Fun fact: You can also unlock Marth by simply just playing VS mode with the default 14 characters. You don't necessarily have to play Classic or Adventure Mode to get him. So I randomly saw this video in my recommended feed, thought -hey that looks interesting! And as I click I'm greeted by one of my remixes. Thank you for the shout out, and for the awesome content!
I remember looking at what was required for getting every trophy a long time ago, probably a few years after the game came out. When I saw the list of match bonuses, I knew I was never going to have every trophy.
When melee came out it was unlike anything else I played at this time, the music, atmosphere, and lore it deserves to make you think about life and uniqueness and progress. Definitely a very well crafted series.
Math major here The probability of getting a new trophy with doing 1 coin 20 times is about 97% (Assuming consistent odds like a rolling a die) so technically, statistically, using 20 coins is better odds for getting a new trophy BUT doing the 1 coin also means you can get multiple new trophies in fact you theoretically could get 20 new trophies... it's just that your odds are about 0.00000000000003%
You'll learn about Expected Value in your statistics class, where we can calculate the average "Trophies per Coin" and see, statistically, what's the optimal amount to spend. The formula here isn't bad: E[spending n coins at once]/n = (% chance with n coins) / n Supposing we start with an X% chance and add 5% per extra coin (according to the wiki), we get E[1 roll @ n]/n = (X + .05*(n-1))/n = 0.05 + 1/n*(X-0.05) Looking at this, we can deduce three cases about X (the % chance with one coin) - X>0.05 : the adding term is positive but being reduced as n increases, it's best to use one coin - X=0.05: the adding term vanishes, so all coins have the same expectation - X
Can you clarify exactly what percentage you’re working with there? Not a math major, but using the 20% odds of a new trophy (as given at 40:07) that seems to me that you should average out to 1 new trophy for every 5 coins spent. (Again, pretending the odds don’t get worse each time you get a new trophy, which of course they do) With that perspective, you should average out to 4 new trophies by spending the 20 coins 1-at-a-time instead of in a lump sum. At 40:24, the video discussed a 16% chance of a new trophy for each coin used, sooo… At 16% per single coin instead, it’s a bit messier, but dividing 100 by 16 is 6.25; so you average out to 1 new trophy for every 6.25 coins spent. With these odds, I think you’re most likely to average 3.2 new trophies for every 20 coins spent.
@@Dash123456789Brawl It's not that you're wrong, we're just looking at 2 different measurements For me, I am looking at the chance of getting *at least* one trophy. There are still the chances of more, but those are the odds for getting at least 1 What you are doing is looking at average which is a different measure, where you're looking at the 20% each time, so on average, it will be 4 (Which fits with the "at least one) So, put more simply You have a better chance of getting 1 trophy using 20 coins, than 1 coin 20 times, BUT you can ONLY get 1 trophy that way Doing it one coin at a time you are less likely to get 1 (or more) but you have the probability of getting more than one TLDR: Yeah doing 1 coin is more optimal, I just like math :P
@@sammysamlovescats Alright, thanks for clarifying! I thought you concluded that 20-at-once was better in your earlier comment; probably my own misunderstanding.
I didn’t play Melee back in the day, but god damn this makes the other Smash game 100% completions look like a cakewalk. Also fun fact, there were actually two trophies only available from an event in Japan and can now only be obtained by hacking (the Mario & Yoshi and Samus Unmasked trophies)
Luigi is my main, but I enjoy messing around on Icicle mountain because of the ice combined with Luigi's slipperiness. Also, you can defeat a Parakoopa with anyone if you use grab. You pick up the Parakoopa and then can throw them to one-hit kill them to get the bonus. (I'm not 100% sure if tether grab characters can grab a Parakoopa, though) I eventually got all of the trophies over the course of 5 years or so when I was young.
Thanks for making this video, it was really nostalgic to relive all of these achievements. The internet was still young in 2001 so information was really hard to get on how to unlock everything, and even methods that are now well known were up in the air to being true or not. I played Melee so much from the time of its release until Brawl came out on the Wii that getting the 4995 matches message came naturally, though I never ever came close to getting 1 million.
Honestly, if you play the game semi regularly since you are a kid on the same hardware for more than 20 years, you get every achievement and every message. I still remember the time from 8 to 12 years old when we were just messing around in the game and trying out random stuff and some things we saw in some TH-cam videos. I also remember the sweaty nights playing 1on1s stoned as hell when I was at university.
*And now theres an ACTUAL 100% achievement list that has 330+ achievements over at RetroAchievements and yes getting all 290 trophies is included as well as completing all-star on very hard with no continues.*
Space Travelers makes sense because in Ness’s home game Earthbound, the one of the main threats in the game are aliens like the starmen, so in this Smash event Ness is fighting characters from different planets to defend earth.
@@OurTakeYTI mean captain Falcon technically didn’t have to be part of it since he’s still technically a human, but Fox and Falco are animal aliens, Kirby is.. something it’s unclear what exactly he is (no he’s not a star warrior that’s just a title) and Samus is part Chozo and Metroid after Metroid fusion.
I unlocked all the trophies as a kid watching this makes me shocked I put up with all of this. and yet I am super nostalgic about it, one of my favorite gaming memories is an 8-year-old me and my dad sitting down with a list printed out on paper from GameFAQs with everything listed out for diskun, and me getting so excited when I got the sheriff achievement. I wonder if that save file still exists?
The main thing I've learned is that you really like spongebob and should 100% all the spongebob games. Additionally, the reason pichu had to be bred to be obtained in the pokemon games is because they were all slaughtered in smash so there's no more pika babies. You sir, are a monster.
Super Mario 128 was a tech demo for the game cube. It featured 128 Mario’s preforming different task to show of the capabilities of the GameCube. So I believe that It was actually an ester egg reference to the tech demo, but the tech demo was most likely a reference to Mario 64 because, like you said, 128 is double 64. So in a way it is a reference to Mario 64.
I think all I was missing in completing Melee back in the day was Diskun and Captain Olimar. It wasn't quite so bad back in the day. I had 2 or 3 Gamecube cames for the first few months of owning it, and spent a lot of time playing Melee with friends, haha
Mr. Game & Watch was the character that WON me over the moment I unlocked him. It was like playing a vintage cartoon character that was a love letter to a man's legacy very important to Nintendo's history.
@@FerinitheBloodHusky When someone thinks "Smash", they tend to ONLY think about the way that community plays it. That's not what Nintendo wanted, given the direction they took with Brawl, to spite the Melee community. Nintendo did the worst thing ever when it came to Ultimate - they CAVED and let the competitive community's ruleset be used at their events rather than the items and hazards they were doing at their own things. It's one thing for the grassroots community to do their own thing but Nintendo's events should not be following that - there's no longer a reason to watch as there's nothing different there
@@FerinitheBloodHusky He implies that only babies play with items on, but it's ironically the exact opposite. Only _cowards_ play with items _off._ Imagine playing Smash Brothers but literally being so insecure that you have to turn off several core mechanics because you can't think on your feet. Competitions would be a lot more interesting if it wasn't always the same two or three people winning.
@@Wendy_O._Koopa Funny because I enjoy how randomness can affect the game, like the random crits in Team Fortress 2. Turn off any sense of randomness and... well, you said it best.
Also came from the algorithm, this stuff is really well made. Something to note, I remember a top Melee player (I think Leffen?) tweeted that they got either the highest battles message or the 100k one, so in theory you could 100% on his copy specifically, or maybe a few other top players’. I imagine Cody for example would absolutely be able to truly 100% this game if he wanted to.
I remember my siblings and me actually had a save file this far progressed. Or, well, almost. I don't think we ever beat cruel Melee. But we played hours of matches with Celebi and Mew appearing and I didn't even know it was that special. We just played it regularly with friends over many many years. And for that, it's pretty cool, honestly. Sitting in a group doing matches and suddenly some obscure "achievement" message pops up - that's exciting as a kid. Definitely not meant to be grinded out like this though - and I'm glad the conclusion mentions this.
The mario 128 is a reference to the gamecube demo “game” from when they where showing off the gamecube called “Mario 128”. It would later become Pikmin.
you don't even need 4 controllers to get mewtwo faster, just plug your one controller into each port to select the characters, then let the match play out. Edit: No you can't
I used to travel back and forth from my home town to the city I currently live in, and I would always crash at my friends' place. We would always play melee, and I grinded to get 100% on their file. It took like 3 years.
People don't play with items on!? It's SO much more fun. one of the things I love about the game compared to other fighting games. I enjoy random elements like that
Super Mario 128 was also the name of a tech demo created during the development of the Gamecube. It rendered 128 Marios running around to show the power of the console and it inspired/eventually became Pikmin
Great video! Idk if you've made videos somewhere else but this video is well polished. Shocked you only have 29 subs. Good luck if you continue to make videos!
Regarding the Koopas and Paratroopas. You can defeat any enemy by grabbing them. You pick them up as if grabbing a heavy box or barrel, then when you throw them, they poof and it counts as a defeat, even if it's a Koopa. I think when I was trying to do this as a kid, I got Tom Nook naturally but never got Diskun. Doing Classic, Adventure, and All Star as every character was pretty fun! "Who plays with items?" Me bro.
I remember unlocking Ganondorf without the event. You just have to do an obscene amount of vs matches. Absolutely worth the time to get, and has been my main ever since.
It's clear a lot of these trophies and achievements were meant to be cleared over a long, long time. With many, many multiplayer matches with other people, not just solo play.
Excellent video. I usually don't take chances on lower viewed suggested videos, but I'm glad I clicked this. And I see its views going only up! Keep it up man
As a horrible, terminal completionist, this is exactly the kind of thing I am looking for both in a video & in a game. I can never get Melee, because I would hate every day I was not grinding out that final message, almost as much as I'd hate every day I was.
It's only a million matches, could set it to super sudden death settings or mega speed and jump off the edge; can get like 3 completions a minute or more, put in 5-10 minutes a day as part of your routine, should be done in less than a year even with lots of missed days! :D
Mr. Game and Watch has been my main since Melee, and it's been great seeing him getting more and more powerful with each game. Favorite stage as a kid was Onett because of the music and the Ramen food item lol.
Man, being a seven year old playing this all hours of the night with friends was wild. I remember when we got the warning that MewTwo was coming. We handed the controller to the best player since all of us were too excited and scared to try ourselves.
Thank you for making this video about Melee. Makes me happy that people still talk about it. Also my main is also the one and only Falco too and Yoshi’s Story is good. I don’t have a number one favorite but perhaps it’s this one maybe lol.
You can actually kill with luigis taunt, by setting a handicap of 9 for luigi and 1 for the enemy, while also having the damage ratio set to 2.0 in super sudden death.
Found this video randomly. Excellent work on this one! There was one thing I haven't seen anyone mention yet in the comments though. You can defeat any Adventure Mode enemies with any character (including Koopas and Paratroopas) just by grabbing them (not like an item, but with Z) and tossing them afterwards. It's actually faster to do that then just pummeling them especially the Hyrule and Icicle Mountain enemies. As for Tom Nook, I remember seeing "1,000 Coins" in my Nintendo Power Guide and thought the same thing about Coin Matches.
@@OurTakeYT Probably the thing more taxing than getting 1,000 Lottery Coins is the "Hammer Throw" Bonus. I remember spending countless hours on Brinstar taking an acid bath just for a chance to throw the thing, seemingly doing it, only to not have the Bonus at the end of the match. I did get it eventually and the Diskun Trophy, but it felt like a hollow victory given the frustration involved.
Are you sure you cant unlock toad? Just saying the only time every name in melee was hit in the credits was just a bit ago (look up a video for it) and if you think about it no one has met the criteria you set 😳👀
Believe it or not, I managed to unlock most of those things almost right away when I first got Melee. I had gotten my Game Cube and two games of my choice for my 13th birthday the year it came out. The two games I picked were Sonic Adventure 2 Battle and Super Smash Brothers Melee. At the same time, I had invited several of my friends over for my birthday as well. And two of my friends just wanted to play Melee on my Game Cube. Because of how long they were constantly playing Melee for rather than celebrating my birthday, almost all of those things, like unlocking Marth, was completed in a day.
What’s crazy is I did all of this casually as a child when I was 5-12 with my friends and myself. I got Pikmin and melee and a GameCube basically when it was released
the reason the Luigi unlock is tied to a specific number in the adventure mode timer is because in the original super Mario Bros, the number of fireworks that show up during the ending of a level is based on the number in the ones digit of the timer

Is there a save where someone actually did everything legit? All messages unlocked, no action replay used, all 100% legit done by a human. Does it exist? If somehow, that person got the 2 rare unlockable trophies by going to Japan as well, that save would be extremely rare.
I really appreciate the attention span we had as kids back in the day. I got 100% of this game as a kid from just playing hours and hours and hours of this game, and loved every minute of it.
I actually 100%ed this list 3 months ago. It took me about 5 years on and off to get to this point. I owe my success to the Smash Bros and NeoSeeker forums from over 20 years ago for the advice and tips. It also helped that I had a physical official Smash Bros Melee guidebook on hand for reference.
Here's how probability of the lottery works (probably). You have a pool of like 40 trophies that could come out, and the number of coins you put in changes that pool by removing duplicates (so at 1 coin the pool is like all 40, 20 coins the pool is like 3), and if the number of dont haves is greater than the size of the pool it says "99.9%" probably because "100% would break things" (because computers can be weird). In the beginning it works to just do 1, but after a while you're better off increasing your odds.
10:50 You called Roy, son of Eliwood and his Burning Blade. But his sword is actually the Binding Blade. The Burning Blade I believe you were referring to is actually Eliwoods sword, The Blazing Blade

And then he was in Brawl, and that was so _goddamn hype._
Back in high school my friends and I stumbled across an infinite damage glitch in Melee. It was a three person match. Donkey Kong grabbed Falco, and Pichu proceeded to jab him. Falco was unable to break out of the grab, and the jab never ended. It was wonderful.
Cool! Sounds like a great memory!

I remember looking at what was required for getting every trophy a long time ago, probably a few years after the game came out. When I saw the list of match bonuses, I knew I was never going to have every trophy.
The match bonuses were not fun lol
it isn't as crazy as it sounds! I've gotten them all in about 22 hours!
This feels like you took one of those giant Gamefaqs guides people used to write and just made it your script
as a kid i misunderstood the luigi unlock requirement and tried to get a 02 in the miliseconds.
I thought you unlocked him by beating the first stage at a specific time spot within 10 seconds or you missed.
Young link is supposed to be like 10 so normal Link is the adolescent one
When melee came out it was unlike anything else I played at this time, the music, atmosphere, and lore it deserves to make you think about life and uniqueness and progress. Definitely a very well crafted series.
Math major here
The probability of getting a new trophy with doing 1 coin 20 times is about 97% (Assuming consistent odds like a rolling a die) so technically, statistically, using 20 coins is better odds for getting a new trophy
BUT doing the 1 coin also means you can get multiple new trophies in fact you theoretically could get 20 new trophies... it's just that your odds are about 0.00000000000003%
You'll learn about Expected Value in your statistics class, where we can calculate the average "Trophies per Coin" and see, statistically, what's the optimal amount to spend. The formula here isn't bad: E[spending n coins at once]/n = (% chance with n coins) / n
Supposing we start with an X% chance and add 5% per extra coin (according to the wiki), we get E[1 roll @ n]/n = (X + .05*(n-1))/n = 0.05 + 1/n*(X-0.05)
Looking at this, we can deduce three cases about X (the % chance with one coin)
- X>0.05 : the adding term is positive but being reduced as n increases, it's best to use one coin
- X=0.05: the adding term vanishes, so all coins have the same expectation
- X
Can you clarify exactly what percentage you’re working with there?
Not a math major, but using the 20% odds of a new trophy (as given at 40:07) that seems to me that you should average out to 1 new trophy for every 5 coins spent. (Again, pretending the odds don’t get worse each time you get a new trophy, which of course they do)
With that perspective, you should average out to 4 new trophies by spending the 20 coins 1-at-a-time instead of in a lump sum.
At 40:24, the video discussed a 16% chance of a new trophy for each coin used, sooo…
At 16% per single coin instead, it’s a bit messier, but dividing 100 by 16 is 6.25; so you average out to 1 new trophy for every 6.25 coins spent. With these odds, I think you’re most likely to average 3.2 new trophies for every 20 coins spent.
@@Dash123456789Brawl It's not that you're wrong, we're just looking at 2 different measurements
For me, I am looking at the chance of getting *at least* one trophy. There are still the chances of more, but those are the odds for getting at least 1
What you are doing is looking at average which is a different measure, where you're looking at the 20% each time, so on average, it will be 4 (Which fits with the "at least one)
So, put more simply
You have a better chance of getting 1 trophy using 20 coins, than 1 coin 20 times, BUT you can ONLY get 1 trophy that way
Doing it one coin at a time you are less likely to get 1 (or more) but you have the probability of getting more than one
TLDR: Yeah doing 1 coin is more optimal, I just like math :P
@@sammysamlovescats Alright, thanks for clarifying! I thought you concluded that 20-at-once was better in your earlier comment; probably my own misunderstanding.

I didn’t play Melee back in the day, but god damn this makes the other Smash game 100% completions look like a cakewalk.
Also fun fact, there were actually two trophies only available from an event in Japan and can now only be obtained by hacking (the Mario & Yoshi and Samus Unmasked trophies)
I did all characters, stages, events, and trophies when I was a kid.
AND THEN I RESET THE GAME TO TRY AND DO IT AGAIN.
Never did.
(I'm not 100% sure if tether grab characters can grab a Parakoopa, though)
I eventually got all of the trophies over the course of 5 years or so when I was young.
5 years!? That's an absolute journey! Luigi on ice would be a crazy long wave dash lol
Hey, Thank you for watching this video! :)
Space Travelers makes sense because in Ness’s home game Earthbound, the one of the main threats in the game are aliens like the starmen, so in this Smash event Ness is fighting characters from different planets to defend earth.
ohh that makes sense
I used to print out gameFAQs with my older brother all the time! what a cool memory you reminded me of :)
Lol I was going through some of my stuff and found some old gamefaqs final fantasy 9 guides to beat the superboss ozma

Kirby and pokefloats. Fight me.
Any time!
Lol we fell asleep playing the game as kids, 3 controllers, basically woke up to mewtwo. This is the first time I heard about the 20 hours thing.
37:52 - "Who is playing the game with items on?" I am. And I want to see this inflicted by Nintendo upon the competitive community out of spite.
why, comp players are playing a completely different game
@@Pimploaf_YTP True, but that's what I like about TF2, just chaotic at times.
25:00 I'll never forget that when I booted up Melee for the first time as a kid, before I even got to the main menu it told me I unlocked the stage.
That's cool! You must have gotten the birdo trophy as your starting trophy!
I remember when I was a kid we would always be upset when mew came out of the poke ball because it wouldn't do anything lol. Thanks for watching :)
The mario 128 is a reference to the gamecube demo “game” from when they where showing off the gamecube called “Mario 128”.
It would later become Pikmin.
you don't even need 4 controllers to get mewtwo faster, just plug your one controller into each port to select the characters, then let the match play out.
Edit: No you can't
if you unplug the controller, the game turns that person into a cpu on the CSS...

Wild that this comment was made at 29 subs and now 11 days later, there are 1.16k subs

That's pretty cool! Ganon is an awesome character.
It's clear a lot of these trophies and achievements were meant to be cleared over a long, long time. With many, many multiplayer matches with other people, not just solo play.
I can definitely agree with that!

Ohh sweet I never knew that about the grabbing of them! Thank you and I'm happy I'm not the only one who thought that about the Tom book trophy.

That's pretty awesome! Gotta love all of the memories melee creates!

the reason the Luigi unlock is tied to a specific number in the adventure mode timer is because in the original super Mario Bros, the number of fireworks that show up during the ending of a level is based on the number in the ones digit of the timer
