    I don't understand your comment at ~3:49 regarding the door has an inside and outside - shorter side and longer side. How do we determine which is which?

  • @sptrader6316
    @sptrader6316 3 ปีที่แล้ว +21

    I used to use a circular saw with a guide set to about 3/16" and trim the lock side of the door the entire length, only takes a minute, no plane, sanding etc. Gives a nice gap all around. Router the hinges too.

    Hi. Thank you for all the wonderful and informative videos. I do wish that i cal could be so handy like you as a female 😊. Watching your video, I do have questions but I’m going to try to follow exactly what you do ☺️. I did purchase 2 new slab doors to update our current old looking doors. I purchased the standard size and sure needed to trim it down to fit the right size. To purchase a custom door cost more so I’m trying to just trim it myself. The saw that you use, can you share the info so that I can purchase one for the future door change too. I still got about 10 more doors to update. Thank you and more helpful videos to come please. God Bless 🙏🏽

    I strongly believe one should attack the frame before the door (assuming you're okay with repainting it) in order to get a good fit. Otherwise, the next door replacement will require door trimming again. Get the frame cleaned up, and any standard door will fit.

    • @phillyhotboy02
      @phillyhotboy02 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Planning the door is far easier than planning the jam otherwise you'd have to remove the door stop or use a manual planer.

    • @phillyhotboy02
      @phillyhotboy02 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Also there might be nails or screws in the jamb that secure the jamb to the rough frame. Also if it's an exterior door, attacking the frame weakens the structure and the latching integrity.

    Do yourself a favor and get two 1-1/2 chisels. That way you have a spare sharp one when one gets dull. I use a variety of chisels in my carpentry business including a 2-1/2 x 8" slick for cleaning up notches in 6x6 posts. All sharp enough to shave with.

    Ryobi makes a kit to cut the hinge mortises and hole for the knob. I believe it’s designed to reference off the original door (if you have it). Would be a time saver if you’re doing a lot of doors but if it’s just one, maybe not worth the money. Requires a router.

    I have installed many doors looking for more ideas, but this is bad
    (1). when planning the end, you do it the way he shows - you damage the end of door
    (2). you use a square to draw you a straight or you have problems close and moving the door left to right it will
    (3) use square to use a knife to cut lines and keep your fingers away
    (4) small with a flat head cut it at the right height and easy to just to cut low
    you do it his way good luck!!!!!!!@ because it is the wrong

    Jeff, don’t change. You’re great!!! Absolutely my favorite!!! I cannot click on your vids fast enough and always watch to the end. I will often watch many times simply because you pack so much great info in I dont want to miss even one detail!!!! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻😁😁😁😁😁
    Also, if I were younger and you were not happily married to a lovely woman, this ole gal would have to move to Canada!!! 😜❤️

    Any real disadvantage to getting rid of that hardware that goes around the latch instead of chiseling - just wondering if it makes the latch more likely to break through that remaining 1/8" edge if the door gets pushed too hard.

    A bit late to the party but was just trying to fix my warped interior hollow door. It won't close because the bottom of the door is hitting the outside door jamb. I did the warp door test and it is the mid to top part of the door that is warped inwards (towards the inside of the room). Should I change the whole door or try to straighten the door to save hassle? Not sure how to straighten it out other than putting weight on the warped end? Please help thanks.

    Just did an install like you're doing here and left a 1/8th in gap at the top as you did. Unfortunately, the customer could see a crack at the top of the door because the old doorstop was too thin. Try as I could, They saw it as my cutting the door short. There's no pleasing some people
