Sacred words : Nissan they didn't let the Z Die. They have released a 400 Hp RWd 6 speed , sport car into the current car climate. In this Era where everyone and their grandma is producing boring Evs and fighting for the top most boring 0-60. This is a bold move from Nissan. We still want enthusiast cars. Awesome video.
I wish more car companies were like Toyota, Nissan (maybe Honda too?) They are making cars for everyone and are considerate of the target group of the products they create. Toyota even works on creating an alternative fuel to gasoline just so gas powered cars can stay longer
Why are those sacred words.. we still have a bunch of manual options every year even though it’s always the last year for them.. z is like the worst option
@@Traumglanz this is not the fault of Nissan, but rather the fault of our idiotic EU overlords deciding for their "dreamworld ideas" while the real world looks and is different...
when i was younger, i always hated soft suspensions. but then our crappy roads where i live even got crappier, i started to like cars that come with soft suspension that doesn’t break my spine. it’s a shame because stiff suspension cars can be hella fun
I’ve described my GR86 as a go kart. Sits so low and is engaging. It feels like I can find a new limit to toss it in and it always leaves a smile on my face
I also have a GR86 and completely agree with what you said. I've had 2 previous sports cars, both with 300+ hp. Yet, I've never owned a vehicle that I find myself literally giggling with how much fun I'm having tossing it into a corner, dropping a gear and then reving it to red line, as I do with the GR.
Agreed. I have the first gen BRZ, and it's that go-cart road feel situation I enjoy most about the vehicle. Looking forward some day to test driving the new Z (if it ever arrives for the average customer), but I wonder if Z will have that same road feel, or be more of a straight line pedal mashing vehicle.
I like the way 'Z' looks. Fusion of Retro with futuristic styling works. It's one of those cars which grows on you everyday. Looks rad in black with racing stripes.
I think they fell flat in designing the front end, but I like the side and rear profiles. and the interior. None of the things I like sway me in the Z's favor though. The front end just doesn't cut it for me when the entirety of the 86 looks so good to me. Had the Z come in a little cheaper for the base model, it may have been an option, but I don't want to pay more than 30-mid 30s brand new, and generally I prefer to buy used. The upcoming Civic Type R is actually more appealing to me right now than the Z, but I'm a Honda person. First car was/still is a Civic. Edit: I am also still happy they made the new Z, don't get me wrong. Just not for me.
@@jeppyjep I really like the inspiration from the previous Z cars, as well. The roofline having always been the shape it is is one thing, but my favorite design detail is the 300ZX-esque taillights. If money wasn't a factor, I would buy and build a 300ZX, no doubt about it. The front end of the new Z definitely has the former Datsun 2xx feel, but I think the headlights could've been placed further down the hood line or front end (if that makes sense), and the hood and front grille shape itself could be a little different. The design this guy made is what I would've loved to see! I'm not going to be able to afford a Nismo model, but I'm looking forward to seeing one. Additionally, I think that because Nissan was constrained to using the 370Z chassis, they had to keep the relative proportions present on the 370, so that may have been part of the reason the front end looks kind of blunt, bulky to me. th-cam.com/video/NQtWd-KtVeo/w-d-xo.html
There is no comparison and no dilemma; one car will make 520 HP overnight and more responsive, and suspension will cure all the ills he mentions, on a car that starts at $40K. The GT86 is no match; again, in my opinion, and the opinion of those who have done stuff to this car already.
@@caribbeangtr8077 Some of us like to have a warranty. I'm going to be a first time sports car owner with the new Z, yes I know I can make it stiffer with coilovers but part of why I like a new car is the peace of mind.
I can totally see your points and I believe all of them are true. And as an owner of a 370z with all those necessary mods to make it *really good*, I'm happy with my car and will not change it.
It's also going to be a bit of a unicorn especially as time passes. Big v6 rear wheel drive somewhat analogue sports car. Something pretty novel in a world that is pretty much turbos hybrids and evs now
I loved the idea of the new Z but the more i see i feel like it is a harsh compromise at its intended price point. All i hear is it needs 1,5 to 2,5 grand worth of suspension to make it work. It should have the LSD and the suspension from factory... for 40 thousand.
@@bfiremitch but lets be honest... Anyone who is considering any if these cars and actually is an enthusiast who wants to drive hard... @@jdb1478 black wheels almost never look good. In most lighting conditions, the detail of the wheels disappears and the wheel, tire, and fenderwell dissolve into a featureless void. Blech.
Guys PLEASE stop talking up the GR86 so much. It’s already hard enough to find because apparently there’s plenty of people willing to spend ~10K markups for it
Z is for those who are more into the stop light racing. 86 is for those who enjoy the dance with the curves of a backroad. It’s like a more “wearable” car.
I love the way you brought the two cars together. Paul was just sitting there in the GR86, and I was thinking "What is the point of these shots"... Then Todd rolls up in the Z. Perfect!!
Thank you for being realistic about the RTV issues! I've had to reassure so many people both online and in-person. I'm at 13k miles now and 3 track events, the car is great.
My god, the engines I should have killed back when I was a noob working on my cars, and using waaaay too much RTV on rocker covers, oil pans, etc. This reminds me of the hysteria around the Pentastar V6 - a few hiccups in the first couple years, and everyone's like OMGthatengineisgarbage. There have been _millions_ of them made at this point, and they are pretty damn robust, statistically speaking. Quickest way to become a "hypocardriac" is spending too much time on the internet.
Do you need 4 doors or AWD? If so Corolla. If you want a pure RWD sports car then go 86. Both will be super fun just very different from each other. Also 86 is way cheaper if that matters.
@@dsher503 86 is not way cheaper. Difference between base 86 and base GR Corolla is just 6-7k. Difference between premium 86 and base GR Corolla is 3-4k.
@@braetonwilson4296 Even 3 to 4K is a ton of money to a lot of people. Also not many people are buying a base GR Corolla without at least the LSD package. Once you factor in markups on the GR too, it won’t be close.
My dad purchased a 1978 Datsun Z brand new he loved it, two days ago I picked up a 2023 BRZ after watching your video. It may not have the power of a new Z car however I do love it and I can afford it!
You guys are the first auto journalists I heard say “ You can’t drive a spec sheet “ those words really tug on my heart strings as an auto enthusiast. I’m definitely liking and subscribing with the bell notification 👍🏻💪🏻🤘🏻
Everything I’ve heard about the Z makes me anxious. As someone who loved the 370, I’m not too excited that they went the GT route. The GR86 definitely is starting to be more appealing
It's a 370Z with a engine swap. I've driven it and it does feel exactly like my 2014 370 Sport when I had the stock suspension. It is, however, slightly heavier and I felt more understeer than the previous car in the corner. Overall, I like it. I just don't like how the rear looks and the 370Z is a better looking car in my opinion
@Joseph C. Oh, is that right? I'm sorry that I've clearly upset you. I never said this was a bad thing, or that either of these aren't excellent vehicles. However I am not about to argue the definition of a vague, overused and largely subjective word. You can think whatever you want bud, I assume you're an owner and hope you really enjoy it. Take care now
Great review. I was really interested in buying the new Z. The blue or rosewood colors look great. But I came here to say that I’ve decided to keep my 370Z Nismo (2010 with 50K miles). It’s stock except for adding Stillen Gen3 long intakes and an oil cooler from Z1. The Nissan dealer wanted to buy it from me even before the new Z was available in the trim I wanted. I’ve thought long and hard about it, and basically yes, I get a newer turbo engine and updated electronics… but I can’t justify the difference in price Nissan is asking. Probably 60K+ for a Nismo version and the options I would want. That’s double what the 370Z Nismo has cost me. If you want a fast American muscle car, theres the Mustang GT350. A driver’s car could be the (BMW Z4 cough cough) Supra. It’s a crowded market and I’m starting to feel like the Z won’t complete long term. It’s kinda the end of an era for these types of cars. That just might be a good reason to own one. ❤
Outstanding work as all ways!!!! I am in my 40`s have owned several 280Z`s, 86 RX7, 2002 WRX and now own a Gr86 for a week : ) This car is SUCH a serious sports car even in base form. Yes, I have driven trucks for along so speed is relative. 200 miles in and haven`t gone under 4K rpms and I am MASSIVELY impressed. It`s feedback and level of control is next level to me, with sticky 18" and brake upgrade it will be a lil beast!
Think I like the look of the 86 way better. I sat in the 86 & I like the feeling of the seats & how low it sits. Sort of like I was melted down & poured into the car.
I've not had the pleasure to drive these cars. But I'd very much like to. However what I wanted to say is I recently bought a Scion FRS. And in large part it was thanks to your guys reviews. I could not be any happier with my purchase. I understand Paul's gripes with the power but I can accept the car as it is and it really doesn't bother me. Fantastic chassis, good driver feel, loads of potential.. something that makes me want to go out for a drive again. Thank you guys for your insight.
Great comparison review. My thoughts, first I own a Neptune Blue GR86 and my first car was a 1979 280zx. So the new Z should have been the car I purchased since it was the first car I owned. However beside the looks that bring back the nostalgia it didn’t drive like my old Z. The new Z is heavy and more of a GT car than anything. As for the GR86 I love almost everything about it. The RTV is a serious issue and I recommend you take it to Toyota have the oil pan dropped and remove the RTV from the oil pickup tube as I did. Mine was completely blocked up.
To be fair your old ZX was a heavy GT car too. In fact that's what the Z has been ever since they added the "X". Hasn't been a sports car since the first generation
@@future62 My Z weighed 2,800lbs so not heavy at all actually. Vs the modern Z weighs 700lbs more than my GR86. As for the X in the Z that was for the 2+2 configuration. I had a 1976 280Z and a 1979 280ZX. Both cars handled amazing and that is what I wanted out of this new Z. Unfortunately the new Z weighs almost 3,600lbs, the suspension is tuned for GT duties, and the brakes hate stopping the damn thing. Now the new Z looks the part and has some really good power. My GR86 on the other hand weighs 2,860lbs, handles great, and brakes on a dime. Which reminds me of my Z of old and that is why it's in my garage.
@@CruiseControl1 Love it! I feel the same way. Had a 1765 lb '86 CRX Si, still have 2nd gen '91 MR2 almost 2900 lbs, and inherited my dad's '88 300ZX Turbo, somewhere in the 2900-3100 lb range. Totally agree on the weight differences, and GT vs sports car thing. Just have to point out the ZX wasn't a 2+2 designation. The 260Z and the 280Z both came in 2+2 seating, in addition to 2-seats. The 240/260/280 models were all the S30 chassis. The 280ZX was the S130 chassis which also came in both 2-seat and 2+2 configurations, just like both the Z31 & Z32 chassis 300ZX's. Cheers! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nissan_S30 for the early Z's en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nissan_S130 for the start of the ZX generation
@@EdwoodCA Thank you for sharing! I did not know that and after reading some more information it says that the x was designated for luxury, how strange.
I own a 280ZX myself and bought a 370z almost ten years ago, thinking it would be better in nearly every way.. Well, Everyday Drive is right, you can’t drive a spec sheet.
My issue with the BRZ/86 which I loved and sold for a 370Z was the power it’s not nearly enough the handling feel is amazing the car drives like a Porsche but has no power like one. The few 911s I’ve driven have been a completely different driving feel. The 370Z is my favorite sports car for the average person they are cheap enough and highly modifiable. Mine I bought stock but it surely isn’t anymore, It’s fast fun and handles great overall.
A car that "takes design cues from the past" and "already looks 5-8 years old, but still looks good" is probably because it has timeless beauty. Each of the models this takes design cues from are also timeless, so it makes sense. In 15+ years, this look will still be beautiful!
Incredible video guys!!!! Ultimately the answer is "what are you looing for??" haha... Although I still find it funny that the 370Z was the 40th anniversary and the 50th anniversary car LOL
Zs have long been a great middle ground between the lightweight 4-cylinder sports cars and the big V8 muscle cars. To expect the new Z to become more like the GR86 I think misunderstands the Z a little bit - though I'm sure many will cross-shop the two cars and highlighting their differences is fair in that light. The new Z is definitely soft but you might be surprised how neutral and playful the Performance model is at the limit on track. It's more like a Miata in the sense that there's both a lot of body roll and a lot of fun.
This exactly... Since the Z32 the Z has not been a small light sports car... Its been that middle ground between that and a GT car. This one may lean a bit more GT... But im not leaving stock suspension on any car I buy, so thats irrelevant for me.
Now, let's see if Toyota decides to take their project of putting the 1.6 liter 3 cylinder turbo in the GR86 and turn it into a production offering. That would be an interesting alternative.
The z cars have always had lighter rivals. The z31 had the first gen mr2 and the rear wheel drive Corollas, The z32 had the rx7s, z33 had the s2000 and rx8, I’m sure there’s tons more examples. I feel like Z cars have always been softer more powerful GT car versions of sports cars. I understand the juxtaposition here with the 86 really driving home the point that the gr86 feels so balanced and light. I swear every video in the early 2000s said the same thing about the 350 when comparing it to the s2k. And it’s true the s2k and gr86 are incredible well balanced fun drivers cars and they feel lighter and stiffer. I appreciate you guys for going with this comparison rather than another Supra/mustang video. I’m a die hard z fan so some of the video was sad to hear but I’m glad it’s getting a fair review. Great video as always.
Many moons ago, I owned a 240Z. That was not a GT car. But Nissan did keep making it heavier and by the time the ZX generations hit that lightweight character was gone.
I find that most people buying 86's are getting out of 10 year old used Corollas, are buying their first new car and think the 86 is the best thing ever. I mean that's a pretty low standard to begin with. You know, I was at a PCA autocross and a 370Z with nothing more then BC coilovers had the best time. Out of all the GT3's, GT4's, Turbos, STI's, Mustangs and MX-5's that day, a 370 whipped them all. Now it has a 100 more HP. Don't kid yourselves. Put coilovers on that Z and it would murder an 86. Or just wait for the NISMO. Comparing a car with 184 lb-ft to a car that has 350 lb-ft BEFORE a tune is just a silly comparison anyway. They aren't even in the same class.
We hope you noticed the reasoning behind the comparison as mentioned in the first two minutes. And our guys have driven plenty of things so they aren’t stepping out of a used Corolla and declaring the 86 good. There’s no doubt the 370z is good for autocross, but we also know of people who’ve been very competitive with the slower first Gen 86. Thanks for watching.
Love this channel. I am so jealous of the roads you have in your area As a former long time Nissan / Infiniti enthusiast, I just feel like the new Z isn’t progressive enough. It’s a great looking car, and I’m not going to say it’s a “bad” car. I think many enthusiasts wanted to wait to see how Nissan would execute development, but I see lethargic engineering that didn’t keep pace with the growth of its fanbase. Perhaps they will attract either new enthusiasts or diehard loyalists to the new Z.
I agree with your points. But to add, I think they were aiming for a reasonable price point for what they were churning out. I suspect if they added the latest engineering to the entire vehicle, to include chassis/suspension/etc, then we'd be looking at M2 CS MSRPs, without similar performance to justify it. Or they could collaborate with another manufacturer at the risk of losing their purity in heritage, but save money like Toyota did with the Supra. Not going to lie, after drooling at the 370Z Nismo for so long without committing to buying it, seeing a warrantied twin turbo version with an updated interior and exterior feels like more of a justified purchase. I'm very curious what the Z Nismo will MSRP at.
As a former 300ZX, 350Z, and 370Z the new Z is very dissapointing. It's quicker in a straight line but handles and brakes terribly. The added weight makes everything feel worse. It feels rushed even though Nissan had 13 years to make it... Then there is the price tag which at $50k for a proper LSD equipped model is no longer affordable which Z cars always were. I find the GR86 far more impressive given the affordable price and what you get. I will say I personally wouldn't speak to the reliability of any car after only driving it for 10k miles. 10k miles is barely broken in or for some cars there first oil change.
The Z is Nissan's GT350? If the GT350 wasn't as great a driver's car as it is? I don't get it (I get the "they put an awesome motor in an older chasis" bit, but it's so much more than that).
Really stoked you guys are putting this perspective out there. As one of your patrons, you’ve inspired me to purchase a Fiesta ST, a first gen BRZ, and now I’ve moved onto a GR86. I have had truly incredible automotive experiences at a very early stage in my life at 24 years old and I’m very grateful.
The BRZ is the gold standard for RWD JDM. It's so hard to justify paying more until you go up multiple classes of car. It's the 240SX of this generation.
The thing about fast cars, is they can only be fun for about 2 seconds. After that you either already at or above the speed limit and your enjoyment is done until the next stop. A slower car can stretch that fun out a bit longer and be a bit more enjoyable to drive at legal speeds.
You do have a point there. My 600 hp 240sx and my MKIV Supra will get to 70 mph in a blink of an eye. When i give them some throttle they are GONE and im already speeding hard and have to slow down, which is great and fun for those few seconds BUT at the same time, a slow car trying to get those speeds when it takes double the time isn't that fun. I have driven the Miata and this GR86, they are dog slow compared to my 2 cars or even the Nissan Z and when you are used to a car taking off that fast, a much slower car is boring. I personally cant deal with a slow car, when i hit the gas pedal, i expect it to move and move fast.
We were sad to sell it and wish we still had this 86. We’d done a lot of coverage and needed to move on. But we sold it to a local friend of the show who continues to drive it daily and tracks it regularly. Thanks for watching!
Love my 2022 BRZ! I upgraded suspension with Fortune Auto coils and Swift springs. Feels like a kocart now when I stiffen the suspension. On full soft it rides amazing (better than stock). Anyway great video.
These guys are doing a heck of a lot better than motor week is MotorWeek you just wanna skip the whole episode and skip to the sports cars and sometimes the sports cars can be boring you guys keep it interesting and fun and also how you actually drive the cars significantly faster than they do and more interesting keep up the amazing work
As a sportscar enthusiast, i appreciate Nissan bringing this car to market ,i think Nissan tried to be too many things to too many people and missed a great opportunity I can't help but think that money constraints were to blame. A back to basics 2800lb NA I6 with basic tech would have been great .It could have been another lightweight RWD sportscar to join a very small remaining list. Now it's just another middle of the road GT that most of us didn't ask for.
Does Nissan even make a straight 6 any more? The problem is that Nissan is in a financial squeeze and didn't have the money to get too creative with the Z.
@@future62 If that was true the mazda miata wouldn't exist. the problem is, we say we want light, RWD manual sports cars , but we don't buy them . If enough enthusiasts did, we would have more options.

Boys, I live vicariously through your profession every week. “Envious” is a lack of concentration to find a more appropriate way of saying that as I think, “What I’d love to experience is a ‘Z’ comparo between the latest offerings (GR86) and and old gun (370Z), every time, in now signature fashion, I just wait a few weeks and (with the lifting of a silver embossed cover) your dinner is served. Wonderful segment. Thanks, dearly. It was great to see how Nissan’s new muscle weighed in against Toyota’s interpretation of the MX-5. Cheers to the mission. I can’t thank you enough. You’ve got a life’r.
I'm glad there is a new Z. But I won't be trading in my 370z Roadster. A gently used 370z can be had for a third of the price of the new Z, maybe even less. No way folks will have 3 times the fun with the new Z over a used 370. If I had the space and budget, I'd be looking for a GR86, gently used that is.
Not dropping the oil pan to check for RTV in the pickup tube comes across as careless. There is a known issue with the car and you are avoiding addressing it and just hoping everything will be ok. That just caters to Toyota's position because if the issue is happening at a slower rate due to your driving habits, you may end up with the engine failing out of warranty where the repair expenses will then fall entirely on the owner. Another thing to consider for this particular car is that Toyota does not want E.D. to drop the pan of their car because if RTV is actually found in the oil pickup, it will promote more awareness of the issue which Toyota clearly does not want. All in all, these cars are a good drive. I have test driven a dealer demo and enjoyed it but with so many other cars out there, I personally could not commit to a car with such a major potential problem. Yes the odds of it happening may be low but with my luck, it will happen to me and I'm just not willing to chance that.
Great video clip. It's interesting because the analogy for me is getting out of my FK8 Civic Type R and Into my DC2R Integra Type R. The Civic is a wonderful beast, but the Integra brings a smile to my face every time - it's a driver's car that gives 100% fedback, as is the 86 and the MX5 (Miata).

I have been waiting for a rear driven MT car to be this agile. There are only minor things about it to complain about like the cup holders. But then, who has time to drink when twisty turnies are so much fun?
I have a 370 so I'm biased. I just could not downgrade to a slower car no matter how good it turns. Waiting for the new Nismo to see if it will inherit any GT-R features.
Paul, you're the only one that's said it. This car looks 5 - 8 years old already. I too think it looks great, but it's living a parallel life to the previous Zs. Again, not a bad thing; in fact it's refreshing some cars aren't taking such massive leaps and bounds into the future. It's like the game Cyberpunk. The game takes place in a future world, but it's the same game we've all played since Bethesda's Skyrim, which shares a lot of parts with Oblivion.
Thanks for the great comparison. I so wanted to like the new Z, having had a 370z for almost 12 years, but everything you are relaying is consistent with what I seen or read about the Z. More GT than Sports car, and too much engine relative to suspension, chassis and brakes. The GR86/BRZ duo make a more compelling case for something that is just more fun to drive. One question I have is do you think the Supra manages the increased power with an equivalent amount of fun, albeit one that costs 20K more? Keep up the awesome reviews...great content and amazing video work!
@@layne4376 I was referring to the GR86, not the Z. 20K above the 34K they paid for the Toyota. I was wondering if the Supra has the purer driving dynamics they loved in the GR86 but with the increased power of the Z. The Supra is about 150 pounds lighter than the Z, and from everything I have read, has better chassis control, stronger brakes, better steering feel, and if you go with the automatic, a much better transmission. I drove a 2021 Supra just the other day, and it felt good. Don't think it had adjustable suspension, so it was quite stiff (more so than my STi which is my daily), and I'm leaning strongly towards that or the new M2 as my next car.
@@stevegrauer, it does not. The Supra apparently outclasses the Z in nearly everyway, but I driven the a90 quite a bit now, and the GR86 handles and feels much better by an order of magnitude. The Supra does some odd things when you drive it hard and doesn't have much steering feedback in comparison, but it's a super nice car and pretty damn quick stock. I'd recommend watching the Savage Geese video where they do the Z vs A90 vs GR86.
@@DylanTK Thanks Dylan....I have seen that video. I think it was interesting to note that Mark felt the Z was a bit more organic in terms of how the front and rear suspension communicate. I had heard that the Supra was a bit more edgy with a greater likelihood to oversteer, but I thought Toyota had smoothed some of that out in the newer iterations. Speaking of steering feedback, I drove a 718 Cayman today...base model, manual but on 20" wheels. Steering is very precise, but the road feel is non-existent. I got back into my STi for the a long drive home from the dealership and was stuck by how alive the car feels in comparison. Who would've thunk it. I think the STi is actually more fun to drive at commuting speeds, and while no doubt the Cayman is faster on a track, it just feels boring at anything less than 8/10s. And you'd be hard pressed to tell the exhaust notes apart!
@@stevegrauer, yeah it's not even really the oversteer in the Supra that's weird as much as the way the car feels kinda like it floats under dynamic suspension loads and as if you're sitting on top of it versus say any other car. It's weird to describe, but I honestly would prefer if it didn't feel that way lol. As said, however, it still moves and will lay down the law on track even in that despite those items. As for your STI, might be because hydraulic steering rack? Most EPS units just don't have the same type of feel, but the 86 system is pretty solid if you ever get to try it (1st or 2nd gen).
The new Supra is a pretty sterile and uninvolved driving experience. I had a BRZ, have driven the new supra quite a few times. The supra has identical steering feel to the 2020 330i. Compared to the BRZ, it is a lot less fun, just faster.
It would’ve been very interesting if you had a 370z Nismo for comparison. As an owner of a 2016, I can tell you the Nismo is a completely different car to the base 370z.
From my point of view based on "blood lines".. the GR86 (1986 Levin Trueno, Corolla 86 AE86 4 cylinder) and the 400z (1969-1973 S30 240z In-line 6 cylinder) have been 2 different types of cars designed for different environments. You can't compare a peregrine falcon and a sailfish. One dominates the skies, the other dominates the ocean. I love both cars. Pick the one that fits your environment and you'll be more than happy with your purchase. :). *Initial D/Wangan Midnight*
Glad I found this video , after driving the Z in Gran Turismo 7 for the online time trail I thought there was no way this car can actually drive like this . And according you guys it does! It kind of wobbles about the track diving and rolling all over the place like the suspension are marshmallows .
Oh man, I'm SO glad to see a car seat that doesn't sit low!! You may need it lower but almost ALL sports cars are way too low for me and I can't drive them. Share the wealth with us short girls. The length being short is awesome too! I sat in it and still needed it a little higher but loved how it felt.
When you have 5 cars in your stable, It's easy to say 'don't worry, the stealership got your back when the engine blows up'. I'd rather be deprived and have a reliable daily.
There are cars that feel more amazing then the sum of their parts. I'm happy for all the GR86 comparisons that show that it's not all about power - it's about lightweight rwd fun. I'm happy with my 2020 2334lb rwd miata, if you tell manufacturers that you just care about 0-60 times, luxury, and technology and not driver engagement then they are gonna give you 4000lb+ electric SUVs.
I'm sad because the Z was a car I was really interested in. On paper it had everything you could want. Twin Turbos, Heritage, New retro design etc. However after watching numerous review videos including this one I must say I am turned off by the Z. I'd rather have the manual Supra now. I feel as though Nissan fell very short with this car and they didn't have to, they basically just made a car to make a car, not because of their enthusiasm for sportscars but because their competition made new ones.
The average guy who doesn't drive every sports car out there for a living would never notice some of the subtle things these guys point out.what you will notice is power and dependability. That Subaru engine is known to have issues with keeping oil moving and its not just the issue he mentioned either. With this close of a price gap it's a Z all day.
Disagree. Especially since neither of these cars are for the average guy. Though you'll undoubtedly get some buyers of each who just wanted something that "looked cool", both are really for the enthusiast who have certain things they value in a driving experience. Average people will the the GR86 too slow, and they'll think the Z is too fast for its own good since they won't know how to handle it through the corners. For those with a particular interest in car control in spirited driving, multiple reviews, including this one, suggest the Z may leave you wanting.
Can't wait for my GR 86 10th anniversary to come in, even compared to other models I still would pick the GR86 for the daily drive. I'm just looking for a fun car to have to cruise around and I don't need something that goes super fast. Because in all reality when can you do thst without risking your life or get pulled over. Other then taking it to the track.
I just ordered a 2023 GR86 and I was seeing so many people talk down on them that it made me question my decision and honestly this made me feel so much better. I love these cars but I think no one talks enough about how much more functional the backseats make the car 🥺
@@sharifamily5364 the vast majority of the entire car was designed and engineered by Subaru. Toyota provided the funds, styling, gearbox, and fuel injection system.
You can actually hear the droning sound from 370Z that can cause a headache if driven on the highway for any length of time. The new Z definitely sounds better and more refined.
I think if you were to take these to a track you'd notice faster cornering speeds with the 86 than either Z car. Just down on power a bit(with the 370) and a lot with the new turbo version.
When you are a 50k+ car being compared to a GR86 you have failed as a car company. The GR86 doesn't hold a candle to any 50k spec'd MOPAR, it can't compete with the Supra, m240i, rs3, ect.
This video was done sooo well! I love my GR86 too and it has changed my life ever since I drove it off the lot in May of this year. Thank You for all that you do! Keep up with the great content!
I think you guys are missing the point of the new Z. The new Z is a GT car not a sports car.. all pass Z generations has been a GT car.. hence why the softer suspension and more body roll. We all wish the new Z could be sharper and corner flatter but that can easily be solved with proper coilovers and sway bars. Second those stock Bridgstones equiped on the new Z are garbage.. they are more like a high performance all season tire. Third I love the styling and glad Nissan choose the clean and simple look of pass Zs for inspiration.
Thank you for this comparison. You confirmed what I suspected. The new Z is the old 370z with an engine swap. Nissan should have given us a truly affordable Cayman fighter, mid-engined and innovative. The GR 86 is still looking GOOD!
@Rawkfist1501 Not drastically move from their roots more of improving it which this Z failed to do. You pretty much just get a modern interior and a 70 more HP with a HEFTY price increase.
Great review - revealed a lot of suspicions I had about the new Z. I'm glad it exists for those who want one, but I'm done with heavy cars, regardless of hp. A lighter, more tactile car is much more appealing to me nowadays. I bought a 2016 Cayman S 6-speed this year and wish I could have got into one sooner. It was hard to find a clean, low mileage car with low options, but I managed to get everything I wanted except the Carrera S wheels, which is easily remedied. I was looking at the GR86 as a backup plan and I think I could be pretty happy with one of those as well.
My exact dilemma, new GR86 with warranty or used Cayman/Boxster 981. In my area, the Porches are still 15-20 k more. I'm trying to wait the covid car market out, and see if prices normalize.
In a way, the Z remains, what the Fairlady has always been. Tamura-san would describe Z’s as dance partners, but of course he has unorthodox perceptions about how sports cars should approach dynamics, but ever since the Z31 the Z was essentially a Japanese Muscle Car. Something meant to tackle the American highway system with enjoyment. There’s never been a V8 Z, tho I bet if Nissan figured out a way to keep it relatively cheap for the era (which like it or not 40K starting IS relatively cheap for today) they would have made a V8 Z with the VK series engine (funny thing about VK’s, they sound just like VQs lol). A lot of what y’all are saying about the Z was said about the Z31, Z32, 350Z and 370Z. This has been how they liked to do Z’s, where the Silvia would have been how they’d like to do sport car carvers. Fairlady Z is more muscle car than Pony car
GR86 is for the driving purist. You can add power to a GR86 (which it doesn't need for street driving imo). However no amount of money is going to make the Z handle like a GR86. 700lbs less weight and a lower center of gravity makes a massive difference. Like these guys said you don't drive a spec sheet. Unfortunately it seems like the majority of modern day "enthusiasts" only care about the numbers on a piece of paper and not how a car actually drives and makes you feel.
As an owner of a 22 brz i love it I have had to warranty it though. The gallery port blew out at 3500 miles but ofc that is a one-in-a-million problem. Subaru was very helpful and honored my warranty with no issues. I have to say that when it comes to warranty between the twins after it gets out of dealer's hands and goes to toyota/subaru it gets sorted out fast.
I’ve (test) driven both. And bought both (Z is coming in 2 weeks - GR86 up to a 12 month wait in Aus). I agree with the statements made in the video. I’m lookin forward to my time with the Z - and am going to love the power and acceleration. But for a car I want to spend more time with, I want the GR86. I bought it last week after both cars became available here in Melb. The Z I’ve had an order for 13 months. Great review.
No release for Europe. So not as bold as it could have been.
Why are those sacred words.. we still have a bunch of manual options every year even though it’s always the last year for them.. z is like the worst option
Please also buy these cars instead of talking
@@Traumglanz this is not the fault of Nissan, but rather the fault of our idiotic EU overlords deciding for their "dreamworld ideas" while the real world looks and is different...
They had to soften the Z's suspension to handle our crumbling infrastructure.
If they ever make another Z, it'll be lifted and on 33's
As an American I often wonder what it’s like to live in a first world country.
Yeah well Australian roads are crap too so Nissan is smart in backing off the stiffness, very practical for real first world crap roads.
Unless you live in Africa… count your (motoring) blessings
when i was younger, i always hated soft suspensions. but then our crappy roads where i live even got crappier, i started to like cars that come with soft suspension that doesn’t break my spine. it’s a shame because stiff suspension cars can be hella fun
Looking forward some day to test driving the new Z (if it ever arrives for the average customer), but I wonder if Z will have that same road feel, or be more of a straight line pedal mashing vehicle.
have you driven it in snow? I'm curious on how do-able it is a daily in Pennsylvania.
@@FDNY101202 no I live in the south. It only snows once or twice ever in a year
Same for my 2019 fiesta ST. The "go-kart" feel is the best!
I like the way 'Z' looks. Fusion of Retro with futuristic styling works. It's one of those cars which grows on you everyday. Looks rad in black with racing stripes.
Rounder headlights like the original 240Z would have made the retro styling perfect IMHO
@@Magnosummit I love the Z front end. It reminds me of 240z front end. I love the references and inspirations from the previous Z.
Its not as good as the Supra $53,000 isn't going to fly.
Excellent comparison. This is actually the real JDM fan’s dilemma right now.
God bless Nissan and Toyota rn
Facts
The dilemma is getting these cars without ridiculous markups.

I loved the idea of the new Z but the more i see i feel like it is a harsh compromise at its intended price point.
All i hear is it needs 1,5 to 2,5 grand worth of suspension to make it work.

Yesssss!!! I’m thinking of getting rid of my truck for one of those two vehicles.
Do you need 4 doors or AWD? If so Corolla. If you want a pure RWD sports car then go 86. Both will be super fun just very different from each other. Also 86 is way cheaper if that matters.

We’re glad that resonates with you. Thank you for watching and subscribing!
I’ll take the spec-sheet over the slow poke any day.
If you're honest with yourself, the 370z was basically a GT already. Stiffen the suspension all you want, its now just a less comfortable GT.
In a better world there would be a spinoff company that would name itself Datsun and make nothing but Z cars, one generation after another.
Love your channel, it’s great you guys don’t feel afraid to completely nurd out when comparing and describing vehicles.
Congrats on your FRS. Glad you are enjoying it and we’re thankful to have you watching!

400 hp used to be reserved for the upper echelon of vehicles. Let's just appreciate the times we are living in.
The time we are living in? With all three classics getting discontinued with electrification? Give me a break
I'm just gonna say it, the 370z looks so much nicer than the Z.
I'm absolutely 💯 in love with my 2019 370z
Incredible video guys!!!! Ultimately the answer is "what are you looing for??" haha... Although I still find it funny that the 370Z was the 40th anniversary and the 50th anniversary car LOL
theres also a "50th anniversary" z31
I got smashed by friends when I decided not to take delivery after testing driving. Good to see you felt the same as I did on the Z.
Can you explain more about the fun, playful nature of the Z and how it's like a Miata? Have you had a chance to drive one?
Called a local dealer on the Z .....they wanted 40k mark up !!!!!!! what happened to affordable sports car?????? Car companies need to fix this ASAP.
Great comparo, really appreciate the 370 being brought in as well. Used 370 vs. new GR86 will be a debate
This is the big takeaway from this video!
I would love to see a video of 370z vs GR86.
I am so jealous of the roads you have in your area
As a former long time Nissan / Infiniti enthusiast, I just feel like the new Z isn’t progressive enough.
The front grill is very ugly. They should have broken it up a bit with a silver bar running across it
I agree with your points.
I recently bought a 24 GR86. I absolutely love it.
I agree. The R&D timeline was there, the results are not. Coming from a guy who dailies a VQ37VHR and drives a VQ35HR on weekends...
It's a pandemic car.
Obviously Nissan had been planning it for years; but the final few years show a C-student effort.

More likely that what wasn't there was the money. All-new cars require money to develop and that's something Nissan doesn't have now.
@@frostbyte6258rolling the loans over and over lol

The car you want is impossible to make. The Z hasn't been under 3000lb in over 30 years.

I'm glad there is a new Z. But I won't be trading in my 370z Roadster. A gently used 370z can be had for a third of the price of the new Z, maybe even less. No way folks will have 3 times the fun with the new Z over a used 370. If I had the space and budget, I'd be looking for a GR86, gently used that is.
people will disagree with you
Not dropping the oil pan to check for RTV in the pickup tube comes across as careless.

The downfall to the GR86 is the boxer engine and the rtv oil pick up issue is STILL there

As someone who knows very little about the Z series, and only hears complaints about the new Z being too heavy, I like your observation
okay - big missunderstanding the, Nissan has to make the S16 :D
GR86 is for the driving purist. You can add power to a GR86 (which it doesn't need for street driving imo). However no amount of money is going to make the Z handle like a GR86. 700lbs less weight and a lower center of gravity makes a massive difference. Like these guys said you don't drive a spec sheet. Unfortunately it seems like the majority of modern day "enthusiasts" only care about the numbers on a piece of paper and not how a car actually drives and makes you feel.
The Nissan 370Z was so good that it was barely threatened by the Hyundai Genesis Coupé.
