So I'm 15 years old and I'm born and raised in Iceland.
Here's a few tips for you people who just want to travel here but don't want to break the bank:
When it comes to food ( Sandwiches)I recommend you to rather buy them at Bónus, Krónunni or Hagkaup. They can be about 4-5 dollars higher in gas stations. They are even MORE expensive in bakeries!
If you want to go out to eat, I recommend gas station foods (like at N1 or Olís), because it's not as expensive as going out to those fancy dinner places. Oh, and touristy places (such as Cafe Loki) are ALWAYS more expensive. Icelanders don't really come to touristy places because we just plain out find them expensive. As a Icelander I've never even been in Cafe Loki, because I know its expensive af!
If you need any candy, snacks or anything else buy them at grocery stores, NOT gas stations. Icelandic people don't buy from gas stations and if we do it's really rare and only because we desperately need the thing we're buying. Because gas station can be open for however long they want they can amp up the prices as much as they can. A chocolate bar can cost 150kr in Bónus but 300kr in N1. For example, Doritos cost 189kr in Nettó, but 400kr in N1. (Nettó= about 2 dollars, N1= about 5 dollars) So if you spend your money in grocery stores, you'll end up saving money.
    Hope it helps

This is true for most scandinavian countries, even pre-made sandwiches in grocery stores (f.ex.) are going to be way more expensive than buying ingredients (especially since they're traveling as 3 people!) and making the sandwiches at home.

    • @hollyjademoore
      @hollyjademoore 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@Ssally_Sskellington Um i live in ireland and sandwiches are like $2, the most expensive one you'd find would be like $8 and that would come with crisps and a drink included....

Rico De Silva I live in London. Avoid places like waitrose and m&s go to tescos or asda for groceries. There are a lot things you can do for free just go onto timeoutlindon. What's really expensive is travel.

Did a road trip all over Iceland for 2 weeks (as broke students) and relied on Bonus for groceries (cans of tuna relatively cheap). Plus we brought a suitcase full of food (dried fruits and bags of oatmeal etc.) from home. At the campsites there is usually free food people left behind, which we took advantage of. After that trip I can never have oatmeal again.... For free coffee go only to the Olis gas station!

I'm suddenly super reminded of being in Norway, watching the other (super obviously) American tourists balk at the prices. (Nowadays they'd probably come to Seattle and feel the same about our prices.)
Still, I hope that $13 bagel was magic.

In Norway, people just don't eat at restaurants that much, so therefore it's more expensive. If you want cheap, good food, you have to buy groceries and make it yourself

    • @sarahria

Haha, I live in Norway and yeah its much more expensive compared to the states. but everything is organic and in the states you gotta pay more for organic stuff and you don't even know how organic it is. anyways most norwegians shop monthly in sweden cuz sweden literally has american prices and a dollar store like its pretty amazing. if you gonna stay in scandinavia i'd say live in norway and shop in sweden lolol

Anyone who is an immigrant brings a ton of their homeland foods with them when they come back or conversely bring a bunch of American things to their families when they visit. Canned or packaged foods are no problem. It’s the fresh fruits and vegetables and/or meats that will get you in trouble.

The bank is where you get free coffee (and sometimes chocolate too)! I have gotten free coffee in the grocery stores, in clothing stores, malls, anywhere BUT where people would think you should get coffee.
And also, I actually ended up cooking a lot of vegetarian food in Iceland, because the meat and fish were not affordable, and Skyr (coconut is my favorite) and AB mjolk (I like half strawberry or pear half plain) are actually pretty good and cheap. Cabbage, potatoes, weirdly enough, vanilla beans (got 2 for $2 once, it made no sense), peas - those are all very affordable, and that's what I ended up eating.
If you can't cook, I highly recommend just going to a bakery, getting a loaf of bread, then going to Bonus, getting some cheese or butter, maybe some arugula, maybe bananas or jelly, whatever you want, and just eating it with bread, and a free coffee at the bank. Since it's always gorgeous scenery outside, I ain't even mad about eating outdoors :)

I went to Café Loki last year on a trip to Iceland and tried the rotten shark and lamb paste. If your hotel provides breakfast, take some to go especially if your going to see the glaciers, hot spots or any hiking adventure. The yogurt different and you HAVE to try the hotdogs with the brown stuff on it. Iceland was never a place I wanted to visit till I actually got the chance to go and fell in love.

I was dreading paying for stuff in Iceland but seriously - we just went to cafes for lunch and dinner after discovering the grocery stores weren't much cheaper and more hassle and ALSO that the cafe food was THE BEST food I've ever had. And ... Iceland isn't that much more than where I live tbh. So that was nice? I'm used to paying too much for everything because the cost of living is high here.
And Skyr? Skyr was my saviour. That's the yogurt that is ACTUALLY technically cheese. And I miss it so much. I had it every single morning for breakfast.

Think about where Iceland is. It's an island that has to import most of what its small population needs. Hawaii is also expensive to live in because it has the same issues, but it's even farther from a large mainland. It's not a highly populous place where a lot of people live on street food: Morocco. Gas stations and convenience stores have the HIGHEST prices for everything. They'll be cheaper than a cafe or restaurant, but everyone knows a supermarket has the lowest priced food. Of course, supermarket shopping means you 'll need to be in a hotel/motel/airbnb with a fridge to store the items and you'll need to be careful about having anything that can spoil. This doesn't make for convenient travel. If you're sightseeing all day, who wants to cook. Sandwiches and protein bars might have to be on the agenda, or bring some of your own before you arrive.

To reply to your final question of the video, Iceland is so expensive not just because most everything has to be imported, but mainly because the tourism industry boomed. It went up 50% in this decade. From 2011, I believe. That much of a growth of people who still need to buy things that don't plan to stay means the economy adjusted that rapidly for everything.
You must have been there around when I was last year! I was broke too because I got my wallet stolen in Germany. I had some money wired in from parents and paid them back, but boy did I have to ration for the time I was in Iceland.
4:07 I peed in that gas station. lololol And ate pizza at that pizza place.

Yup, spent 7 days in Iceland camping and eating peanut butter & jelly sandwiches, cup noodles, and still ended up sooo broke! We splurged at Apotek for an Icelandic meal which was worth it. Traveling around Iceland was an incredible experience. Beautiful country, but an expensive one for sure.

Yeah, I pretty much live off skyr and hotdogs when I'm in Iceland. Bonus is best for groceries, and then if you want to eat out then Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur and Noodle Station, or my new favourite Reykjavik Chips, for are good for cheaper eats.

When I went to Iceland I loved the banana Corny granola bars! I stayed with some friends there, but we kept it cheap by hitting the grocery store a lot. We loved skyr, granola bars and chocolate covered raisins. We also kept it cheap by going to kfc and dominos!

Krónan is the beeeest grocery store in Reykjavik, especially for vegans/vegetarians. I swear I was even able to find Oatly choclate milk, but don't let me get your hopes up. Kaffi Vinyl and Gló Restaurant were favorites of mine, and I remember [at least] Gló being pretty affordable! And a whole lotta foodddd mmm

If you go to Iceland it is almost guaranteed that you will lose weight. I spent a week there and lost about 10lbs...that's not an exaggeration. between the lack of food, nonstop hiking and constant shivering Iceland = best diet plan ever. I recommend bring as much food as you can and only buying food from bonus/ grocery stores. Skyre is also pretty cheap and tasty!

  • @mimi_wandering

I splurged on one dinner in iceland (because it was the only place open at 10pm ha!) but it wasn't as bad as I was expecting really. Probably $50 though. I was there so late that the chef kept giving me free food though haha! But then my airbnb host had filled me in on the grocery store to go to and I got cheap food. The yogurt is amazing omg! and then I tried the hotdogs and such. But it wasn't too bad. I even went to a restaurant down the road from the first one you mention and had a really good stew for really cheap. Also ate in a museum once. It didn't seem like small portions to me or anything. But I mean, more expensive than other places of course, but way cheaper than geneva! I also came from living on an island and had to buy a beanie to keep from dying that was $50 haha! I guess the food was just less than I was expecting (which was insanely high).

I found a few places to eat that served larger portions than those -- like hearty soup served in giant bread bowls for around $16 -- still more than I'd pay back home, but much more worth the money. And Icelandic gas station food was so DELICIOUS compared to North America!

Meron Woldu The bread bowl place was called Svarta Kaffid, and I had a nice breakfast at an American diner style restaurant called Prikid. Both were in Reykjavik but I'm sure there are cheaper options outside the capital!

Also, I try to rent apartments with kitchens. During the great recession when the dollar was worth nothing, I did a month in Paris and a month in Barcelona. I cooked regularly...but always used high end ingredients like Mediterranean seafoods and specialty butters and such...so I felt I was getting the flavor of the country at a pittance!
