the glasses also teaches Yamaguchi how to do jump floats.
Ok can we just take a moment to talk about how they say "televe?" It's so cute- they're just all staring at it so excited and Ryu, Noya, and Hina totally fuel eachother
Little side note. The practice match against Aoba Johsai was way before the match against Nekoma, even before Asahi and Noya came back to the team. That is why in the first match of the tournament the coach and players were talking about how Karasuno had a libero to improve their recive, and a powerful wingspiker.
Trust me when I say Oikawa seems very hateable at the beginning, but usually he starts to grow on people as you realize how relatable his character is. He’s honestly grown to be one of my favorites when at the beginning I was very iffy about him.
I agree. I honestly didn't care too much for Oikawa when I watched the anime but when I read the manga, and rewatched the anime lol, thats when I really started to love him as a character
Same guys . His my favorite . Other than Hinata ofcourse . I honestly felt a sense of familiarity with Oikawa when I binge watched Haikyu for 3-4 times . Lol . I got it bad . 😋😋😋
He really is a great character, and I admire very much everything he did to improve himself. On the other hand, I don't love that personality. I don't hate it, but I don't like it.
Yeah but that's the point.. you don't have to like someones personality to appreciate them as a character. I would probably dislike oikawa IRL but still like him in Haikyuu because he's brilliantly written and extremely entertaining as an antagonist. There's many examples of this across anime; hisoka, chrollo and meruem (all in hxh); madara(naruto), light yagami(death note), askeladd(vinland saga), yoshikage kira(jojo's), king bradley(fma brotherhood) There are many more examples of characters that would be very unpleasant to meet in our world while being excellent characters + fan favorites in anime.
They dont like him because of his personality, hes a bit of an asshole to Kageyama several times throughout the series. Personally though, i love him straight up, hes endearing as hell and a total goofball (and one of my favorite characters)
The two guys that show up to every game are Kurasuno Alumni. They were teammates in the volleyball club with young Coach Ukai when they were in Highschool. They first showed up during the practice game that where Azuma got roped into playing with the club again. Black hair guy is also the one that introduced the team to the jump float serve and the same guy Yamaguchi asked to help him with his serve game.
tbh I think Oikawa is just using his “cocky” character to hide his lack of confidence. He was never mean to others, in fact he is a really respectful player🥺 (can’t really explain myself without spoilers tho😂)
Oikawa said all that stuff to Onion head (Kindaichi) to piss him off at Kageyama and fire him up so he'll jump higher and work harder. He totally did that thing where he pretends to tie his shoelace so he can talk to this players mid match. Tobio (flying boy) is his first name and whenever the pressure gets to Kageyama his language changes to "I" instead of "we". Omg girl I'm the same Tanaka is my boiiii I LOVE HIM SO MUCH

Awwww yay so happy to see hour long reaction this week! I appreciate the insight you gave re: the conductor = setter analogy. Also, love the pink couch!
i see some people came through with providing links for oikawa's spike to set move, but i wanted to say, when my dad played volleyball professionally as a middle blocker, he and the setter (who is now my godfather lmao) used to do that move a lot, along with my dad setting for him instead of spiking. it's what nishida and Ishikawa did in the vids the guys here are linking basically. my dad would get excited even talking about it. i got him to watch haikyuu and we're in S2 already, and he loves the show, because he was exactly like hinata in his team: a short middle blocker with great jumping ability. he's a coach now, and I love watching haikyuu with him cuz he understands some stuff better than I do and explains it to me hahah
Hey Victoria! Loved the video. You're so fun to watch. Here are a few fun facts that may be interesting to know: 1. In Japanese culture, people typically address others by their last names unless they are close friends or have gotten permission otherwise. You actually write your name on formal documents as "Last Name- First Name." So, Kageyama's last name is Kageyama and his first name is "Tobio." When introducing himself in Japanese, he would be like "I'm Kageyama Tobio." In English it would be, "I'm Tobio Kageyama." A good example is how most people call Tanaka by his last name, but his bestie Noya calls him "Ryuu" which is a nickname for his first name "Ryuunosuke." (Tanaka Ryuunosuke) 2. Oikawa calls Kageyama "Tobio-chan." Chan is a suffix typically used for kids or in a cutesy manner/ to show endearment. It would be rude to use it towards a superior. He talks to a lot of people in this way and it rubs some characters the wrong way because it can sound patronizing. 3. Seijoh is the shortened version of the name Aoba Johsai. Aoba Johsai is spelled 青(ao)葉(ba)城(joh)西(sai) / 青葉城西 in Japanese. If you take the first kanji (青) and the third kanji (城) and put them together, it would be Seijoh (青城). So Seijoh is basically a nickname for the school. 4. The meaning of Aoba Johsai more or less translates to "West of Aoba Castle"/ Sendai Castle. So they are often depicted as a king and his knights AKA Oikawa "The Grand King" and his knights being the players on Seijoh. This is similar to how Karasuno is always shown with crows because "karasu" means crow.
So regarding your question about the 'fake dump' by oikawa: i have seen videos of Earvin Ngapeth and Yuki Ishikawa pulling it off! They're not setters but executed it beautifully!! :))
14:44 one of them is Yamaguchi's jump float serve teacher and part of the neighborhood association team that they play against in the 9th episode of season 1. The other is one of his teammates

Oikawa: (Attacks on two) "Pay attention guys! I'll be doing that again! ^_- "
Kageyama: (Dumps it in front of Oikawa's face): "Hey! Pay attention. I'll be doing that again! >:("
Oikawa: "I came out here to have a good time, and I'm feeling attacked right now."
Very well said

14:38 "Who are these two?!" Uhhh...they're the real Haikyuu homies.

Yes
They're the neighborhood association team on Episode 8, The coach's friends...
they are also alumni from the karasuno volleyball team and played with (young) coach ukai back in the day

Yessss I also feel like if she likes Tanaka, Bokuto will be really loved by her too
No one tells her about in another life, please. She doesn’t deserve it.
Haikyu S1: I don't like Oikawa.
Haikyu S2: I really like Oikawa.
Haikyu Final (not animated yet): Oikawa is the BEST.
Did you just spoil something? I guess not that big, but that tells me Oikawa apparently does something in the Haikyu final
Vic: "Tobio is a sick last name"
Me: "Ehhh is actually his first name" lol
T h i s c o m m e n t !!!!! ✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨
Yeahhhh✨✨✨✨👏
it was actually mentioned that he is the overall best player in the prefecture in terms of all skills
@@kayla.kenndy6502 natural talent is a thing... You should Play competitive sport for a few years and you'll realise it's not a myth... I play table tennis back in college, 2-3 training sessions a day 4-5 days a week, 3hrs+ each.
Oikawa is my favorite Haikyuu character and I can't wait for you to see more of him and discover what's behind that confident exterior of him.
omg I just wanna say, even though I've rewatched Haikyuu like a thousand times (also because I'm following a bunch of different reactors watching the series), I ALWAYS get so excited when I see that scene of Suga holding up the no. 9 with that determined look on his face. It gives me chills every single time. And the episode after this one is one of my favorites of the entire series, I literally just call it Suga's episode. Love him so much.
I think the fact that Oikawa is scouting Karasuno on his own time shows the kind of hunger he has and what he wants to be.
I’m here at 6 minutes after upload instead of 6 seconds I’m clearly failing at life.

I feel a little robbed by the Anime because they were resting on each other in the manga and they were so cute 🥺🥺🥺
Oikawa doesn't say that Tanaka and Shoyo's personalities are annoying, he says they're troublesome.

14:46 those two are Ukai's coach friends vic, they appeared in the early episodes when karasuno were against them in a practice match and asahi was having his "ace" momentum back then, suga, asahi, and noya are in the "adults" team
Edit: she literally figured it out 2 seconds after i comment this 🙃
Kageyama is his last name, Tobio is his first name. However in japan its normal to call people by their last name, and it would actually be considered impolite if you don’t know the person well and call them by their first name. Usually you only call people by their first name if you guys are close friends or family.
Bro, I can’t wait for her to meet our baby owl. I just know she’s going to love him more than life itself.🥺😄😂😌
Japan’s Ishikawa and Nishida did what Oikawa did in a really famous play of theirs! One faked the spike then set the other mid air!
i promise there is way more to oikawa than his looks and being “dreamy”! he does give off that vibe but deep down he has his own insecurities and can be very relatable to many people :) of course there’s others who don’t really understand his backstory and all the pressure & emotions he’s feeling, just because he doesn’t really show it. but if you pay more attention to his character he’s very interesting and honestly deserves better.
i lost it when you praised Tanaka and had the arms of an angel moment. I HOWLED laughing.

There's a lot more to Oikawa than just being a popstar. You'll see that soon :)
Oikawa is the best character ever! I love his philosophy
Victoria struggling to press a button is a mood.
But that's why we love her.
The two spectators are players from the Neighborhood Association Volleyball team. Karasuno played a practice match with them in the beginning episodes. I believe their names are Makoto Shimada (the one with glasses) and Yūsuke Takinoue (guy wit blondish hair)
Let’s Go!!! Aoba Josai matches are my fav, my boy Oikawa is here again
When the translation said "setter dump" the teacher (Tekeda Sensei) used the term "two-attack" to describe oikawa opening move
21:08
As far as the translation goes for this part, the phrase is Japanese is the same for an attack on 2 and a setter dump.
I don’t understand oikawa hate, he’s an awesome character. Everytime he’s on screen it’s entertaining af, he just wants to win like everyone else
Because kageyama fans are salty, since he got mad at kageyama in the middle school people started hating him without trying to understand

In the anime, people sometimes refer to “Aoba Johsai” as “Seijou”. Plus, those two guys in the stands played in the practice match where we got to see Asahi and Nishinoya play for the first time. The guy in the glasses also teaches Yamaguchi how to do jump floats.

Honestly oikawa is such a good character. I don't get why people hate him...
He really is a great character, and I admire very much everything he did to improve himself. On the other hand, I don't love that personality. I don't hate it, but I don't like it.
His personality could use a bit of work, and I think that's why some people aren’t too terribly fond of him.
Yeah but that's the point.. you don't have to like someones personality to appreciate them as a character. I would probably dislike oikawa IRL but still like him in Haikyuu because he's brilliantly written and extremely entertaining as an antagonist.
There's many examples of this across anime; hisoka, chrollo and meruem (all in hxh); madara(naruto), light yagami(death note), askeladd(vinland saga), yoshikage kira(jojo's), king bradley(fma brotherhood)
There are many more examples of characters that would be very unpleasant to meet in our world while being excellent characters + fan favorites in anime.
They dont like him because of his personality, hes a bit of an asshole to Kageyama several times throughout the series. Personally though, i love him straight up, hes endearing as hell and a total goofball (and one of my favorite characters)
Wow my favorite character from MHA is saying that his favorite character from haikyuu is oikawa aka my favorite character
So I am honored
The two guys that show up to every game are Kurasuno Alumni. They were teammates in the volleyball club with young Coach Ukai when they were in Highschool. They first showed up during the practice game that where Azuma got roped into playing with the club again. Black hair guy is also the one that introduced the team to the jump float serve and the same guy Yamaguchi asked to help him with his serve game.
tbh I think Oikawa is just using his “cocky” character to hide his lack of confidence.
He was never mean to others, in fact he is a really respectful player🥺
(can’t really explain myself without spoilers tho😂)
"you know all the episodes it took us to get here - this is it." - I am still waiting. It just gets better for me 😂
HARDCORE HAIKYUU REACTION LETS GO
Oikawa said all that stuff to Onion head (Kindaichi) to piss him off at Kageyama and fire him up so he'll jump higher and work harder. He totally did that thing where he pretends to tie his shoelace so he can talk to this players mid match. Tobio (flying boy) is his first name and whenever the pressure gets to Kageyama his language changes to "I" instead of "we". Omg girl I'm the same Tanaka is my boiiii I LOVE HIM SO MUCH

ive seen the show more than once but whenever i watch Victoria i feel like its my first time watching it
i see some people came through with providing links for oikawa's spike to set move, but i wanted to say, when my dad played volleyball professionally as a middle blocker, he and the setter (who is now my godfather lmao) used to do that move a lot, along with my dad setting for him instead of spiking. it's what nishida and Ishikawa did in the vids the guys here are linking basically. my dad would get excited even talking about it. i got him to watch haikyuu and we're in S2 already, and he loves the show, because he was exactly like hinata in his team: a short middle blocker with great jumping ability. he's a coach now, and I love watching haikyuu with him cuz he understands some stuff better than I do and explains it to me hahah
Hey Victoria! Loved the video. You're so fun to watch.
Here are a few fun facts that may be interesting to know:
1. In Japanese culture, people typically address others by their last names unless they are close friends or have gotten permission otherwise. You actually write your name on formal documents as "Last Name- First Name." So, Kageyama's last name is Kageyama and his first name is "Tobio."
When introducing himself in Japanese, he would be like "I'm Kageyama Tobio." In English it would be, "I'm Tobio Kageyama."
A good example is how most people call Tanaka by his last name, but his bestie Noya calls him "Ryuu" which is a nickname for his first name "Ryuunosuke." (Tanaka Ryuunosuke)
28:49 oikawa's teammate kindachi was the old teamate of kageyama in middle school, he accused him of being a dictator king
Aoba Johsai is Oikawa's team, you may also hear them say "Seijoh" which is also Oikawa's team Aoba Johsai but for short. If that makes sense.
14:44 one of them is Yamaguchi's jump float serve teacher and part of the neighborhood association team that they play against in the 9th episode of season 1. The other is one of his teammates
