The biggest part of the Super Smash Bros. speculation scene is trying to guess which characters will make the cut, however not everyone's favorites are so lucky. But before we tackle Melee, let's go on a little detour and look at a very interesting source. The original fighter ballot - the Smash 2 poll!

I think the fans that voted for "Any Fire Emblem Character" ended up winning the poll in the long run.

@@nerd7946 nope. I like that Byleths moveset is different than the rest. But instead of 6 clone swordsmen, it would have been nice to get an axe wielder, a wyvern or pegasus knight, a heavily armored lance knight, or another mage type similar to robin.
And it extended as far as Ultimate unfortunately

Nintendo and Sakurai to be more precise. Heck there’s literally an event match in Melee titled “Fire Emblem Pride” where you fight Marth and Roy in a 3 Stock Match. But even then we are way past the Fire Emblem Charm with Corrin and Byleth they feel like they don’t belong in Smash especially Corrin.

I think you forgot to mention how the most significant representation of the Balloon Fighter in Smash is the Up Special for the Villager. And probably be the closest we get to having Balloon Fighter as a playable character in Smash.
Sakurai is running out of retro characters to add, though. After Pac-Man and Duck Hunt (and arguably Little Mac) were added Sm4sh, he didn't really have a lot left in that department for Ultimate.
So, if Sakurai wants another 8-bit rep, Balloon Fight may be one of the better options. (Excitebike, maybe?) The funny thing about Nintendo's largely forgotten NES games are that inclusion in Smash can spark a revival in the interest, as happened most obviously with Kid Icarus. Even if the scope of an NES game is not broad enough for a $60 release today, Smash can still be something to remember these pieces of gaming history by - nobody would remember Ice Climber today if it were not for Smash.
@@alexpotts6520 There's plenty of old Nintendo games. Add some of those characters like Ice Climbers.
When you consider what Sakurai said in Steve's Reveal, if the character he was suggested to he believes would not be able to do justice on, he would say no. With the Ice Climbers, their main playstyle doesn't actually represent the main point of their original games, just how they appear visually is what got them in Melee. There's not a lot you can really do with the Balloon Fighter, except for the recovery used for Villager. It just goes to show that some one-off NES games can be considered digging at the bottom of the barrel if fans really want new Nintendo Series reps as playable.
@@HyponMixhog I suspect he really resisted trying to include Steve, but in the end gave in to the requests from Nintendo execs wanting a piece of the the best-selling video game ever. One gets the feeling he has a similar regret about the overrepresentation of Fire Emblem but keeps feeling pressure from Nintendo to cross-promote the series.
On the fan side, too, we have seen this pattern, most obviously with Ridley, who was "too big", but also notably the Animal Crossing characters and Miis, who he thought were not appropriate in Brawl but later backtracked on.
It's a recurring pattern. Ultimately what Sakurai thinks can work is often overruled by his desire to please his fans, and yes, also his employers. The only thing stopping more retro includes is that we've kind of done them all now.

I can't believe we live in the timeline where Slippy got more votes than Peppy.
Slippy was always one of the more popular characters in Japan from the Star Fox series.
I can’t believe Falco, Slippy and Peppy were all considered to be Alts for Fox in Smash 64 like Hero.
Sakurai actually wanted to put James Bond in Smash. He was a huge fan of Golden Eye. I'm pretty sure he wrote articles about tips on how to improve at playing the game in the gaming magazine he helped contribute to.
It's amazing to think that Fire Emblem was requested right out the gate when Dragon Quest was already massive.
It probably existed in that perfect spot in the bell curve between too obvious and too impossible to spend a vote on, while Dragon Quest might have trended too far towards the impossible. Or...I'd like to say that, but people voted for a chocobo.
I suppose cause Final Fantasy wasn't seen as anywhere near as big of a deal as Dragon Quest. Course, they likely didn't know Squaresoft didn't want anything to do with Nintendo during the era. The prestige difference of a series with Toriyama's work might have been seen as way too impossible for Sakurai's small little Nintendo-focused romp, especially since Hal was independent at the time and Smash 64 was kind of a budget release

Interesting. Did the poll influence the Melee and Brawl trailers? It may be a coincidence, but Bowser and Peach are the first newcomers to appear in the Melee opening cutscene. Additionally, Wario is one of the newcomers in the first Brawl trailer.

I wish her moveset got overhauled though, namely from a DS game called Super Princess Peach where she uses Emotion Powers to Fight.
She was playable in a few games at that point though.

It’s crazy to imagine which ones would and could have been great, like Gooey, Leif/Sigurd, Sukapon, Darunia, and Toad.
If James Bond got added it would’ve truly been historical since they would’ve had to jump through so many Licensing Hoops to get him in. Keep in mind Rare had the License to it for sometime.

This video was very fun and mind blowing to watch! I’m mostly surprised that of all 3rd Party Characters people wanted Chocobo the most, Banjo ranking higher than Diddy and the fact the Geno really was requested before Brawl and the Smash Kingdom Newgrounds Parody videos.

Chocobo mii costume eventually got in Smash ultimate alongside Sephiroth as DLC.
I would love Paula as a playable character. But I want to see another Mother character playable.

I really want to see Duster as a playable character, and he's the only party member from 3 who doesn't have a 3d model (if you don't count Flint)
I kinda want Masked Man as a fighter. Pokey/Porky can be a stage hazard. Ninten can be a mii sword fighter (sword is his bat)
I think Porky in his mech (w/ Giygas stage) has the best shot. The primary villain that connects MOTHER2-3 together, is nowhere in Ultimate, and the only missing boss. His absence is utterly bizarre, if he doesn’t eventually make it in. Masked Man as a semi-Lucas clone could work too, but doesn’t seem likely.Too bad everyone didn’t get an echo fighter, because Ninten & Masked Man would be easy to implement! Since Ness’/Lucas’ party appears during their final smashes, it doesn’t seem likely that Paula/Kumatora have a chance.
Dreaming about a Prince Richard trophy in Melee? You must really love that game.
Honestly it's still pretty surprising that Toad never got promoted to playable status. He's one of the most important Mario characters and possibly the most iconic Nintendo character not playable in the game. Even characters like Daisy and Rosalina made it in before him.
Hopefully one day we'll see him join the fight.

@@PlayPodOG How do you know that? Sakurai has shown that he has the ability to make characters that no one would think of adding to Smash have a fun moveset. Toad could definitely have a good moveset.

Believing you can fly without wings doesn't mean you can. Blind faith gets you killed. Think, come up with reasons yourself, if you believe he can then you must know something.
Or is Toad player 3 and 4 which is just Doctor Mario? Low jumps but hard hitter. A clone of a clone of Mario.
Toad In a lot of playable appearances is strong fast and or can jump high FYI, but he prolly wouldn’t work honestly

I was as shocked as anyone when piranha plant was revealed and it made me think could a generic enemy from other franchises be revealed like from zelda or metroid for example

The first one that comes to mind is a Waddle Dee....if Bandana Dee didn't already exist making the option obsolete. I also think a Hammer Bro could have worked instead of Piranha Plant (and is the only other generic Mario enemy that I think has enough moveset potential), but I think Plant was the better choice of the two.
But that's what makes the plant special, he's pretty much the WTF choice for this roster. No one saw it coming, a generic enemy like that making it in. If we just started adding Waddle Dees and Goombas alongside him, it would take away from that.

Yeah, but how many people remember that? Dark Samus being the titular Metroid Prime is something you only realize if you saw Prime 1's 100% ending.

I’m guessing it’s because Banjo was already a big star by the time BFD was still in development, and supposedly it didn’t help much that it came out on the end of the N64’s era.
Still I personally prefer Conker a million times over Banjo any day of the week.
Bad Fur Day wouldn’t be released until a year later.
Japan did get Live and Reloaded beforehand, but Rare Replay still serves as a technicality as the Collection never had proper localization in Japan (menus and games are still in English even when played on a Japanese Xbox One).

They didn't have any villains in Smash then, so it makes sense.
I understand why many Sword fighters was voted for smash at that time. No one was in smash yet, so people chose the more familiar characters. Also, i almost said what about Skull Kid, but MM didn’t even come out yet.

Imagine if Archanea was the Gen 1 of Fire Emblem like it is to Pokémon since we have lots of Gen 1 Reps, and we got characters like Sheeda, Jeorge, Linda, Tiki, and Minerva. I’d honestly take over what we have now.
@@brandonwilliams6119 Corrin I understand, but 3 Houses is probably one of the most important FE games ever made considering all of the people who became fans of the series because of this game. 3 Houses essentially finished the job that Awakening started by revitalizing the series as a whole. I'd be down for more original FE characters, but Byleth stays.

This is really cool that some of the requests got in melee as a trophy or something like even if they didn't be a fighter they got something which is really cool that Sakurai or whoever listened to requests.

So glad I was recommended this. It surprises me to see Geno, Banjo-Kazooie and some others were requested as fighters this early on! My biggest surprise was with "Any Pokémon" option and "Any Fire Emblem" option, even though mind you both series were at early STAGES! Pokémon only had up to Gen 2, and there was no Roy yet and nothing past Fire Emblem 6 (No Eliwood, no Lynn)
Fire Emblem had existed for nine years and had five games at that point, so I wouldn't really say that it was in its early stages. It was a pretty well-established series even before FE6 came out.

It was still too early for smash to introduce side characters for not yet represented series (Marth & Roy are main protagonists of their respective games). What I mean is even then you had Wizards, archers, Shamans etc. In Fire Emblem... Huh...
I am kinda sad that no older fire emblem characters made it to smash...Marth is the only one who is from a game made by the original creator of fire emblem...
This sad fact really hit hard as the Shozou Kaga games are some of my favorites and FE tried many different gameplay mechanics when he was in Charge but now it’s been purely Waifu Dating Sim and Fanservice Emblem.
I will buy dlc once I get Sephiroth to go with cloud.

Man the possibility of melee wario still fascinates me. What would his land 1-3 plus mario land 2 and Mario spinoff inspired moveset look like?

God to think there was a time gooey could outvote meta knight especially when meta had more prominent roles combined. Also that slippy outvoted wolf. And a time when fire emblem's candidates were all kaga era. Though the most surpsing thing might legit be that Japanese fans had a taste for goldeneye when my understanding is first person shooters generally aren't popular over there
I still have to wonder if Diddy had a special situation in melee given he had no trophy but dixie and k Rool did even though diddy headlined his own games more often and is probably the most popular donkey kong character besides donkey himself.
Lastly's it kind of neat how a lot of these choices did somehow get into smash in some form

God wow banjo really hit top 8 back then.
Slippy has always been one of the more popular characters in Japan for the Star Fox series. The primary reason people hate him in the States, ironically, has to do with the heavy compression for his voice work in Star Fox 64, which made his voice higher-pitched and more grating than it was intended. That, and the fact that he constantly gets baddies on his tail and you have to bail him out every time.
But you can look up online the uncompressed audio lines for Star Fox 64, and hearing Slippy's original English voice is night and day compared to the heavy compression in the game.
Melee Wario always fascinates me too my dude, he would be very different had he made it into Melee.

Of course all the primary antagonists of the biggest Nintendo series are in now (unless you consider Tom Nook to be the antagonist of Animal Crossing I guess).
Alex Potts and I don’t. What I’m saying is that we still are kinda lacking villains on the smash roster when compared to heroes. Smash Ultimate made some steps in the right direction but I feel we can sill do more.
@@toxicastigator I feel like 3rd party villains is probably the next step. Eggman would be an interesting pick, funnily enough I never see him mentioned and Tails, Knuckles or even Shadow tend to come above him in terms of a 2nd Sonic rep.

I frankly just wish that more Final Fantasy characters, particularly ones like the original Warrior of Light, Terra, Locke, Vivi, Freya, or Cecil had gotten into Smash bros. Way too many Fire Emblem characters at this point (7 is overkill for a series that has very similar lead protagonists that mostly wield rapier swords).
Kirby, Donkey Kong, and The Legend of Zelda need way more representation in Smash.

My idea would expand on series that don't have many fighters. Give Baby Mario or Poochy for a yoshi rep ,or make Shadow Falcon playable with ganondorf's main moveset while changing Ganondorf's moveset.

Only sad thing is that if they added James Bond today, it would be new Bond, and not Gamecube or Goldeneye Bond.

5th place in the poll and the best Sakurai can be bothered with is as a Captain Falcon clone. They did Ganondorf dirty.
Ganondorf was in one game at the time so there were nothing much they can do for him in terms of move sets.

I would love a playable Chocobo! I was just talking about how I want a Chocobo amiibo after my Joker and Hero amiibo's came in. I... was talking to my pet chicken, so that's why it came up.
They could dump all sorts of iconic moves from different classes onto Chocobo and have them wear different class outfits as alts (Black Mage, Warrior, etc.)
The character on top of my Most Wanted list is Crash (I'd prefer Spyro, but Crash seems more likely and had a bigger impact as PS's unofficial mascot), so seeing him requested as early as pre-Melee gives me just that tiny bit of extra hope.
But if we only get Chocobo and Crash never makes it in, I'd still be over the moon.
Chocobo would have competition if Square Enix gets another especially against Sora and Geno. Crash Bandicoot has more of chance especially since he is getting a new game and demand for him seems to have grown over time.
A chocobo and moogle as a pair could be cool as well, à la the Choco/Mog summon.

I never understood why so many people want non video game characters to appear in Super Smash Bros.
If I wanted a non video game character to be in a fighting game, it should be their own fighting game. (*Cough* Goku fans *Cough*)
I actually can. Smash Bros is one of if not the most popular fighting franchise games to exist. (Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter may or may not be more popular but it's definitely top 3.) It's also one of the easiest to pick up. So there's definitely an appeal for having a favorite 4th party character from your favorite series show up and duke it out with Nintendo's, now gaming's most popular icons.
That being said, I completely understand why that will never happen. Licensing cost and how said character should be represented alone kill that dream.

Does the Japanese text refer to Sukapon as female or did you just call them she purely because they're pink? Cause all the english text about them says He. Even his Assist Trophy Tip in Smash Ultimate says "his".
So this was actually just a habit of mine haha. Sukapon is actually genderless, but in Japanese fan sites for Joy Mech Fight Sukapon is often referred to as a 'she' and so I've just picked that up over the years.

Tbh, IIRC K. Rool’s support would start for real during Melee and post Brawl. And skyrocketed when Duffy Kong was release. With 3 disappointments in a row (Braw, Smash 4 and Smash 4 DLC) K. Rool fans got scared for each rejected game, starting fights with Dixie Kong supporters and Ridley supporters for some reason. However, once Ultimate was released and the notion of “EVERYONE IS HERE” K. Rool fans (as with most other semi toxic fan bases) shifted to a more positive light, supporting each other (finally, and becoming very good friends with both Dixie and Ridley). K. Rool supporters were overjoyed with Ridley’s inclusion as it seemed like hope for K. Rool would light brighter, and WHAT a marvellous day it was when K. Rool got revealed at the end of the Smash direct. ✨

@@soul4speech583 The history of K Rool support is interesting to me. His support as "the villain Smash needs" was always overshadowed by Ridley for Melee, Brawl, and eventually Smash 4, when Ridley's fanbase more or less finally gave up after Sakurai showed time and time again he didn't see Ridley as a fighter, so the entirety of the "the villain Smash needs" fanbase combined into K Rool right in time for the ballot. Then, seeing that they were fighting a losing battle and realizing that any new DK character was better than none, the Dixie fanbase joined with the K Rool crowd as well making his support astronomical. After such overwhelming support though, only to be rewarded with a mii costume, the K Rool fanbase was crushed way quicker than Ridley's headed into Ultimate. Ironically, it was only after both fanbases had more or less given up all hope that they were rewarded with both Ridley and K Rool debuting in Ultimate. It was a long journey, but I'm glad they both got in eventually. And best of luck to you Dixie fans. If the Smash series doesn't reset, I'm sure your all's time is coming soon.
@@Anime9042 I don't see how Ridley foreshadow's King K. Rool, K. Rool seems to be foreshadowing Ridley to me, as Ridley was not highly considered for Melee and Brawl, it was when the production of Smash 4 was almost done since people saw the first exclusive Nintendo Direct focusing on Smash 4 when the 5 characters reavealed for Smash 4's roster are 4 veterans (between Zero Suit Samus, Sheik, Yoshi, and Charizard) and a newcomer (Greninja), because they saw Ridley's feet behind Pikachu during the direct, though most people were also expecting K. Rool.
@@soul4speech583 True, but would have been nice to see K. Rool get at least one vote, even if he were below Diddy Kong, that way along with Bowser, Ganondorf, King Dedede, Wolf, and Mewtwo, King K.Rool can be with his fellow villains.
