Disclaimer: Your experience does not reflect every experience everywhere! I would not be where I am without my degrees, and having additional degrees entitles me to higher pay than those without them. You may not need a degree for your field, but a lot of fields do require or expect higher education and they will ask you what you majored in. The trick is in how you APPLY your education, not where or how you get it.
this, most people with degrees make up 50% more than those with just high school diplomas granted if you chose a degree in gender studies, theater etc you might not be the most sought after person.
Facts. If you didn't learn how to apply your education during your years in college, you might not have been paying close enough attention. As much as I love what I learned from my classes as well, I think on the job market I got way more out of the fact that I was working in some very cool jobs at my uni while I was studying. Look at the student jobs your college/uni is providing! Apply to them! Even if it means an extra year of study, you've got a year of extra skills and new people and references, and of course that dinero.
Obviously people who have a goal of getting a regular dead end job that requires a degree don't have to question the worth of their degree. This video is for entrepreneurs like TH-camrs. You dont ask entrepeneurs if they have a degree bc you know they built their success.
@@AT-gz4ej nobody forgets you need a degree if you've ever been job searching, but you need a degree ass people forget that some people dont wanna be a slave to society. Put themselves in debt bc someone said you need to, stress yourself out with work, barely get enough time to enjoy your life just bc a good job gets you good "benefits".
levi not every job that requires a degree is non-entrepreneurial/ dead-end. Architecture requires degrees and certification but is a field of hard-work and artistic innovation. Some jobs need degrees and certification because of their nature. Doesn’t mean they’re dead-end jobs. You wouldn’t trust someone to build a skyscraper without a degree proving they know the physics of it.
Love that Jo had 7 internships! Can you do a video about how you found and got those opportunities, and other ways you invested in yourself? Would love to hear more about it :)
Real talk though, I’ve always had a passion for learning new languages and travel. Ever since I was a young girl, I knew that I wanted to travel the world and learn about different cultures. I’m Latina and I want to be more fluent in Spanish and I’ve always loved French songs, French culture, food etc. when I was in high school, I decided to learn French. I looked up TH-cam videos and stumbled upon the “How To Sound Cooler in French” vid. Damon and Jo inspire me to do the things I’ve always wanted to do. I’m going to college in a week and I have no idea what I want to major in. I’m going to study French and Spanish, but I need to be exposed to new things in order to understand what I want my future to look like. I still have a long way to go, but thank you Damon and Jo :,)
I would say don't major in that unless you want to be a teacher. And know that doesn't pay well. Do something that has a clear career path. You can learn languages on that side or maybe you could minor in it.
I've the same willing ,, ❤ Good luck, I'm french and I want to speak many language including english. I hope one day I can visit America.. Also Asia.. And Africa Australia and the whole Europe :))
R Y, yeah that’s what I’m thinking too. I’m looking into entrepreneurship/business/marketing and I’ll probably minor in Spanish or French. I’m also interested in interior design, but most of the people that I see that are interior designers never get a degree on it and just do it. I have yet to talk with my teachers and advisor.
The beauty of college, speaking of it in the states just because that’s where I’m from, your two first years are literally your g.e’s which expose you to different things. Then once your two years are over you have to choose your major.
i would say to consider taking a gap year and be an au pair in France for a year (you can also take French classes, and you’ll be walking away with more knowledge of French than your first semester of learning French from a textbook) learn about the education system there consider doing your undergrad there as it is affordable and then travel because you’ll be in Europe. Just do research on all of this and you’ll see what I mean. Hopefully this bit of info helps.
1. they went to college in MANHATTAN (expensive) 2. college degrees matter. im accounting and you have to have A MASTERS to be a CPA 3. college is more than school. go to football games, make friends, study abroad 4. we all wish we could drop our major and be world travelers like them but thats not realistic
1. College in Manhattan doesn't change anything. If they went to CUNY they wouldn't be spending 50k per semester but a square 3k or 10k(out of state). Private colleges come for your coins 2. College degrees only matter for highly specialized jobs like working at the hospital/law firm/bank etc. Great job getting your accounting degree hope you never change your mind on a career path bc that would suck. 3. Honestly if im mad about the price im paying for college and how i dont feel satisfied, some random club isn't gonna make it better. I like dominoes but im not gonna pay 50k to be in dominoes club. if i was good at sports i would have a scholarship anyways. 4. I think its becoming more possible for people to look pass their fear and become world travelrs bc of social media and maybe you could've made some good connections in your degree worthy job to do all that. It takes some true determination to be unsatisfied with something that's sucking up so much of your time, money and mental health for 4+ yrs. Then go on to work a possibly unsatisfying job to settle down and ignore all the things that make you happy or excited about life. Some people aren't in the position to chase their dreams but college shouldn't put them in debt for the rest of their lives just to have a stable life and an ok job.
So true. If everyone dropped out of college to travel, who would fly the planes? Who would build the airports? Who would organize taxes? Like these jobs are necessary and I hate how everyone looks down upon them. I want to be an architect, which also requires a masters. Doesn’t mean I’m a dead-end idiot with no motivation... just means I need to learn the physics before I go building shit.
@@levi-ly5vg Maybe in USA college is a joke, but in Europe, a lot of jobs and I mean a lot of jobs do look at the degree. Also college gives the opportunities that you otherwise would never have. But I do agree that college isnt everything and you can build a career without college, I just believe in general it is a lot harder.
@@pe4774 the american education system is literally a joke. From funding, accessibility and so much more. You have an incompetent curriculum till college and then the shit show continues if you didnt have the chance to go to a "good" college. To add on top of that only masters degrees and PhDs count for anything . Ive seen too many situations where someone with a bachelor's finds out that someone with a certification can get the same job/pay as them.
kathy peralta i’m in my senior year and i haven’t even applied anywhere bc i know i’m going to community college bc the first two years are completely free for me and most of my friends are staying home and doing the same. only struggle is sacrificing like The College Experience and also wondering what could’ve been if u really strived to go out of your comfort zone yknow but in the long run it’s way more rational to save money
OH MY GOSH i just finished the video and guys: just bc u guys are successful without degrees doesn't mean other people won't be akdjsjs it's so rare that people can post on youtube and have a blog and be as famous as you guys!
I’m a Consumer Journalism Major with a minor in art! I wanna be an animator y’all 😭 it’s tough out here! Got inspired by y’all so I’m studying abroad, leaving for Italy next week 😊
Your videos kept me motivated and after 6 years of community college and a fat transfer scholarship I was able to study abroad in Bologna, Italy last semester ! I’ve always wanted to travel and experience new cultures and your videos constantly reminded me of that
I took 5 years off because I was so conflicted, I finally went to art school, it's changed my life! Some people need some time to dive into what they love, and to have others also be supportive. 100% love the talk about college though -- makes people feel less alone in that weird decision!
It would be so awesome if you guys talked more about business & entrepreneurship on this channel in the future (especially since there is an audience of young women who might not see running a business as much of an option compared to their male counterparts). It's really empowering to see you guys work so hard; it makes it seem possible for your audience to be successful, too! ♥️
hey guys! i get that y'all are just explaining ur experience but i would be very careful about giving college advice when u are in the entertainment industry. while i agree the US college system sucks and is way overpriced, a college degree is really invaluable in most fields!!
I think the most valuable college advice isn’t whether you get your degree or not, it’s where. Community college is incredibly undervalued and is a great way to get your degree and hopefully not be in debt for decades.
I have a lot to unpack on this topic but mainly, while I do think it's great that you guys feel you didn't really need college, the majority of people do need to go for a stepping stone into many career avenues. I didn't like the schooling aspects of college either: crazy loans, expensive as hell textbooks, and rigid structure of the curriculum but it was necessary in the end fo me. I wouldn't have been able to start in my ideal field without doing a degree. This video was very fun tho and I did the quiz, which turned out to be pretty accurate personally lmao. It was also probably one of the most fun quizzes I've done in a while!
I actually have decided to drop out of college because you guys helped me realize that what I want to do in life..is EXPERIENCE life. I was a French major and like yeah I love French and other languages, but it's not the same sitting in a boring lecture than it is teaching yourself with music and movies and talking with native speakers. In fact, I actually bought Spanish and Brazilian Portugeuse workbooks to LEARN those languages. Completely by myself. So I totally am with you guys that you can love learning and continue learning without paying an arm and a leg to do so. Thanks for the constant philosophy to help us all stay #woke. 😉🧠
I don't know...but I do believe you'll find out in the future that everything you learned has helped you build up the person you are now. It's not been a waste :)
I know for STEM fields college and beyond is really important but do you think that taking a few classes in a field (business, painting, acting etc) is helpful. Taking classes is cheaper than paying for a full 4-year degree, which to me seems worth it without putting so much money out. ...also I'm a college student and I work at the alumni office and call alumni asking them to donate 😭. On behalf of all the people who call I'm sorry...but it's the highest paying student job 😔
I really needed to hear this. 👏🏾 I nearly got a degree in public health last year. Like, I was one class and an internship away from actually getting the diploma. 😂 But I took a break to save some money and figure out what it is that I really want to spend decades of my life doing. I’m a big supporter of taking breaks. Not every goal needs a strict schedule. This isn’t high school. We can pretty much do what we want and finish whenever. It took me a while to understand and embrace that. I’m still gonna finish that degree. Now, I know exactly what I want to do with it. I’d still be clueless if I didn’t leave school when I did to figure things out.
Studied B.S. in Biochemistry and currently am doing medicine. My regret was not choosing a more fun premed such as nursing or physical therapy. Burnout is very real. If anyone here plans to take medicine or postgrad 100% choose something you totally enjoy. Don’t just fall into the most competitive premed degrees.
Ok but the thing is, would you be where you at right now without the journey of college? The people you met? The experiences? I feel like you have to try it (if you can) to really know if it’s right for you or not. Some people already have that knowledge, MOST ppl are confused and don’t.
Not really. If you want interaction and do that OUTSIDE of University. Having been forced to go myself it was the most isolating time of my life and I learned way more being on my own outside of Academia than anywhere else. Most people if you ask me shouldn't even be going.
I’m a psych major, but I started with totally different major until my third year and also transferred schools. I know it’s not the most important decision I’ll make in my life, but it felt like it at the time. 100% happier in my university and major now. It’s great to hear your guys’ perspective looking back, hope I find success in my own way too!
I read this in an article ages ago and it's still stuck with me. "The problem with the education system is that we think of it as a system". We are all unique. During the Industrial Era, I feel like we became so obsessed with making machines and increasing efficiency that we made education (a journey that is never going to be the same for anyone) a system.
Y’all encouraged me to take a pause after getting my associates degree! I owe literally 17,000 for three semesters🙄 I started watching you my first semester after just getting back from being an au pair in France. I was like wow this a lot of money I could be spending on plane tickets and doing what I actually want to do. I’m currently working towards being a midwife and I just signed a lease in Kona, HI.💗
I like that you're making a point to say that you don't need a college degree in order to become a successful person, but it doesn't mean that degrees are worthless. University is not the only way to learn a craft, but sure as hell can be a wonderful experience. I went to college in Brazil e and in the U.S., it was great, I don't regret the years that I spent on it. These opportunities were my way to improve my life.
Since I started at Community college and plan on getting a master's (pray for me) I have quite a few majors lol. At CC im a liberal studies major because they don't have my actual major. Once I transfer next Fall I'll be majoring in either Anthropology or Linguistics with a minor in American Sign Language. Then I'll get a master's in Speech Language Pathology! I just pray that everything falls into place, I don't end up with tons of debt and I'm happy in the end.
Taking a gap year before I study Linguistics hopefully in either France or Netherlands. You guys gave me the courage to do what I want and listen to others expectations
Y'alls timing!!!!! I'm a former Business major turned Lib Arts major this year with my last year in college. This my last year and I'll be done Fall 2020! I honestly love it a lot it and I'm so relieved to be in it. I'm interested in a lot of things sooooo I was so mad it took me this long to do so. I can see myself anywhere. Plus, I went the less traditional route and went to community college and now I'm in online college. I paid a heck of a lot less!!!! I'm excited to see when I get to the finish line. I'm leaning to work in media, marketing, and web development...never know what's going to happen 😂
I went to school for English and Education. I am currently a teacher. My quiz results are Fashion Design. I was only interested in Fashion Design when I was in 4th grade.
Biggest takeaway from getting a Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology (reaaaaaalllly not “lucrative” in the job market rn) is its what you do with that knowledge. I took my B.A. in Anthropology, and combined with my other passions, I am now working at a public health nonprofit providing technical assistance to Indigenous communities in creating healthy living policies for cancer prevention. Did I ever expect that to happen? Literally never. But here we are! Also, I wouldn’t fully discredit humanities and arts degrees. Liberal arts learning is SO FUCKING IMPORTANT ESPECIALLY IN THIS CURRENT POLITICAL CLIMATE. right before I graduated one of my friends who was finishing up a degree in Biomedical Engineering was freaking out because she spent 4 years in school learning about engineering n science and whatever and knew literally nothing about human-centric issues. Regardless if you truly enjoy your degree or field or whatever, college has you learning things in the most unexpected places
First of all, I love that someone else is talking about this...I feel like my friends & I talk about this topic of the broken US education system constantly! That is like one of the quickest ways for me to get heated. I literally ruined my financial life by going to an expensive prestigious university, thinking that I had to prove my worth. (Obviously now I know better) Because instead of being a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist working in that field; I am a RDN now working as a Fine Dining Server & making more money than I would if I stuck in that entry-level position in the medical field. I am so much happier now compared to being burnt out in a clinic. The only thing that could make me happier was if I didn't have these soul crushing student loans for my six year mistake.
Love this video already, especially since I'm about to go study abroad for my first semester of freshman year and still don't know what I'm doing when I get back ♥️
College is definitely what you make of it. I majored in international business at a pretty good university and I would do it all over again. It comes down to choice-I knew I was getting myself into something expensive. But I got the chance to network, study abroad, make friends, and live in a new city. I feel like I did learn a lot, and I grew.
In college I majored in chemistry because I love science but I didn't want to be a doctor. So I work in the lab which I love. This test gave me computer science. I've been teaching myself to code since high school because I was apprehensive about being the only girl in the class 😂
I work in the an art gallery (also have a youtube channel about art!;)) and I actually haven't studied it! I think no college with art degree would taught me all the things i use now... Especially in Contemporary Art field!
You should make a video on how you got to your current position on your channel! I just graduated with a bachelor's in Art History and am hoping to find a job in a gallery soon :)
P R E A C H I T ! D&J, I so very much appreciate you two and what it is that you do with this amazing channel! 💖💘 I myself studied Conservation and Cultural Heritage with a focus on historic architecture, super happy with all the knowledge and good contacts that accumulated over the years, got a “prestigious” job in my field, quit three years later, and couldn’t be happier over my current job of 2.5 years as a waiter at a top-notch restaurant. Listen to your gut and do what feels right, no matter what degree you have, as you only get one shot at a happy and fulfilling life!
also PSA i worked at one of those donation centers for my school and only 10% of your donation goes back to the school!!! so if u donate $100, $10 goes to the university and the other 90% goes to the calling center company. you’re much better off donating directly to a department if you reallyyyyy wanna donate, but as much as you wanna help the real impact comes from large donors or “friends” of the university. when i had that job a lot of the people i called had the same feelings about how college wasn’t useful to them. of course in some cases some really valuable information can come but personally the thing i think it’s most useful for is getting connections to internships and a network
I took the test and got Clinical Medicine at Harvard. I am studying Social Science (Liberal Arts) at Osaka University. Good to know that I am on the right path.
I'm a chemistry and Anthropology double major, about to start my senior year. My issue is that once I get my BS and BA, I still have to go to grad school for my PhD if I want a job in either field
This was a much needed video... long story short I’ve done two years of college then took a break to serve a year and a half mission in Brazil 🇧🇷 And afterwards it changed my mind in so many ways. Now I’m back going to go back to school but my mind is all over the place... and my heart is torn between the lucrative aspect of learning and the wholesome uplifting aspect of learning. And schooling in the states gives me so much anxiety because of loans and money 😭 But this video helped me a lot to feel secure in my choices... I decided to keep my major in Psychology and minors in Biology and Chemistry BUT I’ve added a minor in International Studies... the original idea was apply to Med School... but since back from Brazil been leaning more towards Diplomacy and Foreign Services. So now I’m just taking it one step at a time and listening to my heart and mind. Amo vocês! Paulina
I was in art and changed for engineering. All my friends still judges me but I felt like I needed a new challenge and art was just giving me anxiety. I realized it was a hobby not something I wanna work with.
Just wanted to say that in every country college is a business choice because even if it's usually way cheaper than the US, it takes a lot of time and time IS money! I feel a lot of people don't consider when they really should
You guys are my inspiration! I’m a freshman in college at Appalachian State University, and I watch your videos to keep my sanity and hope for the future. Thanks for sharing your amazing lives. I hope mine will be filled with travels like yours one day! 💕💕
Damon and Jo, we went to college together (we took Video I together and I remember you guys were working on this channel). Honestly, I just think it was our university that sucked. I feel like everyone else I have talked to that had smaller classes had a better, more rigorous college experience (that didn't seem like a waste of money). Glad to see you guys found success!
*I'm in this position right now, I have my Associates, but I want to be a pilot and youtuber and do business and other things that getting my bachelors just doesn't make sense any way I spin it with, with all the time and money and stress it would take me. But of course, time does tell. This video was so helpful, y'all always keeping it real!*
It's crazy how well timed this is haha I'm starting college soon and while I'd love to be studying something else, I'm planning on majoring in something for the money :,)
I majored in Social Work. Before I transferred I took a quiz like this that suggested Social Work or Health Management as well. Was blessed to have a mentor at the time that was a social worker. Went to Cal State LA and did not have to pay for my classes or books, but since I was a full time student and had an unpaid internship then that meant I had less time to work at my job that actually paid me, not well, but it was some money. Sooooooo I still had to get a small loan. I appreciated attending college because I created a network with people with similar interests. But, out of college it has been hard to find a job that actually pays us our worth. We still have to work our way up.
My university also uses my ‘success’ story to encourage students and potential students. I majored in Foreign Language teaching and translating, lived in China for 3 years after graduating and speak English, French and Chinese (and Spanish is my mother tongue). I was already teaching by the time I started university, I already knew English and French and all the school really gave me was an official diploma. They also call me every semester to see if I want to give a talk about how the school gave me what I needed to succeed in life. 🙃
Parents: You're 23 now are you going to ever try going to school? Me: Damon and Jo said don't go to college so I'm not going 😤 Parents: who the hell...
I'm starting my first year as a Romanian student in the UK doing criminology with social psychology and I chose this course strictly because I thought it would be interesting
After 4 years of university in the states, eventually I finished my degree in international business and finance in Paris ...and if I could go back in time, I would skip the states university and head straight for Europe. I was lucky enough to have a decent athletic scholarship , but even with that aide I’m still paying my loans for another 7 years in the states while I’ve paid all my French school within the year I attended. I really wish I would’ve seen this video back in 2009.
I agree with the general sentiment that college degrees don't guarantee success. Sadly, my dream career requires a LOT of schooling, but this is the case where the degrees are worth the money you invest in them. I know a lot of my friends are grinding through college, racking up debt, pursuing a degree that doesn't align with their passions, and that's where the college system fails them. There are so many paths towards success, and I'm glad that you're talking about how college isn't the only one!
i'm going to college next year. still not sure what career I want. the only two certainties I have is that I am a DREAMER and I really want to WRITE TRAVELING the world. after many anxiety and panic attacks, crying sessions and conversations with my psychologist I decided that I will do JOURNALISM. i'm not sure I'm making the right choice, but I think in life we are never sure about anything and we know that at some point we will have to risk it. i'm taking a risk, because I REALLY wanna live my dreams, I just hope the risk is worth it!! 💛
I'm a theatre major and French minor at my college and I'm so excited because I'm a theare technician not a performer so I think I'll learn a lot of super great practical skills from my teachers and get great connections so I can have internships while I'm in school and graduate and get a good job!! :)
It really depends on what you are going to school for. There’s specific careers that just require it. There’s no way around it. I always like to boil it down to asking: will you get back what you invested? For instance, to become a teacher school is necessary, but it also does not pay an abundance amount. Going to a city school is a better option then a private or state school.
Thank you for this. I'm going into 10th grade in a week in another new school and I'm totally having a mental breakdown. Why does the education system suck so much? Teenagers these days suffer from so much unnecessary anxiety and depression, and for what? I love watching your channel because I'd love to travel like this someday. Sorry for my rant!
I think the key is not to go to college "just because". It's a business investment just like paying for anything else. Only go if you have a clear vision of the career you want and then research which degrees, certifications and licenses will put support that vision. Along with internships, mentorships and job placement or immediate business plan for beginning your own practice/ entrepreneurship. And don't discount the value of trade schools. You definitely need to do college to become a doctor, lawyer, teacher, therapist. Most curriculum here does not offer experiential hands on on the floor applicable skills just concepts so it really depends on your goals and finding the right programs to suit your needs and access to resources/community. Definitely don't go just because you feel like you're supposed to. If so, then do something that has multiple applications like general biomedical sciences or psychology or language. This way you can easily become a specialist through a masters or certificate program or at least have the foundational knowledge to do something with on your own. Never something specific unless it suits your ultimate career goals and you have a solid idea of where you could work or how to work for yourself with it after graduating. Otherwise, there's really no point. Especially now that there are free and cheaper options for furthering your education.
Real talk: take as many college credits as you can in high school, pick a cheap college that has your major-for most careers a fancy college doesnt matter, pick a major that contributes to your career, and overload on credits each semester so you can graduate early From someone who got a 4 year degree in 2 years Ps. I majored in social work and i got environmental law from the quiz
Actually *more* students are making the conscious decision to go to college than even 20 yrs ago especially because college degrees are becoming the norm in terms of how successful you want to be in the field as well as how we are socially acceptable going to college has become so much so that it is actually getting ridiculous
Love you both so much! Love your insight! You two have inspired me to rethink how I’m looking at my future/college/career/life and am so excited to see what it will hold. ☺️
I majored in global studies/international studies at an “affordable” university and don’t regret it at all. I went to a community college and worked a semester and a summer before transferring to my university. I managed to graduate with less than $5000 in student debt because I quit my job my last year. My only issue was that all the jobs I wanted required a degree, lived experience abroad, and fluency in another language. Y’all, I’m conversational but not fluent yet 😅😅 So your girl graduated this month and is heading to Spain as an au pair to get both the experience and language. All in all, I still recommend university. Update: my uni was in Texas and was around $8000/year
wow um i don't think u guys understand the work and brain power that goes into physics and mathematics. if albert einstein was alive today he definitely would not have been as "smart as everyone else". it's like saying stephen hawking (who was alive during our time) or neil degrasse tyson was as smart as you or me. u don't just discover things out of nowhere. complex mathematics isn't something u can learn from experience but takes years and years of devotion towards ur education to be that level of brilliant. education does matter in areas like these. just because u guys are more successful doesn't mean no one should go to college. i'm a literature major and i love college bc it's so much deeper than my level of knowledge from hs and these are things not everyone has to learn but may contribute to the literary studies body of knowledge someday similar to physics and other sciences! but it's true that i may never be as successful as you guys
After three years and graduating from the academy of art as a sculptor I can really relate to what you are saying, but the thing is, here in my country (even though the education here sucks) or in europe, the fact that you can learn something new without paying a big amount of money, encourage you to get in college and improve your skills in whatever field you want. Before getting to study in the academy of art I failed the admission test to get to the academy of music! and I felt bad, but then I completed my path in music on my own, and I ended up, after three years, improving my self in both fine arts and music which is way better than going to study music, and not being even able to understand what the word fine art stands for. So from my non-american perspective, I think that purchasing your dreams requires both studying in college and on your own, having some internships so that you can learn as many skills that can help you in the field that you choose. And of course, being a self taught or a graduated student does not change the fact that you are able to do whatever you want and fulfill your dream. Thank you DamonandJo for this funny topic to discuss HAHAHA xD
Damon and Jo thanks so much for this video, it helped me gain an outside perspective on things being a young student myself and choosing a college major. Just one comment though - I love how you share your stories of the learning EXPERIENCE throughout life, but it works for you guys because of what you do. The comment "Learning Nomenclature will not help you get paid" is not true. While I understand your point that colleges are a business and a formal, traditional education isn't everything, some people NEED to learn Nomenclature for science careers. You cannot learn all about the human body or animals or physics or chemistry through experience alone, so that comment felt a bit offputting to me. While YOUR path may be framed by experience, OTHER'S paths in the science field for example, DOES need a formal education to get a job and GET PAID. Just my own perspective on things, no hate at all, the vid just opened my eyes to this idea
with every video I like you guys more, you're really such awesome people! As Damon said it, you developed to a bit of a thought provoking channel and it's still just really nice! I wish to find a friend like you two found each other, you seem to have such an alike mind!
Double majored in Spanish and Organizational communications with a minor in Latin American studies. I learned more when I did two semesters abroad than I did in my 4.5 years of school. I’m really thankful for the scholarships I got and being an RA it helped bring down the cost a lot and a state school where I live costs a lot less than other places in the US (still not cheap though!)
There is a misconception about Stanford university, that Stanford is expensive af. It actually is, but Stanford provides a generous financial aid program that helps students pay their tuition depending on their need. Household income below than $65k a year or even less than $125k can apply for scholarships and grants that help them pay their tuition. 75% of students graduate debt free (debt aprox $16k). So it is easier to pay for your Stanford tuition but it is not easy to get in. Depending on your needs and income, the school grants you a determine amount of money, so some students might have to pay some money out of pocket. I met many Stanford students who told me this, and the reason why Stanford can afford paying for their students tuition is because most of the Alumni donate a buttload of money to the school to keep this program going on. So if you apply to Stanford and get it, get that degree bitch. Learn about your resources.
I dropped out of university last year after realizing that 3 years of this shitty Modern Languages degree with an emphasis in Business Administration hadn't taught me to do anything, any - thing! And had to get a student loan which I'm still paying for! Now I'm an English teacher, with an online teaching certificate I got online, I'm getting online education on Trading and I'm getting a lot more money than I would be getting after what would be 5 years of experience as a professional in the major I would have graduated from, traveling once a month to any place I want to, making my way to move to Germany next year, and especially, being happy with my lifestyle. You do you, but freakin' do something that makes you happy, people! You guys have been a great source of inspiration to do all of the things I'm doing and that I'll do. Thank you so much for all of the content you make! ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥
I agree with what you say. I joined the military right out of high school. I was in 12 years. A lot of military jobs don't transfer easily to the civilian jobs market. I have my degree B/S in IT system security because I hate working with people would rather work on a network or computer system. Right now I'm looking to start my own business also. Yeah, a lot going on. It never stops either we just keep evoving over time. for what we need and want to do as a career. I agree on no one has ever asked if I have a degree.
The reality is, if you do what the society perceives and expects university students should learn and acquire from uni, you’ve got it If you focus on personal gain from uni, meh, you’ve most probably failed the game I did not do well academically, lack interests in research, suck in presentation, yet I passed and get the recognition Because university is mostly about doing what society expect you to do, partake and give it back to society, and that’s where high income graduates comes from
Why are y’all both so beautiful , Damon you got me kinda shook with those baby blue eyes tho.. 😏. I’ve changed my major almost 5 times and I’m still in school lmao! Now I’m a digital filmmaking major. Let’s see how that goes. When you were explaing that dating thing had me busting up lol. I love y’all
Great video guys! I got a bachelor's in I.T. and a minor in Biology (I know, weird combination) and honestly I'm done with education. I'm not going to take a masters. I'd learn more and I'd get better job offers by using those 2 years (or more) in actual job experience!
What we should have majored in: Audio Engineering
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
lmao
As a headphone user, with a low volume, I was able to tune the "thump-thump-thum-" out!!
and that's what i'm bout to do! Music production and sound engineering :)
It's actually not that bad!
Nicholas Lover I think that goes with what they were saying about making sure you choose a degree that becomes a return on investment.
Nicholas Lover, Tell me more!
💯

Some jobs do require a degree tho
Of course a lot of the college doesn't matter types forget that lol.
They're surprised no one asked TH-camrs if they have degree.
Catherine O'Brien yes please !
Petition to make Damon sign up for philosophy classes in Paris
1. they went to college in MANHATTAN (expensive)
2. college degrees matter. im accounting and you have to have A MASTERS to be a CPA
3. college is more than school. go to football games, make friends, study abroad
4. we all wish we could drop our major and be world travelers like them but thats not realistic
completely agree.
1. College in Manhattan doesn't change anything. If they went to CUNY they wouldn't be spending 50k per semester but a square 3k or 10k(out of state). Private colleges come for your coins
Ive seen too many situations where someone with a bachelor's finds out that someone with a certification can get the same job/pay as them.
community college is the wave tbh save hella money for the first two years. then I get to transfer to a four year. we Gucci. its a struggle though
kathy peralta i’m in my senior year and i haven’t even applied anywhere bc i know i’m going to community college bc the first two years are completely free for me and most of my friends are staying home and doing the same. only struggle is sacrificing like The College Experience and also wondering what could’ve been if u really strived to go out of your comfort zone yknow but in the long run it’s way more rational to save money
why is it a struggle for u tho

you were never asked prob because you're in the US....in asia (like my country) you get asked what's your degree and major A LOT
yep
I feel you. Same thing in Middle east.
Same in Europe lol One of the 1st things you talk about when you meet new people lol
In the UK, this happens all the time. Every job interview I’ve been asked about my degree

OH MY GOSH i just finished the video and guys: just bc u guys are successful without degrees doesn't mean other people won't be akdjsjs
it's so rare that people can post on youtube and have a blog and be as famous as you guys!
I’m a Consumer Journalism Major with a minor in art! I wanna be an animator y’all 😭 it’s tough out here! Got inspired by y’all so I’m studying abroad, leaving for Italy next week 😊
that is so exciting! i hope it goes well for you x
Bea Gale Thanks! I hope to vlog as well!
Community college is incredibly undervalued and is a great way to get your degree and hopefully not be in debt for decades.
so true !!!!!!
It was also probably one of the most fun quizzes I've done in a while!
writedrunkeditsober, so what did you get?
College SZN 🤮 brb while I stress about tuition costs
fio • no honestly
I’ll just go to penn Foster career classes college is not for me and the rest is self study.
I wish Damon and Jo were around 10 years ago when I was in High school. Better guidance than the teachers I had!
So true, learning should be about learning what you love, not a business decision.
me after 5 years of intense uni...thinking what have I done with my life =))))
Same 😅
I don't know...but I do believe you'll find out in the future that everything you learned has helped you build up the person you are now. It's not been a waste :)
You made a smart investment in your future, don't worry. Those five years will be very important, as will the piece of paper you got from them.
x2
I know for STEM fields college and beyond is really important
but do you think that taking a few classes in a field (business, painting, acting etc) is helpful.
7:11 When Jo said “Bill Nye the Science Guy”, I immediately thought, “more like Damon Dominique the Science Geek.”
0:50 yes, American college really is that expensive. Please, pray for us.
I’m in my last year of undergrad in Psychology and the test said Computer Science which is something wayyy off the charts lol. I’m shook
What are you going to do with it? I’m in the same position public health with an internship left
Berta axo facts.... Their life might have been completely different if they never went to college
Addie Emily amazing
This was fabulous. Still my favorite TH-cam channel ever
You guys should make a video taking the Myers Briggs personality test ☺️
They did, Jo is ENFP and Damon ENFJ ;)
What quiz is it?
I missed you guys together 💜
Omg I love this video! I relate to this so much! I just graduated with a business degree and am now doing TH-cam stuff. Wish I did graphic design.

I myself studied Conservation and Cultural Heritage with a focus on historic architecture, super happy with all the knowledge and good contacts that accumulated over the years, got a “prestigious” job in my field, quit three years later, and couldn’t be happier over my current job of 2.5 years as a waiter at a top-notch restaurant. Listen to your gut and do what feels right, no matter what degree you have, as you only get one shot at a happy and fulfilling life!
I was so happy that Damon got Psychology!
also PSA i worked at one of those donation centers for my school and only 10% of your donation goes back to the school!!! so if u donate $100, $10 goes to the university and the other 90% goes to the calling center company. you’re much better off donating directly to a department if you reallyyyyy wanna donate, but as much as you wanna help the real impact comes from large donors or “friends” of the university. when i had that job a lot of the people i called had the same feelings about how college wasn’t useful to them. of course in some cases some really valuable information can come but personally the thing i think it’s most useful for is getting connections to internships and a network

This was a much needed video... long story short I’ve done two years of college then took a break to serve a year and a half mission in Brazil 🇧🇷
And afterwards it changed my mind in so many ways. Now I’m back going to go back to school but my mind is all over the place... and my heart is torn between the lucrative aspect of learning and the wholesome uplifting aspect of learning. And schooling in the states gives me so much anxiety because of loans and money 😭
But this video helped me a lot to feel secure in my choices...
Amo vocês!

I feel a lot of people don't consider when they really should
just found your channel yesterday, and I loveee you guys! 10/10. you've convinced me to start a business and move to europe.
THEY LITERALLY MAKE EVERY VIDEO FUNNY AND ENTERTAINING. HOWWWW?!?!?!

Great. This is very helpful. I just can't believe I open a video by random and found something I need. Subscribed!
literally watching porn and saw the notification, I immediately clicked the video lol

Me: Damon and Jo said don't go to college so I'm not going 😤
Parents: who the hell...
The faves are back!
There are so many paths towards success, and I'm glad that you're talking about how college isn't the only one!
so nice to see yal in a video together again. my heart is full
i'm going to college next year. still not sure what career I want. the only two certainties I have is that I am a DREAMER and I really want to WRITE TRAVELING the world. after many anxiety and panic attacks, crying sessions and conversations with my psychologist I decided that I will do JOURNALISM. i'm not sure I'm making the right choice, but I think in life we are never sure about anything and we know that at some point we will have to risk it. i'm taking a risk, because I REALLY wanna live my dreams, I just hope the risk is worth it!! 💛
You should double major.
Double major to reduce the risk but still go after your dreams
I majored in International Relations and Chinese. The quiz gave me Fashion Design at FIT.
Going to a city school is a better option then a private or state school.
this was actually so real tho i loved it
Thank you for this.
Real talk: take as many college credits as you can in high school, pick a cheap college that has your major-for most careers a fancy college doesnt matter, pick a major that contributes to your career, and overload on credits each semester so you can graduate early From someone who got a 4 year degree in 2 years
Ps. I majored in social work and i got environmental law from the quiz
Omg Jo I feel you, Excel is the first thing that comes to my mind when I think about what I learned in college lol
tuition gets more expensive when fewer students go to college so they make up for the low enrollment by raising the tuition
The one job I've said looks the most miserable my entire life is accounting... and that's what it told me I should do. 😂
The reality is, if you do what the society perceives and expects university students should learn and acquire from uni, you’ve got it
If you focus on personal gain from uni, meh, you’ve most probably failed the game
I did not do well academically, lack interests in research, suck in presentation, yet I passed and get the recognition
Because university is mostly about doing what society expect you to do, partake and give it back to society,
and that’s where high income graduates comes from
I love this video 💗💗 really needed this bc I’m so unhappy in school right now and don’t feel like I’m learning anything 🥺
I love y’all
I would say that Jo looks gorgeous in that outfit,
but Jo looks good in everything, all of the time
Awsamazing Eden 😍
Great video guys!
I got a bachelor's in I.T. and a minor in Biology (I know, weird combination) and honestly I'm done with education. I'm not going to take a masters. I'd learn more and I'd get better job offers by using those 2 years (or more) in actual job experience!
