  • Thanks for checking in! In this video I will install a pre-hung door, BUT…. Im going to TIME myself! Maybe this can be the fastest install ever recorded! LOL Not only installing the door, but also casing the door as well ready for paint…Can YOU beat me?
    00:00 | Intro, SET A RECORD TIME?
    01:04 | TIME STARTS
    06:03 | TIME STOPS, THANK YOU, SUB PLEASE

    I am a professional at using these tools. Please use the proper safety equipment for each tool and refer to the manual for operating instructions!

    TITEBOND Wood Glue - amzn.to/3yGiyLH
    For the first time ever I TIME myself on what it takes to install a pre-hung door from start to finish. 4 minutes and 54 seconds! YEA DO IT!!! I will have a video coming out soon describing each step I take to install a pre-hung door. Each door and door opening are a little different so I will go into better detail what's going through my head!
    When measuring your casing remember to add 3/16” to your casing legs and 3/8” to the casing header. That way you will have a nice reveal around the door jamb. I my case I cut 45 degree miters with my Dewalt Chop Saw, but depending on the style of your casing, you might cut it straight or 0 degree on the saw.
    When measuring the RO (rough opening, stud to stud) for your door you will need 2 inches of room for the door jamb and shims. SO MAKE SURE you are buying a door 2 inches SMALLER in width from your door opening.
    Not all framing is plumb or level in every home, so do your best to keep the bubble in the lines of your level when installing a door. Does a door in your home “ghost” (open on its own)? Most likely the hinge side of the door is out of plumb or level.
    Special Thanks:
    Thanks Bryan for taking the time to help and plan how to shoot the video! Also thanks for keeping us motivated and moving towards our futures!

    we got our door with the trim on one side
    never used glue
    Shimmed hinges, striker and the bottom of the knob side
    used way less nails
    This was government housing, apartments, wedge base
    Floors were vct and cutback
    Loved seeing it again!

    Good job..finally a pro video from a crazy animal installer Lol.. I have 40 yrs experience hanging doors and everything else, I only use that technique on metal framws where I can just use trim screws into the metal jamb thru casing to hang the unit..I just like to hang doors as most people do n go back n trim after.. close to 30 yrs ago pollacks who were trimming in a development I worked at hung units the same way but with no shims..it works...I don't give too many compliments on carpentry videos on TH-cam, I'm usually roasting the video poster or commenters for faking their supposed knowledge, but u bud, get a thumbs up. Very impressive. I was skeptical at first but this guy made it look easy and that door isn't moving. I wonder if this is doable with a door frame that is completely out of square or what the work around would be there. Sometimes carpenters are at the mercy of the trades that came before them, especially if they didn't do the framing. Guy is legit though and I hope he makes bank because you aren't finding someone else who can do it like that.

    That was good, I take 6-7 minutes complete with casing. I don't use shims I just make sure my nails hit the stud when nailing my casing to the wall to keep the jamb from twisting, I haven't had any issues. Also, I like shooting nails close to the door stop when securing the jamb so when the painter caulks he covers the nail holes at the same time. What I do works out great, did my home and I haven't had any problems, keep up the good hard work. Your video was awesome, although I've done this awhile I always like seeing how other carpenters install, never know I might learn something new and I always do. I like the glue, I'm gonna start doing that.

Maybe sometime in 2022 (im trying to find property for a new build residential home) we can buy a property and get footage of all the different trades working on the home. I already have my spec home prints which will include hardwood in the basement. I have a walkthrough video of a custom ranch new build from a year ago with hardwood throughout…that’s going to be my spec home for the future since my buddy designed the home.

    So you cut the casing before, and measured the door jams had enough height and width before also? Each door is different in old houses… that may work for new houses/ builds but I don’t think 5 mins for old renovated house. My one door way was 3/4 difference from left to right, the door gap was exactly same as the door jam so had to cut off door jam and 1/2” off the door and refill the plug in the bottom .. that was just the third door I ever fitted.. Fitting in doorways like you have there must be a dream .. but one thing with old houses you learn lots of new tricks! Did love idea of fitting casing first .. but in these doorways it would be disaster… one day maybe one day 😊 Great technique for new builds, even though I can’t see me ever working on new builds 😊 Now I’ve started spray painting the doors and the door jams before I fit them and I just have to pop the handles on when they are fitted and they are good to go. Four more to go and I’ll probably never fit a door again 😂

    Cool vid and entertaining. I'm assuming that was a hollow core door🤔 If so wondering why the need for shims at all. But if solid I get using shims on hinges.

    • @huntercarlson5446
      @huntercarlson5446  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It was a hollow core door. I use shims on every door I install, partly due to Colorado’s weather fluctuations. Also most track homes “require shimming doors” in the signed contract (they never check) so I just shim every door regardless...

    Where can you buy casing pre cut lol? Gotta add that time in, but fast. 7-8 mins for a good carpenter is about average. If you are taking much longer just gotta practice more that’s all.

    can you show one where you replace/install an interior ( maybe solid core) door on an uneven finished floor from the very start with no trim or shims pre-cut and no prep work done...Ie checking the floor for level, jamb bottoms cut etc? ... maybe the jamb sits tight on a slab where the carpet is cut out around the previous jamb and the trim need to sit on top of the carpet.
    I think you'd do a fine job but it would be a more realistic portrayal of what a guy comes up against on a side job where they only have one door to replace/install amongst their other possibly unrelated tasks on that site... the time to do all the prep work steps adds up.
    I have a bad habit of over complicating things which takes longer but I make the finish product look good and probably more solid than it needs to be so I think I could learn from your quickness which I really like.

    Hollow core? How do you shim the reveals between the shut door and jamb legs or do you just leave them as is? Very nice job though

    • @huntercarlson5446
      @huntercarlson5446  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you Zach. Yes hollow core door, but I do the same with solid as well just a couple extra nails through the casing for support...I do leave the jamb legs “as is” when shimming that gap. I want the shim to be tight so the finish nail doesn’t flex the jamb in when shooting. But don’t make it to tight and flex the jamb out, you might make it harder to close the door(bind the hinge). The only exception is when the door is on finished flooring and the jamb leg isn’t parallel or perpendicular to a seam in the floor. I try to square of the jamb the best I can, but don’t over flex the hinge side with the shim or the binding issue comes into play.
      Hope I answered your question...let me know if you have any more!

      Both guns are Metabo air finish nailers. One of them are 16ga( I’m using 2” nails) and the other is 18ga( I’m using 1 1/4” nails. I have Amazon links in the description if you are interested or you can find these tools at Lowes. Thanks for watching and have a blessed day 😎

      yeah, you either get it level, or you get a nice reveal. Rarely both happen

    • @huntercarlson5446
      @huntercarlson5446  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry I can’t go back and show you, lol! But I assure you the reveal from casing to the door is always 3/16” roughly (muscle memory) but the reveal from drywall to casing isn’t going to be perfect…mainly because I level the hinge side door jamb for every door I hang…framing and drywall wont be installed with a 6ft. Stabila level, so my door jamb wont always match the wall…Thanks for watching! Have a blessed day 😎

  • @boat_life

    you can do this with the lightweight doors only. if you have a heavy solid doors , those nails won't hold for too long, you will need screws.

    It looks like you are using an 18g and a 16g nailer. Do you ever encounter situations where a 15g nailer would be better than a 16g? Or vice versa? I have an 18g and am trying to decide on 15 vs 16

    You are using two different guns, can you explain for a newbie please?

    • @huntercarlson5446
      @huntercarlson5446  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes totally! I’m using two different finish nailers specifically for the size of the nails. One is a 16 gauge nail and the other is 18 gauge. The 18ga is used for for smaller pieces of trim or when your shooting thru a smaller thickness of material, the 18ga also leaves smaller holes for the painter. Each gun has different options of nail length as well. Each carpenter will vary with what gun and length nail they use on a project, just comes down to personal choice… hope this helps! Thanks for watching and have a blessed day 😎
