    I was hoping for some trippy glitchy nightmare horror game. This feels more like that prosperity path game...

      Alanna Nikol I wasn't expecting that in this stream because I played it before watching Vinny play it, but when I originally played it I was partially hoping for that too because I hadn't read anything about it before.

      Adam Ziakh I guess if you played the game before you kinda knew what it had, although it seems rather disappointing.

  • @Shilag

    There really aren't any choices in this game, unfortunately. You do pick up the same people every time, they say the same things, and your choices really don't matter. The hitchhikers will just ignore what you say, or reply in a single line before continuing their monologue.
    So it's an interesting first experience, but you really shouldn't play it a second time. Ever. Just let it be what it was, because if you look deeper into it it's quite disappointing.

      Shilag This.
      It's a great idea, and seems better suited as a proof of concept for something better, but on it's own, not really THAT great.

      I think that if your choices actually changed the dialogue, this would have been a whole different game. Maybe even a good game.

    • @Shilag
      @Shilag 9 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      cornish guilt Exactly. I would've loved it "as a game" if it had say.. 6-12 hitchhikers that were randomized every run, dialogue options that actually changed the stories being told or perhaps what happened further down the road, and finally having the last choice of driving onwards or heading into the city make *some* sort of difference (no matter how minimal).
      As it is, it was almost not even a game, but it was still somewhat pleasant in an eerie way.

    For all that people don't like about this game, I really enjoyed it, and I'm glad to see people like Vinny at least giving it a little bit of exposure. I know it's not an amazing, polished experience, but it has a couple of core ideas that are really cool. If you don't mind, I'm just gonna talk a bit about what I liked.
    1. It took a completely different approach to interactive stories in that it wasn't really even that interactive. (which, yeah, if you're looking for a real "gamey" game, probably comes off as pretty shitty) Throughout, much like the proverbial hitchhikers, you're really the one who's being taken along for a ride, getting to see the different passengers and hearing their stories, which all actually ask some hard questions. The only real choice you make throughout the game is the one at the very end, which I'll get to later.
    2. I see a lot of people talking about how this is just another "2edgy2deep" wannabe philosophy game, but that's not really how I see it. I don't see this as a confrontational, "oh you're so dumb for thinking god exists ha ha loser" sort of thing, but rather that it just sort of assumes godlessness, and then goes on to outline how shitty that idea can be. It's basically textbook existential questions, but the way the game presents them so matter-of-factly and almost casually is actually really uncharacteristic of video games, just going ahead and assuming that the player is ready and has an open mind and all that hippie stuff.
    3. The music is on-point. On the game's webpage, the creator said that this game was inspired by night drives on the highway, listening to NPR at 2 in the morning and hearing all the unusual, eerie, surreal music that they play at that time of night, and the music used in-game does great things to recreate that feeling.
    4. Finally (yes this fucking block of text is almost over, congrats on making it this far), the final choice in the game. Incidentally, this is also the first real choice besides dialogue options. Throughout the entire game, you can see the two brake lights of a car in the distance in front of you; no matter how much you speed up, it constantly stays at a fixed distance. The car is never alluded to in dialogue or by any visual other than the two constant red lights, leaving the player to assign whatever value to it they want, but usually, they assume that it will become important later on, or at the end, because of the way it eludes you. Then, at the end, as seen in the video, you never do catch up to the car, but instead you have to make a choice. If you've been flooring it, you can still see the car, but if you haven't, the car disappears from view, so you don't know which way it went. Then, within the frame of about two seconds, BOOM! you have to make that choice to stay on, or exit the highway, to follow the car, or go off on your own. Every single person who I've talked to about this game said it was one of the best ways they've been forced to choose in a game before, even though the choice literally has zero meaning and is never revealed to have any even implied results. Here's why I think that choice is so cool; because instead of other games that might tell you up-front, "if you stay on the highway you get to keep playing but the car you were following is gone, but if you exit you find out what the car was" or something like that, and then it would be up to the player to take the decision from there. But in Glitchhikers, again, the choice is only presented, without any idea what the results will be, leaving it up to the player to assign any value they'd been giving to following the car or discovering new places and put those values into the choice, making it that much more natural and organic, something that a lot of other games, even great choice-making games like the Walking Dead, fail to do. It takes something that is in the end meaningless, and conditions the player throughout to assign meaning to it through repetition.
    Okay, fuck. If you made it here, well done. Thanks for listening to my ramble.

    • @fruitsalad5802
      @fruitsalad5802 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      and yeah, it could be said that the decision at the end says something about the player, but again, that depends on what value they assigned to the car. is the car what's making all these crazy hitchhikers appear, or is it symbolic of achieving answers, when all you've really gotten from these dialogue trees was questions?
      I know, I'm starting to disappear up my own ass with pretentiousness, but I think it's really interesting.

    • @kattyberg246
      @kattyberg246 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I think a lot of these "haters" just don't have the wonder in their minds to understand it. It isn't a philosophy game, its a game that makes you just sit down and think about what the universe is like by giving you choices and giving you 'aliens'. You just need to have an open mind enough to imagine what you think the universe is, as well as what that says about you as a person.
      It isn't pretentious, it's a conversation starter.

    • @spyrellephea1105
      @spyrellephea1105 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      technobarry I totally agree with you, within this thing, yeah, let's call it a thing, I really didn't see much pretentiousness, it didn't seem to be trying to shovel things down your throat, I applaud this game for nailing it's atmosphere, because if people were actually keeping their minds open, they could see that every character wasn't just spouting pretentious nonsense in a desperate plea for you to have some deep revelation, they were more just talking to you like the odd strangers they were, about a bigger picture and infinite possibilities etc. it's that kind of talk you just talk about... I don't know, I'm not very smart, but I know that I just kinda liked this.

      It was really just nonsensical gibberish from pseudo-philosophical kids that want to be deep, without having the depth of mind to actually go that deep.

    • @a.dykeman1980
      @a.dykeman1980 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's not really vapid, just... surface-level. Boiled down to the simplest questions, the ones we all ask ourselves when we gaze at our navels, because ultimately this game is just a fairly simple navel-gazing experience. It's a simple emulation of a late-night drive on an almost-empty road, an experience that can get you thinking things you normally wouldn't think and pondering things that don't really need pondering, boiled down to a fairly linear twenty minutes of the kind that only walking simulators can rival in stretching the definition of a "game".
      Ultimately, you're a victim of expectation. If you people knew you were in for a shallowly but hopefully philosophical linear experience that can only give you the impression of a transcendental experience, you might not be so annoyed by it.

      Adam Ziakh "99.9% of people that claim to be atheists don't know anything about it."
      It's 1 statement, do you believe there's a god or deity? If not then you're an atheist; really not much to it.
      " I however, am agnostic."
      Do you understand what you're talking about? agnosticism doesn't "sit" by itself, it's meant to be paired with theism or atheism. I personally think Gnostic atheism is quite obnoxious and presumptuous and the other side isn't much better in that respect.
      If you really wanna be in the "middle",just be a deist.

    I AM GAMUR
    I HATE ART

    GAMEPLAY AND FRAMERATE ONLY THING THAT MATTER IN LIFE
    A brief summary of the comments on this video.

    • @KrypXern
      @KrypXern 9 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Rogueofmv
      Yeah real great "Art"
      There's nothing wrong with Art, but when its so far up its own ass that it either has to explain to you why it's deep, or you have to interpret why it's deep, because it's just that abstract.
      Because then it's not art. Art doesn't need to explain itself, because the art itself should be explanation enough.
      Also, even if it is art, then it's not a game. Games imply a level of difficulty or some sort of active involvement, whereas the choices in this game are entirely inconclusive. I would call it an interactive short story.

    • @Rogueofmv
      @Rogueofmv 9 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      KrypXern
      "its so far up its own ass"
      Nothing about Glitchhikers is all that deep, nor does it try to be. The graphics are unconventionally stylized (likely inspired by currently trendy aesthetics), the characters are comfortably quirky, and the dialogue is like a chat you might have with a friend on the porch over a beer and a couple cigarettes. It's nothing that's meant to be taken at face value. It's an overall mild and down-to-earth experience by video game standards. People calling shit like this "deep" just because it's not common to storytelling in interactive computer entertainment is simply immature and closed-minded.
      "it's not art"
      I see other people comparing this to the Prosperity Path games. Those are clinically batshit insane by any standard. They have no rhyme or reason to their structure, they're just slapped-together pieces of mismatched puzzles. And they appear to only have been made to sell units and make the creator some money. Those games may not be considered art. This, on the other hand, was a labor of love. The creators went into it with a definite idea, put their heart into it, and ended up with just what they wanted to express. I'm pretty sure that's what art's about. Stop trying to pretend your definition of art is THE definition of art. Now that is actually pretentious.
      "it's not a game"
      It never claims to be (in its own words; the press describes it as a "game", probably more out of convenience than anything), and from a purist viewpoint, I'd agree that it is not. I would call it an interactive short story as well. But why get up in arms about it "not being a game"? Not only is no one forcing you to play it, but if you decide to, it's FREE, so there should be no remorse (especially now that you've essentially seen the whole thing through this video).
      I'm not saying Glitchhikers is my cup of tea, but the regressive nature of the comments on this video (and others I've seen in the same vein) are just disgusting to me, as someone who has an appreciation for contemporary art.

      You mean the game that, in itself, is a work of art? Both the haunting landscapes and lack of companionship give the sense that you're something bigger, part of a story you don't understand and that is just out of reach. For me, that's art.

Honestly through all the "Dippy Dippy Bullshit" I enjoyed it, I liked it's sense of individualism, it nailed what I could see as a good drive, it's an escapist experience, but not intense enough for you to not get locked in your own thoughts. I saw some people in the comments saying that games like this aren't "real" games. Granted, the game doesn't tell you what your goals and objectives are, and user input is somewhat limited, but if those are your qualifications for what a game is, then that is really unnecessarily limiting to the medium as an art form. This game asks questions, which the player then has to answer, both as a character in the game and in real life. That is what makes this game a piece of art: the fact that it forces the player to think and question something in a way that they otherwise might not have. The ending was my favorite part, where you can see the city on the left, and are given an option to either end your journey by taking the exit, or continuing on the road. Without explicitly telling you the consequences of your decision, it's really telling the player about their own mentality. Subtlety like that is really lacking in games, and most games that try to emulate that kind of subtlety end up either failing or being cringe-worthily pretentious, so I'm really happy that this game exists. Also, 10/10 for Carl Sagan.

    • @Arlesmon
      @Arlesmon 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      TheLastAdvacado You're forgeting one factor that makes a game, the risk of losing or the risk of death, and with all of those factors it would be considered a game.
      I'm the kind of person who agrees that videogames can be artistic, however they're good ways in delivering the meaning, and that will depend on the dev.
      Although I'm okay with videogames like this to exist. Because they offer a different experience, but not when it's just games like succulent, where the dev tries to critisize the desired gay male body and not accepting other types of gay bodies, but it ends up being a game of a musical videoesque guy sucking a lolipop. At least glitchhikers tries to do something and last a while longer.

    • @TheLastAdvacado
      @TheLastAdvacado 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      assholemon That's true, and I think that we currently lack a true definition of what makes a video game, so there is room for interpretation within the colloquial understanding what a video game "is". That being said, you still refer to this as being a video game in your statement, and that to me shows that, whatever we might think about what video games are on a conscious level, we still classify this as a video game. I'm not even sure what I would call this game if I didn't consider it a video game. Interactive movie? Interactive experience (pretentious, bleh)? I guess what I'm trying to say is that any conditions we attach to what a video game *is* will just be arbitrary (needs a stated objective, needs win/loss scenarios, needs anatagonist/s, etc.) until there is a clear definition for what this medium is and fully explore what it can accomplish, which could be a long time. In the mean time, any video-based medium that incorporates interactivity is a video game, at least to to me.

At least, that's how I feel.

      @yoshibones 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @giornojoestar4411
      @giornojoestar4411 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      .,.
      Lol, I feel Cerebella deserves everything she gets, as she literally gets anything she wants being a mob girl, and she kills poor Ms. Fortune over something stupid. Even after all this, she gets the ONLY good ending (besides Beowulf, Big Band, and Peacock) while more pure characters get awful endings. (but like her if you want she has cool design and nice hair, besides a cool weapon)
      My favorite is Valentine; I mean, who doesn't love ninjas? Even still, she's also sassy, clever, has a great design and a cool nurse theme, and is totally decisive.
      She needs a better life I feel, as she was forced to create monstrosities like Painwheel under Brain Drain's command, lost all her long-term friends and partners in battle at once, then was forced to kill her old colleagues in the lab by the people who killed her friends, and finally had to sacrifice herself to apologize to Painwheel for her wrong-doings, as it was the only way to end the Skull Heart's influence once and for all. She's pretty much the floor mat of the world, but she doesn't let that hold her down, and still saves the day despite being considered evil. Plus, those blockbusters doe. :3

    • @yoshibones
      @yoshibones 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ivo Robotnik No, she deserves better because she's naive but is sweet inside. She doesn't know what she needs and that's why I feel bad for her. And she killed fortune because she threatened the mafia and that is ALL she has in her life. You can see it start to fuck her up on the last still. This is going to eat away at her- that's no good ending whatsoever. She fucked up and she starts to realize that. Her "family" wasn't worth it.
      The way I sum up Cerebella- not her fault. I have 100% confidence that all your points are moot, honestly. I've yet to see any good arguments against her either. And yeah, a big reason why I like her is because of her awesome design, colors, and kickass attitude. Looking past her flaws of being naive. I also think that in many "potential futures" she would able to get away from that life.
      Valentine probably deserves a better life too but if you're going to inquire, I can give my honest opinion too. Her design reminds me of a sexy halloween nurse costume and nothing less. Not a bad character, but that's totally uninspired IMO. But no hard feelings mate.

    • @giornojoestar4411
      @giornojoestar4411 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      If I pissed ya off, I apologize, that wasn't my intention. I don't think Cerebella is the worst thing to happen to society or anything. I can kind of see your points about her life, and how that would be bad. I just always got the impression she'd just shrug it off at the end and reassure herself that she was ok. In the end, I'd sum it up as this: "Not her fault, but she still has to live with her choices." I feel that way for all the characters, even Valentine, who killed Avian, "father" of Peacock and Big Band, and destroyed their home.
      I just find it cool that in Valentine's story, she discloses that when she did attack the lab, she planted research and documents about Skullgirl behavior and weaknesses, so she tried to make up for her wrongdoings.
      Also, I guess you're right, her design isn't wild, crazy or much new. I just think it's neat how her moves coincide with her design, like her leg crosses used to cut the enemy, and I feel her outfit just looks really solid.
