I think the biggest flaw with the year was the lack of wholely original and luigi focused games, especially on wii u, especially since it was a dying console, and this wasn't helping. I mean look at the line up again. Luigi's mansion 2 was a 3ds exclusive, mario and luigi dream team has you ironically play as mario more, dr luigi is just dr mario with new pieces, and 3d world, and a modified version of super Mario bros u, which didn't get physical copies until later... That's it? No Luigi's mansion on wii u? No luigi platformer with fully new concepts and gameplay focused around him? Not even just like, a greatest hit tracks for mario kart 8 that have luigi theming? Almost all of it were just green mario games, I'm pretty certain that's where the joke originally took off again from as well. And the few things he dies have, 2 of them you can choose to ignore the year entirely with, because of how 3d world works, and again, you mostly play as mario in dream team, you don't have control over luigi in battles, instead he boosts Mario's strength. Outside battles he's more important sure, but that's mostly done via starlo actually, messing with his face. And even then, there's nothing that makes you think luigi has to be the one to do it, mario probably could have been the one asleep with luigi entering his sleep. And the funniest bit, browsers inside story shws how to do a mario and luigi game with focus on a character. Just making luigi sleep walk, and you have to control it to do something would have been enough to make it feel more luigi focused, as at least then, you can have luigi only battles that aren't gimmicks, thus giving us the feeling of exploring luigi, mind, body, all of him. A simple change in direction could have made this game more luigi focused, rather than feeling like he could be replaced by anyone else storywise. Peach, bowser again, hell waluigi could have replaced him.

Wasn't that poll proven to be BS? I don't doubt that it had some truth to it, but I heard that the "poll results" for America, Europe, and Japan was biased.

I don’t hate the sword fighters or anyone who enjoys the sword fighters, but I just wish that some other kinds of characters made it in. I get that lots of people enjoy the sword fighters, but what about the other people that enjoy different types of characters? It’s amazing that many of the characters representations helped their respective series overall, but there’s lots of characters whose series are still poorly represented. The main one being sonic. I would’ve loved to see knuckles or tails. I don’t know, I don’t want to sound hateful but it just feels very disappointing. I wish that someone would see the whole “sword fighter” argument from the side of the people that don’t enjoy the sword fighters. Still, very nice video.

Great video by the way, but I'm glad to be rid of this community. 28:00 So people that wanted to disprove the leak (yes, and they did, because Smash Twitter absolutely hates Geno) proved that yes, you can mod Mii hats. But that wasn't the point. They were making full head models, when the leak itself kept the face visible. Up to this point, it wasn't done before in Ultimate, or wasn't really done at all really because like you said, no one cares about Mii costumes. They are not a substitute for fighters. There's a reason everyone dreaded them BECAUSE all they meant to the community is deconfirmation of the character. The leak also lacked the "mod crust" you see in both the debunks people made as well as many other mods. You notice the Smash 4 Mallow hat Musicboi did. It looked like crap, because it did. However the Cacomallow Mallow hat (as well as the Cacodemon hat) did not have this. This is why a lot of people DID believe the leak, because it looked official. It's very easy to tell when something's a mod and when something is official. Mods and what mod authors simply cannot compare to game developers unless they become game developers themselves. 39:45 Oh boy, SmashBurb. The same guy who WANTED the leak to be fake (again, people DID want to disprove this leak just because it had Geno in it, and actively celebrated when Geno got the costume again, please don't give them the benefit of the doubt here) and was in every GameFAQs thread that was posted about the Geno smashboards thread which was off-site harassment (remember, posts on GameFAQs about the thread were posted nearly every day), and brigaded that same thread and the Newcomer Speculation thread several times. An interesting character by the name of Tomasagaz14 made all those threads by the way, and was mentally disturbed in the head, obsessing over that thread and brigaded the thread constantly because he kept being an idiot and antagonised the thread, a bannable offence on Smashboards, and he was banned a lot. SmashBurb even got warnings several times because the Geno thread had gotten brigaded several times from toxic people like him, calling people in the thread a "cult" and "delusional" and any other insults they can come up with. Yet they had never did this with other character threads like Fawful that had even LESS of a chance than Geno. They were only brigading the thread because the thread was popular, and the reason it was popular is that it was basically an active social thread. The Newcomer thread is toxic, so people just ended up going to the Geno thread instead because of it. Ultimately the thread was getting so much bad attention from people like him (they were raiding the site constantly because of the Geno thread), they had to permanently lock the thread and resulted in many bans (including Fatmanonice, which was leading on the Geno thread with false hope constantly, this person is the primary reason why SmashBurb brigaded Smashboards too and why all those threads were made on GameFAQs, he also got doxxed by the way, so fun) when Geno got deconfirmed. Keep in mind that the Geno thread was one of the most popular threads on Smashboards at the time. It basically got Ridley'd. That thread also had to be locked several times in the past before it got a permanent lock just like the Geno thread did because of toxicity from off-site users like him coming into the thread to troll and antagonise everyone there. It wasn't pleasant to watch. He used the exact same username and had Revali as his profile picture. . Honestly, the Smash community is full of sociopaths and psychopaths, and I've never seen a community be as toxic as this one. Numerous people were doxxed over crap like this, and it's not okay. Anyways he should not be taken seriously whatsoever. He also has several alts on GameFAQs such as YosukeErdrick that he would also post. So, yes, DustinBuster and others (SmashBurb) wanted to debunk the leak from the very beginning by making condescending debunks that completely missed the point of why people believed the Cacomallow leak to begin with. They then celebrated when the leak turned out to be fake because of course they would.

I always favored Luigi over Mario. Still do. That this video came out in 2023 instead of 2022 is kinda fitting, almost a decade later. BUUUUUUT, the peeps at Nintendo DID do the man dirty with New Super Luigi U - that was literally New Super Mario Bros. U, but in Hard Mode. Wasn't aware of the merch and stuff that was goin' around back then. In fact, that's a whole lot of new stuff I've learned here. That bit about Mario confusing Luigi by wearing green is a deep cut and a sick nod to the early days of the games when Luigi's sprite was identical to Mario's and just a palette swap.

I was there. Honestly apart from the long awaited sequel to Luigi’s Mansion it was a hard year to be a Nintendo fan. Content was seriously lacking and what was there was very mediocre, the decision to focus on Luigi stuff really also affected the failing WiiU.

Quality video, was nice remembering a fun event from my childhood so thanks for the reminder. Only thing I'd change would be softening your game and watch sounds a bit as they are pretty piercing at times and maybe leaving out the little projared mention since regardless of how you feel about his content the poor guy got unjustly canceled in the end.

I definitely blame the Wii U for 2013 being Nintendo's worst financial year rather than Year of Luigi because both Dark Moon and Dream Team sold well enough that they got Nintendo Selects labels.

I will not take that 3ds disrespect as using it as a handstand......good video regardless lol
