Even if it was the best worst game anniversary, I want a 2nd Year of Luigi this year.
I felt that
The first Year of Luigi took place in the worst possible timing, with Nintendo suffering from the Wii U’s failure… I am so down for a second Year of Luigi, where it’ll be truly special and successful!!

Gotta love how the Year of Luigi had Nintendo hide pixelated Luigis in NSLU and 3D World, but then it just became a trend for Nintendo to just hide pixel Luigis in games released outside YoL. Captain Toad, Super Mario Odyssey, and even in Bowser’s Fury in the 3D World Switch port!

I was literally in 3rd grade when the Year of Luigi happened and even then although I couldn’t participate in the events that happened inside, it was still fun to see the green man get the attention he deserves.

If we’re talking reskins I would’ve loved a Super Luigi Land which would basically be a SML remake but greatly fleshes out Sarasaland (in the NSMB Style if you wanna cut Nintendo some slack), then when you beat the game you can playthrough it again as Daisy with her triple jump from Mario Run but her campaign would be harder. It would be a simple remake not trying too hard or anything and I’m sure Luigi being the great gentleman he is would love sharing the spotlight with his sweetheart Daisy.

I really don't think the Year of Luigi is the reason Nintendo doesn't do any cool anniversary stuff anymore.
The Year of Luigi was really just a happy accident. As you mentioned in the video, Dark Moon had already been known about for years. Dream Team had also been in development for quite a few years as well. I feel like they realized both games were releasing in 2013, and that it was also Luigi's 30th anniversary, and they were like "hey, what a coincidence! We could celebrate this!"
NSLU may have already been an idea in their head, but who knows? Maybe they had an idea for DLC and decided to make it Luigi themed due to the anniversary. And of course a lot of the smaller stuff like Dr. Luigi, 8-bit Luigis, and the Luigi versions of SMB1 and Mario Bros were created after they decided to do the Year of Luigi.
The sales issue was likely barely relevant to Luigi at all, so I don't think they would've saw it as a reason to stop doing celebrations like that.
Nintendo as a whole has never really done anything that grand for anniversaries. Skyward Sword HD was just a release happening that they tied into the 35th Zelda anniversary. And 3D All-Stars was a rushed game, probably just made out of an obligation to celebrate. We know Super Mario 35 was in development for quite awhile, but other than that I don't think they had many plans.
The actual celebration for Mario & Zelda anniversaries were the novelty Game & Watch systems they released.
Also, as a fun sidenote... As a kid I was absolutely convinced that 2014 would be the Year of Donkey Kong. Tropical Freeze was coming out, it was the 20th Anniversary of the original Donkey Kong Country, and Tropical Freeze's opening has DK celebrating his birthday. I was getting all pumped up for games like a successor to Donkey Kong 64, and maybe some smaller spin-offs like a DK Jungle Climber sequel. And then it never came lol.
Mmmm I see your point. The Game and Watches for Mario and Zelda were a really nice novelty and I would love to get them one day haha
And man what I wouldn't do for a Year of Donkey Kong. That's literally one of my favorite Nintendo franchises so that would have had me over the moon in 2014 XD One day he will get his recognition

I remember the year of Luigi. I was too young to part take in anything back then, and nowadays, I was looking for stuff from that year. Wish there was more creative and fun games, but I'm pretty happy with what I got. If they ever gave him a second run with this amount of support, I'd be all over it 😎

I will admit I am very nostalgic towards M&L Dream Team and Dark Moon especially Dream Team since it introduced me to Mario RPGs and since it is my favorite Mario & Luigi RPG game.

I had the silver Mario & Luigi Dream team 3DS XL. It’s essentially the equivalent to the one with all the Luigi’s on it since that was a Pal region exclusive and mine was the NA one.

My favorite character of all time is Luigi, and some of my favorite games(including my favorite game, Dark Moon) released during this event. I wish, I hope, I pray that Nintendo does SOMETHING year of Luigi based. Even if it’s just Dr. Luigi rereleased on Switch, I’ll eat it up(maybe even cry)

For anyone who says that Nintendo doesn’t go all out with anniversaries nowadays, remember this: Kirby had a terrific 30th Anniversary in 2022 and it’s still going this year when Return to Dream Land Deluxe releases.
Maybe that should be the next video lol. I really liked Kirby's 20th anniversary too not gonna lie, with the wii game that came out which had like every older Kirby game

On the topic of Luigi U, despite how derivative of theme it was it was uniquely fun even if it was nothing amazing. Only thing I'd change would be softening your game and watch sounds a bit as they are pretty piercing at times and maybe leaving out the little projared mention since regardless of how you feel about his content the poor guy got unjustly canceled in the end.

To be completely fair, the Year of Luigi started at a time where Nintendo were starting to fall apart at the seams because of the Wii U’s disastrous launch. At the very least, I’m glad to see that this hasn’t offset Nintendo from making more Luigi-based content (like Luigi’s Mansion 3) and it would be fun to imagine a Year of Luigi nowadays, where they’re more financially comfortable.
It’s funny the more I think about it; the Sonic series made 3 games where the main character wasn’t Sonic, then they put those games on devices that didn’t sell well (which in turn made those games not sell well), then chalked the failures of those games up to their audiences not wanting to see more of the side characters and stopped. The contrast here is really funny lmao
Yea I think if they did something similar to this now it wouldn't tank nearly as bad as the Year of Luigi did, one can only dream that that actually happens lol

so goin into this i only knew of luigi’s mansion, new super luigi u 🤢, dr luigi, dream team, a *bit* of what they did wit miiverse, and SOME other basic stuff… but yea u literally went through **everything** man. i watched every minute too, the editing was really well done.
and yea i do wish nintendo would do stuff like this again. they played it too safe wit zelda’s and mario’s 35th tbh. what they did was forgettable jus a few years later… even if nintendo lost half a billion, year of luigi was still memorable a decade later.

I definitely blame the Wii U for 2013 being Nintendo's worst financial year rather than Year of Luigi because both Dark Moon and Dream Team sold well enough that they got Nintendo Selects labels.

I was there. Honestly apart from the long awaited sequel to Luigi’s Mansion it was a hard year to be a Nintendo fan. Content was seriously lacking and what was there was very mediocre, the decision to focus on Luigi stuff really also affected the failing WiiU.

nah I would definitely say super mario 3d world was an underrated gem for sure lol. glad nintendo gave it a second chance on the switch. Also I think someone else mentioned it but I didn't know mario odyssey also had the Luigi sighting things as well
@@BlazinBaconYT yeah back when the luigi’s balloon world update came out the mario odyssey jp twitter posted locations for a hidden luigi or captain toad that would give you 100 coins or so, and even for the games 1 year anniversary the new donk concert was filled with them!

I know Year of Luigi 2 will probably never happen but here's to hoping for Month of Luigi 2 cause that would be nice to celebrate 40 years of Luigi (also I want to experience first hand (I was like 9 when The Year of Luigi happened (I think I heard of it and I saw the Dr.Luigi announcement but thats it) and I had not even known of the Month of Luigi until today.
