How I Install A Prehung Interior Door

- Here’s how I install a pre-hung interior door.
First, I measure the height of all three hinges.
Then I mark their locations on the hinge side of the rough opening.
I’m using 2 ½” long 15-gauge trim nails.
I put two shims at each mark.
These shims are wedged shaped, so as I slide them closer together they get thicker and further apart they get thinner.
With a 6-foot level I make sure the shims are perfectly in line with one another working from the bottom to the top, this gives me a plumb surface to mount the door to.
I also check that the floor is level in the opening- if it’s off I may need to raise one side of the jamb or the other to make the top of the door level.
Next, I center the hinge side of the jamb with the wall, and I nail it at the top shims. @hausplans

On most jobs we take the door stops off, we then use it to cover the nail heads or screws when we put it back on. Less nail heads are better
But don't you have to nail the stops back on therefore having nail holes?
I hope that compressor is big enough for that nail gun😂

Well, this would explain why my contractor installed doors are all crooked.
What’s the reason for the shims on the hinge side? Apart from leveling and plumbing.
THISisCarpentry has the best tutorial for prehung door installs. You actually don't want to shim behind the hinges. Messes with your ability to adjust the door.
If rough opening is already level do I need to add shims ? Can I just nail it straight to the rough opening ?
You still need to shim just to center the door in the hole so there’s not too big gap on the other side

If the rough opening is level on the hinge side, can you skip the shims and just nail it into rough opening?
Interior you could, but then the door wouldn’t be centered in the opening
man i hated hanging doors, always so troublesome to get them level, and make sure there was room for the door to close and to account for the wood expanding and contracting under weather, etc.

If you take your door stop off you can hide your nails
We take the doorstop off of doors that are prefinished, but this door already has nail holes in it from the factory and it needs to be painted, so not a big deal to make a few more holes.

Why don’t you just nail the hinge side to the stud and shim or use a piece of plywood to fill the gap
I always nail hinge side flush with door jamb. Shim handle side. Rearrange framing as needed. I follow my own framing for finish work so it's all gravy. Strange how homeboy did this. I have NEVER seen shims nailed prior to install. 1/16 matters, I personally do not like this method. Door will sag, amongst other issues. I don't like it.
@@user-gf2ui2jk4p same here. Never seen shims nailed in prior to door install. I nail through the jamb so I can move jamb in or out riding in those nails - using free shims to move it. I also check door opening to see if dog legs are in same plane.
I always use 3 pieces of 1/4 plywood on the hinge side as most hinge screws stick out slightly through the back of the jamb this also allows for additional adjustments with shims as needed . Doors can have slight variances in hinge mortising , and jamb assembling so if you're going to make a perfect installation you may need slight adjustments on either jamb leg . I have been hanging interior and exterior doors for over 40 years and have never had any problems or customer complaints. Keep in mind these doors are installed in multi million dollar homes not run and gun tract housing or apartments.
