    Took delivery of a 2022 BRZ three weeks ago. Traded in my 2018 BRZ. Loved the old one, really love the new one. I find it far easier to drive in town; the extra power down low just makes life so much simpler. I love how you don't have to hammer it to get power and you really don't have to downshift to pass on the highway (although it's still more fun.) The engine noise through the speaker lasted a day and then I unplugged it. I was looking for a car like the ones I saw growing up: TR7s, MG Midgets, small agile cars that were fun but don't put you in prison. I drove the 1st Gen BRZ and fell in love; I was waiting on the 2nd Gen for a year and ended up ordering one. I will be interested to hear your thoughts on it over time.

      I like the speaker noise in the brz while im keeping the revs below 4000 until the car is broken in. Otherwise i think it would be hard to shift by ear as the car is much quieter than the ones im used to at low rpm. You can also set up a beep to tell you when to shift tho

      If you can’t handle a high powered car without fearing of “going to prison”, then you just aren’t mature enough car wise to be able to control yourself. I’ve never been to prison. Own a 450hp+ and a 600hp+ car.

    • @jsquared1013
      @jsquared1013 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@JacesOwnWorld it's not about self control, it's about the fact that any sort of "enthusiastic" driving in a 450 HP car or 600 HP car will very quickly get you into speeds that are waaay above the speed limit. With a lower-powered sportscar like an 86/BRZ, Miata, or S2000, is that you can drive it enthusiastically on a curvy road while still remaining at a legal limit-adjacent speed. Driving my near-stock S2000 on the Tail of the Dragon (and surrounding area roads) at the same level of enthusiasm as my 400+HP STI resulted in a far lower speed throughout; driving the STI at the slower speeds that I experienced in the S2000 was still enjoyable but to a noticeably lesser degree, since the car had so much more left in the performance envelope that it felt like a stroll instead of a jog.

    Great car. I have the 22 BRZ. I have had it about a month. It is a fun daily driver for sure. I still would not call it fast by any means. My car had less than 200 miles on it when I pulled that overly quiet exhaust off. I put on a Borla catback and disconnected that fake sound generator. Soooo much better. I plan on getting an E85 tune as soon as the come out. Possibly some forced induction down the road. I needs just a bit more power still.

    So psyched to see you guys keeping one around! I picked up my BRZ in WRB in late November and have about 3500 miles on it. I think you guys hit the nail on the head in your initial impressions.
    Fake exhaust noise is annoying, but I’ll tell you in advance if you disable it, the car is VERY quiet. I’m looking at getting an HKS catback just so I can hear what it’s doing without the annoying “turn on” of the fake noise system at like 3700 rpm.

    • @scottanthony3426
      @scottanthony3426 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Another simple option for better sound is installing an axle back aftermarket muffler. I have a '17 BRZ, and swapped the OEM muffler for a Borla axle back. That gives plenty of growl, but does not drone at highway speeds. It was about $ 600, and the Borla bolted directly onto the existing system. Took less than an hour to do. Having an extra set of hands was helpful, but the Borla is smaller and lighter than the OEM. The Borla is high quality stainless, and comes with integrated tips that are slightly larger than OEM.

    • @bfife22
      @bfife22 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@scottanthony3426 I'm thinking about doing something similar. Right now I have a full header back exhaust on my 2013 BRZ (still catted), and it sounds awesome when you want to hear it, but on the highway it can get a tiny bit tiring. With a GR86 I bet just an axle back or cutback and disabling the speaker would sound great

    I recently realized that chasing power has been moving me away from what made me a car enthusiast in the first place. After buying a previous gen M240i and spending a few months in it, I realized I was having _less_ fun than I did in the 228i I traded, which was itself _less_ fun than a number of light weight and slower rwd cars I've had over the years - the '87 924S with unassisted steering, an NA Miata, a 986 Boxster S, and the MGB I used to "borrow" from my sister at 15. That's awesome guys! Congrats. I agree with all the points you're making in this video and I'm looking forward to many GR86 videos from you.
    I was between this car and the Hyundai i20 N but after a lot of research and even though the i20 N is a lot more practical, there's no question, the GR86/BRZ is the car to own. I've never driven one in real life, only in Forza 7, but I know I will love it. There's just the question of availability now, since I'm in Greece and these cars, the GR86/BRZ, are nowhere to be found. I cant even find the older models in the used market, which is weird. But nothing's going to stop me from getting one eventually.
    My question is: Are you going to get it tuned? The guys at FTspeed seem to suggest that Subaru is underselling the hp on this engine and that it's more powerful than advertised. So I'm wondering how much improvement there is with a tune.
    Cheers.

And while I LOVE the GT350, that would be a pretty intimidating car to have on track for your first time and you can get yourself into trouble real quick! This is a big reason why Mustangs became the TH-cam joke that they are with hitting crowds. Cheap power when used and no driver experience are a bad combination.

      @@evalonious I sold my 2009 Boxster S about a month ago and just took ownership of my new GR 86 about two weeks ago. The Boxster was a PDK transmission and I had all season continentals on it it also had 19 inch wheels. The GR 86 is the premium manual transmission and I bought a second set of wheels with Michelin winter tires so I can drive here year-round in Michigan. One of my main reasons for making the switch was for a greater comfort inside the car. I am 6 foot one and 170 pounds and I appreciate a little more legroom and being able to recline the seats also having space behind the seats for gear that one can easily reach and a good sized cupholder in the door. Terms of handling the cars are quite different the boxer is glued to the pavement and I never did break it loose on a curve. The GR 86 is easy to get sliding if that’s what you want to do especially in the winter. Comparing their steering the GR 86 is sharper especially on center very quick steering the Porsche was a bit more relaxed actually. I’m only at about 700 miles on the GR and have just today driven it over 4000 RPM for the first time. Obviously the big torque is 4000 up which was great to experience finally. The car is plenty fast for me not quite the same as the Porsche but just fine.

      Same here. I was on two lists for a gr86 but they hit me with the ADM news later on and i passed. I ended up getting a Fiesta ST for the time being. I would love an RF but I don't fit.

    • @EpicLakitu
      @EpicLakitu 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@wesleyrice2138 I absolutely love it, it's definitely a little cramped compared to the FR-S, me being 6'3 and 270 lbs lol
      I daily drive the Miata and it makes every single drive feel special. The tech helps a lot too vs the FRS (blind spot monitoring, backup cam, etc), but the GR86 has pretty much the same stuff as far as I know.
      I never got to drive the 86 because said dealerships wouldn't let me drive unless I intended to buy afterwards (how am I supposed to know if I want it without driving it??) but in comparison to the FRS the Miata feels much more tossable and maneuverable, and the sense of speed because of the more compliant suspension is much better. The ride is softer than the FR-S, but it's definitely better suited for street driving. The FR-S definitely felt more stable in high speed corners, but the torque dip was a massive hinderance in daily driving. Regardless I loved it, and owned it for a little over a year before making the switch.
      For the same price without markups it's a tough decision, but it depends what you're planning on doing with it. The 86 is 100% more track focused in its suspension tuning and overall feel, and the Miata is much better suited for street driving especially on a nice day.
      Best of luck! You'll love whichever one you choose, it's really just a matter of what you'll be doing with it and the weather by you.
      I have no idea if the situation would've changed had I actually been able to test drive, but the 10k markup at the local dealers still would've left me to choose the Miata regardless. I'm considering waiting a few years or so and then seriously considering a GR86 as I'm curious how it compares not to the FRS but to the Miata now. Plus there'll be neat editions down the line I'm sure, maybe I'll snag one of those.
      Also a bit of a side tangent, someone my height would fit fine with the top up, but my hair gets real messed up because it touches the top. If you're bald then it'd work great even if you're tall, lol

      @EpicLakitu 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have a Sport trim soft top by the way, base everything with all seasons on for the chilly months. And even with the base sound system it's leagues better than the FR-S if it makes any difference for ya, it was a very pleasant surprise after picking it up.

    Grats on the buy. You're going to love this one. I do, however, have some gripes, and I've learned a few things since I bought mine on black friday. I really don't like how my car came with a vortex generator. I've learned that, for my life, I need a track day set of wheels and tires, and maybe even pads. I need to change the brake fluid because I can feel the change in the brake pedal after track use. I got the noise generator turned off before my track day, and now I actually want it on, not because it sounds good, but it's the free option compared to buying a new exhaust, it's too quiet in here. There's a lot of UEL options out there, but I'm hesitant because it does move the peak torque around depending on who makes it, the tunes aren't available yet. Some catbacks are mostly direct bolt on from the previous gen, and give 2-4 horsepower, mostly negligible. What I want one for is sound, because if I had the money, I'd keep the sound generator off, and have a Perrin 3" Caback. The Borla sounds good too, but I don't know if it will turn the rear bumper into a parachute. there's no muffler in the Borla where the stock can used to be, and that acted as part of the aero to smooth air flow away from that muffler cavity. I hope they do something about that, like a diffuser or something. Lastly, I don't know if you're enforced to run a front license plate, but since I'm in California, I had to buy a front plate adapter from Subaru separately. My BRZ came with mount holes that were Japanese spec, so the holes were closer together, and larger than the hardware provided by the kit. A stop at the local Lowes to find M6-24 fasteners did the trick. You could drill through the bumper, like other dealerships shamefully have, but that will destroy such a beautiful nose. I don't feel like I'm lacking in power, but I've come to accept that I'm not a very good driver. I'll need to work on that. Oh and people need to stop trying to race me at the light. It's really annoying.

      Anyone that does more than one track day a year should consider dedicated brakes and flush the brake fluid with higher temp stuff in any car. That isn’t limited to just these. Even exotics that get tracked regularly need higher temp fluid more often than not.

      Well at least you know that you aren’t going to be beating anyone in that slow a.s car when someone pulls up to race 🤣

    So I’m an owner of a 2018 brz. I’ve now bought the 2022 86. One reason I switched. The tech gauge has a yellow warning light before the red light. I love this when I’m on the track. My 2018 brz with stage 1 tune is getting 29mpg on highway. That’s insane. But it’s 230lbs lighter too. Love to share notes as I own 2018 and 2022.
