  • JCU Cairns sits 15 kilometres north of the city centre.
    It's a clean, open campus nestled at the bottom of rainforested hills and within striking distance of the coast.
    The university has made a lot of effort over recent years to position itself as a global "university for the tropics".
    And in this it does well - ranking highly in disciplines like marine biology, tropical health and medicine.
    In this video, I take a stroll around campus and take you through all the strengths of the institution.
    By the end of this video, you should have a much better idea about if JCU Cairns is the right uni for you!

    Hii rob, just wanted to know whats the current status of international students entry for the autumn 2021 intake due to covid.....

    • @ChoosingYourUni
      @ChoosingYourUni  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      At this stage Australia's international border is still closed. However, they are increasing the number of places in hotel quarantine and are also talking of doing a trial to bring international students in on charter flights. But nothing is confirmed.
      The most likely scenario is that no students will be able to come in once there is a vaccine. The current trials are looking promising so I think it might be possible by the middle of next year (but that's just a guess).

    • @ChoosingYourUni
      @ChoosingYourUni  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That would be a good uni for that. Cairns is totally reliant on tourism so I would guess that the uni would have strong industry linkages up there.
      Salary - impossible to say right now because the tourism industry has been very hard hit by covid

    • @ChoosingYourUni
      @ChoosingYourUni  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Personally, for me, I’d choose Griffith - it’s a top program and the Gold Coast is a more lively area. But it is more expensive to live and tourism is the lifeblood of Cairns (obviously very important on the GC too) so there are positives there.

    Are you planning on doing a review of University of Wollongong anytime soon? I’m a future international student from the US and I’m having a hard time deciding between Wollongong, Murdoch University, La Trobe, and James Cook University. They all have such great things, but I really like the regional and smaller towns of Cairns/Townsville & Wollongong. What is the difference in vibes between those two, as well as living expenses? I’m studying Wildlife Conservation. Love the videos! 💙

      Cairns won’t be for everyone because it’s a smaller campus, but I really like it. It’s laid back, warm and easy to get around. Lots of work opportunities in tourism and hospitality there too.

  • @14xx07

    I’m a high introvert and the thought of a overly communal and high activity campus truly scares me. Am making the effort to put myself out of my comfort zone but am cautious not to over do it.
    The possibility to explore Townsville campus and the activities around are incredibly interesting for me to stay a year in. Thou as someone who doesn’t drive, sounds like its gonna be an issue for me to go get daily needs?
    Between these two campus life and vibes, which do you think would be more suitable for someone like myself? Hope to hear from you soon :)

      This is the video for you: Being an Introvert at University [A Life That Travels Interview with Thea Orozco of Introvertology]
      th-cam.com/video/FS4UjIYBPLw/w-d-xo.html
      Townsville is bigger than Cairns, for sure, but it’s still not like one of the big unis in the main capitals. I like the laid back vibe.
      Cairns is a small campus and it’s not really in the city centre. But Cairns has lots of fun stuff on offer for students - lots of work, the reef, mountains and rainforest.
      Townsville has some fun stuff too - like Magnetic Island. The campus has a bit more life than Cairns, but still won’t be crazy.
      Is there a reason you’ve chosen JCU? You could also look at CDU in Darwin (in the tropics) or a smaller regional uni. There are many good ones.

      Hi Sunny,
      There aren’t many international students on that campus, but is that a problem?
      It will mean you’re more likely to end up with local friends and connections and surely that’s a good thing in terms of finding work?
      As long as the border is open and tourism is open again there is plenty of casual and part time work in Cairns (but right now with the border closed there is less).
