Thanks for the feedback. We have owned the 2023 VW ID.4 Pro S for more than a year now and still love it. The sound system is great, but I am not sure what the complaints he mentioned owners talked about. However, I mostly listen to podcasts anyway, but occasionally I will listen to music and that sounds find. Unfortnately, the infotainment system continues to be hit or miss and easily one the most biggest frustrations of the vehicle I love. Again, thanks, and God bless,
2024 Ioniq 5 is also a great option in this category. I gave up waiting for the ID.4 and bought a Limited trim and love it. Super fun to drive, very fast charging and amazing regen braking controls!
Kyle, I’d love to see a total cost of ownership discussion for all of these cars. When I was evaluating my purchase, the ID.4 had substantially lower cost insurance (even vs.Tesla insurance), parts costs, service network and repair costs (battery cost in particular) and when you do this evaluation, I think the ID.4 is a total winner.
Considering the staggered wheel setup involves different rear and front tire sizes, does this affect the cost for tires since tire rotations cannot be performed?
@@olemissjim sorry, made a confusing post in a rush. The INSURANCE was less than half the price of 3/Y. We have 4 cars and paid $433 a month for 4 months to cover for 6 months. When we got rid of the 2009 GTI for the 2023 ID.4 pro RWD insurance went up to $453 a month for 4 months to cover 6 months. The Model 3 would increase to $630ish a month. If I moved to Tesla insurance I don’t get a multi car and home insurance discount like I get now so it wasn’t a huge savings for a 3 on their insurance. Hope this clarifies.
As an owner of a 2022 Pro S RWD, I am very happy with the car. I road trip it mostly 18 months in and 60k miles. My car has the LG battery and I have gotten 175kw speeds. But the best feature is the driver assist.
Well Kyle thanks for the info. I leased a 2023 id4 pro s for the 200+ range. I use it daily for LUbering(ride share). The riders love car for room and looks. Picked my new AWD Pro S ID4 on June 27 and it started acting 2 days later. The synopsis are as followed. No connection, location on the map is erratic, contently looking for its position as you are driving however, this is not the worst. I was driving uneventfully on the motor way and all of the sudden, the active cruse control slammed the brakes with the following message. Approaching an intersection. The car behind me almost rear ended us. I had to de activate all driving safety feature to prevent reoccurrence. Did any one else had similar experience?
It looks like a great update for the vehicle. However, I love my 21 1st Edition and plan on driving it for a long time. It's a great car for tooling around the city and while not the fastest charging in the land it totally adequate to road trip when needed. In April, I'm going out to see the eclipse in Illinois from DC. I agree with Kyle about the travel assist, it just works.
When we were first researching EVs, we watched quite a few TH-cam videos and learned a lot about the ID4 from Out Of Spec, Kyle and Branden Flasch. So, when we ordered ours, checked every box (except AWD) and absolutely love our 2021 ID4. Just drove it earlier and Kyle's right, it's a welcoming feeling getting in and driving it and really feels like "coming home" from driving our Teslas. Despite all the hate for it online, it really is ust a really solid car overall. Great podcast and video. Thank you...
As an almost owner of a 2022 ID.4 (pre ordered then cancelled), and actual owner of a 2022 EV6 (effectively stumbled into one two years ago), I'm not sure why any EV these days isn't built with an 800V architechture that offers extremely fast DC charging - when you can find it...
Do you know if there is a hardware change or is it only software (infotainment)? If software, can older ID4s get the update? If it is Hardware (probably so for 21 & 22 at least based on previous OTA updates), then this might explain why they did not change lower trim. Probably trying to get rid of older hardware supply. Only a guess but probably better short term to sell rather than write off the loss. Long term with CX, who knows.
@@olemissjim that’s not been my experience so far or in my research. YMMV but I think everyone should form their own opinions based on their own experiences
Kyle: is one of the possible problems with why they didn't update the small battery version is a combination of parts availability, parts inventory and desire to keep a low-cost "base" model?
They've committed to charging at Tesla v3 Superchargers (like all other non-Teslas) sometime in 2025. You'll get an adapter. VWs will start installing NACS ports in their cars sometime next year as well.
This podcast just rolling like a well oiled machine. Great host and Experts as always with the on the money information of the EV Industry, must respect.
And in Canada we get 4 years EC free 30 minute charging, not that is a plus as we have far fewer and even less reliable EC charges than its parent company EA
I would imagine it's a marketing and production decision to not update the small battery cars. The people who don't opt for the bigger battery are more likely to be either familiar with EVs or planning to use it for lower ranges. These groups might be, for different reasons, hesitant to spend a lot of money on a new car, so they're keen to keep the starting MSRP under $40k. And either way, they need to get people in the door first. These seem like substantial enough changes that even if the components and software aren't that much more cost, it might still take time to rejigger things that would introduce cost in other ways. Maybe? lol
Welcome to the team, Fur-antsy! 😊 Great discussion. To me, it seems likely they're just updating the more expensive model first as a classic upselling technique. Are aftermarket sound systems or upgrades a good option for ID4 owners?
yes. they have problems with the machines making the stator. my guess is, that they use the new hairpin winding for the stator and for that you need special new machines. somehow these machines do not work the right way anymore at the promised speed. that means production capacity is in the area of 25% of the intended production speed - which sucks. i hope they get this sorted out because the app550 turns out to be really good.

Lease really is the option in 2024 for any car with a CCS charging port. Use it, try it out and if you like it, give it back and buy the NACS one at the end of your lease. By the time your lease it up almost all EVs will have NACS in the US.

You hit the nail with pricing. Yes, VW NEEDS to come down with their pricing. Especially with the new Volvo EX30 coming with their $35k car. Which I am considering when they're available. I currently have a 2023 ID4 Pro S AWD. It's great but there are some little annoying things. Software hasn't given me any problems but I do hate the interface to dig for what I need. I hate the unlit sliders for HVAC. AND having to tap my profile each and every time I start the car. The mobile app is terrible. Not enough options you can control. Can't even lock/unlock the car from the app. And there hasn't been ONE update on the software since I've owned it which is 15mo now. On a positive note, the car is awesome as far as ride and comfort.
Kyle: apparently we are opposites. I hate sitting low & fell out of a loaner M3. ID4 is now out of consideration as I don’t want to sit any lower than MY. As you said, it is very personal.
He probably meant "sit low" for his comfort level. The actual ride height of the ID.4 sits moderately high for a non-pickup EV, higher than the Ioniq 5
I own a prior version of this car and intended to get another in November. That was until i tried to get the recall work and a state inspection done at aVW dealer. They wouldn't touch the car. After four years or close to it VW still has not trained VW techs to work on this vehicle in all dealerships. And when i called VW they offered no help whatsoever. They could care less about the customer. When i expressed to them that i could no longer take delivery of the 2024 they just didn't care. If a customer can't even get recalls done then why would anyone buy from Volkswagen? I'm done with them. EV service even with Tesla is far from ideal and when you can get work done the process is long and infuriating. I'm going back to a gas guzzling polluting car.
Kyle, you seem to gloss over this point every time: the Blazer and Equinox do not offer Car Play. I (and I believe many other) Apple fanboys would never even consider an EV that does not have wireless Car Play.
Also, VW has informed buyers that the HVAC is currently being replaced by resistive heating again do to shortages. That also is s reason not to buy this car. How are every other EV manufacturers managing HVAC with no problems. Sorry, VW just isn't in the game. The no hands driving only lasts for ten seconds with hands off the wheel. I'm not sure your assessments are fair if you compare to others in this price range.
