We go through everything and try to get every detail we possibly can and maybe even see who was inspired by the ballot, specifically in the upper echelon of the ballot results. Hello fellow duds!! Welcome to a series that I have been wanting to do even before I made my channel, Smash Talk!! This series is basically a mixture of everything Smash Bros, whether it be trailer reactions, discussions, talking supposed leaks and much, much more split into many mini series!! I hope you guys enjoy cause I really want to try and discuss all aspects of the Smash Series!!

Corrin was just to promote Fire Emblem Fates. Sakurai even stated he initially didn't want to add Corrin because he felt there was too many Fire Emblem characters, but the development team convinced him Corrin could be unique.
Dammit man I told you to stop watching if you weren't open to me speculating XD nah I'm kidding but if you didn't notice, it was just me throwing theories at the board and seeing what sticks. I know he said that, but I'm just saying that it could be another factor, that's all.
@@BlazinBaconYT FE like most RPGs are meant appeal to Japan and Nintendo is a Japanese company, they have to take advantage of it. You're probably wondering they not just RPG's from Third party company's??? The problem is that Lloyd from Tales of Symphonia and Monster Hunter are mii sword fighters, so that may not be an option????
It called compromising. It's Nintendo saying( If we can't get the coolest RPG characters outside of Hero and Sephiroth, we might as well give them something)??? Byleth and Corrin are the defiantly something.
Fates was well received in Japan.
@orangeslash1667 Makes sense. It's funny cause that was a point I brought up in another vod I made about people hating Pyra and Mythra and said that the reason Byleth was in Ultimate was because of his popularity in Japan. Should've thought about that too

See, I do believe that Bayonetta was definitely an extremely popular vote on the original ballot. News that Bayonetta 2 wasn't just coming out, but was being published exclusively by Nintendo and wouldn't have existed if it weren't for Nintendo paying the bills, was a pretty enormous deal at the time. The fact that the game was _really good_ only helped her popularity among Nintendo fans surge. Considering she was being treated as an honorary first-party character just a few months before the Ballot opened...yeah, I have no doubt that a lot of people were on that train. Hell, I know a lot of people who voted for her for that exact reason. She was fresh on a _lot_ of people's minds at the time.
At the same time...I _also_ believe that Nintendo and Sora Ltd. already had plans to include her on the roster anyway. Hell, all of her assets are basically copied and pasted from Bayo 2. It felt like a no-brainer and I bet they just used the level of popularity she had on the Ballot to justify her inclusion.
Because I _ALSO_ 100% believe that the Ballot was created during pre-production of Ultimate to use as reference for that game, not 4. But they had to _say_ it was for 4 as to not show their hand for Nintendo's next hardware generation.
A lie, yes, but a justifiable one imo.
Considering Smash only exists because of a certain event Sakurai experienced whilst playing King of Fighters, getting Terry in would very much just be because of Sakurai's personal preference, and not because of the ballot.
All I'm gonna say is that I've gotten extremely lucky with the characters that I've wanted for smash bros, who include but are not limited to: Duck Hunt, Ryu, Cloud, Simon, Richter (yes I wanted him as an alt skin), Ridley, K Rool, Ken (wanted him as an alt skin for Ryu as well), Snake and all the other boys to return, Banjo, Sora, and Steve. I got spoiled by Sakurai lol.

I never expected Steve to make it into Smash. He was my impossible dream character, so his reveal was extra hype for me.
I couldn't believe when I saw him for the first time. Good times, good times.
Not gonna lie, this is the perfect video on the topic. It goes into a ton of detail and even gives theories as to why certain characters made it in.
Personally, I think bayo placing #1 and cloud getting a third of the votes were both bs given they don't just put character files in the game. They'd have to have been planned well before that meaning it's likely they knew they were gonna put cloud and bayo into the game before the ballot was even announced.
I really appreciate that my dude. Worked hard on researching on the topic and yea, honestly, the whole Bayonetta in 2 weeks thing is so confusing to me because yea your right, it is weird that they would just put character files so soon into the ballot, but I don't know I just chalk it up to them already planning to make use of the ballot when Ultimate came out 😅
@@BlazinBaconYT It could be as simple as a coincidence, originally planning to put Bayo in, and to their surprise she also ended up being top rank in European polls, just a massive stroke of a luck

@@ArceusDX I think the only reason Bayo got in is because Nintendo has a very good relationship with both Platinum Games and Sega.
Man, I just wish more people voted for Shantae. WayForward was even pushing it themselves, and it would have been wonderful if my girl got herself into the big leagues, but I guess a mii costume and a song is pretty cool. Anyways, awesome vid! You've earned yourself a new sub!

I voted on the Ballot 3 times (via 3 different ip addresses, because my paranoid ass wasn't about to take chances): once for Banjo, once for Simon, and once for Shantae.
Getting Simon in the base roster and Banjo almost immediately announced for the first Fighters Pass felt like a dream, man. Like...damn. It was like finding the last two pieces to a puzzle I'd been close to giving up on for the past 15 years. Magical. Miraculous. All this game needed to feel complete was Shantae. And we had an entire _second_ Fighters Pass to make that happen!
But man, once we got hit with that one-two sucker punch of Steve and Sephiroth, I felt like "...nah, she's not coming." With only 3 characters left in the entirety of Ultimate, the stakes felt too high and her odds just didn't feel right anymore. But I still wanted her in _somehow,_ so I shifted my goal post: "I'll happily settle for a Mii costume over nothing at all."
And brother, not only did we get one, but we got one alongside fan favorite heavy hitters like Lloyd and Dante. In a wave where Sakurai specifically stated that all those costumes were based on some of the most requested characters post-development.
_Shantae,_ our weird little belly-dancing purple-ponytailed indie half-genie, was acknowledged by Masahiro Sakurai as being highly requested. That ain't nothing.
(Plus it motivated me to actually pick up and lab Brawler because you bet your ass I was going to main all 3 of my Ballot characters _regardless_ of how they got in!)
@@robofistsrevenge3288 I would pick up Mii Brawler with the Shantae skin if it didn't cost extra money, like I'm sorry, but I'm not paying for mii skins when I could play as 80+ characters with actual movesets. Plus, I got my number 1 never ever when Ridley came in, so there's my silver lining.

It’s so funny that Steve got into smash. I remember when I went onto TH-cam and I saw a thumbnail of a video “STEVE IN SMASH?” I thought it was a joke and I was absolutely flabbergasted when it was real.

Considering the fact that "Freedom Planet" was actually released on the Nintendo Wii U in 2015, I never would have thought about wanting to have Lilac as a playable character until after "Super Smash Bros. Ultimate" came out, especially since it happens to be one of the best indie game titles I've ever played with an appealing cast of characters, and she would have been perfect for the roster due to her having a unique set of moves. Sadly, though, she didn't seem to have a chance after Sora became the final DLC character to complete the roster, and I would really love to see her in a Smash Bros. style game as well...

I was one of the little kids who voted for Daisy in the fighters ballot. I like to think I helped get her in ultimate lol
Honestly that's what I speculated when Ridley and k rool got in probably was in the top 15 top 20 seeing people request these characters. Terry probably was request by kof fans and Latin America there were also fans of this game in China and Japan or snk went up to sakurai who was a fan of kof asked hey we will give you the rights to put terry in smash we will give you a ton of music and Characters in your game.
I 50%50% agree. Latin America could be a huge amount of votes, but the popularity was for KOF and not Fatal Fury. Latin America people knew very well Iori, Kyo Rugal, Ash, Mai etc. But Sakurai respected a lot origins and he chose Terry.
My personal theory was that the ballot was never meant to be for Sm4sh, but it was always planned to be used for Ultimate. Nintendo just never told us that, because if they had reveled that there'd be a new game, all the hype for 4 would've vanished in an instant. I think Ruy, Cloud and Bayonetta, along with all the returning fighters from Melee and Brawl were planned to be DLC from the start and they only left out one spot at the end for the ballot results, so it at least would've seemed like the ballot was meant for 4. However, then Bayonetta got a lot more votes than they had expected, and she fit the criteria for a hype brand new 3rd party, so they probably just decided to brand her as the ballot winner and then had a free slot, which they chose Corrin for because of the new Fire Emblem game.
I think Ridley may have been top 5 instead of Simon. At the time Ridley was very controversial because he was known to be too big to be considered for smash bros.
I would agree, but I interpret "realizable" as the possibility of them being in the game from like a discussion standpoint, and Ridley is a Nintendo character, so I think the top 5 would have to be all 3rd parties, but that's just me.
@@BlazinBaconYT To be fair, Sakurai said Ridley was "too big" too implement into Smash so he would not be realizable at the time. Plus, it was confirmed at E3 from Sakurai himself during the Treehouse Ridley got alot of fan demand from the west, even earning the nickname "Captain America"
@@SmashMarioPro nah I understand that, but I'm just saying that's not how I interpret the "realizable character" it. But I can completely understand that interpretation though, it's just that I don't agree with it is all

I have a conspiracy theory. I actually think Sora did NOT win the Smash Ballot and was just a marketing stunt. If you look at fan polls, Sora only ranks high on polls made AFTER Smash 4’s ballot. Not counting mobile games or remakes, the last Kingdom Hearts game at the time was in 2012 on the 3DS, and Kingdom Hearts III wouldn’t come out for another 4 years. Plus given how major Kingdom Hearts games weren’t on Nintendo at the time and the fact that more people probably voted for a Final Fantasy rep, I don’t see him getting much traction. The Sora for Smash campaign didn’t really take off until Ultimate. So why would he get in? Well at the time, Square Enix was trying to impress investors with cloud gaming technology, and they needed to show that it would be popular. They needed something that people would buy no matter what. So they decided to put cloud version of the Kingdom Hearts series on Switch. But, to further drive up sales and excitement they requested that Sora be put in Smash. Do you ever find it funny that the Kingdom Hearts cloud ports were announced by Sakurai in that reveal? That’s why.
TL;DR: Sora was put in Smash to promote Square Enix’s bad business practices.
The funniest part is it didn’t even work. Everyone immediately saw the KH cloud ports as scummy and lazy.

Maybe, but purely due to the timing of Rayman Legends.
I voted for Rayman, I really wanted him in, but back in Smash Wii U, by the time Ultimate came out, Rayman Legends was half a decade old, and now's been 3 years since Ultimate came out so... yeah, it was kind of easy to lose the enthusiasm.
I know for a fact on the Ballot, that I voted for Steve and Annoying Orange completely unironically.

I wonder if people voted Bayo just based on the psychology of it.
I was one of the ones that voted her because I thought: well Snake was in there and he’s from an M rated game. Smash is mostly cutesy and cartoony, let’s get another edgy non-pg character in there, aka Bayonetta.
I think people low key like edgy characters, I also wanted Shadow, and Midna from Zelda Twilight Princess.

@@yoder6162 If a character is too edgy, it wouldn't fit the 12 plus age rating. Thanks to Bayonetta's creativity, censoring her is very easy.
@@orangeslash1667 I wasn't referring to Smash Bros then. My point was disapproving of a character or theme on the sole proposition or assumption of it being "edgy" and to exclusively make it a bad thing is just close minded, rather stupid if you ask me.

The the theory of Corrin being added for being the most popular in Japan makes no sense. First of all Corrin was revealed for Smash only 6 months after FE Fates came out in Japan. This decision couldn't have allowed it be done right after the game game came out so it would have required a bit more time to see if he was popular (according to the theory you said), at which point it would have been too late to "plan" for him. This could only mean that Corrin was chosen even before Fates was released. Furthermore patch 1.08 which added Corrin's slot, released 11 days before Fates came out. They wouldn't just add the slot like that, it was definitely planned months before.
That's fair. I still think he got votes on the ballot cause the first time a fire emblem fates trailer was around January, so it would give enough time for people to want him in even if we didn't see a lot of what he looked like at the time. Regardless though, you raise good arguments. My fault on that.
@@BlazinBaconYT Most popular characters and Corrin doesn't mix. You need a serious history check. Corrin is the most hated protagonist in Fire Emblem history. Corrin was only there for promotion just like Roy (who was in Smash before his actual game came out). Fates was only out for a few months in Japan first by the time Corrin was announced.
Being totally fair, byleth was an extremely popular pick in Japan long before 3 houses came out. Could be the same for corrin.
Not saying byleth was chosen for their popularity though. Sakurai specifically mentioned he wanted to put byleth in as a personal challenge.

I thought it was confirmed Corrin was included in Smash 4 because the team wanted to have a DLC character that was from a recent game. And Fates had already been out in Japan by that point so they went with Corrin. Elma from Xenoblade X was suspected to be another choice for them but my theory is that they likely didn't pick Elma as her playstyle would be too similar to Bayonetta. Who would release as DLC around the same time. So they went with Corrin who had a completely different fighting style.
Back to the ballot talk, it sucks that Elma didn't get a sizable chance during the ballot. Because by the time Xenoblade X came out in the west the ballot had already closed. So who knows if she would have gotten an increase in votes to make it to Ultimate's base roster. Then again even now X is the most overlooked Xenoblade entry.
Oh really was Elma's playstyle similar to Bayo in X? I actually don't remember that because it's been so long since I had played X and I didn't get very far in the game
@@BlazinBaconYT Her class is called Full Metal Jaguar. Which is a very speedy and dodgy class. She also wields dual guns similar to Bayonetta. And even has a sliding move where she fires her guns. Sliding Slinger. And while she would have dual swords to help differentiate her. I feel like a speedy gun-wielding character releasing around the same time as another one would be a bad idea. It'd be like if Kazuya was released right after Terry in Ultimate's DLC. Yeah they play differently but the general style is still the same.
@@FireFury190 Since Smash is a platform fighter, one aspect that could be a shoe in is if the character has recovery potential??? So Corrin and Bayonetta were chosen for one reason, they have wings!!!!

Terry is well loved in South America, Asia, and the underground part of the FGC. He's literally the mascot of the FGC, and not Ryu. Remember even Kirby's Japanese voice actress was extremely happy with her Power Wave line.

If that's your opinion, that's fine I guess, though I don't see where they speculate about the other fighters that haven't been directly confirmed by Sakurai. Either way though, there are lots of channels that cover the same things, but they do it in their own style, and that's what I wanted to do, cover the topic in my own way.
