Sir you left out the most important step to this classic Geechee dish, the butter bath for the rice 😂 I grew up eating this, brings back memories.

I like it. Reminds me of school lunches in North Charleston, SC circa 1981.

Born and raised in Charleston and never had red rice "sweet" but I'm going to give this a try! Nice work!

Thank you for sharing your version of red rice! It looks delicious. I'm from Charleson and family and friends also use bacon and tomato paste (very savory). *Everytime you said "Like so" I heard Tabitha Brown's voice. 😁 God bless!

It looks great, I’ve never had it with sugar but I know my mom used tomato paste and all of your other ingredients (she added a whole box of Rogerwood sausage and 1lb of thick cut bacon, and when I say thick I mean look at anyone of your fingers and cut it in half and BAM there u go lol) I do have one question for you and everyone else, why is corn the perfect vegetable for red rice? I’ve tried red rice with every vegetable but corn sets it off lol

My thoughts would be the sweetness of the corn. Anytime I have a tomato base anything, a little sugar or natural sweetness complements it well.

The Gullah, Geechee people never use any tomato paste they use water and tomato sauce. 24 oz of tomato paste and no diced tomatoes even from a can. I hope you like your recipe.

Thanks for the tips! We love the recipe here in the SC lowcountry.

It is low country Gullah food it doesn't belong to the entire South at least that's not who or what created it. It was created off the coast of Georgia by the above mentioned people. It should never look like Spanish rice or jambalaya. :-)
