Damon and Jo are the cool childless uncle and aunt that you never had but always wanted. You only see them a couple times a year, but they're always sending you weird post cards or anklets from far off places like Bali or Morocco. They just barely make it to your high school graduation and, after a drink or two at dinner, loudly support your decision to major in creative writing against your mother's best wishes.

I feel the same way about using social media too! I deleted insta and twitter in april mostly bc of my finals coming up but also bc i realized too much of my time (almost like 2-3 hours a DAY) has been me just scrolling my feed :( (btw i adopted the shut up and go mantra and signed myself up to go on a school trip to Tibet that's happening next week!!!)
I'm scared to admit the number of hours I spend on my phone... I spend most of my day watching TV shows and movies on it... Not good... 😬
Jo, I leave my phone in another room on silent/no vibration. I check once per day for messages. I don't take it with me when I go out, if someone else has a phone for emergencies. Sometimes I go 3-4 days w/o using it & my clients know to email me bc I'm more on the computer. YOU WILL FEEL SO MUCH BETTER if you go days w/o it or IF ANYTHING put it on silent.
Hard to connect with the organic (nature, other people, animals) when there is an inorganic object in your face all day. Ditch the phone and let the peace sink in 🌴🐬🐚🌺🌋🌏 #ShutUpAndGo💨

I went interrailing solo a few years back. I'd say with absolute confidence that it was best month of my life so far. Have an amazing time and stay safe

phénix Thanks! I'll be visiting friends and family in paris and berlin. Probably visit amsterdam and vienna too. Lastly I'm going to tour Italy, visited Rome before and eager to return.

Jo's *completely* right. Studies have shown that if a phone is in the room when strangers meet, even if it's off, the strength of their connection is negatively impacted, they don't mesh as well on average (ergo, phones affect our ability to socialize). They have shown that having a phone in a subject's vision reduces their ability to concentrate and focus (bad news for everyone!). And having a phone beside your bed reduces the quality of your sleep, I'm guessing because of the association with notifications, emails, texts, working, watching, playing. And last but not least, taking pictures of everything with your phone literally signals to your brain that you don't need to remember it because it's stored elsewhere.
We all need to learn to leave our phones behind. I need to.
I deleted instagram for one month this april... and I FEEL SO MUCH BETTER! I don't constantly think about other people's lives anymore, I don't feel like I have to take pictures of everything all the time, I CAN JUST LIVE LIFE! My brain feels much lighter.

Locals don't really want to tell you where any of the good spots are because everything is already being flooded by tourists. Don't bother coming to Oahu, you can barely find a spot on the beach. Maui is starting to become another Oahu with big businesses moving in. Big Island and Kauai are still not effected by the tourism industry as much, but don't expect much. If you do end up finding a sort of secret spot, please keep it secret

WAIPIO IS LITERALLY THE BEST PLACE ON EARTH (btw you CAN hike down to the beach, it's very steep but also, extremely worth it. I did it, and getting to the water and swimming there was probably the best experience of my life)
itsleviosa YES when they said they wanted to hike I was like....guys go for it. You can also take a tour down, but hiking is so much better! Waipio is amazing!

When I went to Cuba and I didn’t use my phone for the first few days because I couldn’t figure out the internet situation. Once I got an internet card I was on my phone for an hour posting and communicating with people but I just felt so gross and gloomy afterward and my whole mood shifted.
After that I tried to limit my phone use and leave it behind most of the time. It felt soo much better to just carry my camera around
to capture moments.
Since that trip I don’t use social media as much and I no longer converse through text. Instead I set up a hangout and catchup in person instead. It’s helped me schedule more face to face time with friends rather than keeping up with them online.

Y'all should go to North Shore in Oahu. I know it's probably too busy for your liking but they have so many beautiful waterfalls, cliff jumping, fruit shacks on the side of the road, etc. the north shore in very chill and there's a public beach we're LOST was filmed!

You can hike down to waipio valley or drive down if you have four wheel drive. It's also not too hard to hitch hike down and up from the valley. There's a decent amount of locals as well as tourists coming up and down pretty frequently.
