    At the start of the year, I committed to a move to Hobart and to study at UTAS. I must admit it's been an incredibly challenging transition, coming from Melbourne. I have been very disappointed with the empty promises of UTAS and the delivery of education. Seemingly the transition to the city, is impacting the university experience. Did/does Flinders feel vibrant? I'm very interested in their Geospatial program. Though new, it feels like a University that is engaged with their students and wants to see them thrive, with support and learning. Whom would I contact to get clarity on the teaching/learning environment. Online study I find, is very difficult for me at 38.

    • @ChoosingYourUni
      @ChoosingYourUni  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! Good on you for taking a risk and moving away for studies. I respect that. I guess it depends what you mean by "vibrant". Flinders is a very pretty campus a outside the centre of Adelaide. During the week it is busy enough, but late in the afternoons (and late in the week) it gets quiet like lots of outer metropolitan uni campuses. It's a very good university. I've got a video coming up on the Pros and Cons of Flinders, which you might find helpful, so stay posted!

    Knowing about the campus, rankings and support is good and all, but what about the courses themselves? Do you know what Flinders’s teaching method is like? Good day! I know that it's been years since you uploaded this video, therefore so many things might have changed by now. I wish to do Masters in Secondary Teaching and I was wondering if Adelaide has a lot of secondary schools where I can apply for a job after course completion, and if it is easier to get a job over there compared to other territories. Although it has lower rankings compared to UniSA and UoA, in ComparEd, Flinders Uni has much better reviews than the other two universities. Should I apply based on that?
    I hope you can give your unbiased opinion and advise on this matter.

    • @ChoosingYourUni

      There is plenty of teaching work everywhere in Australia right now. Where are you reading the reviews?
      Teaching is a regulated course with very specific outcomes required for accreditation, so there will be a lot of similarities between the content of the courses at each of those universities.

    • @ChoosingYourUni
      @ChoosingYourUni  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Okay, I understand.
      My view is the health programs at Flinders are possibly stronger than those at UniSA (though the exception is if you’re looking at a sub-speciality where UniSA is particularly strong). However, I would say UniSA’s business programs are stronger than Flinders.
      UniSA is city centre, which is nice since Adelaide isn’t huge. Finders is outer suburban.
      So to me it’s probably a question of if you want to preference the health component over the medical. Given both programs are management programs, rather than clinical, my gut feeling is that UniSA might make a stronger choice.

      Hmmm. I can see there are some bad reviews up there but it’s very few compared with the number of students that go through that program.
      Remember that pissed off people are more likely to try to find a place to vent a d share their experiences than people who were satisfied.
      Not to say these comments aren’t valid. They may well be (and I haven’t studied that program). But you should try to control for the biases of the people involved.
      It can’t hurt you to write to “Jean” on that post and ask for advice. But ask them to be specific so you can decide if their experience is likely to happen to you.
      At the same time I’d contact the faculty or uni directly to see if you can find other students (ie satisfied ones) who you can get in touch with two.
      It’s always good to hear both sides of the story.

    Where would you say studying medicine is better at, flinders or Adelaide?

    • @ChoosingYourUni
      @ChoosingYourUni  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the Flinders program is awesome. That said, UoA does have an affiliation with the new hospital right in the middle of Adelaide. Both are great and if you get admitted to either you've got great career prospects.

    Thanks so much for doing this. It's hard to find non-promotional videos of uni campuses so you'll definitely get a subscription from me!
    Do you by any chance know much about the Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics? I'm considering doing this degree before applying for the medicine degree. I've seen mixed reviews online about the health & medical degrees, but for some reason I have a really good feeling about flinders.
    Also, do you know if Flinders is the only university in Adelaide to offer a graduate medicine course? I couldn't find anything on the UniSA website and Adelaide uni seems to only offer undergrad medicine which isn't ideal for me as I'd love to study nutrition & dietetics beforehand.
    Cheers 😀☺️

      My pleasure!
      Great choice for a first degree. The current research on nutrition/diet and it’s impact on longevity and health span is unreal.
      I’d highly recommend checking out Dr Rhonda Patrick - she runs a fantastic podcast on health span (although it has a terrible name: Found My Fitness - the content is first rate though!)
      I’ve heard about some negative reviews of Flinders med and I’m always wary of one off negative reviews. Remember that people are always WAY more likely to write a review if they’ve had a negative experience than a positive one. So a negative review doesn’t necessarily represent the average views of a cohort.
      With both positive and negative reviews it’s ways important to try to see where they align with your interests and to think about the biases of the authors (including me!)
      I wouldn’t overthink it too much. Start the program that looks best aligned to you. If you get there and it sucks shit, you can always change to another uni or program. You’ve got plenty of time (unless you’re 80 years old…. Which I’m assuming you’re not 🤣)
      Nothing against 80 year olds.
