- A god or a demon? A djinn or a mighty sorcerer? A devil or an evil spirit? Or maybe just the very embodiment of evil? Master Mirror, Gaunter O’Dimm - whom exactly are we talking about? Since the release of the Hearts of Stone DLC for The Witcher III: Wild Hunt game, the debate about the true essence of the Man of Glass has not subsided for a single moment. There were absolutely different theories in the fan community, cause CD Projekt Red was able to come up with a truly unique character - one of the best antagonists in the history of video games. Worthy Opponent for the Witcher Geralt of Rivia.

Gaunter O’Dimm. Who is he?
A devil creature.
Probably dandelion
Master mirror, the devil himself 👿
The old man from Scene 24?
@@TristanMundell "A" devil. A creature from the plane of hell.
I like how after Geralt beats him and he's disappearing into the void, he calmly just talks shit and essentially is saying "whatever, you'ra a pussy and you don't really win."
the whole spoon in the eye scene is still unsettling to this day, that was my oh shit moment in the witcher 3
Isn’t it funny when gaunter dissappears the people near say like what the devil or smth like that
yeah that's blasphemy, since he's a devil.
This is one character I hope never gets fully explained by cdpr his mystery is part of why he's so interesting its like in any good horror story, the best ones never fully explain the entities.
Too rich of a character. I agree... Just more antics please
The whole twisted deals on first impressions made me really think of the whole deals with demons and deals with the devil stories.
I just finished the expansion, this was so well timed
Sounds like Master Mirror works again.
If you think Olgierd was evil before summoning Gaunter. You clearly missed important parts of the story.
Olgierd was a completely different person. Even Geralt acknowledges it, when walking past a portrait of him made by iris.
Gaunter doesn’t wait for people to summon him. Gaunter pushes himself into their lives.
He's absolutely the devil. He makes deals for souls, he has serpent eyes in the last cutscene, he loves to meddle in human affairs to the detriment of everyone but him, and he espouses morals of freedom and hedonism.
Ochams razor, whatever explanation requires the fewedt assumptions is probably correct.
You also meet him at a crossroad at night. Very devil sounding
@@revan5293 yeah, they clearly gave him flavor from other cultures to add a bit of obscurity, but the core is undeniably the devil.
Such an unsettling character. Always felt uneasy around him. Even though I couldn’t stand Olgeird I would always save him because I couldn’t side with Gaunter
Me to man. Watching Olgeird ruin his marriage and life just for money and status is one of those life lessons I am so glad I learned early. I tried selling my soul to the devil for a woman and so glad it didn’t work like I had wanted. Lol
One theme of Gaunter O’Dimm that I extremely like is how he only targets bad people or people who peak around too much. Olgierd is the leader of a band of bandits who murdered and destroyed villages, Marlene refused to feed the beggar-disguised Gaunter despite tradition demands her so, Professor Shakelock was too close to finding out Gaunter O’Dimm’s identity,… he doesn’t just randomly targets innocent individuals. Even in Geralt’s case, he only offered to help Geralt with a price and even gave Geralt a tip after the deed.
Actually Olgierd isn’t the monster he’s often made out to be. If you really look into it, Geralt doesn’t even meet the real Olgierd until after Hearts of Stone. Gaunter O’Dimm is able to phrase things to make himself seem the victim while really he twists his words to make it seem like he’s playing fair. Take the old man in Oxenfurt, for just doing research into him O’Dimm imprisoned him in a “Protective Circle” which really meant death should he leave it. What’s worse is the old man’s journal showed what O’Dimm did to him before his death. He was so into his own research that his life passed him by and he lived with regrets. O’Dimm then gave him dreams of the family and daughter he never had and the dreams were so real that the old man would live just for the sweet release of sleep. This lasted for months and turned into nightmares, especially when the daughter died in his arms(brutally). O’Dimm is known as man different names but only one was consistent throughout years and years of documented cases: Evil incarnate.
You can count the number of people gaunter has played with with your fingers. And yet, you couldn’t say he only targets bad people because shakeslock doesn’t fit into that category so you created a totally new category ‘people who peak too much’.
The entire point of the expansion is that GoD is inherently evil, the incarnate, the embodiment of it.
Alex Norton is far too good an actor to have played only a cameo role for what would have been a forgettable character, and it's largely his performance that makes Gaunter O'Dimm such a great character. He absolutely nails the polite condescension, and brings a unique charisma to him. As for the character though, I hope we are never given a conclusive answer because the mystery is as much a part of the character as anything else. Give us a definitive answer as to who he is and you diminish the character.
His initials are GOD
guess what god backwards reads as?
Master Mirror tends to reflect the evil of a person or lack of in the deals he makes. I do take umbrage though to his comparison to Fring, the Man of Glass has a healthy sense of humor, far more than Gus.
As for the Spotted Wright, she violated the Toussantian right of hospitality, paid the price, and that later gave Geralt a reagent from an otherwise extinct creature that without would have seriously complicated Geralt's journey and life in many ways. Master Mirror directs Geralt to the garrison in White Orchard to find Yen, saves Geralt on the ship, filicates the supply of a rare reagent a century in advance to it being needed, can help Geralt to find Ciri, and if asked at the right time will tell Geralt how to make sure Ciri survives.
Is Master Mirror evil? Yes, at least some of the time or perhaps mischievous or something akin to. Evil incarnate? In my opinion no or why would he have helped stop The White Frost and been generally beneficial to Geralt over all? Just some food for thought.
Well made video. No nonsense bullshit to make the vid longer, he gave the information right away. You gained a new subscriber ❤
I think he's some sort of eldritch being like Nyarlathotep. His motivations and nature are simply beyond understanding and his sense of morality is very different from ours. He's not as much truly evil as he is just curious and bored. There are a couple videos by a channel called "Proper Bird" which I think outline my thoughts almost perfectly.
Also yes I'd love a huge Master Mirror video!
I subbed some time ago and really liked your stuff but this video is my favourite so far.
Very good research and structure. Keep going and thanks, greetings from Germany.
Great video. I would like to add that Twardowski's mirror can be seen in a church in Węgrów in Poland. It is specially suspended high so that you can not look through it 😊.
Olgierd's story is relatable. Anyone who truly loves would sacrifice everything for love, even make a pact with the devil. It's wrong, but it's human.
But you wouldn’t give up your balls, that’s not true love
...actually...God can create a parrellel universe in which he can create a stone to heavy for him to lift while also having a universe inwhich there is no stone to heavy for him to lift. This paradox was presented before multiple universe theories. (I'm not religious, this is just my thoughts on the paradox).(Also, great video, one of my favorite villains and you did him justice).
The kids singing the song mannnn. One of the coolest characters. me personally I think he’s the devil. This whole thing just reminds me of making a deal with the devil at like a crossroad somewhere and you know.
So many things I like in his character design like the fact that just like with the Unseen Elder all our gear, Witcher tricks and mastery of swordfighting are useless.
Or the fact that we can simply allow him to proceed and even get a reward for it, all fair and square.
The words he speaks when defeated and the fact these are actual languages and not a gibberish.
The fact that he is most likely the devil - but we never know for sure.
And so much more.
I hope we will see Gaunter again in Witcher 4.
I don't want to know. O'Dimm warned us all, that's one wish we shouldn't try to fulfill. Never.
1:12 oh thats a tree waving in the wind.😮
I thought ODimm had tentacles coming out of him. Like "what fckn edition is this!?"😅😂
Not just a devil but The Devil.
Edit: Would watch a multiple hour long about Mr O'Dimm.
correction, not "the" devil but "a" devil. A creature from hell among others.
@@Bene_Singularis No I personally think he is The Devil of the Witcher universe.
@@Nathan_Coley This idea has no ground though. In that universe there's no "one god" or "one devil". There is a multiverse with multiple planes of existence though. "Master Mirror" is a extraplanar creature, the most deeply-ingrained monster in the world that Geralt has ever faced, but still just a creature, even if a powerful one.
@@Bene_Singularis I'm not trying to convince anyone, it's just how I personally feel about Gaunter.
@@Nathan_ColeyGaunter's gwent card literally confirmed he's a higher demon. There's no god nor devil in The Witcher universe. Sorry, matey!
Love the video, and of course we would not love but crave that hour long video about him.
I personally think that he actually is the god of the universe, although most definitely not good. The way he is doing things although, for me, seem like he is bored by everything, hence why he limits himself with the contracts etc.
Nice. New Old Witcher to wrap up my Saturday after work.
Merci for the content
If I ever figure out Redkit, I'ma reach out for you to voice one of my NPC's :)))
really hope they expand on gaunter o dim in the next games
I think he's a fallen angel.
Ie part of some eldritch/divine race that fell from grace or came to this world on his own accord.
There's probably others like him that we don't see.
Actually the gin you speak of are called gene (like in Aladdin), gin are different myths all together. More similar to the succubus creatures in the game (half man half goat, said to remain young till death yet not immortal)
How about breakings 4th wall ??
I really hope he comes back in the Witcher 4
he says "you think you have defeated me? no you are mistaken" in georgian
Am I the only one who thinks O Dimm looks like Jake Gyllenhall
Gunther ‘o’ Dimm if you make an acronym out of the first letters of his name, you’ll get your answer.
That's just to throw viewers off. Think about it, Lucifer wants to be God and treated as such even though he is not God. To mortals yes Guanter is God, he wants us to seem him as such because it's amusing to him but he isn't God. In the religious world many people believe that the many deities of different religions are themselves fallen angels just pretending to be gods due to us mortals being easily impressed by their feats of the super natural but they are not God so there are limits to what they can do, just as Gaunter has pointed out about himself. If Guanter was truly God he could end bring someone to the moon by just creating a mini moon under their feet however the devil (Satan, lucifer, which ever you prefer) is still just an angel therefore him being the devil or something ease works with jinns belasically being that. What the djinns we have come to know are just lesser djinns while Guanter I'd a true Djinn.
Take him controlling time, someone theorized that if you listen to what he said he had to teach himself to manipulate time but he never said he can actually control time. The theory goes that he may be able to speed up peoples movement through time but not actually control time itself. Basically like how the flash operates with the ability to choose who is also affected by it afterall which would be the easier feat: learning how to freeze time in the whole universe or just making you and another individual move faster than time effectively to the point your are out running time. For arguments sake let's say he actually stop time, how do we know there isn't a range to it where only a certain radius can actually be effected? Obviously you can retort how do we know there is one but we do know he states there are things that he cannot do meaning things outside his power but no true God would say that unless said God is a lesser or part of a pantheon of other gods.
We have to also consider how easy it is to say he is God. Geralt is not stupid, a simple acronym like that would have been something he would have pieced together quickly and would have just straight up asked which likely would have got amusement from Gaunter and he would have told yes in a round about way but that would so easy destroy the impact of the character for the answer to be so simple.
Seeing how the Witcher universe is he could be a god albeit a dark one
Hello,
Is there a nice book that covers this stuff that you would recomend. I like these stories a lot.
Sadly not. Gaunter O’Dimm is only in the games
Started pretty good, but lost me with superficial judgment of Olgierd. Decent effort though
I don't know what to think of Gaunter O'Dimm. I suppose I don't find him terribly unnerving. He might not be entirely evil. After countless lifetimes and countless encounters, putting a spoon into someone's brain for being irritating might not be such a big deal to a person.
He’s the Witcher version of God a mix of good and evil
One thing about inquisition stick to the witcher lore not history since inquisition inveneted legal standards just because of cases you mentioned so for example if someone were to accuse someone else of witchcraft they would have to provide 2 legitimate witnesses to testiylfy also there were standards what evidence could be included
A loki variant
Gaunter is supposed to look like Gus Fringe? 🤔
I dont see it.
More vids like this plz lol
Lucifer
Gaunter looks middle eastern
Yep
They are painting a picture here even in Witcher 3 ...
do it
The original G-O-D
ok stop right there, denouncing someone heretic didn't get them burned at the stake in just a few hours. Only half of the documented cases ended in a buring.
He's the clone of the real god actually he's god
no he's a devil creature. His name is a blasphemy.
