The spoon in the eye scene alongside him threatening to take Olgierd's brother Vlodimir "with him" shows us that if he chooses to he doesn't have to abide by any rules whatsoever, and that he only does so because HE imposes them on himself, and why does he do it? He himself tells us in the scene with the gingerbread. Because then the "gingerbread" is missing a crucial ingredient for him. If he just takes souls (which he absolutely could) he gets no satisfaction from it. The games he plays with his victims and in turn the time it takes him to win them is what gives him joy from taking souls. But he also makes it possible for him to be beaten otherwise the game isn't fair, and to him that would make the souls not worth taking as well. It's so subtle in the writing I don't think I ever saw something like this ever not just in video games but in all the books and shows and movies I consumed in my life, CDPR writers deserve to lauded as the best out there not just in video games but of all storytelling mediums.
Also just as an anecdote in original myths especially the original Aladdin Djinns actually had unlimited wishes, the 3 wishes limit thing was popularised by Western adaptations probably "The Thief of Bagdad" and completely cemented by Disney. The only "older" legend that has 3 wishes is that of the golden fish and the fisherman but that's because the fish is caught by the fisherman 3 times offering any wish in return for its freedom. In The Last Wish Geralt catching the Djinn's seal while fishing is a throwback to that tale as well.

Vlodimir was not part of the pact he was a victim of it sacrificed by Olgierd. but his death was "natural" his soul was not taken he never agreed to give it up but Gaunter still threatens to do it which means he is capable of doing it. Also no I HIGHLY doubt Gaunter can only torture his ghost because Olgierd sacrificed the scene was entirely a demonstration of the extent of his power showing he is able to torture the dead. Why didn't he go after Ciri, Yennefer, or Eredin and take advantage of their desparation, make a deal with any of them-Ciri fleeing the wild hunt, renouncing her gift, or Yennefer trying to find Ciri like Eredin? Those would be great opportunities for him, and I don't see any reason why he wouldn't choose to do so unless he does have limitations. Moreover, having the soul of someone with the elder blood or child of prophecy would be a great achievement for his game, I reckon.

@@NexFriday1345 no problem about the English it's not my first language either.
The thing CDPR was going with when it comes to Gaunter O'Dimm is that he also has lovecraftian influences meaning we do not know or understand his motives maybe it's even impossible for us to understand them. What it appears to be is that Gaunter also "mirrors" his attitude depending on who he talks to, and people he deems as evil are the ones he wants their souls and punish them the most he doesn't care who they are but only WHAT they are (evil in his eyes or not), notice how he always talks very kindly to Geralt vs how he talks to and about Olgierd calling him a "monster in human flesh" and Olgierd is a bad dude let's not pretend. though Gaunter has no qualms about taking the lives of people who are not necessarily like that when he kills the old man with the spoon and also has no problem taking Geralt's soul but it's only after Geralt asks him to make a deal. We also see this in Blood and Wine where Gaunter Marlene to become a Wight because he deemed her a bad person we see he chooses to punish people that he thinks are evil. We know Gaunter is capable of knowing the future and altering events like the world is his toy he knew Geralt would find Ciri and stop the Wild Hunt and the White Frost. As I said we can't assume his motive as a being that is essentially a god (again Lovecraftian influence) but we can maybe say that he chose to not get involved because he knew how things would go down, AND that Yen and Ciri are not evil so he doesn't seek to punish them. We know next to nothing about him but what we can be sure about is that the only limits he has are self imposed because he chooses to do it. Why we don't know and probably never know

  • @gaunterodimm3606

Master Mirror tends to reflect the evil of a person or lack of in the deals he makes. I do take umbrage though to his comparison to Fring, the Man of Glass has a healthy sense of humor, far more than Gus.
As for the Spotted Wright, she violated the Toussantian right of hospitality, paid the price, and that later gave Geralt a reagent from an otherwise extinct creature that without would have seriously complicated Geralt's journey and life in many ways. Master Mirror directs Geralt to the garrison in White Orchard to find Yen, saves Geralt on the ship, filicates the supply of a rare reagent a century in advance to it being needed, can help Geralt to find Ciri, and if asked at the right time will tell Geralt how to make sure Ciri survives.
Is Master Mirror evil? Yes, at least some of the time or perhaps mischievous or something akin to. Evil incarnate? In my opinion no or why would he have helped stop The White Frost and been generally beneficial to Geralt over all? Just some food for thought.

Alex Norton is far too good an actor to have played only a cameo role for what would have been a forgettable character, and it's largely his performance that makes Gaunter O'Dimm such a great character. He absolutely nails the polite condescension, and brings a unique charisma to him. As for the character though, I hope we are never given a conclusive answer because the mystery is as much a part of the character as anything else. Give us a definitive answer as to who he is and you diminish the character.

One theme of Gaunter O’Dimm that I extremely like is how he only targets bad people or people who peak around too much. Olgierd is the leader of a band of bandits who murdered and destroyed villages, Marlene refused to feed the beggar-disguised Gaunter despite tradition demands her so, Professor Shakelock was too close to finding out Gaunter O’Dimm’s identity,… he doesn’t just randomly targets innocent individuals. Even in Geralt’s case, he only offered to help Geralt with a price and even gave Geralt a tip after the deed.

    • @DiddyCanFly
      @DiddyCanFly 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

Actually Olgierd isn’t the monster he’s often made out to be. If you really look into it, Geralt doesn’t even meet the real Olgierd until after Hearts of Stone. Gaunter O’Dimm is able to phrase things to make himself seem the victim while really he twists his words to make it seem like he’s playing fair. Take the old man in Oxenfurt, for just doing research into him O’Dimm imprisoned him in a “Protective Circle” which really meant death should he leave it. What’s worse is the old man’s journal showed what O’Dimm did to him before his death. He was so into his own research that his life passed him by and he lived with regrets. O’Dimm then gave him dreams of the family and daughter he never had and the dreams were so real that the old man would live just for the sweet release of sleep. This lasted for months and turned into nightmares, especially when the daughter died in his arms(brutally). O’Dimm is known as man different names but only one was consistent throughout years and years of documented cases: Evil incarnate.

    • @Harishiv18

You can count the number of people gaunter has played with with your fingers. And yet, you couldn’t say he only targets bad people because shakeslock doesn’t fit into that category so you created a totally new category ‘people who peak too much’.
The entire point of the expansion is that GoD is inherently evil, the incarnate, the embodiment of it.

Or the fact that we can simply allow him to proceed and even get a reward for it, all fair and square.

I believe he is the Devil of the Witcher universe, but he is able to walk the world in physical form, existing on both the physical and metaphysical. He wants souls, but no one knows why he explicitly wants souls. He could possibly even be a Dark Lord character akin to Morgoth and Sauron in Tolkien’s Legendarium, like Sauron does with taking on the form of Annatar, Gaunter takes on the form of an unassuming mirror merchant or vagrant. Like Morgoth he disappears into the void upon defeat, but unlike Morgoth who was physically banished to the void, Gaunter is utterly destroyed by the light, burning into the void. I think it’s simple that he is the Devil, especially with his personality, he’s incredibly prideful and flaunts his power, but he doesn’t want his true nature revealed, which makes me believe he could be a Dark Lord type figure, gathering strength through the souls he takes, but also like Demons in Abrahamic faiths, his true name may give people power over him, and he can be banished. I don’t recall Djinn desiring souls however.

The parallel with historical witch trial is wrong, the inquisition burned surprisingly few people, usually on substantiated charges of poisoning and pagan rituals associated with devil worship ( anything non christian was considered devil worship, pagan gods were considered superior demons ) barely a hundred women were burned. In turn hundred did get tortured to abjure their pagan faith and cease their alchemist practices. Most of the inquisition works was about chastising deviant pratices amongs the priesthood itself. Most witchcraft accusation were rejected by local priests has ill-motivated. Jalousy, vengeance, and greed were the main motives. It was also a common pratice to accuse criminals of un christian pratices at a tribunal, warranting their execution, but it was done to explain their ill behavior and give an excuse to execute them. Joan of Arc was famous because its the most popular, unfair and rare instance of witch burning of history. 🔥

@@Nathan_Coley This idea has no ground though. In that universe there's no "one god" or "one devil". There is a multiverse with multiple planes of existence though. "Master Mirror" is a extraplanar creature, the most deeply-ingrained monster in the world that Geralt has ever faced, but still just a creature, even if a powerful one.

That's just to throw viewers off. Think about it, Lucifer wants to be God and treated as such even though he is not God. To mortals yes Guanter is God, he wants us to seem him as such because it's amusing to him but he isn't God. In the religious world many people believe that the many deities of different religions are themselves fallen angels just pretending to be gods due to us mortals being easily impressed by their feats of the super natural but they are not God so there are limits to what they can do, just as Gaunter has pointed out about himself. If Guanter was truly God he could end bring someone to the moon by just creating a mini moon under their feet however the devil (Satan, lucifer, which ever you prefer) is still just an angel therefore him being the devil or something ease works with jinns belasically being that. What the djinns we have come to know are just lesser djinns while Guanter I'd a true Djinn.
Take him controlling time, someone theorized that if you listen to what he said he had to teach himself to manipulate time but he never said he can actually control time. The theory goes that he may be able to speed up peoples movement through time but not actually control time itself. Basically like how the flash operates with the ability to choose who is also affected by it afterall which would be the easier feat: learning how to freeze time in the whole universe or just making you and another individual move faster than time effectively to the point your are out running time. For arguments sake let's say he actually stop time, how do we know there isn't a range to it where only a certain radius can actually be effected? Obviously you can retort how do we know there is one but we do know he states there are things that he cannot do meaning things outside his power but no true God would say that unless said God is a lesser or part of a pantheon of other gods.
We have to also consider how easy it is to say he is God. Geralt is not stupid, a simple acronym like that would have been something he would have pieced together quickly and would have just straight up asked which likely would have got amusement from Gaunter and he would have told yes in a round about way but that would so easy destroy the impact of the character for the answer to be so simple.

Ah, he's holding an apple. Probably a reference to the Fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil from Genesis 3. That would seem to connect him with Satan/the Devil, but given the hostility this game seems to have against God and Christianity, I wouldn't be surprised if they are trying to imply that God and the Devil are the same entity. Perhaps that is why they made his "initials" G O D.
(On a separate note, that old "Can God create a rock so heavy that he can't lift it" thing is bad philosophy. A proper understanding of God's omnipotence is that God cannot do anything that is logically impossible or that would detract from his nature or character. For example, God cannot cease to exist. In other words, God cannot do anything that would make him less perfect, and that needs to be understood when considering rock creating/lifting. More could be said.)

If that is true, then human beings cannot know anything about God, and you would have just violated your own maxim. However, God is able to make himself known to people through revelation, and he has said that there are some things he cannot do. For example, God has indicated through Scripture that he cannot lie or go against his own nature (Hebrews 6:18, 2 Timothy 2:13). These limitations, however, do not detract from his greatness, but they contribute to it.
