Witcher. Bestiary. Morkvarg
Curses. Terrible and unstoppable. Turning people's lives into a nightmare. The witcher's world is full of them. Anyone who has the power or the appropriate artifact can condemn his enemy to eternal torment... Remember the story of Marlena de Trustamara, the Curse of the Black Sun, or the death curse of Sabrina Glevissig. They all ended with broken human destinies. But that's not what we're talking about today. In our next issue of the bestiary, we will tell you about a man who perhaps even deserved the terrible torment to which he was doomed. We'll tell you about the monster this man turned into. And about where the scriptwriters from CD Projekt Red took ideas for his image.
Of course, in world mythology there is absolutely no character called Morkvarg with the same name and the same, so to speak, problems. The image of Morkvarg is highly composite and contains references to several of our ancestors’ tales at once. That's why, by the way, he's so interesting...

    No offence but I'd sooner watch videos about monsters we haven't seen in the games, things like Draconturtles or Crab Spiders. And Morkvarg is the worst encounter in TW3, I can't understand a bloody word he says. The actor well over did the snarling compared to other Werewolf actors in the game.

    Sapkowski didn't "make the School of the Viper canon" and he'll never do it. Preston Holt is just an old witcher from Kaer Morhen wearing a viper-shaped medallion. A point that's important to understand is that the "Witcher schools", whether that of "the Wolf", "the Cat", "the Griffin" or "the Viper", are an invention of CDPR for the lore of the games. There is no mention of any "School of the Wolf" and Geralt doesn't wear a wolf medallion because it's the emblem of Kaer Morhen, no, Geralt was given a wolf medallion as he very well could have receive a wolverine or any other animal medallion (according to Sapkowski's own words). Moreover, if you read the books, you will notice that at no time are the medallions of the other witchers of Kaer Morhen (Vesemir, Eskel, Lambert or Cohen) described. The only recurrence in terms of witcher medallions in the books concerns "the Cats" but the latter are described more as a guild of hitmen than as proper monster hunters, which, unsurprisingly, makes them very unpopular, including with other witchers... I wouldn't be surprised if the bad reputation of witchers (as a whole) was actually their doing. Although it's never named "School of the Cat", they do have their own citadel : "Beann Grudd Castle". I will add to conclude that not only does the "School of the Griffin" not exist in the books but the only medallion potentially representing a griffin could in fact just as easily represent an eagle, according to the passage in the books during which the latter is mentioned.

    Heck even if the setting didn’t have all the monsters and magic ied not pick this setting to live in. Heck even if I was put into the setting as a character I created that is literally the most powerful thing in any setting and has to apply limiters to their power to not exceed the power of the most powerful entity in that setting or it would start to erode the reality around them until the whole setting is erased (aka their really powerful) ied not opt to live in the setting on the Witcher, the humans are horrid the food is 90% ghastly and oh gods that smell (it makes you wonder how a Witcher can stand having that smell around them considering their improved sense of smell) I’ve smelled stale cow pee (it was when I was working at a theme park I also sadly got to smell wolf pee to as well as a few other smells they were testing for the Halloween attraction) and nope I wouldn’t live in a village that smells of that thank you very much.

    Imagine casting a white woman as mulan or Pocahontas 😂 or a white male as Martin Luther king the backlash but if a white character whose appearance is well described in a book it’s the most normal thing XD this whole dilemma and bashing against white is bullshit. Any culture can and should be proud of it’s existence! Changing character’s appearance based on a percentage of represented races then I quit watching whatever they throw at us :) I don’t need a black mermaid arielle nor a Latino snowwhite whose features where hair as black as ebonywood, lips as red as blood, skin as pale as the snow … also the giving woman characters the most bullshit attributes like rey from Star Wars haha 😂 they see people don’t fancy it, yet every leading role is following this bullshit haha. I don’t know about you guys but I miss the 90s movies, early 2000s heck even the classy 60s to 80s movies which I watched over the years have all far more love, depth and a better plot with better written characters als 99% of the bullshit movies or series we get nowadays in this stupid woke eara. Even cartoons nowadays are horrendous. Compare the stuff we got in the early 2000s with the stuff we get today and you cry. Kids back then like me had the best cartoons, great art styles not this generic shit… it’s so sad 😢 wokeness kills everything there is to enjoy. Why male characters like the kings in the Netflix adaptation must be so over the top disgusting? Why does holdo in Star Wars exist and is celebrated by some?

    Grumpy old man? Guys, I'd look at you, if your creation had to vie for attention with a fan fiction. Most people, including me, were introduced to the series through games simply because of widespread popularity of the medium. The author is mad, because games are not even objectively better. but are much easier to digest due to the nature of the medium. That is a blow which is hard to recover from, as you are faced not even with your own weakness, but with the objective reality of games being a more efficient means of entertaining. Basically, an invader comes to your marshy kingdom and usurps half of it, but at the same time can not dethrone you, so you are stuck in this peculiar situation

    Preston is not from school of viper. He simply has medalion with viper. He came from school of wolves. In some interview Sapkowski said that medalion doesn’t mean which school does a Witcher came from and that maybe he will write about it someday. Or maybe he will not. As he used to say.

    • @benji285
      @benji285 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      << He came from school of wolves >> No he didn't, in the books, there's no such things as the "School of the Wolf" (nor any other animals), Preston Holt is from "Kaer Morhen" and that's it, the wolf is not the emblem of Kaer Morhen, as you mentioned earlier, Geralt's medallion represented a wolf as it could have represented a completely different animal, Sapkowski said it himself during an interview for "Polityka" (a Polish weekly newspaper), moreover, only Geralt's medallion is described in the books, so Vesemir, Eskel and Lambert more than likely have other animals on their medallions themselves. So there's no "School of the Viper" nor "School of the Griffin" either, only the witcher fortresses of Mirabel and Beann Grudd. However, in the context of the latter, it's a little special, since it was the haunt of witchers wearing specifically cat medallions and who are themselves special cases, since in the books, they are described more as "genetically modified hitmen" than as proper monster hunters.

    My theory about the age thing is that when CDPR was making the witcher games, they were under the same impression as most fans; that Geralt was much older (like late nineties or some age that would draw attention to the witchers living much longer lifespans than humans) and so they made Geralt look middle aged in response. If they knew that Geralt was in his early sixties by the third game, I'd bet they would have made him look like he was in his twenties.

      It makes more sense for the previous books as well, him being 65-ish in the first two and then around 80 when Ciri's story takes place. That's still young for a witcher but not a full-on newbie

  • @FC-ho9hw
    @FC-ho9hw 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I don't have any issue playing as the Witcher 3 and even a little older Ciri, but she shouldn't be a witcher. I read all books and played all games multiple times (I'm from Czech Republic, so we have the books since the 90's). So not only it absolutely breaks the lore, but it also doesn't make any sense, because women are just not physically as strong as even the weakest men. The bone structure, muscle mass, endurance, etc... Women can be absolutely stronger mentally and overcome the pain of the Witcher mutations mentally, but absolutely not physically. Certainly not their bones... At this point I'm only curious how's CDPR gonna try to bs their way out of it, so I'll be like "okay, that makes sense." Ciri is no ordinary human, but she's absolutely still only a human female physically and can be ended in combat if she's not careful, as anybody. Apart from her genetics, she's very quick and agile, but just not stronger fighter than Geralt or whatever. She's good and much better than most, but not as good as Geralt or any real witcher... She can hunt monsters or whatever as she was, she just shouldn't be a full on witcher, because with her powers alone, she's more powerful than any of them... Why would Ciri even wanted to be a witcher? Even from the game itself we already know she's skilled and powerful enough (actually much more powerful) to be a witcher by TRADE if she really wanted to (in the Witcher ending we know she already did without any need for the Witcher mutations)... This is pretty much my only real issue. Then there are some of the story implications with Geralt or Yen, because which parent would be okay with this knowing the risks and so on... Geralt and other kids simply didn't have any choice, but Ciri would do this willingly just for the fun of it, see what happens? Like what the actual f?! Not to mention that Vesemir, and more importantly, her parents Geralt and Yen wouldn't be okay for their child to gamble with her life, unless it's her last resort for her survival. l'm still gonna buy and play it (probably many times), because the whole Witcher franchise is my personal favourite. My number 1, actually. I just really don't like HUGE retcons, like this one. How they done it so far feels to me like they wanted to have Ciri as the actual Witcher only for the sake of it and f the lore and actually making any logical sense even character and personality-wise... I'm sure they'll explain it somehow, I just don't feel I'm gonna like it though. An explanation doesn't automatically mean it's gonna be a good one... The Elder Blood explanation is just lazy af. Ciri as the actual Witcher just feels really forced to me. You still have many things against it IF you actually love the lore and know these characters and their personality pretty well (across 2 decades in my case), etc. The game and gameplay is gonna be great, I'm sure. I'm just more about the story and lore kinda guy... CDPR already changed some stuff, but not as drastically as this and they still followed the books much more than not. This has to have some really great explanation for me to be okay with it. Again. The Witcher mutations are actually the definition of suffering, with a minimal chance to actually live through it at the best of times... Only the strongest boys survived and literally no girl ever. And the reason for that is that women and men ARE different, with entirely different bone structure, muscle mass, endurance, etc. Women can be absolutely stronger than men mentally (can even be more agile and faster), but not physically. I'm very concerned, because I actually like Ciri as a character and would have the same issue if Geralt suddenly turned up as a mage or whatever... There's literally no need for her to mutate herself... You can't just change your genetics even with mutations. Her Elder Blood is just that. It's genetics. The Witcher mutations will change your body (if you actually survive), but not your genes, your DNA... She just won't lose her powers like that, because it's in her bloodline. You also have to keep in mind that when Sapkowski wrote these books, he still tried to keep this world somewhat realistic with how things might actually work. I just read some of these explanations and sometimes it's just really reaching to me... Grasping at straws. We will just have to see with what they'll come up with. CDPR, obviously... I'm still curious, but obviously a little worried and it's okay to criticize something you don't like and I explained in much detail WHY.
