What would you suggest for trigger thumbs? It’s been frustrating to splint (because of the limited choices) and the steroid injections offered moderate and very temporary relief. Getting a referral for a hand surgeon from rheumatologist.
@@pdx_fashionista I have a video with some very effective trigger thumb exercises here- th-cam.com/video/6vjzXX7YUAs/w-d-xo.html.. Did you catch that one yet?
My thumb is triggering but you did not demo any of the exercises for it specifically like the other fingers. Tried to follow but thumbs are positioned a little differently.
thanks, I overused my hand working on a website and my middle finger started catching 2 days ago just a little, now it is catching more this morning. I am trying everything, because I have to play the piano this Sunday! I use my hands for work and this is painful and frustrating! Thanks for the video. Going to ice now!
Thank you! I had a trigger thumb on my left hand that would trigger daily and a trigger middle finger on my right hand that would trigger only occasionally. Your videos helped me cure my trigger thumb completely and now I’ll follow your instructions for treating my finger. Your information given in videos has been so helpful.
Terrific video! You are an excellent presenter. I’m a retired hand therapist with trigger finger. I stumbled over your video and decided to watch, wondering if there was anything new in the world of TF treatment. I have now added the web space massage and the isometric exercise to my treatment routine. I can already tell a difference. Old dogs can learn new tricks!
You have provided just what I needed - in a way that I can understand and repeat all of your suggested treatments at home. I have a trigger finger on my right hand ring finger. It causes pain at the MIP which extends down the back of my hand.I have been following your suggestions and feel great improvement. As we get older, age can do a lot of damage to our hands. Arthritis is a terrible burden and the accompanying aches and pains are hard to bear on a daily basis. I look forward to future sessions with your postings, leading to increased flexibility and strength. Thank you.
I'm glad I found your videos. I just confirmed that what I have been experiencing is TF on the middle finger. My friend had a thumb TF and I remembered so started researching. She had surgery. I do not want to have surgery.
I LOVE YOU!!!!i tried alot of stuff people said to do and they all failed till i found you!thank you soooo much! and its only been a little over a week.

interlacing web spacing in between fingers and squeezing both hands tight, helped my middle finger locking and popping problem instantly go away. I use a wok to cook food and my middle finger starts to pop and lock for 7 weeks. after trying your technique my problem went away instantly. Thank you so much, Michelle.
Thanks. Hand specialist I saw last Friday said there are NO exercises for trigger finger. The only treatment is up to 2 cortisone shot and then surgery. And then she gave me some exercises for other hand problems and one of them causes my fingers to trigger - so it sounds like I should stop doing that exercise! I'm hopeful that your exercises will help since I'm only about stage 2.
Interesting. What your hand specialist said ties in with stuff I've read, so it would be interesting to hear what Michelle has to say about those other (on the surface, more radical) solutions. I'm not even sure splinting has actually been shown to be efficacious. It's all a bit difficult for the ordinary sufferer to navigate.
Thank you for this video! I got trigger finger recently this week, I think because of my work, but I have been looking for things to help. My first thought was a splint, so I am glad I'm on a good track.
This was a great video! Thankyou. I’ve developed a nasty trigger finger issue with the middle finger of my left hand, just like you show taped up in your video. It’s darn painful, so I really appreciate your instruction.
So glad you posted on TH-cam. I’ve had 2 cortisone shots in my right ring finger. The pain and trigger are coming back. I also notice that it’s a bit painful on the palm side under the finger. I’m going to try your exercises. I’ll also look for a hand surgeon in my HMO. However, I want to avoid surgery if at all possible.

When I worked part time in the packing dept of a warehouse while in college I developed trigger finger. What worked for me was immobilizing my fingers at the knuckle after I got home from work and while I slept. It took a while but I eventually got to the point where my finger wouldn't catch. The other thing that helped a lot was simply keep my joints warm. Either resting my hands in warm water or, when I was at work, running warm water them in the sink.
Interlacing web spaces and squeezing hands tight helped the pain go away in my middle finger ! Not trying to make a fist now… will wait some time and do suggested exercises for my trigger finger. Thank you!!!!!

I'm excited to try these exercises. I've had trigger finger for about a year now. So far, no pain but don't want it to get to that point. Will definitely let you know which of the exercises worked best for me. Thank you so much!
Thank you so much. The exercise tips 3-5 were extremely helpful for my trigger thumb. I had elbow replacement in January 2021 and for maintenance went to a chiropractor in my new location for scar tissue reduction treatment after moving out of state. Sadly in the process the chiropractor activated thumb irritation causing my thumb to trigger. I had left the state and suffering for 3 months as I was unable to follow up with the chiropractor or my original hand care providers. I did manage a break when I was able to return to my original occupational therapist during a quick visit back to my original location where I had the surgery. (Sadly I had moved out of state and was unable to follow up on the problem with my original physician and therapist who are awesome hand specialists). Your exercise tips 3-5 relieved the pain immediately. I am so very thankful to you for providing these exercises online. Thank you again for your very clear and professional presentation on these exercise tips.
Thank you so much. In the absence of a brace your video gave me the idea to cut the fingers out of an old glove and place a ball in my palm to prevent me from making a fist and triggering my ring finger. I have a 3 month old Golden Retriever puppy and teaching him to walk has become a triggering nightmare! This way I can firmly hold the leash without triggering my fingers.
Good morning, thank you very much for this demonstration, am having this problem and was awaken by the pain then decided to search and find some solutions, then I made a click and go through with you and I liked the demo
I tried everything and ended up taking a foam roller , spit it and just taped around for size. No tape going down, no uncomfortable hard splint. It worked great!
Hi ! Thanks for the video. I really learnt a couple of new things. I noticed that the pencil exercise causes my finger to still lock. I tried it so many ways. Ironically if it is just to exercise the finger then the splint actually suffices for limited movement. My finger gets really really stiff in the morning but it eases off during the day mostly and comes back when I want to rest. Just started the splint a day ago.
I've been suffering with trigger finger on both thumbs for over 6 months. I never knew it would be as detrimental and painful as it is. I've cried from the pain. I've had a cortisone injection, and it didn't help at all. Now on to surgery on April 6th. I will try these exercises first. Thank you
@Angela H it didn't, and I am miserable. My doctor (hand surgeon) was in network for my insurance, but the only place he performed the surgery at was not in network. I found out only 2 days before I was supposed to have the surgery. Now I need to find a hand surgeon that can perform the procedure at a hospital that is covered my my very expensive and private insurance. 😭 Are you suffering from this?
@@Denise_Suzanne I saw two Doctors today and yes they offered an injection, but also said I'd more than likely still need surgery. I'm going to talk to a anesthesiologist in two weeks to see if they are OK with getting the surgery being I have several issues after Covid.
Thankyou for these videos. I didn't know what was wrong with my hand. The pain was unreal in my middle finger. I made a splint from a finger splint folded open an wrapped/taped to my hand with vet wrap.
WOW, great video!! what a difference treatment number three made for me. I tried it and my ring finger is now more relaxed. I will continue all exercises until up to 8 weeks and see if it goes away. Thank you Michelle you are the best @Vitualhandcare
Hi.. thanks so much for yor range of eexercise and detailed presentation. It's very important to know what os happening inside the hand to know if it,'s going right. Oi have 3 trigger fingers both middle finger and my right ring finger so I'm doing # 5 interlacing my fingers. Massage would be more effective but my hands get very tired.
Thank you so much for this! I had trigger thumb last year, got one shot which helped, but only for 30 days. Then I found and followed your exercises religiously and used the oval splint. With much patience it eventually completely healed after 6 weeks and still hasn’t returned! However, now I have trigger finger in 2 fingers, 😩I’m so glad I have your videos to turn to.
Thank you for a very good, well explained video. I used to do the isometric exercise on my ring finger every so often and it always worked. I prefer exercise options, but to each his own. Thank you again.
Hello Miss Michelle! Thank you for your videos they are all so helpful! I was diagnosed with thumb trigger finger and tendonitis on my hands two years ago. However, my fingers in hands continued to swell and now I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis in the begining stage. I am 30 years old by the way. Also my index finger 👆 has a swan neck deformity and a ganglion cyst. My wrist of the same hand hurts too 😂. My thumbs have again trigger finger. Now I am taking some pills. However, none of my doctors do not explain to me if my swan neck deformity in my index finger can be fixed since it has also a ganglion cyst. Is there any chance to bend this finger completely again and fix its swan neck deformity? I am a little bit desperate. Maybe I am overdramatic. Thank you in advance. Your channel helps me and many other people. 😊😊
I appreciate it all the exercises for the four fingers, but I have trigger finger of the thumb and I didn't see one exercise for that. Would you cover that topic as well
Thanks, that has been very informative. I bought some Oval Eight splints on Amazon. First time I mistakenly thought my finger was larger than it was, so they were all too large. Second time I got a set with far more variety, and started wearing a 10. That worked, including getting me through a night's sleep, but when I used my had it tended to fall off now and then. And the last time it came off, I lost it. So I went back to the second set and put on a 9. That is working, and doesn't seem as prone to falling off. Which brings me to the only reason I have anything to say. I went back to Amazon to get some backups, which is to say more size 9. Each of the sets, which had 8 and 11 each, cost $10. A single size 9? $13! A pack of five? $36!. Cheaper to buy assortments. I found a set for $5 that includes some bits of padding to adjust the fit. Yes, I understand the economics of inventory, sales and shipping a specialized item mean they won't ever be really cheap, but I found the situation amusing none the less. Anyway, thanks again.
Thank you very much for your generous advices. I just found them, after I had a surgery a month ago. My finger still triggers, less but still does. I think I will try to do the exercices you recommend, even if I had this surgery, what do you think? I must say that I was doing a few things you firmly recommend NOT to do to try to recover. So, thank you again for your videos.
I've been following along on several of your videos for trigger finger of the ring finger on my dominant hand. I believe they are helping. A few days ago, however, my PCP sent me for hand x-rays, and I was diagnosed with erosive arthritis, so now two different issues or most likely related? I can't get an appointment with a hand specialist for about two months. I plan to continue with the trigger finger exercises, since I think they can only help. I'm going to look for more of your videos to see if there's a connection between the two conditions.
Very helpful - I love this video. It is clear. I took down notes and I will apply it. So patient and clear in the explanation and thorough. I will be working on this to apply to my fingers for now. I have the right hand Middle Finger and a left hand 4th finger. So thank you so much for this wonderful video!!
I have been getting worse trigger fingers on both hands ever since last year when my friend bought me an Android phone. My ringer finger on right hand is the one most holding the phone and my index finger left hand is sore and the ring finger on left hand also wanting to trigger. I hold a stylus in my left hand for poking keys and screen on Android held in my right hand. I have been massaging both hands and using hot compresses ... and now watching your videos. I will be doing the facecloth folded. I am ambidextrous so my hands get equal stress. Surprising that after 40 years of working as a statistical typist, I don't have carpal tunnel in either hand! Maybe my fingers are rebelling ... or maybe just the holding and poking of the Android. I will do as many of your exercises ... and report back. Thank you very much! - it does not hurt to type ... 95 wpm with words and 125 wpm with numbers. I'm in my 87th year and do also have arthritis; and have had gout flares in both feet!!!
Is there any development of your trigger finger doing her advise and which one is effective...i've suffered my middle finger in my right hand..please do tell me..
Terima kasih dokter. Semoga dengan adanya latihan ini penyakit trigger finger saya hilang dan kembali normal. Thank you doctor. Hopefully with this exercise my trigger finger disease will disappear and return to normal.
My left middle finger began catching occasionally a few years ago and has progressively gotten worse since then. I chalked it up to getting older and early arthritis. I woke up this morning with it locked in full flexion. And I mean locked. I am actually a licensed PTA which puts me at a slight disadvantage with hand issues however, I know quite a bit about inflammation relief. My wife immediately tried recommending heat but I knew ice was required. I just didn’t know where to use it. I never would have guessed at the base of the finger where it joins the palm. As soon as you described it, all of my hand anatomy started coming back. 5 minutes with ice caused my finger to release so effortlessly that I didn’t even realize that it straightened until I looked down and saw it. Thank you so much! I will begin with your recommended exercises which I love how you presented from a clinical standpoint. I’ll likely plan to see a hand specialist since this has been a chronic and progressive issue. Thanks again!
I'm hesitant to use ice as its WARMTH that seems to help my trigger thumb (Washing dishes, warm shower, etc). But, perhaps I should try ice which seems counter intuitive since the thumb feels kind of "frozen" to begin with.
@@usaman7358 As a licensed PTA, we were taught as well as the research overwhelmingly shows that heat is to treat sore stiff muscles and cold is for joint and soft tissue inflammation. Most people think heat is good because we’re warm blooded animals and heat “feels good” but it increases blood flow which lead to more inflammation and in the case of trigger finger, you absolutely want to reduce inflammation. Finally, both heat and cold should be for 15-20 minutes at most per hour but you can alternate them back and forth without concern.
Hi, gr8 help, love your video. I get nice relief sleeping w splint at night on trigger finger, middle. I wear the neoprene type finger sleeve. Very comfortable. Light, keeps swelling down and I wake up without vent finger ir pain
I am an older gentleman soon to turn 83, whose trigger middle finger of the left hand started suddenly, with no apparent cause, 2 weeks ago. This morning I saw a hand specialist who recommended minimally invasive surgery (ultrasound-guided trigger finger release). I have great confidence in my doc, and I am willing to undergo surgery if absolutely necessary, but whatever the ailment (and I've had many over the decades) I always try to see if there are non-surgical alternatives to try before getting cut. Browsing the internet I ran across a few of Michelle's exercises, tried them out, and plan to try them for a few weeks before deciding whether or not to have surgery. Thank you so much, Michelle; keep up your excellent work and presentations. Note: I am a psychologist, not an M.D., so I recommend that readers of my comments consult their doctor or health care provider to identify their particular medical issues and appropriate treatment(s).
Hi did you have the invasive surgery? I have developed tigger finger in my middle finger and I play violin which now think I will not be able to do. I have not seen a Dr just trying different exercises.
Thanks for the tips. I will start doing those exercise as i have done medication and two shots of steroid on my ring finger in the last one year but the problem has not dissapeared totally. I hope this will help.
The one with the pencil really works for me.. thank you so much..iv been on tf for about 6months now and cannot really do my job well.. mine is the ring finger that is locking spevially in the morning were it bended and It is soo much pain trying to straigthen it
I have Charcot-Marie-Tooth and am losing mobility of right hand. I cannot sign accurately with right hand now. am getting locking in several finger joints. people don't realize how important even one finger is until you lose function of it. thanks for instructive videos
Thank you for this video. I’ve had trigger finger for a couple years now, have had one cortisone shot, and was weighing the option of another shot, as the pain and locking has come back and is getting worse. I’ve watched all the traditional exercise videos and they never seemed to do anything. Splints and tape kept the finger from flexing to the point it gets stuck, but always felt the pain was worse when I removed the splint/tape. Massaging the pulley area never seemed to help. So when I tried t your #3 exercise, the isometric finger flexi on, I discovered something. I felt a sharp pain in my middle knuckle, and a crackling sound. My issue seems to stem from an old accident that jammed my middle finger , rather than true trigger finger. (The doctor that I saw originally, that gave me the shot, didn’t even really examine my hand just listened to my symptoms, and said yeah, trigger finger. We’ll give you a cortisone shot.) Now I’m going to go see someone else, thank you for showing different exercises, letting me discover something different.
Outstanding work. Thank you. I'm curious if you have an idea what percentage of trigger fingers can actually be rehabilitated without the surgery. I have people telling me that it's "pointless" to try and stretch or exercise a trigger finger back to health, but to go ahead and get the sheath cut to move alone recovery. Curious what your professional experience is with this discussion?
It is NOT pointless! I bet those people that said that haven't read the research. Trigger finger reseach shows that 52% (or more in some studies) can be healed conservatively. Trigger thumb is even better.👍
@@mariawilliams2996 I'm not qualified to give medical advice but I've been doing a lot of reading around this, and it does seem to be the case that the condition can just right itself in some cases.

Appreciate the Superthanks!
good tip to avoid triggering for 1-2 months while healing.. my dr did not mention this after my injections for right middle finger
Thanks, it would also be helpful to hear what activities I need to stop doing.
Thank you this really helped me my middle finger was severely catching but now it is much better. TY
Very helpful, thanks. My trigger is my thumb at the 2 joints . I adjusted your exercises to fit it
Good morning, thank you very much for this demonstration, am having this problem and was awaken by the pain then decided to search and find some solutions, then I made a click and go through with you and I liked the demo
Thanks Doctor!!❤❤
I used it for my thumb..and really I got relaxed!
Now daily I will do these exercises!!❤
Thanks again from India!!❤
I interlaced my fingers and got immediate results. Thank you!❤
Wonderful!
I tried everything and ended up taking a foam roller , spit it and just taped around for size. No tape going down, no uncomfortable hard splint. It worked great!
Thanks Michelle!!! After watching your trigger finger videos, I'm finally on the right track!!!
I just added 2 bandage on my index finger and I used a hand massager, there is some relief!!! Thank you!!
Thank you
How did surgery go?
@Angela H it didn't, and I am miserable. My doctor (hand surgeon) was in network for my insurance, but the only place he performed the surgery at was not in network. I found out only 2 days before I was supposed to have the surgery. Now I need to find a hand surgeon that can perform the procedure at a hospital that is covered my my very expensive and private insurance. 😭 Are you suffering from this?
@@Denise_Suzanne Yes. My right thumb is constantly bent, or popping in and out of place. It's now painful. I'm actually going to a hand surgeon today.
@@ncangie the doctor will likely suggest a cortisone injection. I hope it works for you
@@Denise_Suzanne I saw two Doctors today and yes they offered an injection, but also said I'd more than likely still need surgery. I'm going to talk to a anesthesiologist in two weeks to see if they are OK with getting the surgery being I have several issues after Covid.
Thank you so much for this video. It really helps me a lot . Right now im doing the #5 exercise. God bless
Wow. Literally doing the stretch on a naked finger along with you.. . Which is severely inflamed today. And oh my God it's helping! ❤
I found the 3rd exercise with the towel is the most effective exercise, Thank you so much it is so effective.
Thankyou for these videos. I didn't know what was wrong with my hand. The pain was unreal in my middle finger. I made a splint from a finger splint folded open an wrapped/taped to my hand with vet wrap.
Hallelujah! Thank you, thank you, thank you...excellent video!
Thanksand thanks a lot for your video.God bless you.
Muchas gracias Michelle por tu generosa ayuda. Bendiciones
All of them . . . YOU ~ ROCK ! ! 👍🤛😉
Thank you!! First video that isnt just talking about surgery. Off to buy a splint!
WOW, great video!! what a difference treatment number three made for me. I tried it and my ring finger is now more relaxed. I will continue all exercises until up to 8 weeks and see if it goes away. Thank you Michelle you are the best @Vitualhandcare
That's great! Keep us posted how it goes!
Hi.. thanks so much for yor range of eexercise and detailed presentation. It's very important to know what os happening inside the hand to know if it,'s going right. Oi have 3 trigger fingers both middle finger and my right ring finger so I'm doing # 5 interlacing my fingers. Massage would be more effective but my hands get very tired.
this helps me a lot, i will do the splint, the cloth, the ball and the pencil, thank you for sharing, I decided not go to surgery.
By any chance have you kept up with the exercises after healing or did you stop? Just curious if this is like a life time thing or something.
@@teabags2dayme too. 😢
OMG! All of them help! Thank you, thank you, thank you.
You explain everything so well and eloquently.
You're very welcome!
Thank you for a very good, well explained video. I used to do the isometric exercise on my ring finger every so often and it always worked. I prefer exercise options, but to each his own. Thank you again.
Thank you for helpful coaching, the best video ever for trigger finger treatment ❤️🙏
🙏 you are welcome!
Thank you Michelle for a God Exercises explain by you Thank you Soo Much 👍
Thank you so much, this video #3 and #5 helped me to cure my ring finger trigger finger in a minutes
Thanks Michelle , really effective on the top 3 finger exercises , after doing it I can move my middle finger with much relieve .
Very useful for the trigger finger
Thank you SO SO much Michelle! I love the Oval 8 splints. So easy. Question: What about passively flexing the DIP/PIP joints with MPs in neutral?
Yes! Passive is a must to keep the finger from getting too stiff.
Thank you, you are a professional. It works. ❤️👍
Thank you, I try the treatment tip 4 and 5.
Your God sent. Truly this is a miracle
I LOVE YOU! YOU REALLY SOLVE MY PROBLEM! THANKS IT WORKS
Great video Michelle Have a slight trigger on my little finger post fracture. Trying to work it out, your videos have been extremely helpful
hey any update, i just recently got trigger finger on my pinky on my right hand, starting exercises with it now.
Thanks, I will start doing the exercises today¡
Fantastic video
Very helpful - I love this video. It is clear. I took down notes and I will apply it. So patient and clear in the explanation and thorough. I will be working on this to apply to my fingers for now. I have the right hand Middle Finger and a left hand 4th finger. So thank you so much for this wonderful video!!
Let us know how it’s going!
thank you very much,
I have been getting worse trigger fingers on both hands ever since last year when my friend bought me an Android phone.
Thank you so much, very clear and informative where can o purchase the hand/finger splint?
@@ezpeteytThanks!
Thanks again , I’ll let you know of my improvements very soon 🎉🎉
Thanks for the tips. I will start doing those exercise as i have done medication and two shots of steroid on my ring finger in the last one year but the problem has not dissapeared totally. I hope this will help.
The one with the pencil really works for me.. thank you so much..iv been on tf for about 6months now and cannot really do my job well.. mine is the ring finger that is locking spevially in the morning were it bended and It is soo much pain trying to straigthen it
Me too buddy me too
I have Charcot-Marie-Tooth and am losing mobility of right hand. I cannot sign accurately with right hand now. am getting locking in several finger joints. people don't realize how important even one finger is until you lose function of it. thanks for instructive videos
Extremely happy with this helpfull video.. ur too good 👍
It is a nice video, thank you for sharing those five steps! I am wondering if I continue doing those exercise, should I avoid surgery?
@@VirtualHandCare do any ever heal spontaneously with no treatment?
@@mariawilliams2996 I'm not qualified to give medical advice but I've been doing a lot of reading around this, and it does seem to be the case that the condition can just right itself in some cases.
Very helpful video -- much thanx. Have found simple elastic finger wrap very helpful to minimize flexion of trigger ring finger, & promote healing of affected joint.
