- In the inaugural episode of Four Play, the theme is Cosmic Horror and the subject is the iconic 1982 film The Thing directed by John Carpenter. Richard Lewis, Thorin, and MonteCristo guide you through the premise of their new show, the four films they will review in the Cosmic Horror genre, and why they made these selections. They provide historical context for the release and reception for The Thing, the reasons they adore the film, the political and Cold War undertones, and the fantastic ambiguous ending.
Four Play selects four iconic films from a theme or genre to meticulously analyze and place in their proper historical context. Hosted by veteran esports commentators Richard Lewis, Duncan "Thorin" Shields, and Christopher "MonteCristo" Mykles, Four Play showcases both legendary Hollywood movies as well as hidden gems outside the mainstream. Be sure to watch along with our hosts each week to get the most of each conversation!

Thanks for watching everyone! Subscriptions, likes, and comments are deeply appreciated. We are looking forward to bringing you more banter and insight about some of our favorite films.
Really enjoying the content, both Nerd Legion and this! Could you please also make a community post on youtube with the 4 upcoming movies? For those of us who kept our sanity intact and don't use social media.
@@simdecog This is a good idea, we'll do it!
Loved this concept. Huge fan of The Thing as well as Annihilation
and Event Horizon. Can't wait for next week.
@@LastFreeNationCulture thanks a bunch
@@LastFreeNationCulture ever consider doing commentary tracks for the movie for patrons?
Monte + Richard + Thorin = certified BANGER
Bangers Only
10/10 show on a 10/10 movie.
Cheers, lads.
Two awarded investigative journalists and an actor, all of them really passionate about culture, discussing films they actually like is the show I've wanted for a very long time
Let's just keep this our secret boys
You found it early! I hope you enjoyed your private sneak preview.
Damn, gj on finding it 😁
Love seeing you expand outside of esports with lfn, any content of this group is always gold.
Praise the algorithm gods
We're launching a sports channel tomorrow. General gaming will be the next project after we flesh out the Culture and Sports channels a bit more!
@@LastFreeNationCulture isnt it better to merge and culture together?
Praise be
Easily my favorite podcast I’ve seen recently. I honestly don’t play league or csgo anymore. I barely watch either but this is just all of the best parts of those podcasts but with a topic I still enjoy
We think there may be quite a few people like you who enjoy our content but maybe don't watch much esports anymore. Hopefully they can find their way to this channel!
@@LastFreeNationCulture I think the pretty nuts like to view ratio is a good indicator of the quality being produced.
Long have we waited for Monte, Thorin and Richard to come together outside of esports. I haven’t watched esports in years, yet the chemistry between you guys always makes any content enjoyable.
Loved this one and look forward to many more
Being able to see Richard more subdued and enjoying himself is so refreshing for someone like me who has only ever seen him on 4 horseman episodes. I love him on those as well, he brings the fire like thorin, but it was a great joy for me to know that he is just a nerd who loves movies and video games like the rest of us. It was nice to see that side of him. Love this series so far guys!
Absolutely loved this episode. The format is really creative, going more and more obscure and I love that it gives a chance for the viewers to do their homework and catch up on the movies being talked about, so we ourselves can form an informed opinion instead of just accepting everything as gospel. Both Thorin and Richard are powerhouses when it comes to movies, they play together like a well-oiled machine. And Richard can go full scholar mode, bringing up the sacret texts buried a hundred years ago, giving truly rare gems of information that most people will miss if they just watched the movie.
I've been enjoying alot of the more modern cinema-critics like the EFAP-crew with Mauler, RedLetterMedia, Drinkers' Bar with the Critical Drinker, and some of their crossovers with other creators. Your show fits in with a unique angle I haven't seen explored before.
Just like General Grievous, i'll be adding this one to my collection!
I'd actually argue that the practical effects from this movie have aged insanely well considering, especially when many films now even resort to CG bloodsplatter. The fact they got someone without arms to do the stomach arm bite scene adds a level of realism you just can't get with Cgi. Maybe in the future but not yet.
My 3 favorite esports personalities in one podcast, I'm spoiled
That intro though
So excited to see RICH BACK in the regular content. And it’s non esports 👍🏻👍🏻 let’s go
I was just complaining today that I couldn't find anything to watch and this pops up - thank you gentlemen, always great seeing Rich in the mix
As an aspiring actor, this show is going to be a gold mine 🔥
Really loving the LFN Culture stuff. I don’t have as much time to pay attention to esports these days but I love y’all as podcast personalities so it’s great to get general pop culture content from y’all.
honestly the practical effects were great, I never thought for a second that its was aged. Enjoyable all around
Easily my favourite horror movie. So glad my dad put it on for us to watch one random night, looking forward to this series
Had the film spoiled years ago in my WatchMojo phase. Finally decided to watch it when I saw this video being uploaded. I like what I saw but it certainly looks like the type of movie which gets better rewatching. Like Thorin mentioned the first thing that pops in my mind is the soundtrack and how it captures the tone of the movie. Also Kurt Russell rules in thiis one
Ennio Morricone was one of the best composers of his time.
The fact that this movie has aged so well is testament to how good practical effects are better than leaning heavily on CGI
love that you guys mentioned Sunshine (2007) because that is one of my other favorite sci-fi space films but would love your take on how it moves from a cosmic horror to a slasher film in the final acts
A whole hour on monte, thorin and richard breaking down a movie instead of the 5 min they get for discord questions sign me up!
The chap that does all the LFN art goes so hard
this was fantastic, really looking forward to the next eps! Especially that Event Horizon ep lmao
Well, I can watch these 3 talk about anything forever. Don't enjoy horror whatsoever, never seen the thing, still gonna listen to this.
Peter Watts who Richard mentioned wrote the short story from The Thing's perspective wrote a book called Blindsight that is a great example of cosmic horror as well, check it out.
Love that you guys are doing this, that observation that monte came up with about the openning was brilliant I havnt caught that!
Content thats been awaited/in the making for about 10 years now
Why the fuck didn't we do this sooner?
@@LastFreeNationCulture I assume "Unfiltered" ptsd lmao
Lol the computer argument. Monte got Thorin w/ the foreshadowing on that.
As i get more tired of esports, this came out just at the right time. I always enjoyed your general discussions about media, politics and philosophy alot.
What a banger idea for a series. Love it. Keep it up boys.
Really hope this show becomes a staple. Love seeing you guys in this element versus esports
SO HYPED FOR THIS
Every good movie podcast needs that iconic Rich. He is the key to all of this.
Cause he's a funnier character than we've ever had
Thank you guys
Great show - and great editing with the clips inserted!
Been waiting for this for a while now!
Great convo looking forward to seeing more
Really been looking forward to this. Thanks guys!
love this already
I've been looking forward to this so much!
Love the concept and the hosts, thanks for making it happen!
Great first episode love the content, keep up the good work
I've heard 2 of the 4, but The Thing is the perfect start, its so good at what it intended to be
Great show, really looking forward to more!
About the flame throwers: Smaller scale ones can be used to clear ice off of frozen equipment which would be quite common there I'd assume. They'd be much smaller though. Also some outposts in Antarctica were originally military so it might be equipment that was left behind. Either way it's not a particularly plausible scenario for them to have access to them.
Amazing content. Watching the thing now!
Love this!
Getting more Thorin and Richard collaborations is always great
Thanks for this content guys.
Thanks for the great content
Banger!
Love it
Needed to rely on memory in this episode.
Can't wait to watch along with you.
This episode gave me such an amazing amount of prespective about the story in the context of the time it came out in, amazing episode can't wait for the next one!
Great content!!!
Great episode 👍
Have really high hopes for this series. Great concept with a great set of hosts.
Love the trio in any context. Thanks for the content.
Great show can't wait for more
So glad this series is a thing now. Awesome work guys!
Great format, looking forward to watching along!
I'm excited for this to motivate me to watch more movies, love the content!
Glad to see you expanding outside esports. This is great!
This was really great, cant wait for the next one!
Please keep this going
Looking forward to next weeks episode. This one was great aswell 👏
Great! Cant wiat to listen!
Thanks! Had a lot of fun and learned a lot :B
Been watching y’all in some form for about a decade at this point and very glad to get to hear the three of you discuss topics without being weighed down by esports. Cheers to the launch of another must-listen podcast!
great stuff
Going to be binging all this new content
love it lads
What a perfect new pod, great idea, fantasticly done.
I love the idea of you guys analyzing and breaking down great cinema. It's also great seeing you extend outside of esports, especially as I find myself following esports less, yet still find your content appealing.
Great Content!
I've thought for a long time you guys would be perfect for many other topics aside from esports. So happy and excited to see this!
This was fantastic, I am really looking forward to the show next week.
great video:) thanks for addressing one of my favorite movies.
Love this flick so tense
Intro already a banger, lets go super excited for this trio
Loved this one! As well as the intro, I'm so happy to see LFN being able to expand beyond esports
I'm looking forward to this series. The movie and music tangents/viewer questions on all y'alls podcasts over the years were always interesting for me as someone who didn't grow up watching many movies. I've got a weekly movie night with friends now cuz they wanted to fix that, and I've gotten more than a few well regarded suggestions from y'all over the years.
One of my favorite movies of all time, i subscribed the moment i saw you guys used it for this discussion. Loved your thoughts on all of this, i hadnt even thought about it in some ways you guys brought up. Thanks so much! I cant even belive they pulled off everything without CGI its mindblowing
You guys watch movies on a different level. It's great hearing about all the things I missed or never even comprehended. Love the content as usual!
This was great can’t wait for more! Excited to watch and explore new movies.
Amazing content. Really looking forward to this series. Gives me an excuse to go back and watch old favorites, as well as hopefully discover some I missed. Great insights I hadn't even put together after watching this film multiple times already.
I'm so excited this show exists. Great pilot episode.
Ready to learn about cosmic horror!
Glad the three of you have another show together!
Incredible episode. Loved the dynamic with Richard (who I dont always love) digging up the historic background, old reviews etc. Looking forwards to the next installments which I will all have to prepare for as I have not seen any of them.
This was content I never knew I wanted until now.
been really looking forward to these type of content, especially given your expert media literacy, interest in mythology and stories, love that Richard even dug up reviewers quotes to dunk on them and contextualize the reception then dived into the history and background of it.
Looking forward to watching this series
ive honestly always been looking for a show with my favourite personalities in esports talking about non esports stuff that i dont know that much and getting interesting information from everyones points of view. Keep up the Great work LFN!
This is gonna be a great series I can’t wait
Fantastic show , will watch for sure
Love the intro, can't wait to dive in. I'm expecting nothing less than epic.
I enjoyed that so much, thank you for this gem of a podcast
I've been watchig along every week since this episode dropped 4 weeks ago, thoroughly enjoyed carving out time to watch the movie on Sunday night in preparation for your episodes. Realized the least I could do was comment to let you all know + boost the engagement stats! I had never seen The Thing, and was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked watching it. Also a joy to see all 3 of you collaborate on content like this - esports is fun but as many other folks said in the comments, I also don't have as much time to watch nowadays. Keep up the good work guys, thanks!
