  • Volkswagen has a bunch of electric cars coming to Australia and the ID.5 is one of them. We had the chance to test drive it in Germany before the ID.5 and ID.4 arrive in Australia mid-2024.

Can we take a moment to appreciate the effort Paul is going to review these vehicles overseas from Australia. I'm looking forward to seeing many more great reviews.

I would take the ID5 instead of a Tesla Y, I purchased a Cupra Born instead of Tesla 3 and I am very happy with that. You can bet that the augmented realty won’t be on the ID5 just like it didn’t come on my fully specified Born. The reason for this is that it requires the northern hemisphere satellite system that cannot be accessed in Australia. I would have loved this on my Born but because we are in Australia it’s not an option. I will consider one of these if it comes fully equiped but I’m not holding my breath. Regarding the drum brakes they work really well on my born as they have put larger disks up front with the sports pack. You don’t see rear disks on a truck and when you consider you’re got 2 tons of car, it makes sense.

Of course this vehicle will have been fully brake tested extensively in the Alps. This is a modern vehicle so I'm confident the brakes will perform impecably.
The other big advantage of drum brakes is that they won't suffer from corrosion the way rear disk brakes do!

These drum brakes can no longer be compared with the old ones from before. In today's concept of electric vehicles, this is more than sufficient, even with a very sporty driving style. Finally, recuperation takes over the majority of the negative acceleration without putting any strain on the brakes. And with this front brake, any criticism is inappropriate anyway.

Wow I'm definitely voting for more reviews filmed at the golden hour. Even a blob as boring looking as the iD5 looked stunning with that light and that deep red paint. Brilliant work as always from Paul, but my god what a soul crushingly boring looking car from the folks who make GTi's.

You seriously reckon that the id5 is a blob????
So what do you think of the frumpy Tesla Model Y ???

    • @shakeelali20
      @shakeelali20 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@Nicholas.T I think very little of it, except for the dozens I have to see in my suburb daily. Just because Telsa is the undoubted leader in EV's doesn't mean they get a free pass in my books. The Model 3/Y have very little visual appeal to me, but they make up for it in plenty of other ways.
The ID range is already starting on the back foot IMO with things like those annoying interiors, bland and boring designs, cost cutting measures like the drum brakes, and frankly lackluster efficiency etc. The only way I can see VW making a dent in our market with these cars is if they significantly undercut Telsa on price and go for the Chinese competition, but I doubt that's going to happen when they're happily flogging off $90k Golf's to people with more sense than money right now.

drum brakes are more powerful and have less emissions. But they lose effectiveness when the heat up, and this is less of an issue on electric cars that use regerative breaking

A shade? So first we add a problem for no reason whatsoever and then try solving it? How about making the utterly idiotic glass roof a paid for OPTION only? Half of people do not care about stupid glass roofs AT ALL. The other half who THINK they like the idea, realize after 1st week that they have ZERO use of it too.

    Great work Paul.
This car imo (and major markets like Europe/US/China) isn't competitive against MY.
I honest think they need to significantly undercut the $65k MY base price if they are to be in the conversation. But considering that the Born starts at over $60k once you include optional (but essential) interior package just to get heated and powered s eats (amongst a few other additions) I doubt they can achieve this price offset necessary to compete.

VW just changed the whole software and main screen of the ID4. The shifter was moved to a stock. And they changed the motor to give it a lot more HP and a huge bump in torque. This vehicle is DOA.

the car also brake by using its own electric motor so installing drum brakes on the rear wheels is to save money. Tbf its braking distance is quite alright.

VW with electric cars has a historic opportunity to shed the image of the consumption and pollution liars they are best known for, but it looks like they have continued to lie about consumption in this case of electric cars. The wolf changes its coat, but not its temper!

Very, very smart move from Volkswagen with providing 2 options - one with sloping roof and another without it. Sloping roofs absolutely DESTROY practicality of an SUV. Severely reduced storage space at the back. ZERO visibility through rear glass. No rear wipers. And the advantage of a sloping roof in aero dynamics is negligible.

VW could be selling the ID4, ID3 and ID5 in Australia for more than double the price they are getting for their EVs in China, and they would still be Australia's cheapest EVs. The ID3 retails for $16kUS in China, about $21k AUD.

Speaking of drum brakes not only put off by burning brake shoes risk of brake failure, prone to rust and unreliable complex mechanics with baneful beyond repairs but should get investigated by the ADR.
