TOTAL RECALL: Memory implants, the American fantasy & sci-fi satire - Four Play Ep. 15 (90's Action)

- Total Recall stands apart from our other 90's action films in this Four Play cycle through its cutting satire, intriguing themes on the nature of reality, and genuine intelligence. Paul Verhoeven's 1990 science-fiction banger was frequently misinterpreted upon its release but has aged beautifully in spite of the gratuitous violence and cheesy acting by Arnold Schwarzenegger. The film toys with its main character's reality through his memory implants and leaves interpretation to the audience as to whether the film's plot happened on Mars or in Quaid's head. Total Recall injects gratuitous violence and action as a send-up of American cinema while raising intriguing questions on the manipulations of mass media and authoritarianism.
90's action: Face/Off, Mission: Impossible, Total Recall, Con Air
Four Play selects four iconic films from a theme or genre to meticulously analyze and place in their proper historical context. Hosted by veteran esports commentators Richard Lewis, Duncan "Thorin" Shields, and Christopher "MonteCristo" Mykles, Four Play showcases both legendary Hollywood movies as well as hidden gems outside the mainstream. Be sure to watch along with our hosts each week to get the most of each conversation!

I really hope this series goes on for a long time. It has been such a pleasure hearing you guys talk about movies I've enjoyed, and there are so many more that I'm looking forward to
Glad you’re enjoying it! We certainly like making the show
Totally. +1 to that.
Fourplay immediately became my favorite series on the LFN platform. Really hoping the LoL/Esports offseason makes it so we get back to regularly scheduled programming with the episodes. Instantly click the videos or the podcasts if that is more convenient and get right down to business when they are posted.
This movie was actually amazing and I only watched it thanks to you guys
Four Play has really reached a climax with this episode, hope there's multiple more to come! Thanks guys good episode
Thank you gentlemen for this series. I’ve missed most of the Four Play movies/haven’t watched them in 20+ years so I’m Absolutely loving this homework every week.
Total Recall is a masterpiece and I’m excited to watch Con Air this weekend.
Feel the same way mate, even if i have seen it I watch it again!
really do need to do starship troopers at some point
Just have to add to the choir, with incredible ease you guys give better criticism then all of film youtube. Unbelievable!
Always happy to re-watch Total Recall!
1:19:42 lmaooo!!! Oh man, Thorin.. Got him, hahaha.. :D
I had discounted this as another 'Arnie-action' flick that I was never going to watch when I can re-watch Terminator or Predator. I was really surprised how subtle it is and how it keeps you guessing, the 4k restoration looks great as well.
I saw this movie last year so I thought I'd be prepared for this, but man the alternate/correct interpretation makes me want to watch it again.
This movie was mega. Was expecting it to be Commando in space but it holds up as good sci fi. Great practical effects and foreshadowing. I like Monte's way of thinking that both interpretations can be valid. I would be all in on the "it was all a simulation" had it not been for Sharon Stone's character having such suspicious demeanors in the opening scene. Great acting from her tbh.
This is a great movie. Holds up really well. A true classic. Just awesome stuff.
Now I see that the 90s action art of rich is referring to that old lady robo-mask
i would love to see one of these where they can get the director or writer onto the podcast. the guys and especially richard have such good takes on things that i would love to see what one of the creatives has to say
Fantastic movie. Fantastic discussion. Love you guys, keep at it.
I was never thinking about that third option. Same as red bearded dude, as a kid I was thinking it's just Arnold action movie, good but taken literally. When I grew up my take was that it's all in his head, he is having delusions at Recall, and is lobotomized at the end, that is why the creepy music and the white light. But you might be right- he was some sort of agent, only not like in his fantasy and that implanted memory caused his delusions and eventual lobotomy. Him actually having altered identity would explain his high-status lifestyle and super-hot wife like Sharon for simple construction worker. As you said, at the end it doesn't matter, its intentionally left open to interpretation.
Watched this movie shortly before the lineup for this month was revealed and found it really crazy that most of it was shot in my hometown of Mexico City due to it being cheaper to make there, they barely had to change the subway in the chase scene.
Was waiting for this one, it was great. Can't wait for Con Air now LMAO.
Finished the LA Confidential video and watching this. Love your content so far
Loved the episode
Woo another Four play!
you guys are killing it thanks for the content
opening intro is sick! reminds me of an opening for MTV's Downtown
Great stuff leaving a comment to boost the algo
I fucking love Con Air and I can't wait
The section of Rich bringing up critic reviews from that time are always great.
After like an hour of analyzing the movie deeply it's hilarious hearing a few time capsules that miss every single point previously discussed.
You guys are fantastic
Love it
Been waiting so long for this.
Great episode !
I hadnt seen any of the 4 films for this months before, so im glad to have watched them now and been able to hear the breakdowns and discussions from you guys. Looking forward to the Con Air episode because i enjoyed that film the most haha
Good.
Great episode guys! Keep it up
1:19:47 Thorin is fucking hilarious
10/10 episode
10/10 movie
f@ck esports guys, never stop doing this show!
also i saw Total Recall after 18 years and sure i remembered it as massively violent good action movie with casually dumb acting Arnie (just the way i love him)
I cannot properly word how surprised i was that it's actually so smart and brilliant movie underneath, holy f sh!t good movie
Let’s go LFN ganggggg. Late to the party but I’m here
If you guys ever do a Satire series then one movie to cover could be Baseketball by the creators of South Park. A really good satire of sports, primarily American sports but still holds up over the years.
Thorin during Star Trek conversation reminds me of Jay (from redlettermedia) during Rich and Mike Star Trek conversation.
I would love them to have a Man vs Nature series. The Edge 1997 is my favorite movie for many reasons. I know youre not a jukebox dont attack me please.
Honestly i remembered this movie as pretty bad when i watched it at a younger age, But it's a real layered movie. Arnie actually detracts from the movie in my honest opinion.
This show is so good, love hearing your takes about movies.I really liked the story and concept of this film but Arnolds acting was so atrocious it actually was taking me out of it quite a few times.
Algo comment oh yeah that'll be 1000 bucks plz!
I wanna see these guys discuss Avatar 😂
The remake I think is ok, but it does basically state that he was a secret agent before. I do think what's interesting about it is that it has that life and death reading to it as well. I've also heard it talked about that it's more him fighting out of hell to get to heaven.
Another banger. Anyone kno where I could stream this movie? Currently stuck at work so I can only watch it on one of the major streaming apps
AAaaaaaaaaNiMMME Timmmeeeeee!!!!!!!!!
1:18:55
So the 90 action logo they are currently using make Montecristo look like the villain from Arcane Season 1
Monte calling me out like that isn't cool 😡😡😡
‘Arnold isn’t a real actor’ Thorin clearly hasn’t seen Jingle All the Way
