    Great video! I actually had another problem for which I was banging my head against the wall for ages. By chance I logged onto my router and saw the LAN port was switching between 100Mbit/s and 1GBit/s, when it was on the lower speed it was unplayable. I checked all the cables and sure enough there was a damaged CAT5e cable in the chain which was reducing the speed. So make sure your cables are all at least CAT5e and are actually working! It only takes one broken wire of the 8 to fall back to 100Mbit/s. I know this speed should be more than enough but I think it was the instability more than the speed that caused the issue.

    Great video! Btw, do we have a reference of what's the top performance Portal can get? I'm having a good performance with my eero mesh network, but still seeing color banding, eventual stuttering, and slight image compression. Nothing game breaking, but would be nice to know if I can extract more quality improving my network.

    • @TheGameFatherUK
      @TheGameFatherUK  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I don't think there is much in the way of top performance referencing, just opinions and anecdotes really due to the lack of benchmarking tools on the Portal. There are quite a large number of reports of frame drops and stuttering on the Portal even with the best network configs and conditions. Sony have released a couple of updates over the last few weeks but the problem still persists for those users.

So, if my kid is watching pepper pig on youtube, my wife is watching netflix, my older son is on his ps5, my other son is on his xbox s...and this is a factor I cannot regulate, in other words, this is the constant state of my network....will a PS Portal ever be an option in my house?

    • @TheGameFatherUK
      @TheGameFatherUK  28 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Thanks! I wish I could give you a solid answer but it really depends on the quality of the network equipment and the networks it creates (which can vary depending on environmental factors like construction materials, neighbours, appliances etc). Your best bet would be to use the free remote play app on a mobile/tablet device at those busy times to see how well it works for you. The performance of a Portal will be very close to that.

    I’m having this very weird issue. So I’m living in a student apartment where I connected my ps5 to my personal router with a LAN. So the apartment complex has a guest network and another for residents. For some reason when my portal is on the resident network it fails to connect, but when it’s on guest network it works. My gf lives in the same complex so when I’m over at her place I just carry my portal with me that is why I’m not connected to my personal router

    • @TheGameFatherUK
      @TheGameFatherUK  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There are quite a lot of variables there, we'd need to look a bit closer at how the guest and resident WiFi is configured. Easiest thing to check first is what the IP address of each are (on each WiFi). It might be that the addresses the Guest network are disturbing are on the same subnet as the one your console is on (is your router at home distributing IP addresses?) .

    Immediately after connecting to the PS portal, the wifi disconnects and doesn't recover until I restart the router. When I get the internet from my phone, I don't have this problem.
    The modem has 5GHz connection open and I connect the portal to it, and the PS5 is connected to the router via cable. Do you have any experience or solution for this issue?
    Thank you in advance

    • @TheGameFatherUK
      @TheGameFatherUK  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's an odd problem. So, just so I'm clear, when you connect the Portal to your WiFi, it disconnects and won't reconnect until you restart the router? But your phone remains connected without issue even whilst the Portal won't reconnect?
      First thing to check would be which channel the WiFi is using, possibly try a different one. Also, does the Portal have the same issue connecting to other WiFi networks? Will it connect to any or is it just an issue with the one you're using at home?

  • @zoikk4693
    @zoikk4693 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Any particular reason why the resolution quality would be so much better on my Asus Rog Ally running Chiaki4Deck than my portal?
    My portal doesn’t have any disconnection problems but the image quality is more blurry and less clear than on Chiaki.

    • @TheGameFatherUK
      @TheGameFatherUK  หลายเดือนก่อน

      The portal does drop the quality when it thinks the network isn't up to scratch but other than that I couldn't really say with any degree of confidence. I've seen quite a few people though that generally prefer the quality on the likes of the steam deck and the Rog because of the difference in screen quality and refresh rate.

    So, a new router would solve everything, or would settings in the new router need to be changed as well?

    • @TheGameFatherUK
      @TheGameFatherUK  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It 'might' help, especially if your current router is pretty old or one of the cheap and nasty ones that some internet service providers like to give out. However, if your problems are environmental (like WiFi congestion from neighbouring WiFi routers/devices) then you'd likely still need to adjust your WiFi channels etc.

    • @fairozsajahan5251
      @fairozsajahan5251 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@TheGameFatherUK I believe I may have identified the issue. My PS5 console was receiving NAT type 3 because my ISP assigned me a private IP address. According to my research, port forwarding doesn't function properly with private IPs. Consequently, I've reached out to my ISP to request a public static IP address. I'm hopeful that this will resolve my problem.

    • @TheGameFatherUK
      @TheGameFatherUK  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I assume it's CGNAT that your ISP is referring to? If so, that's still a bit odd simply because the command to wake the console up is still reaching it. My ISP also uses CGNAT, it costs me a few extra ££ per month for a public IP, well worth it in my opinion :)

    Hello, my place doesn't support direct wired connection to the PS5. Can I use a mesh node to extend the WiFi coverage, then connect it to the PS5 using the LAN port? Would this enhance performance compared to just connecting the PS5 to WiFi?
    Or I just use the powerline internet instead 🤣
    I greatly appreciate your guidance!

    • @TheGameFatherUK
      @TheGameFatherUK  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey there. I suppose it really depends how different the signal might be from where the node is to where the PS5 is. If it's in the same area of the room, I can't imagine it would make that much difference really since it'll just be the same signal strength going through an ethernet cable.
      Would any of the LAN over power plugs be an option? Some of the newer generation ones are pretty decent. Could one go next to the router and one next to the console? (make sure they are in the wall and not an extension)

      Are you able to try it with a different hotspot just to test against? If it was an issue with 5Ghz on the Portal, I'd expect it to be problematic on all 5Ghz networks. You need to rule out it being an issue specifically with the hotspot you're using.

    Is it better to set it on 160mhz?

    • @TheGameFatherUK
      @TheGameFatherUK  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      160 Mhz will allow for faster network speed, but it also risks increasing the amount of interference. I'd start with 80 Mhz and see how you get on, drop it down to 40 Mhz if you're having issues with latency. If you live in a city or area with a lot of other wireless networks/devices, it might be worth starting on 40 Mhz. You want to prioritise stability over throughput/speed since the Portal doesn't really need lightning fast speeds.

    If my console is hardwired does distance matter? And should I still change wifi settings?

    • @TheGameFatherUK
      @TheGameFatherUK  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Which kind of distance are you referring to? Distance from console to router via cable? Or distance from router to Portal via WiFi? Assuming the 2nd, it 'might' matter but it's very much dependant on your environment. For example, there's a room in my house where WiFi signal goes to die, but it's not far at all from the router. So distance can certainly be a factor, but it's one of many, which is why troubleshooting WiFi can be difficult.

    PS Portal is still a messed up job. I love it when it works but...I am using mesh (wifi router setting) wifi from TP-LINK and everything else is buttery smooth since I acquired these. PS Portal sometimes works without a hitch, on either 2.4 or 5Ghz (with no interference and priority channels and usage from PS5 to Portal) and sometimes its unplayable. Its definitely on SONY's part. Wifi6 on the portal would have gone a long way...but they went cheap...

    • @TheGameFatherUK
      @TheGameFatherUK  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      WiFi 6 would have been better for sure, just for the multiple stream capabilities it offers over 5. However, the Portal does work just fine on WiFi 5 as it needs so little in terms of throughput, it only really needs stability. Unfortunately, stability isn't a simple thing to achieve since there are so many variables at play. It's not on Sony to fix that, it just isn't. They need to sort the refresh rate sync and i think it'd be an improvement to have a browser for public WiFi, but networking is networking. It's extremely rare for my Portal to drop in quality and when it does, there's usually a good explanation and I use a MESH system too.

      There are so many variables it'd be difficult to say with any degree of certainty. Hardwire into the router will help for sure. The rest all are all environmental factors like what are the walls constructed with? How many other wireless devices are connected? How many wireless networks are close to yours?
      Hardwiring is a good first step. Try that first, if there is still lag, move onto the next steps :)

    What's the difference between a router from my ISP and a gaming router?

    • @TheGameFatherUK
      @TheGameFatherUK  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It really depends on what the router is that the ISP provided. Some ISP's provide very cheap routers with very few features on that might help with network stability and priority. A 'gaming' router is just a feature rich router really. Lot of ISP provided routers are usually just fine, but there are so many other factors, like environment, that make a blanket statement like "gaming routers are better because..." a bit useless.

      Interesting problem! Is your portal able to see any 5 Ghz networks at all? Could you test it at another location where there is working 5 Ghz? If it won't see any 5 Ghz anywhere, it might need a support ticket sending into Sony for a potential wireless adapter issue. Testing it in multiple locations will help to rule out any strange compatibility issues with your router specifically.

    I wonder how much data will playstation portal consume when i use home wifi if my home wifi has a cap. I read in reddit, people said that if i play on home wifi it will consume zero to little data since it s on local network, but if its on local network why it depends on internet speed?

    • @TheGameFatherUK
      @TheGameFatherUK  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ok, when you say your home WiFi has a cap, I assume you mean a cap on the amount of data that is used on the internet, not your internal home network? The Portal only requires an initial 'handshake' using your Internet connection if you're playing on your home WiFi, after that it doesn't require any internet traffic at all.
      You can prove this by connecting the portal to your PS5 via your home WiFI, then unplugging your router from the modem/wall which will disconnect your connection to the Internet, but will still allow your home's internal network to function. You'll see that your Portal will carry on working just fine, even though the Internet is disconnected.
      Your internet speed is absolutely irrelevant when it comes to playing at home, on your WiFi. It just needs that initial connection/handshake when it first turns on :)

      @@chron23 Yes, the speed requirements that Sony mention are if you're connecting from outside your network via the internet. Both of them should have the same first 3 blocks of IP addresses, for example your PS5 might have an address of 192.168.1.5 and your Portal may have an address of 192.168.1.10.
