How I Install A Prehung Interior Door (Part 2)

- Continued-- Next, I center the hinge side of the jamb with the wall, and I nail it at the top shims.
I use the level to make sure the jamb is plumb before I nail off the other two shim locations.
If it’s leaning in or out it will cause the door to open or shut on its own.
Now I turn to the latch side- I align the jamb with the wall and nail the top off.
Then standing inside the room I open and shut the door to make sure it’s landing evenly on the door stop.
As I work my way down, adding shims and nailing, I also check the reveal on the front to make sure it consistent.
At this point I start adding shims wherever they are needed, including the top- checking the reveal as I go.
These holes get filled with putty when the door is painted.
Now the door shuts with an even reveal on all three sides.
I replace one screw in each hinge with a longer 2 1/2” screw- this secures the door to the framing and ensure it won’t move.
Finally- I used my multi-tool to cut off all the shims.
Let me know if you would like to see the casing installed. @hausplans

You do phenomenal work and I too would love to see how you do casings
Thanks 😊
Your work seems to be perfect. I've never seen a door installed using so many shims. That's the way you insure that the installation is perfect. This makes so much sense and deserves so much respect. Kudos.
In Europe we have better doorframes without nails.
I agree
@Carbon_Knuckles but can't own guns 😂
The long screws should be behind the hinge. Just in case if painters pull out all the screws the jamb is still set.
Proven yet again that the internet knows best👍
@Tekagi Sorry bud, real finish carpenters put the screw in the jamb mortise. You're wrong.
@Tekagi They are carpenters, not scientists. You think they use actual logic?!
@Tekagialways add a screw behind hinge.
@Tekagi here's your logical explanation for putting it behind the hinges: the screws are color matching to the hinges, looks better than the drywall screws or green decking screws the carpenter pulls out of his truck
It seems so simple but theres so many apartments where you have to careful not to let go when opening the doors so it doesn’t swing into the wall.
True
Because they're apartments. . .
Production on a mass scale tends to mean rushing and subpar quality
It cause the wall isnt plum .the door will swing open or closed by itself which ever way it leaning
@@SonnieRanno-fl5eb It’s not a hard fix with a bubble level and shims, most rentals though don’t take the time to do these things properly.
The differences between experienced professionals
You make it so smooth and easy I thing this is best way
I have tow doors and Frame I will do this way
👍
Great job. It's incredible how many carpenters I've met that struggle with hanging prehung doors.
Thanks 👍
A real carpenter will hang any door in any way needed. These pre hung doors are for building sites full of odd jobbers . Didn’t you see how far away the final shot was, it was so that you didn’t see the massive gaps around the door and how uneven they are
We nail the shims plumb to the frame (hinge side). Than place the door and nail that side off. Than shim as you need to on the other side. 2” 1/2 - 3” 16 gauge nails and no screws
The only thing I did differently. I used 3" screws everywhere. Because I used solid core doors and solid Casings. The homes are rentals...
First thing you have to do is check the level of the floor in case you have to cut one jamb leg so the header is level.
Thanks for this tip! I love when it’s just the tip…
You are just like your sister…
Never cut a jam leg unless you are installing it on a finished floor
Great video! And I would like to see the casing video👍
Thanks, Coming soon!
Let’s see that casing install!! Great work!!
Coming soon!
After fixing with nails and screws, foam up the gaps behind the jam, they are absolutely rock solid after that!
I have set thousands of doors 99% of them all have casing on one side that makes installing the door so much easier like 100 times easier
I’ve use trim carpenters to do it that way before as well. It’s whatever you’re comfortable with that works for you.
Put that 2 1/2 inch screw behind the hinge next to the top hinge hole, and you're golden.
Would love to see the trim work added. Looks great so far
Thanks 👍
Great job guys no one ever uses enough shims any more. Can't get lazier than trimming one side and relying on the casing to hold the door in place.
I just hold the jamb where I want it a air nail it , a shot of expanding spray foam to replace the shims , soon I had the entire crew copying this technique . 👍🇨🇦
Looks good. Experience tells me that shimming the top may cause problems if there is settling. I always checked for twist in the jambs. Doors were sometimes warped. I wish the multitool had been around when I was trimming.
It's fine if you don't live by the river, and if you do hollow core doors aren't going to work
Good job bout time someone who knows how to hang a pre-hung door... keeping it simple and fast!! Bet this guy can hang 12 per day!
Skills
Thanks 👍
Fantastic job!! only thing I would mention is I don’t nail through the doorstop until the end in case i need to adjust it. then I use shorter nails on the stop in case something shifts and I need to adjust it in the future.
That screw in the hinge is so smart.
Great tutorial installing a prehung door, I would like to see the casing installed though.
Check out the next video in the series we show that as well
Good job .. I hung doors for 15 yrs.
I nailed casing to one side
👍
Best description on how to do this. Thank you for sharing. I’m sharing this
Awesome, thank you!
yes yes do the frame too bro,it looks grrrrreat
I go all 3 screws at each hinge, couple extra minutes but well worth it as it prevents future maintenance at the hinges. Those pre hung frames rent the best material so the longer screws is an added step worth the time.
Only two things I would add to this is one check the floor for level and two never nail through your shams nail blow your shams this allows you to do fine-tuning later
Someone that knows how to hang a freaking door! Also, love that it's not one of those stupid clamshell doors!
Thanks! By clamshell you mean split jam I assume. I hate those doors as well!
That door is not going no where
You should set the stops separately, after the jams are secured.
For the last 52 years. If the pre hung door did not come with casing on one side, then we install casing first on one side then hang the door nailing the casing first. Then shims then the other side casing. We have never used a level. Only because the ceiling might not be level or the adjacent wall the door hits up against. Same out come with way less work.
You even started on the hinge side like a pro. I’ve seen so many people screw this up.
Very cool!! This was a nice video and explaination. Now I understand how to fix my error!!😊
👍
Ohh your such a man . 😂just playing bro you do good work
Thanks 😅
My favorite part is the multi tool. Got to use one the other day. Cut like butter
They are an amazing tool
how would someone do this without one?
I personally like a door that shuts by itself.
That means that jamb is leaning in at the top causing the door in the fall short
@hausplans yeah. I like the doors in my house to be shut, so when we replaced them all I tilted some of them ever so slightly so they would swing most of the way shut.
Same with a sliding door I have covering the laundry room. It self closes slowly.
wiggle saw for the win !! good job !
😂👍
Well done ! Got a person at my house to install 20 doors and trim , had to remove all doors and install myself bad installer from major store contractor
Frustrating
Holy crap finally somebody doing it the right way 👏
Thanks
Very good job thanks
Thanks for using the proper shims
You bet
You must of been a high end trim guy,, that’s the way we learned how to hang a door correctly! , the only way I do it , feels solid , and becomes part of the house , all around ,,
Thanks
Nice work bro 😎
😊
Yes, I want to see the case install
Nice perfectly done
Thanks a lot 😊
Try installing a long screw behind the hinge. Counter sunk of course. That way when the door is removed for painting it will not affect the door frame when put back together and you won’t have to worry if the put the long screw back. 👍
👍
when i first seen that lil saw, i thought it was the useless thing. then i bought one, i use it everyday now!
Same! 👍
Put that screw under the hinge leaf so it can’t get messed with
How did you install casing?
We posted a video showing the casing install
Looking great bruh 👌 😎 💪 👍
Finally a carpenter who does as I was taught.
👍👍
"as taught" 😂😂😂😂
How bout a Real carpenter that does'nt need visible nails or don't need any nails?
Holy shims batman, $60 HD door. Get er done! Thats all for solid & expensive doors? 😂 In my own opinion😮
Nice working
Thank you so much for this video
😊👍
Finish nails to install a door that new 👍 nice
Same comment as you casing video.
A faster way is out there if you think about it. Been hanging doors with out a level for 25 years. The door will tell you when it level and plumb.
Only small issue I see. Generally I open the hinge plate for the 2 1/2 inch anchor screw. Because painter is going to remove your screw from the hingle, wrack your frame and the it's your later problem. Flipping the hingle and countersunk screw under the hinge will remain forever. Takes an additional 2 minutes per door, but I never have to return to a job I did.
Perfect job installation A+
Thanks
Great job! Most so-called carpenters have no idea how to properly hang a door.
Thanks! 👍
You should put long screw like that u should remove all 3 screws put under this way if they have remove hinges or replace door fram stays in intact
Yes man we want to see it !
Love this you earned a sub ❤
Thanks so much!
Nice job
Just like you are supposed to, good job Pro
my dad makes sure he doesn't nail in the door stopper just incase the door is not closing flush. Also when it's painted the stopper will rub if it's to flush on the hinge side. we always leave a bigger reveal. Humidity will also expand it in the future.
very helpful information
You are good and did an excellent job.
Thank you very much!
Beautiful work guy
Thank you kindly
Great work keep up videos
Thanks, will do!
Yes would like to see the casing installed

Clean work 👍🏽👍🏽
Thanks
That's a great job!
Thanks!
xi love to see the casing. I can see you did this before and you brought ideas into my life. I hope to be the handyman I have seen on youtube.
Yes I like to see the casing

That’s a good way to do that. Sort of that’s the way my boss does it and makes me do it. I prefer installing the door so that a two year old cannot knock it down.
I use 2 1/2" finish screws, so easy to adjust the shims and you need way less wood filler. A screw is times stronger than brad nails and will not loosen over time.
That’s not a bad idea
Yes Sir on video of casing installation. Thank you

What’s happens if reveal is off on either side of door but it’s plumb level square? I’m gonna set my 3 doors this Monday and wondering. My first doors. Is that just not possible or have you seen this happen? I’m hoping I can set the three doors fairly quickly
Good work
Thanks
Nice work 👍🏻
Thanks ✌️
Yes I would like to see the casing install

good job
Great job
It's fun when the wall isn't level and you have to shave the sheet rock so the mounding sits flat.
Been there done that😂
Yup, f ing framers
CASINGS CASINGS CASINGS! You need to finish the install of course. Thanks. Stay safe everyone.

Good job
Thanks
yes I would like see the casing
👍
Just nail the casing on the hinge side level it and make sure the reveal is the same nail it to the wall and shim the other side at the hinge shim to make reveal right on nob side case the other side and put long screw in each hinge after the fact so much faster probably put up three to your one
Nice good work
Heck yea.. nice job
👍
You can shim the top of the jamb on either side and it'll hold the door up for you so you don't have to shoot any nails until the whole hinge side is plumb.
Plus, once the door is set we replace the hinge screws with longer ones that go into the stud
great job man, God blessyo
Much appreciated
Beautiful ❤
Looks good . Yes . This is how your supposed to do it
👍
This is possible for the experienced. Much harder for diy to do it this way ?
Would you plumb the jamb in a wall that leans out of plumb, or just match the wall lean on one side and then make sure the second side was in the same plane as the first side?
As a carpenter of 34 years good work I would worry about longer hinge screw, but in saying that it can't hurt, cut packers rite size no need for trimming later on
Smart
