      Nichelle - no problem at all ! Thankyou for watching ! I appreciate the comment !
      If the Gap is larger, it's sometimes better to just use more shims, which makes them each thinner, which then makes them easier to cut. So you'll cut maybe four thin shims, rather then one thick shim.
      Thanks for watching,
      Mike

    I have had a door I have reversed still waiting to be done. I now see it would be so much easier for me to remove the right swinging door and get a pre hung LEFT swing door and follow the easy way you explained the process. I am ashamed that I started something and thought that I could just switch the door and plane the high spots. What a problem I made for myself. Just getting a new door and trim will make MY project so much more easier now. Thank you so much for this video.

      @@connelljacintorealestate4361 one thing - with an entry door you can’t shim the sides up because the bottom threshold must contact the sill 100% ! So when you remove the old door the first thing I’d do I make the bottom sill perfectly level in both directions. Can’t shim the bottom sill. I have a video on converting a window to door. Sorta talks about it in that video. Might be more relevant for exterior door install.

    Thank you for the great video. I need to install a double door on a closet that opens in the center to clear a gun safe. I am certain the framing is not square. When doing a double door would it be best to plum one side and start the install from there just like you did here working your way around the door even though both sides are hinge sides? Thanks!

    One potential problem with the 1 inch shims on the latch side is trim casings may look "off balance" by 1 inch if there is a narrow wall like a door near a corner or in a bathroom.

    • @FamilyDIYtv
      @FamilyDIYtv  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      correct. I def left the casing detail out of the video and it's important i agree. if the finishing casing placement is important in a specific install it should be considered before installing anything - agree. But in most cases it doesn't matter if it's 1'' this way or that way.

    If only mine were this easy to do.. my framing is twisted I guess from humidity and settling with drywall covering the framing

    • @FamilyDIYtv
      @FamilyDIYtv  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      make it easy for yourself - fix the framing first and make the hinge side plumb. hanging a door in a messed up frame is way harder than just fixing the framing.

    How did you make sure the door was plum forward and backward, relative to the plane of the closed door? That is, what if the framing was not plumb? You lined it up to the drywall, which might not be vertical.

    • @FamilyDIYtv
      @FamilyDIYtv  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Mike,
      Thanks for the comment and question - it makes sense. I'm not to concerned with the framing being plumb that way as much as i'm concerned with the hinge side (left to right) being plumb. The wall is what it is and doesn't impact the overall install. so, i guess what i'm trying to say is IMO it doesn't matter that much. if the wall was that out of plumb you'd have bigger issues, i'm sure it's plumb enough. I even walked around my house today to see how plumb my existing (builder installed 30 yrs ago) door frames were, most were very out of plumb that way and this doesn't impact the door at all. I hope this makes sense...
      does this make sense ?
      Walk around your house and check how plumb the doors are that way...
      let me know ...
      Thanks again !

    What if I have flooring down? I’m replacing old doors with 3 panel maple doors. The flooring wasn’t all the way through the threshold nor out away from the jam enough to put new pre-hung in.

    • @FamilyDIYtv
      @FamilyDIYtv  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Brian, I’m not sure I understand fully. I’m sorry - I don’t want to give wrong advice.
      I’d say do the first door slowly and see if it works out. If not, you may need to cut the jams if you floor is unlevel so that you can go directly the the floor.
      In that case you just run a level line in the door way and measure down each side and then determine you high point. How ever much it’s high, remove that much from the jam. That will make the door level and the jams hitting the floor.

  • @nickjackson5062
    @nickjackson5062 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Except now you have a 2 inch gap on your latch side. You should center the door in the jam.

    • @FamilyDIYtv
      @FamilyDIYtv  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      this is correct, but doesn't cause issue, plus it will be covered by casing. Being centered in RO doesn't impact door functionality, especially an interior door.

    Advice on what I could do if the stud that will have the hinge side has a slight twist towards the bottom? How can I shim that?

    • @FamilyDIYtv
      @FamilyDIYtv  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      run a screw into it to force the stud straight, if framed correctly there should be another stud behind it …. or just persuade it with a couple hammer hits …. if that doesn’t work i’d chisel it off. just make as flat as you can.

    Since I see you're a good responder, I have a question? I can't find a video that tells me if the prehung door should be kept off the subfloor by about 1/2 inch if we're going install carpet flooring. Or whether it should be installed before or after flooring?

    • @FamilyDIYtv
      @FamilyDIYtv  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      to be safe I'd install 1/2 up, it will keep the door from dragging on the carpet after installed.
      But this depends on the thickness of carpet, if very thin carpet you may want to go to floor, but if thick carpet you may want to install high.
      Either way, if the door drags on carpet after you install, you can always cut 1/2 inch off bottom of door.
      Sorry - it's not a one size fits all answer..

    I suppose if you don’t have nail guns, screws are an option. I’ve installed doors for 30 years and never used screws to install interior doors.

    • @FamilyDIYtv
      @FamilyDIYtv  ปีที่แล้ว

      I have about 8 nail guns or more lol(yeah to many) … Just because you’ve done something for 30 years doesn’t make it right, or wrong for that matter. I prefer screws for door installs but if you prefer nails, go wild my man. Maybe one day I’ll prefer nails, who knows, I definitely have changed over the years, I hope for the better! So if nails are truly better, maybe one day I’ll prefer them!

      Lara - great question. I talk about this at the 3:45 ish mark and again later in the video. Thats why I add shims to the bottom before I install the door. If it's really bad you should.concider added two shims. Then pulling out the ones that are needed during install.

      Yes 2” 18 ga nails are perfect
      Using screws to hang a 10 pound hollow core door is unnecessary and very slow.
      Even when I install heavy Doors I install them with nails. I then go into each centre screw of each hinge and install a long screws so it catches the 2 x 4 framing
      I install doors every day for a living, trust me nails are fine

  • @rayalexander873
    @rayalexander873 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Was that a solid core door? I see most installs use nails, I was going to either rent a gun or buy one since I’ll be doing all the doors eventually. I never thought about screws because I didn’t know if it would damage the wood

    • @FamilyDIYtv
      @FamilyDIYtv  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ray - no, it's a hollow core door. I use screws, don't see a need to use nails. Also, for a DIYer screws are allot more forgiving, meaning if you make a mistake you can pull the screw out. With a nail it becomes a tad harder to make those small adjustments. I'd invest in a nice drill/impact combo and trim nail gun.
      If your worrying about the woods splitting, just predrill the holes.
      Good luck with your project and consider subscribing !
