Thank you all for sharing your experiences, wisdom, questions, and supportive comments. After over two months from this video coming out, I feel safe revealing more details of who I am. My name is Jonathan Choi. I went to MIT for college and studied Biology (course 7) then went to Duke University School of Medicine and stayed at Duke for my neurosurgery residency. I then took a job in private practice spine neurosurgery in Monterey CA, then a second job doing trauma neurosurgery and spine surgery in St Paul MN, before finally working at my third job doing spine neurosurgery in Bellevue, WA. I live with my wife and my dog Doobie in the city (Seattle greater metropolitan area) and spend as much time as I can camping and backpacking in the mountains and coasts of Washington. When I’m at home, I’m making these videos and trying to eat healthy, exercise, and work on my mental health. These are the things I saw the patients who heal well do. You can learn about these things in more detail in my video playlists “Help your body heal” and “Five a day.” I am grateful for being alive and coming to this place in my life. There is a follow up video called “I betrayed myself” to further explain my decision to leave medicine. I hope my experience and the sharing of my story help you love yourself and, in turn, love those around you ❤✌️
Hello! My name is Brady Swanson. You performed two spine surgeries on me nearly 10 years ago. I think I was one of your first patients! At the time I was living in so much pain, and I was young when you did the surgery on me. 20! Your kind words, and attentive nature always made me feel comfortable with going forward with the procedures. It was tough to make the call to get the surgeries, but I trusted you. You always showed me kindness and were there with me. I have gone on to recover from the surgeries, and the spine injury and have lived a very active and fulfilling live. Now 30, I've cycled across America, Taught Skiing in California, and New Zealand. I've become a schoolteacher, and have lived a very active life. Thank you for the kindness you showed me 10 years ago. Your videos have been so wonderful, and your voice sounded so familiar. I'm so happy for you. Always, -Brady Swanson
In summary, Gooby, a former neurosurgeon with 20 years of training and experience, left his career due to dissatisfaction and ethical concerns about the effectiveness of his work. He discovered that lifestyle factors like diet, exercise, and stress management were more crucial for patients' recovery than surgeries, which often did not address underlying issues. Gooby struggled with the realization that the medical system was not set up to promote true healing, which led to ethical conflicts and a sense of being stuck in a job he no longer believed in. With his wife's support, he decided to quit his job, despite having no clear plan for the future, to avoid continuing a life that was making him unhappy. He started a TH-cam channel to document his hikes and time spent with his dog, finding solace in nature and aiming to cherish the moments with his pet while exploring new possibilities for his life.
I was skeptical, because he said he was educated at MIT, which does not have a medical school. 🤔 After reflecting on his story and watching a few more of his vides, I think he is on the up and up, and now am a believer. 🐶
Finally, a doctor that has the balls to not only say what other doctors are thinking but also cares enough to not continue to be a part of the problem. in my book, you are more of a doctor now than ever. You speaking out like this may help spark change, who knows. Thanks for sharing.
Doctor professors said it to us physiotherapy students. Many lectures would start with how much they liked physiotherapy, and also personally types that attracted physiotherapy studies. I actually quit halfway through because I sort of didn't want to live in a city, and it was more complicated than that, but I was happy that I was closest to be taught health and not sickness. The old name we still use informally in Sweden for hospital is "sjukhus" which means sickhouse. The emphasis is just wrong from the start. I actually heard George Harrison talk about this on an interview before I went into studies and before understood it as well as I do know, but I remember it well, and knew it was worth thinking about. You could find it still because it's one of the more famous interviews near the end of his life but before he was sick, and where he played some guitar and such. He said the problem with Doctors is that they are taught about sickness, not health. We should focus more on health. As simple as that. I have been thinking about this for a long time. Especially physiotherapist learnvery much about the alternatives to surgery. Doctors and orthopedics is one thing, but chiropractors who use manual therapy even more into not solving root causes. One person who I learnt from was a chiropractors who learnt this, and learnt to love physiotherapy and nutrition and so on. I also grew up on Swedish country side. Pretty populated but far from synthetic lightes, who btw makes my depressed. I can't escape nature more than intermittently, it seems. I just went out from being an elite road cyclist for an excuse to move at a comfortable endurance pace for 4 hours through rural Swedish landscapes half the days of the week. I felt how that served the primitive human needs we all have, but I luckily found my connection to at around 22yo or pretty much as a kid with my dad. I also found out that doing decently dangerous training on slippery winter roads or occasional racing and making heart race to a new maximum also drained me of stress. Like many people miss out on. I just came out of my first year since, and I have been lazier now; too lazy. I realised this halfway through. Push your body's limits both for stress and rest to feel the right distance to your limits, which makes you more comfortable in the middle.

You did something 99.9999% of people would never be able to do (become a neurosurgeon) and now you're doing something 99.9999999999% of people would never be able to do - living a fulfilling life.
WRONG you are an order of magnitude out. Roughly one in 100,000 becomes a neurosurgeon in thr US which means 99.999% either cannot do, or don't do for whatever reason.
Just throw away my almost full pack of cigarettes while watching your video. I will give a notice that I am leaving my job as a proposal developer at the biggest Clinical research organisation. I will be more active and have more time with my 6 years old Belgian shepherd. I will stop eating trash and I will find a job just to support my monthly needs and nothing more. Thank you, brother. @@KeillaSellay idk faith in god has been manipulated all throughout history by the rich and powerful. i think what we need is people who think for themselves. faith in a higher power or not should be irrelevant and personal when it comes to social discourse. whether or not you believe in god clearly has no correlation to your ability to be rational as there are irrational atheists who make bizarre claims about all religion and rational theists, who acknowledge the harm religion has done on a mass-scale throughout history, but still see the value in the religion itself, perhaps from the perspective of how religion has played a necessary role in educating people in times before public education even existed. rather than the system or empire of religion responsible throughout history for causing harm in the name of God.
My grandfather taught me, at 15, " learn two jobs, one with your mind, one with your hands... At 35, I walked away from corporate & became a carpenter. Retired & very happy.
I have a PhD from MIT, 1998 geophysics. I was working at Hopkins in a big data group. I started feeling like this about science, like it isn't healing the world, it's just chasing government grants. I got chronic fatigue syndrome. Doctors said I was "just depressed." So I quit my job, stopped sitting at a desk, sold my house, figured out how to heal myself, stopped stressing, started believing in something greater than myself, got better, moved west. Now I'm a lifeguard and a swim instructor. Just got backyard chickens. Life is more meaningful. Feeling better all the time. I understand.

After 20 years as a government I.T. network engineer working long stressful hours I remembered what my first boss said 20 years earlier. Suddenly one day he tossed me his keys and said "One day you will wake up, look in the mirror and not like what you see! Don't wait as long as I did." He walked out and never looked back. I packed up, walk out, moved on and became a Flight instructor then 15 years flying for WildFire Air Attack in Canada. Instead of sitting infront of Microsoft Windows I flew in Cessna Windows. The best decision I ever made. Healthy & Happy at 66 👍😎
I’m a young 23 year old guy who just got an offer letter to a well known very large corporation as a network engineer. Do you have any recommendations as to how to balance work and life early on to build good habits to prevent losing myself along the way? Luckily in this day and age, the civilian sector has a lot more opportunity for a hybrid work from home schedule, so having more time to focus on self and home life is probably better now than it has been the past 20 years, but I’d like to absorb any knowledge you might have to help better set me up for success in the long run.

We're learning and listening. A gr8 👍 friend of our family retired after being a Neurosurgeon, his wife a pediatrician. He'd visit after a rough day in surgery and come play his guitar. We exchanged many a food.
Wow!! It hit home for me. I spent 30 years as a fire medic. Saw a lot of human misery. Saw and treated every kind of trauma, suicide, cardiac issues, strokes and many things you can't think of. The new kids hiring on had no work ethic, no brotherhood, entitlement. The hospital ER staff was becoming more angry and arrogant. I was very unhappy. Gain weight. Acquired 3 herniated discs. Saw a spine surgeon regularly. Had 2 knee surgeries. I walked away from the career. Lost 30 lbs. Sleep all night, every night. Changed my diet. No stress. Do what I want, when I want with no set schedule. After 2 years. No more back issues. No more knee issues. No need for knee replacement now.
Yes! It seemed like we went from being the patient’s advocate, to an environment of the patient being the enemy, and it seemed like it happened overnight! New nurses thought they were too important to handle anything but “trauma”, and everything else “should have gone to the primary doctor’s office”. Oh, and everyone in pain was “faking it”.
So good to hear! Stay on that path. A health or social support system is neither healthy nor social if it wrecks the people working in it. We commercialised two areas that never should be commercial: health and law. Both result in back breaking hours and stress - no money can compensate for that once the adrenaline stops giving you the highs.

I did exactly the same with I.T. in investment banks. I just absolutely had enough. The commute, the people in the office, the politics, the blame culture, the lack of job security, looming ageism, the office, the lack of care.
This man just proved Hustle Culture is a lie. TH-cam had become corrupted by ads and corporate interests. This is a real video and people are loving it. Thanks for telling the truth.
It brings me so much joy and something else... connectedness I think; to realize that so many others are enjoying this video and that its spreading so virally. It makes me feel like everyone else is much more like me and seeing things for what they are, albeit with hope and not so much doom and gloom. We can do this ALL of us together and reject the division rhetoric & the programming---and instead usher in a new renaissance for humankind much closer to serving the people and not greed based... Healing not Treating. Flourishing not surviving. Love & LIght!
@@Freakazoid12345 if thats your take away then you missed the entire point of the video. Ask yourself why hustle culture exists? It never existed in the past. In the very beginning man lived in tribes where each member had a job and the tribe would thrive. Then during the height of the egyption empire agriculture was created. It allowed people to harvest large amounts of food so that they could spend more time developing society and technology. Then look at the industrialization era in western history. We were able to use oil and other fuel to power large factories to create mass produced goods/food/resources. What happened during these times? Civilization thrived and grew and people were able to work one job for the most part. We even had something called pensions where a person could work 20+ years and get paid a retirement salary. Fast forward to today... you have to work 2 jobs in many cases to just afford rent and a car payment. Why? We are more productive then ever arent we? Why should we have to work MORE? It is because you have been lied to. There is more then enough money to go around. However, executives have become so greedy they are stealing money from the workers through the pracitce of wage theft. Yes... you can look it up. The working class has lost over 1 trillion in salary due to stock options for executives over the past 50 years. You are being told your lazy and you have to have to "hustle" to survive. This is in fact a lie designed to get you to produce "content" for these big companies. Not to mention provide cheap services for people with money. Why not just go drive them around and buy their groceries. Anyways you will relaize it some day. I wish you the best.

Goobie you need to do what makes you happy 😊. But it's never that simple. Need to think 🤔 about where you are at. Plan and finances before you make important life decisions. I got my masters in social work at 26. I too wanted to help people. And I did for many years. Was a medical social worker in a hospital for 10 years. Very stressful. Was unhappy 😒. Worked every day except weekends. Called in sick 1day in 10 years. Because I lived in boston the city. In winter I had to cover other people's jobs. Before I became 40 I planned to change my life career and city. Moved to California eventually went back to school and became an activity therapist for the city of San Francisco. Stayed 10 😊years and 😍 loved my job and able to use my creativity. Goobie makes sense. You need to figure things out and plan. Do not make rash decisions. And life is not worth living being unhappy 😒. Your choice. 😊
This is definitely not a midlife crisis, this is enlightenment, you woke up to a corrupt system, you quit because you’re a person of conscience, god bless you! It is unfortunate for the people that have to go to that hospital that they lost a genuine wonderful surgeon and a person of substance 🙏🏻
I am more sad for the folks at his and other hospitals who never hear this heartfelt and REAL message from a neurosurgeon as opposed to having a surgery that fails because they do not follow the precepts he offers!
What a remarkable story and so inspiring.! @Reemnycfl very well said!!!, this is definitely not a midlife crisis, but unfortunately the majority of society will believe so because they haven’t woken up, per say. Like he says, a midlife crisis is holding up to something that is making you unhappy, what he did is Freedom!! 🙏🏼
I left a career in project management and engineering from Tesla at 36 years old. I was burnt out from working 12 hrs days, 6 days per week. I had symptoms of chest pain, chronic indigestion, chronic back pain, poor sleep habits, depression...The list goes on. When I left that job I moved in with parents, I started eating healthy again. I started working out consistently. I started getting 6 hours of sleep, then 7, then 8. I started working on things that I enjoyed. It look me 12 months to heal, but thanks to my amazing parents, I am back on my feet and ready to be a productive member of society. This gentleman speaks is the truth. Always,

At 70 yrs old, I can confidently affirm this is not a midlife crisis. This is your awakening. There is so much more ahead of you. Embrace it.

We're learning and listening. A gr8 👍 friend of our family retired after being a Neurosurgeon, his wife a pediatrician. He'd visit after a rough day in surgery and come play his guitar. We exchanged many a food.
Yes, thank you ❤

Huh??
YES!!!! ❤

Lol you totally missed the point

Your comment actually made me tear up. My father used to be a Neurosurgeon, later on he decided to quit being a surgeon and start working in neurology and psychotherapy. 41:15 "Now that I have left, I haven't been this happy in my whole life, it doesn't feel like a crisis.... It feels right" congratulations sir, you've found peace in your life.
"maybe financially it might be a crisis at some point"
He has 10 years of neurosurgeon money to burn through. Most people don't have that luxury

It’s very unusual for me to post a comment on you tube but I felt compelled to send you one after listening to what you had to say. I too am a physician - I practice mostly addiction medicine and some primary care. The heart of your message needs to be heard and your presentation was strikingly humble and poignant. Having listened to your heartfelt explanation for your life changing decisions certainly made an impact on my life. You seem to be a rare human being; I wish you and your family all the best.
Well said!
Well said ,doc !

He needs help‼️
It seems like you’ve gone from neurosurgery into teaching-and relieving suffering. You started with relieving your own suffering. Now you’re teaching others to have the courage to make change. It’s amazing how the natural world can bring peace and healing. Your story and the sounds of water are very soothing. What a wonderful journey you have embarked on.
You are a kind man who made the right decision, i feel blessed that your video poped up in my stream. You will have no problem finding your second career, trust yourself because you made some good decisions, the best was picking the right partner.
I have a Ph.D in cognitive science and I have worked in research for 6 years. But I was extremely unhappy and stress out all the time. I quit my job 4 yeara ago, now I just spend most of my time painting and work small jobs to sustain a simple life. Thank you so much for sharing, it brings great comfort.
What kind of small jobs do you do?
@@Carlospenamusic1
Small paintings.
If you go medical school i think you might find urself
if i may ask (interested but hesitant in cognitive psych graduate school n research etc), what kind of research did you dedicate to and what was your goal?
@@apiee6241- really, you are NOT serious.
The fact that this video got to everybody reflects how sick we all are.

I'm here depressed and burned out from long long stressful toxic work environment.
Didn't get to me. Guy seems depressed and good for him for taking time out to get himself together. We all know our health system is broken and what we should be doing. We just don't always do it.
I quit a high paying job at 55 and decided to retire myself with 10% income. Now I am 71 and think that was the best decision. I look younger and I am healthier. Living in a warm city with wonderful people and quality food ingredients. This man is right, listen to him.
may i ask what job?
if your salary was 1mil, then 10% is 100k. Even if it was 500k, 10% is 50k, which is the average. Plus, high salary people usually own a house when they are working, so maybe your 10% is a lot more than many.

@@fuongbregas I get your point, but it doesn't really matter how his 10% compares to someone else's 10%? He was saying he is happier with less money than he was accustomed to.
@@lorip1435 Even if it is less money, you still get livable wage that allows you to do nothing and enjoy life, of course you would be happy. Anyone would, lul. If I can retire with $10k/year and still survive without doing anything till I die, hell yeah I will be happy. But good luck with that, lul

When TH-cam algorithm finally suggests a 48min video that’s actually worth watching. Thank you so much for sharing your history. It is truly inspiring.
TH-cam suggested this video. This means I'm having an issue with my career now.
I was looking for this. Don't know how tf I ended up here, but yes.
I think subscribers have to start sharing the video in large numbers first. Only after that, the TH-cam algorithm will catch on automatically. Then more people tell their friends, it becomes a positive feedback loop, (another word: viral.)
My uncle was a neurosurgeon, he took his own life during covid. I'll never know what was going on in his mind. rest easy
Oh Lord, stress can make You crazy
I'm sorry. I'm my opinion the powers that be, hurt our doctors so much that it's unreal.
Thus hurting us.
i would inagine he saw the corruption in the medical and health industry and was so disgusted he was unable to deal with the emotions surrounding it. very sad im sorry to hear. rip.
maybe it is because he made a few mistakes and then his patients wanted to sue him… they face a lot of pressure to do the right move but it isn’t always the casr
he most likely couldn’t live with what Really goes on in the western medical field. may he have peace.
Saying, "I don't know" might be one of the healthiest things you can do. I'm only 38 and have found that no one on this rock has a clue. Day by day man.
The earth seems to be a flat plane.
You're incorrect. Some of us are geniuses and are able to see things that never occur to you. Give me $12K and I will open Pandora's box for you.

But im going to push through to save so I can stop working in like 18 years.
Your comment about one one having a clue, is proof in the comment section by either antisocial clown scammers or just plain idiots, which make up 99% of the characters on this great rock, I commend you for pointing that out.
I say live life in wild shots, take on challenges that come up, more so than setting up some kind of bullshit plan. A: the plan you setup (college, career track etc) will be obsolete by the time you're done ( AKA why most tech workers keep loosing their jobs) or B:you will die unexpectedly ( falling on a hike, getting stabbed in an uber, unknown blood clot) .
Peace
