This was an incredible match. Something that gets overlooked is how the girls in the stands showed up really just to cheer for Oikawa, and didn't really care about volleyball. By the end they're applauding the opposing team, and have an appreciation for the effort everyone left on the court.

Remember to watch the first OVA before season 2!! It gives context of a new character.
OVA's are usually the same length as an episode but its usually like a side story that they couldnt include in the actual anime(think of them as a longer post credit scenes, or those clips of deleted footage)
The name of the one you should watch is "The Arrival of Haiba Lev" (Japanese: リエーフ見参けんざん!, Riēfu Kenzan!)

For Graduating High School Students in Japan, they usually are heavily encouraged by their teachers to focus on their studies to prepare for college--
that means letting go of extracurricular activities like Volleyball. It's a Japanese culture thing-- they will be pressured, but not forced to quit Volleyball.
The talk among the Coach Takeda, Daichi, Suga, Asahi, as well as Shimizu since she is at her 3rd year, is a heavy topic because of this.
With only so much tournaments left to join, they can either make the most of it, or let go and focus on their academics--
but as we just saw, they're determined to work things out~
    Goodness I love Haikyuu!!

@@MsCyou0157 Right, I think that's what the teacher is pointing out when he says that the time they spend playing volleyball is the time their peers are using to study for the upcoming exams. Their academics will likely not suffer, but they won't have the extra time for exam prep, potentially putting them at a disadvantage.
But I like hiw Takeda-sensei phrases it, advising them to consider what they'll regret in five or ten years. I think it's clear that the think they woukd regret is not playing in the spring tournament. They finally have a team that can fight against these top teams, if they leave now before reaching the finish line, they'll look back as adults and wonder, "what if?" I doubt they'll have those same feelings about extra exam prep.

    • @ggginabella
      @ggginabella 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

I really love this part where the 3rd years need to choose that they will get back to focus on studying or continue the club activity. It’s no absolute answer in my opinion. The university entrance exam is a VERY serious affair in East Asia, and it's actually true that the "name of your university" plays a big part in job acceptance. I don't think that's how things should be, nor does it justify the teachers' disregard of Daichi and Suga's values. (I don't like that the teachers aren't listening to them.) But I also see how the teachers' concerns may be coming from a pretty genuine place, considering the social norms.

The spring game that Daichi is aiming for is the national tournament. It is scheduled to be held in January, but the university entrance exam will be held a few days after the finals. To summarize, if you don't make it to the finals or lose in the finals, you will face the entrance exam without being able to change your mind. There is no problem if you have basic academic ability and psychological strength, but there is a possibility that you will fail the university entrance exam if you lose the match. That's what Professor Takeda is worried about.

Not gong to lie, when you sad "Eat and become stronger" yesterday in your AoT react, I cackled knowing what was to come in Haikyuu.
The fact that Karasuno lost is what propelled this series to the top for me. It's one of the more realistic portrayals of sports in media. Sometimes you can do everything, train your hardest, and just hit your limits. Sometimes you just aren't good enough to overcome a wall like Seijoh/Oikawa. How you rebound from that loss, how you decide to go from here, is just as important as preparing for a match itself. The game is not just physical, but mental as well.

38:52 Your rant about school is a bit off. 🤣 This isn't about the teachers and counselors discouraging them from playing sports and focus on schools. They have college entrance exam coming up and the more time they spend on volleyball the less time they have to spend on studying for the entrance exam. As you know, school is extremely competitive in Japan (and other Asian countries like China and South Korea), so missing out on studying time will give them a huge disadvantage in the entrance exam. Like Asahi said, he wasn't planning to go to Uni, so he wasn't worried, but Daichi and Suga both were planning to attend Uni, so they had to consider their futures. The teachers and counselors were just looking out for the students' futures, as they should.

something you'll notice about haikyuu is that the author LOVES doing parallels to show character growth -- you noticed it already with the "this timing, this angle, this position" being the same as the first time the boys did the quick, but there's also one with the conversation iwaizumi and oikawa have after the game. kageyama read that oikawa would, with his back to the wall, pass to his best friend since childhood (which was a point that ended the set), and oikawa then read that, in a moment of desperation, kageyama would send it to hinata -- someone whom he met, like, two months ago, but whom he already trusts wholeheartedly (which ended the game). i bring you this analysis to distract from how much these episodes hurt my heart even though ive rewatched/read haikyuu SO many times.

Some cultural context: In japan, one of the ways you can only get a job that allows you to at least pay the bills is by working in a company. Most companies discriminate over those that have college education and those that don't (there was even a point where there was hiring based off blood type--which is almost like hiring based off zodiac sign). So, in Japan, if you don't get a college education then you might be living life as a part-timer indefinately. This is actually the same for South East Asian countries (a degree is mandatory) and I believe Korea as well.
That being said, Japan (and much of asia) also lacks the educational support system to address specific needs outside of general academia (there isn't really a Special Education, or Advanced Placement program. There's Cram School which is after-school reviews often taken by kids entering college). This is likely what teachers mean if the 3rd years continue to play sports. They'll have to quit Cram School, which helps them get into college, and thus have a well-paying job.
In this case, I would say their options are: cram while doing club, do club AND cram school (which tend to be on the same time, so that's pretty impossible), or quit one and do the other. That's what prioritising club over school implies.

I love how this anime is so realistic. From the balls, the sounds, the movements, but also the fact that it's not just some fairytale story where they always win everything. There's a real genuine feel to the team, their struggle, their development, their growth. It's all so realistic it's almost like it's a part of you as you watch it, like you're one of the players, you're part of the team. It's such an amazingly scripted, drawn and edited anime. I remember having this moment with my high-school baseball team. We were undefeated all seasons, and our season closer was against the only other undefeated team. They were famous for having a prodigy pitcher who was really really good.
We went and in the first game we utterly destroyed them. We got in the pitchers head and ended up mercy ruling him in the second inning, and by the 6th inning it was 9-0. But then, it rained and a bolt of lightning shot. Baseball being a sport where you hold metal sticks, means the game has to be canceled.
Unfortunately when that happens instead of continuing from the inning you are at, you restart the entire game. We played very hard, but in the end lost 5-6, the last out was because one of our batters stumbled on the way to first and lost a step of speed. The loss was hard but it was magnified by having our earlier success snatched away from us, and it finished out our season with a single loss.
It was a very quiet pizza party after that 😭

About the school thing, it's not like the teachers are discouraging them. They are just worried for their future. Idk about other countries but in Asia, especially in East Asia, education is a big thing. Their grades do matter big time because the competition for work is very very tight and the school you got into during uni will usually determine if you get in or not. And as the teachers said, those time they are spending in extra curricular activities that most probably won't matter in their career paths, will become their disadvantage and might become their greatest regret.

I think it's so touching that Kageyama and Hinata's quick attack was anticipated because of Kageyama's growth!
I also like the harsh reality that if you lose, you have to immediately give up the court to the next team without any time to dwell on it...
And then, there's Takeda-sensei's speech to Hinata and Kageyama after the match! Even he's not very familiar with volleyball, Takeda-sensei is truly a great teacher!

Fun Fact, Studio that made haikyuu had no idea it will get that popular after first season, they made more money out of it than they expected, and decided to throw a bigger budget on the 2nd season. You'll see just from episode one of S2, that animations and drawing are better than S1 had.

i was choking on tears when i first saw epsiode 24, like full on ugly cry butafterwords i was in awe and sorta greateful they wrote it like this. so many sports anime the main cast wins over and over and over with no real huge scary losses. so the experince of the team that weve been cheering for losing. espically its because Oikawa read Kageyama correctly because hes starting to trust...gutted but you can feel how nervous and threated oiwawa feels by the fact kageyama is trusting and is on such a good team. He knows they are going to be a force to be reckoned with early on

Daichi suggesting the third years leave is so funny to me like. He's probably the least replaceable of them?? Tanaka will make a great ace when asahi leaves, and suga's not even a starter, but daichi is one of literally two people on the team who is any good at receiving XD where do you think you're going

You know you're a true anime fan when you can predict the outcome based on the character's flashbacks 😂
Just a couple things to note: baka is an insult, usually translated to mean idiot. Second, in the match between Seijoh and Shiratorizawa the score looked close but the wasn't actually that close. Yeah the final set was close but if you look closely it was the second set so they lost two straight sets and didn't win a single set. You might remember in the flashbacks that in middle school they lost every single match against Ushiwaka and only ever managed to win one single set against him. So at this point it looks like Ushiwaka is just an unstoppable force and he really has Oikawa's number.

Japan has a very strong education\work culture, so it's pretty understandable why counselours would want students to focus on education part of school life in last few months before graduation, so they can spend time preparing for college. They are not opposed to them partaking in sport activities, especially since Karasuno was once a powerhouse, so their Volleyball team is pretty known and teachers know importance of sport for the boys. But Sugawara's case is particulary delicate, because he is not on a main roster, so there is a bit more to consider.
In the end, counselors have student's best interest in mind.

When I first watched this show I was so sad Karasuno lost that match. But with time I can't imagine a better outcome because so many things that happen in the future (their growth as players and as a team) were rooted in this moment. The goals, the taste of defeat and effort to get up, the push for becoming better, the support they have for each other, the trust the coach has in them etc. This moment made them so much stronger.

In countries like Japan, Korea and China (maybe other asian countries) the third year of High school is considered the most important year where you only study and apply for colleges and go to study lessons even after school is over, so it is discouraged to do anything else in the third year. I don't know if you remember but when Date Tech lost the match the third years said goodbye even though they could still play in the spring tournament to qualify for nationals but they made a different choice then Asahi, Suga and Daichi

About the third years - The system is very different in Japan. Your grades can literally be everything for you and it shows. Unlike in the west where the grades are kinda overrated in Japan they are looked at a lot. The way you find a GOOD job is by going to the right school where they will scout you themselves. A lot of schools have partnership with particular companies and if you want to work for them you need to get there - to get there, they will have requirements. Even when hiring the grades you had matter. And since the grades matter this much the amount of work those kids put in is absolutely crazy - they will be studying all day every day in the third year, just to get to that school. That is why Takeda said "The time you spend in the club they spend studying." - Its not a question of "I can study after the club" as this is already expected and all the others were also doing it before... so it was a really big decision and I respect the adults for making them think - its not an issue of good or bad choice but more of "make the choice you wont regret so you better think properly before making it"
As for why nobody was surprised Shimizu showed up - she has nobody to hand the work off of to - it would be much tougher for her to just quit since she has nobody to cover the spot - if she quits, no more managers for Karasuno.
Anyways thats just small educational window I wanted to make :D I am so hyped we are finally past the season one - after this many rewatches its such a slog to go through the "we are getting to know everyone" part of the story :D WELCOME PAST THE PROLOGUE :D

Watching you knowing the outcome is so hard. Makes me want to cry honestly. And of course Izazumi echos the words you said before. And you know even though they lost... they have grown so much that in a way they won as well. They have gined the skill to keep going on just not in this tournament. I love Tekeda's words. He may not be a coach when it comes to knowing the game, but he knows how to lead. I am sure he is an amazing teacher for sure. The dinner at the end of 24 always breaks me. And episode 25 was what cemented Yamaguchi a fav for me. He wants to improve so he does work hard. It isn't as easy for him as it is for the others so he determines to work harder. I think the last half of the episode is all about the choice to go on. Everyone had the opportunity to give up and decides not to. I honestly think that season 2 is my favorite. So excited!! Thank you again for an amazing reaction!!!

Let me tell you that I really enjoyed all your reaction videos of Haikyuu S1! You did a really great job and I was instantly hooked on your reactions!!! 😊
I am a fan of Haikyuu for the last 2-3 years or so... ever since I stumbled upon this Anime! And it is such a feel good show!!! There are a LOT of Anime out there, that are great, that I have watched 5, 6, 7 or 10 times... BUT... I have lost count of how many times I have watched Haikyuu!! Is it the 50th time? I don't know. Most of the time I now watch people like you watching this amazing Anime. They are all great, there is no one to hate, you want to cheer for everyone, you can feel the love for this sport in every episode, you are sad and happy at the same time... the characters are so different, so deep sometimes and so funny the other!
I am really looking forward to your reactions to season 2! This season is my personal favorit!!!! Thanks & Greetings! 🇦🇹

How you’ll take this will differ depends on what kind of high school you went(in Japan). In Hikyu, they mentioned that some of them are from academic class(which meant that their main goal is to go to college, at least initially) Which means they knew they had to make decisions at some point. It was never a surprise. So I do understand where teachers come from where they do need to point out academic view point. I do love Takenaka ‘s approach where “My job is to keep thinking for better outcomes”(think this was few episodes ago)as in, it’s not teacher’s job to figure out what is best for students, but to keep giving opinions and perspectives for them.

in case no one else has commented on it, Japan is very study focused. As a nation they get kids to do cram school and extra tests and all that stuff from an early age, cause it is expected that you are going to a good school with good grades.
The teachers are commenting on the third years because in Japan, school starts in spring, and in essence, what they are worried about is that Daichi, Suga, Asahi and Kumiko are staying with a team when they are using what they see as valuable time to practice for end of year finals and graduating because they dont have that much longer to go to school
Ofcourse the third years all went, f that, we only have 6 months to go, we gonna see how far this thing can go XD

I am so glad that you are greatly enjoying Haikyuu and let me tell it is only going to get better. Season 2 is my favourite season of all and it also has my favourite episode of all time as well can't wait for you to react to it.
Now I did promise you that I would let you know why Suga and OIkawa are my favourite Haikyuu and anime characters of all time and why I found them similar. Let us start with the obvious.
    1. They are both setters. 2. They are both 3rd years, and 3. They both at somepoint in their volleyball careers lost their setter position to Kageyama albet in different ways and handled the situation differently.
    Now the important ones
They are both hard working. They both have admitted that they are not naturally talented or gifted. They had to work hard to get where they are.
They are both very observant. They both made strategies from those observations. They both used their opponents weaknesses to their advantage. (references every episode Oikawa was in and for Suga episode 21 Senpai's True Abilities)
They also make their team the best they can be. While Oikawa brings out the full potential of his teammates. Suga makes sure is teammates feel good and alright so that they are playing at their best. Oikawa himself called Suga Mr. Refreshing because of the way he brings the morale of his team up. Different ways yes but still helping their team team to be their best.
They also both also have a nasty serve(which you will see in Season 2 later). Oikawa has his insane jump spin serve that lands before he does . Suga has his short serve which takes the Ace or main attacker out of the attack. Once again different yet the same. Once again Oikawa himself said. He maybe Mr. Refreshing but his serves are not.
So in conclusion they are very similar. Just do it in different ways and that is why I can relate to both of them and what has made them #1 of all time on my Haikyuu and anime list

Let me provide some additional information about the Japanese entrance exam system. In Japan, the third year of high school is considered a crucial period that can significantly influence one's career. This time is marked by an intense "exam war." Most students attend cram schools after regular classes and typically study for 5 hours on weekdays and more than 10 hours on weekends. As a result, it is common for most third-year high school students to quit their extracurricular activities and focus solely on preparing for exams.

Saying early in this next episode so i wont need to pause later ; calling Tobio and Ushijima by "-chan" is used as an insult.
    28:26 Ushiwaka-chan~ Tobio-chan
Could be cute, but supporting this is also how he calls "Tobio-chan" just "Tobio" in his head during his serious monologues last game

"Baka" means dummy, fool, idiot, etc. It's mostly used, at least in western appropriation, in a joking manner.
