Great video. Never realized how awful Oregon St was for so long. Growing up in the 90s and 2000s i always remembered them being solid and a pain to play
Both Oregon schools were both pretty terrible during that era (it took Phil Knight money and the coolness of his Nike brand to help the Ducks out of their own pit of despair.)
Iowa fan, I had a front row seat to a lot of ISU’s 1982-99 misery. Without a trace of hyperbole, they were easily in the running for worst major conference program of all time. To see what they’ve done under Campbell is truly remarkable, I don’t know if the general college fan has any idea or appreciation for it. Hell, sometimes I wonder if ISU fans themselves appreciate it! State of Iowa has extremely challenging demographics as far as building a winning FBS program. State population has essentially flatlined for something like 70 years with TWO FBS programs to support (one of the two, Iowa, definitely hogging most of the glory, historically). Yet, there they are, playing for the Big XII title, damn near a playoff team. Incredibly impressive.
@nickhill934: ISU needs to hang on to Matt Campbell as dearly as it can! Two other guys with The Cyclone Program did very well later on. Johnny Majors won The 1976 Natty at Pitt with Heisman Trophy Winner Tony Dorsett at RB. And speaking of Dallas Cowboys, a former Assistant in Ames eventually became the first Head Coach to win both a National Championship and a Super Bowl. His name of course is Jimmy Johnson. Then there's Matt Campbell himself who nabbed a couple of Rings while helping guide D3 Superpower Mount Union to two of their overall TWELVE Natties in just over three Decades!😂🤷♂️🏈B.W.
@@rydog7920 Glad that you pointed that out as I never realized. You'd also have to include a guy named Larry Lacewell as a branch of "The Jimmy Johnson Coaching Tree." @@ajkI can’t even imagine how chaotic this season would’ve been with only a 4 team playoff, Georgia and Oregon would be locks but there would’ve been legitimate cases for Penn State, Notre Dame, Texas, Indiana, Ohio State, Tennessee, and Boise State to take the last two spots. Knowing how much the committee sucks, though, it probably would’ve been Texas and Notre Dame that got the nod
2:18 I know what that feels like. My alma mater, Augustana in Sioux Falls, SD, was BY FAR the smallest school in the Division II North Central Conference, after Morningside dropped down to NAIA; in the early 2000s, Augie was 1700 students, while the next-smallest, University of South Dakota, was around 7000 & SDSU (yes, the same SDSU which is the 2-time FCS Champion) was around 8000; the largest school in the conference was St. Cloud State with 15,000. Augie just wasn't big enough to consistently compete with the larger schools in our conference in football & men’s basketball. My freshman year, 1997, Augie actually BEAT SDSU in football, & my senior year (2000-01), Augie won BOTH men’s basketball games against SDSU, in Sioux Falls & in Brookings!
The Oregon State streak began when they were a much better program than Oregon. It just took a boycott of players reacting to racist rules about haircuts and facial hair.
It's weird growing up in ACC country that I always think of Duke as the bottom feeder over (under?) Wake Forest. Duke had a 55 year streak without a bowl win. The lows of the 90s/00s were so bad.
I thought for sure that duke would be included in this video, Northwestern not making the cut surprised me too but I guess he can only cover a certain amount of programs before the video gets too long
Me, a Rutgers fan... like the squidward window meme looking out at everyone having a good year and then seeing us be a stupid decision away from a ranked win this year at least...
Kansas State was the worst school in history until Bill Snyder showed up in 1989. First team to 500 losses, 3 winning seasons between 1945-1989, one bowl game in that period, and nearly kicked out of the Big 8. Hilarious that they aren’t mentioned. Lol
I'm not shocked we're the worst PAC team. My parents told me about the streak when I was younger, and how the football program was in serious danger of being canned for a while
Hey Empire glad you were able to get the video out, take time this month and enjoy the holidays. Easily the best patreon I've ever subscribed to man you deserve it. Here's to your continued success brother and happy holidays!
‘97 Iowa State grad here… you forgot to talk about Jim Walden and the worn out rug Jack Trice had for a playing field by 1990. Lot of folks cut Jim slack because he is a nice guy, but I think he should have been fired sooner, as he ran the same play every offensive down. But maybe that’s part of the nature of the option.
After this season of hell for me as a Purdue alum, seeing an IU player being front and center for the thumbnail of a video about worst college football teams ever feels cathartic
Growing up in Bloomington I never ever cared about college football because we were so embarrassingly bad my entire life. This team has absolutely vaulted my interest in CF as a whole and its been great
Like you said, Oregon State has been through this before. Our fan base is beyond loyal, even in down seasons. We had multiple sold out home games this season for a very average team. I think the fans just know there’s a bright future ahead, all things considered
This video made me think of Kansas State. We all know what they did under Dan Snyder, and for the past thirty years or so, they've been a consistently competitive program. But that followed eighty plus years of utter futility, to the extent that they were the statistically worst program in Division I history up to 1989. If they could turn things around, anyone can.
Correction Kansas state is probably the worst of the big 8/12. Petty sure Kansas state is the only conference opponent ISU has a winning record against. Problem is Dan Snyder raised their program from futility decades ago.
Indiana has a good chance to hand that most losses record off to Northwestern in the next couple of years if we keep Coach Cig. Right now IU has 714 losses and Northwestern has 709.
Wake Forest was so beaten down this year, they got boat raced by Ole Miss, and decided that was enough, and cancelled the return trip to Oxford in 2025. I wouldn't say that is rock bottom, but it's pretty damning when it happens
Fun Iowa State fact: Iowa State is the reason a safety gives the ball back to the scoring team. In 1925, while winning 7-0 Iowa State's QB took the snap and ran backwards into the endzone before kneeling and giving up a safety. At the time scoring a safety gave the ball back to the team who had the ball previously, so with a score of 7-2 Iowa State took the ball back, and proceeded to use this strategy to burn off time and run the clock down before eventually winning 7-6. The rule was changed the following season
Just for context, Magic Johnson had a talk show called "The Magic Hour" back in the late 90's. It was cancelled after 8 weeks due to poor ratings. What were those ratings you ask? 2 million viewers per night. those were raw viewers not differentiated by a demographic group, but I'm more than willing to bet that he was getting at least two to three times what current late night shows are getting currently in the key demos.
Great video as always but i feel like this year is an anomaly personally for the smaller schools. My reasoning being I'm an Arkansas fan for now at least they try my patience thats for sure but unfortunately with this new era of NIL it's making schools like ours become feeder teams for the bigger schools in our conference. Essentially Arkansas Kentucky and Vanderbilt may do well one year and seem to be building momentum but with players being able to transfer every year it makes the best players from those teams seek better deals with Alabama Georgia Lsu Ole miss etc. Ultimately leaving us high and dry and having to rebuild year after year. Arkansas alone has seen close to 30 trasfers and while some may say its a culture issue and that may be true. We're not the only ones experiencing that I believe teams like Kentucky are as well. So it seems to just be the influence of NIL and the transfer portal in my opinion at least. Don't wanna make this seem like I'm hating on your opinion I think you make the best college football content personally.
I would say a honorable mention belongs to the Rutgers Scarlet Knights .492 all time Winning %. Yeah Vandy had some good seasons with James Franklin at the helm which is how he got the Penn St job.
Pop Warner coaching at ISU was a twist 🤯 Also, I had no idea that ISU is considered the worst team the original seven Big XII schools! I mean, even better than Kansas??
