NOTE: At multiple points during the video, I mentioned that the play in question was at the 12-yard line. It should've been the 17-yard line. My apologies on that!
The irony is that the OTHER Oklahoma team was ALSO down 22-3 yesterday (against Utah) and showed how to do this -- they scored two touchdowns and went for two both times, making the final score 22-19.
OU was never in this game offensively and mathmatically eliminted probalby somewhere in the second quater. If you can't move the ball on TN's defense, TN was finsihed worrying about any dynamic on offense other than just running the ball, letting your D control the game and just getting out with a good convincing win.
I agree that going for two would have been the right decision, but at the same time when they decided to just get extra points I didn’t question too much, especially after the penalty. The miss just made it much worse. Granted, I’m a volunteer fan so…..
The penalty doesn't change the point/possession situation. Late in the game when you're down multiple possessions, you have to start looking at point distribution. Going for two is the ONLY scenario that potentially cuts the requirements from two TDs to a TD (with 2pt conversion) and a FG. The worst case in a 2pt conversion attempt and an extra point attempt is exactly the same. The best case for the former is better though because it changes the lay of their next few possessions in their favor.
@@LegendaryDorkKnight I’d like to point out that I did add that, as a Tennessee fan, I’m more than a little biased on the decision. So while the point is valid, I’m also not gonna question a decision that directly benefits my team.
Useless trivia: the Patriots were in an identical situation against the Giants in 1996. They also incorrectly kicked the extra point, but rallied for two more scores and won 23-22.
and if they wouldn't have got that extra point they would have lost that game is exactly my point this guy is an idiot they know exactly what they were doing the odds of him making that 20 yard extra point and Holden Tennessee scoreless for 8 minutes versus actually getting the two touchdowns you were going to need anyway and taking a one-point victory even if they did get the field goal giving yourself some leeway that guy is a fucking moron
that 20 yd 2 point conversion I mean a very very low on play percentage my bet is the anticipated Tennessee possibly scoring again and having to get two touchdowns anyway and taking the one point victory I can't believe he's that moronic
A check down in a Hail Mary situation. Apparently you didn't watch the highlights of Dolphins vs Patriots 12-9-18 or Chiefs vs Cowboys 11-5-17 both were check downs for touchdowns.
Regarding why nobody asked Venables about it: Journalism is in the toilet. Reporters care less about writing great articles and are more worried about being banned from the press conferences. Too many soft people out there, coaches, players, and reporters.
Here's the real mind scratcher for me: the penalty which led to the kick happening from the 17 yard line happened on a 2 point conversion attempt. So Venables had already done the math right and made the correct decision, and only then messed it up.
Tennessee called the dogs off at the end of the third quarter! This game wasn't even close heupel just wanted to keep it respectable cause they honored him before the game!
Yeah honored him by having the defense fake injuries in order to slow Heupels offense down. Real respectful. I ain't even going to say anything about the field conditions. There was no respect. Only knives in backs for Heupel. Should be ashamed cheaters
@@bluu7964 Then Oklahoma should have ponied up the money to keep their QB. The fact they didn't indicates the coaches thought Arnold was the better option.
JG8, didn't you cover this when the Cowboys kicked an extra point after a penalty, (which wouldn't have been a penalty if Dak ran the ball) in the Cowboys/Packets playoff game last season. Ironically, Brandon Aubrey missed it.
When they kicked that extra point. I was begging someone to make an edit and add it to the video of the presser with them asking Brent why he didn't still go for the 2pt conversion, but add the Charlie Sheen question, like he's looking at Brent Venables like he did Jennifer Grey and asking "Drugs, is it drugs?". I mean, I wanted Oklahoma to give Tennessee a fit. Why? Cause I have family who are fans of that team which uses that ugly citrus orange looking butt paste of a color as one of their teams colors. But it really isn't that color. Nope, it's that irritating song that not only their students and fans sing every time they fart, or pick their noses, and doesn't stop singing. At least until the opponent scores or has a big play. My cousin called me three times Saturday night. When I answered "ROCKY TOP WILL ALWAYS BE HOME SWEET HOME TO MEEEEE..." while I'm like 😖...😠...🤬 (End call). I hate that freaking song! I had to mute the TV while I watched the game cause they sung that song so damn much. Arnold fumbling that first ball was a bad fumble. They were moving the ball and had some momentum. But I thought they would get over that play and not make another mistake. Then here comes that damn pass that was a lateral. After that play, I figured Tennessee would score 40. I think Hueple could have called more scoring plays for discount Tua Tungaviola (Look, I'm not typing his name, so sue me) All I will say tho bout Tennessee. They are a very very good team. But when they face a team with a better offensive line, and a decent secondary, Tennessee nnessee WILL lose.
I get why this is a bad decision but you also have to keep your opponent from scoring for it to be logical and that didn't happen either so, what you are getting at really wouldn't have mattered anyway
First of all, the Extra Point would have made it a 12-point game, which is 2 TDs. If you go for 2, there is no guarantee that they get it in the first place AND it's only a 11-point lead, which is still 2 TDs with the last one being the game winner. Second, Tennessee dominated this game from start to finish. Oklahoma was not going to win man. kicking the EP makes it where Oklahoma CAN win the game in regulation 22-10 to 22-17 and 22-25 win.
Wrong. If you’re down 11, you need a FG and one TD plus a 2pt conversion. If you end up 4th and long but in Fg range you can kick the Fg first and then it’s a one score game. You don’t have to score a td both times. Or if you get a TD and 2pt first now you just need a Fg which is much easier than a TD drive.
@@shag139 Yes, but most teams won't play for the tie to avoid OT. In college, OT is a crapshoot there's no guarantee Oklahoma can win since Tennessee's offense was barely stopped all night. Oklahoma is better off going for the win in regulation.
@@nintendopeachgaming1647 sorry you’re making no sense. Which is easier to accomplish: score 11 on two drives or be forced to score two TD’s on two drives all in the last 6 mins of the game? Of course you want to score two TD’s regardless but being down 11 gives you the option of a FG vs a 4th and long or a Hail Mary. If you’ve got to score two TD’s it doesn’t matter if you were down 12 or 13.
@nintendopeachgaming1647 - You are absolutely correct in your comment. This crazy video popped up in my feed, and it’s so out in left field that I had to drop a few comments. I was watching this live with my son, and as soon as he saw the kicker on the field, he said, "That's tomorrow's episode of Dumb Decisions, isn't it?" I just nodded.
I can actually see why. If they missed an extra point, a 13 point game is a tie, 12 would make it a win. Your unlikely to get a 2 or make a long field goal.
If they missed an extra point? Why would you count on missing on a 99% play? Nobody said it was going to be a long FG. You can kick a FG from a lot of distances.
So dumb. You still go for two to get to 11. Whether it’s 12 or 13 is irrelevant as you need two touchdowns vs one td a 2pt and a Fg the other. Almost as dumb as Butch-Tanic-Jones kicking the PAT against UF to go up 13 instead of 2 and 14. Of course we give up 2 TD’s and lose by one.
The reporters not asking about this isn't that serious, so please lay off them. Oklahoma's offense struggled again and there was a QB change that's making news throughout the Sooner State, so that's probably why no reporters asked about it.
