How do we speak Hawaiian? What was the coconut man really selling? So much questions you’d think you’re watching an episode of LOST - which by the way, we tried to do, but that, too, cost $200. Hawaii, we’re confused.

    We learned about colonization, general language, we had kumu's (teachers) for language, music and dance. In our university and I'm pretty sure all public schools we learned hawaiian history, and have full degrees on hawaiian culture.
    There are also efforts for cultural site reclamation, rebuilding, and in recent years have increased the amount of hawaiian language speakers. A lot had been going on, and that's just here on O'ahu, where I live.

      @Hipster Chic01 there are many ways, but the easiest way would be through the universities website. Depending on which you pick there will be different courses offered as well. From there the schools registrar or member of academic advising can help you take any courses without actually being a student, if you want. There are also courses offered online as well.

    As a Native Hawaiian who does not speak the language it is largely because of the fact that speaking Hawaiian became illegal and even learning it in school so my grandparents who were fluent never taught it to my parents so then it was never passed on to me. Oh and the people with "grass skirts with blazers" are samoans wearing their traditional attire also with formal wear and I am not Samoan but I've noticed that they wear those outfits for church. I started watching your guys' channel because I wanted to learn more languages and also to travel and it would be interesting to see you guys try and learn Hawaiian to some extent. Love you guys!

  • @thehopeofeden597
    @thehopeofeden597 5 ปีที่แล้ว +128

    It's incredibly sad to realize that, should the current trends and colonial influence continue, most native Hawaiians and especially the Hawaiian language will be cleared out within the next few generations.
    So I think we should all be like Damon and Jo and things like Duolingo and at least try our best to preserve what of the culture we know about, right?

  • @Noheaikamalanai
    @Noheaikamalanai 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    When America overthrown Hawai’i they banned Hawaiians from speaking Hawaiian and our language was lost. About 30-40 years ago is when a group of Makua (parents) decided to make a change and start up school strictly spoken in Hawaiian only.
    Now to the present day more and more locals are putting their keiki (kids) in Hawaiian language school so that it will perpetuate the language.

    I am born and raised in Hawai'i. From what I remember, we were required to learn about Hawaiian history all throughout school. The guy giving you directions, was probably buzzed off alcohol, but his demeanor and the way he was talking is typically how a local, island uncle sounds. And most of them, are the nicest guys you'll meet. The guys you saw wearing the skirts were likely not native Hawaiians, but from Samoa, another polynesian island. They usually wear that attire for church. also GOOD CHOICE with herbivores, they are divine! You are completely right about the missionaries spreading God's word. There are four different types of people on big island, each with their own "section" on the island. Rich white people, mexicans, locals, and hippies. Lastly, I just want to comment on how refreshing it was to watch a video of the island that wasn't filled with girls spinning around in slow motion, underwater scenes, and expensive dinners. You guys have inspired me to "shut up and go" on trips multiple times

    In middle school and highschool here on o’ahu, we have hawaiian history as mandatory. But only one year in each school. the united states illegally annexed the monarchy, and my ancestors were forced to work on the plantations. been a fan of this channel for AGES so its so cool to see y’alls take on my home state. to help clear confusion: 1) yes hawai’i public schools have mandatory courses on hawaiian history, in addition to the standard social studies/american history classes you find at every other american public school. 2) hawai’i has a long history of religious missionaries which is there’s so much christianity, the people in the parking lot with the “coconut man” might’ve just came from church, hence why they look so fly mixing formal collared shirts & blazers with the traditional skirt. all the expensive helicopters/tours/etc. is not the hawai’i that i know & love so props to y’all for going with the flow of the locals, you rlly can’t find a place with more kinder or more welcoming people. 🌈🤙🏼

    Ha-vî-yee (the W is a v sound similar to german)
    There are 2 non-traditional letters in our alphabet the ʻokina and the kāhakou. The ʻokina adds a pause and the kāhakou lengthens the sound (a = short a, ā=long a)
    The proper way to find the hawaiian equivalent of your names would be to go by definition, rather than translating or replacing letter for letter.
    ...and now I need laulau lol

    It truly is upsetting to go to a place and realize that religion there is due to colonialism. I think about places like Mexico and other countries that were colonized and now indigenous religions are small or nonexistent and the religions are mainly Catholic or Christian.

    • @flopunkt3665
      @flopunkt3665 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Catholicism usually absorbed pagan traditions and declared them Catholic afterwards. This happened in Mexico a lot, for instance their fiesta de la muerte is undoubtedly of indigenous origin but when you ask them why they celebrate it they will say "because we're Catholic".
      It already started way back in the late Roman Empire. The reason why the Catholic Church has saints while Protestants don't is because of Roman polytheism. The saints replaced the many different gods and goddesses and up to this day many people especially in Italy worship the saints and the Virgin Mary more than actual God.
      Also the Christmas tree is originally a pagan tradition and has nothing to do with Christianity, they just kept it when the Germanic lands were Christianized around the year 1000.
      The Protestants however are a different story, they split away from the Catholic Church when Martin Luther declared the principle of "sola scriptura", only the written word in the Bible matters, nothing else. Therefore they wouldn't allow ancient non-Christian traditions to live on within the boundaries of Christianity.

    You guys should check out South Point-- there's a super cool cliff-diving point there into very blue waters! And, also, if you don't mind tropical rains, spend some time in Hilo, so you can check out more beautiful black sand beaches like Waipio Valley's to hike to/chill at and Laupahoehoe to view/have a picnic at.

    Since I go to a Hawaiian school here, we specifically have separate history classes, Hawaiian history AND World history, we must take both. Most of us living here in Hawaii have either learned about our history in school or on our own.

    I grew up on O’ahu, and in my school we had three major subject in history that we learned about (American history, world history, and Modern Hawaiian history) but longer terms of American history as it was a full year credit as opposed to Modern Hawaiian history which was a half year mandatory course

    I lived in Hawaii for 3 years (military child) and I do remember in 4th grade, social studies was based on Hawaiian history. We learned about Hawaiian gods such as Pele and important Kings like kamehameha and early colonization. After 4th grade though, it was only U.S history.

    I grew up in the big island so I was in kindergarten in like 2005/2006 and I remember very well being taught words in Hawaiian and songs and throughout all my school years we were taught Hawaiian history very heavily. Also we had a whole semester year in high school when we had to study only Hawaiian history.

    Hawaiian history is a required class in middle school and high school. In elementary school, we are fortunate to have Kumus that teach us many Hawaiian customs and traditions.
    There are private schools that have the Hawaiian culture, language, and beliefs embedded in their curriculum

    Haha... I'd be y'all tour guide if have to. Lol I like that you guys are actually very curious and interested in learning about the hawaiian culture. We learned about the Hawaiian history like the overthrow, the plantation (which brought diverse cultures/population), and the Japanese Internment Camps. I'm sadden the fact that not many schools taught this since US was involved in these things.

    OK DAMON AND JO HERE'S THE GIST: In Hawai'i we do get taught both Hawaiian and US History. Usually in elementary school we are taught Hawaiian studies (we sing the Hawaiian anthem everyday "Hawai'i Pono'i" and learn about the language, traditional games, the Hawaiian Gods and legends, and the kingdom of Hawai'i and the royal family from Kamehameha the First all the way to King Kalakaua and Queen Liliokalani) in Middle and High School we learn about US History and Modern Hawaiian History (consisting of important events in Hawaiian History such as the annexation of Hawai'i *which btw not many tourists or Americans in general know about*)
    History, Culture, and religion are all precious aspects to us Islanders ❤🌺
