    It seems that most of Aussie's universities have beautiful campuses from your videos. People abroad can now see that Australia is a good alternative to the two usual suspects of the US and the UK, although those two countries still dominate the university rankings at the top worldwide as well as the number of Nobel prizes won.

    • @ChoosingYourUni
      @ChoosingYourUni  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      If you’re basing quality on uni campuses...
      Australia has a higher % of its universities in the top 1000 unis worldwide than both the USA and UK. So unless you’re in the very top tier of institutions in those countries, you’re academically better off in Australia.

    • @eyeofthetiger6002
      @eyeofthetiger6002 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ChoosingYourUni lol, that's not what I meant at all but a beautiful campus is an added bonus in addition to academic reputation. You guys have pretty good universities overall, perhaps the next goal is to have an Aussie uni to crack the top 25? Btw,do you have an ivy League group as in the US or the UK equivalent the Russell group of research intensive universities? In the UK, the bulk of government research grants are allocated to the Russell group institutions in the main.

    • @ChoosingYourUni
      @ChoosingYourUni  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey Eyeofthetiger - yeah; I figured you didn’t mean that but I just like being specific for anyone who might read the comments quickly and miss the nuance of our conversation.
      Yes, we have a grouping called the “Group of 8” - the leading “research intensive” unis in Australia.
      The reality is that any uni that’s high up in the rankings (ie inside the top 300 in the world) has strong processes. A single number doesn’t tell a whole story and I’d always encourage people to look at how an institution performs in the niche area that that person is interested in. There are PLENTY of unis globally that outrank Harvard in their specific niche. That’s not the only thing to consider (eg the network and presitge at Harvard is obviously a big deal) but it’s well worth considering.

    • @eyeofthetiger6002
      @eyeofthetiger6002 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ChoosingYourUni agree, but the trouble is Harvard is the richest university in the world by a country mile and with such wealth you immediately create an unequal playing field, although perhaps that shouldn't create complacency as there are now 2 Chinese universities ranked in the world's top 20 with many more to follow in the near future?! Perhaps Harvard has met its match when it comes up against the fiscal largesse of the Chinese state?😂 Would agree with you about the prestige thing though, perhaps only Oxford and Cambridge can match it in that regard.

You'll grow and learn and although things are hard when you're away from home it opens up all types of new experiences and possibilities you would never experience in the comforts of your home/ friends and family. Hello Rob. I'm hesitating on choosing between UQ and QUT architecture in major, and which uni would you recommend? And why? Thanks! I heard that QUT is a more friendly college compared to UQ for the students, and the graduates from QUT in the major of architecture are easier to get employed in architecture firms.

      QUT “traditionally” viewed as more industry connected and practical, UQ traditionally viewed as more research intensive.

      This is a really good question! And it’s completely normal to feel a little nervous about this. However, over the years, I’ve spoken with many students from UQ, and overall people are really happy with the social life there. Because it’s such a large institution and there are so many clubs and societies, there are tons of opportunities to engage with students from all sorts of backgrounds. As an extrovert, I think you’ll have no problems in settling in and finding your tribe at this university.

    • @ChoosingYourUni
      @ChoosingYourUni  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hmmm, that's tricky. They are both great unis.
      I'd consider:
      - The quality of the degree programs and how students rate them (look up health on Compared.edu.au)
      - What sorts of practical experiences are built into the degree: internships, clinical placements, international study opportunities.
      - What extracurricular activities catch your eye the most (leadership programs, clubs and societiies, sport etc).
      - What you're hoping for from the city - Melbourne and Brisbane are VERY different.
      Across these areas you're going to find a lot of overlap between the two unis but there will also be some standout differences.
      Just remember to always choose based on strengths that align with your priorities.

    • @ChoosingYourUni

      It's not far from the city at all. You could easily ride a bike there (through the suburb of West End), and the ferry ride is very nice! Buses are frequent too. Plenty of casual and part time work in Brisbane.

      Yep.

      Be aware that “on campus” is a bit different in Australia compared to somewhere like the USA, for example. It’s changing and becoming more lively and engaging but it’s not the whole “college campus” experience at most Aussie unis as you might find elsewhere in the world.

      You’ll need to do your own research on that. There’s also no such thing as “free”. Everything, even the best scholarships, come with strings attached.

      Any suggestions you have for getting an international scholarships and recognition to study there?

    • @ChoosingYourUni
      @ChoosingYourUni  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Getting a scholarship will be partly based on your academic ability and partly based on the other things that you have done.
      Good marks help, but if I were to focus on something to get myself a scholarship, I would work hard at adding extracurricular experiences to my resume: internships, volunteering, leadership, community development.
      If you can show a university that you are a valued member of YOUR community, they are more likely to want you to be a valued member of THEIR community.

    • @ChoosingYourUni

      I think that's a pretty good degree to be starting with - you'll learn a lot of general skills that will be useful regardless of what career you end up in.
      Do you have a specific area of interest in communications yet? e.g. marketing, social media, PR etc.
