  • Installing a door is one of those things that seems way more daunting than it really is. With just a few simple steps you can do it too, and I'll show you how. It doesn't even take any crazy fancy tools. The most important thing is to pay attention to gaps and level, and before you know it, the door is up.
    I have a write up here!

    Great video! I've put pre hung doors in before and needed a quick refresher. This was perfect. Thanks... I don't have a nailer so I was wondering... what is the advantage of putting the decking screw thru the door stop? Won't I need 2 more screws, one on either side for stability to go thru the shims? Thanks again!

    • @JessedoesDIY
      @JessedoesDIY  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Thank you, glad I could help! Technically the screw will hold it to the stud and then when the trim goes on it should be nailed to the stud and the frame. The trim will reinforce the frame quite a bit. But if you want to just add a nail to either side of the stop if you dont feel the trim will be enough, feel free to. Good luck on your project!

    Why not put the shims directly behind the hinge take out the center screw and put a 2 1/2 inch screw through the shims and into the frame.

    • @JessedoesDIY

    Great video. I have 3 double-doors to install. They’ve been sitting on the floor waiting for the install. Basically I had an addition built, and 3 original home windows were turned into doorways. The double-doors of course open in the middle, and they are NOT solid doors.. I had shims delivered with the doors. Question…for my application, can I use a nailer like in the video, or would I need screws? What size nails? And can you recommend a nailer that I can look for to purchase? I don’t own one, and I’m not sure of their correct name to search. Thank you.

    • @JessedoesDIY
      @JessedoesDIY  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! If the doors are hollow core and not solid core, a nailer like I used is fine. Solid core means solid wood doors and they may weigh between 80-100 lbs each, hollow might weigh 5-10 lbs. I used a 18 gauge brad nailer with 2" long nails, mine is a Ryobi 18V battery powered version. Good luck!

      For one door the basic install shouldn't take but an hour to remove and replace, them the trim can take an hour, after that it's just waiting for spackle, caulk, and paint to dry. Day is easy depending on your skill level.

      Check it again for square in the hole and level on the hinge side. If it's level on the hinge side and the reveal when the door is closed looks fine then it may be an uneven floor or wall making it off. Or it may just be the trim is uneven. It's hard to say without seeing it

    You know what’s funny? You made a comment about you using 18 gauge nails for the door frame… I’m watching this video because I’m installing a new door frame for my bedroom. The mf that installed this shit didn’t nail or screw it in… no door shims nothing… the only thing holding it was the door trim which was the only thing nailed to the wall. So the door trim and silicone was the only thing holding this door frame… no wonder my door frame broke easy..

    The problem I had is I told Home Depot that I needed a door that would fit a 32" space, but when I got the doors I needed 42" to install them because the doors were prehung. All would have been fine if Home Depot would have asked the bigger questions since most of us aren't builders. So Home Depot is not as of yet accepting my doors back for the correct size.

    • @JessedoesDIY
      @JessedoesDIY  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ooof yeah, that's not cool. I have friends that have been trying to get pre-made doors through home depot for 2 years and they still haven't made them right, and they even came out and measured themselves. Sometimes you just have to be the louder person to get them to fix their mistake because they should've been the ones asking questions and filling out a sizing sheet. Hope you get it squared away

      Home Depot doesn’t always hire people who know how to fix things. I’ve worked there and the majority just sell product they don’t know how to install doors or do plumbing. The only people that know a lot are full time employees or people who used to be in construction/plumbing etc. The slogan they have of you can do it and we can help just really means we can help you find it not help you do installation of products

  • @rickeyjohnson1392
    @rickeyjohnson1392 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    You don’t need shims on hinge side if 2x4 is level. Your making this more complicated then it is.

    • @JessedoesDIY
      @JessedoesDIY  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      If you're in an area when the ground is constantly shifting like here, you'll appreciate that. Sooner or later here I'll have to make a repair and that gives me some room to be able to remove the trim, cut the shims and slide the door tighter to the frame to bring it back into plumb in the future. I personally hate when it's hard mounted to the frame on that side because once it's tight, you have no adjustment left.

    I think it is fine for beginners but for a builder they should do the door panel the correct way.

      I assume a builder knows all the proper steps. I'm trying to simplify it

    Why not make a video of having trim studs not plumb and not level? Everyone has this type of video. Not many have the harder one.

      If I had somewhere to be able to film and show it, I would

    Good video. But I'm still lost and about ready to throw this door out the fucking window.

      @@JessedoesDIY I had a jack of all trades type guy to have it put in! Carpentry just doesn't quite click with me. I'm more of a car guy honestly. But thanks for the reply.

      It really depends on the door type and how bad the opening is. In my case, the walls are oppositional out of level AND the width of the walls is too narrow in some areas and too thick in others, to match the jam width.
