Well, TP Link routers aren't obviously that great considering I spent over $200 on one and I still have constant input lag and stuttering. Absolutely baffling Sony hasn't put out a firmware update for this. Before you say, "oh well your internet isn't fast enough" I have over 400 upload and 33 download, I'm hardwired, I've done the port forwarding and static ip address, set priority devices, and completely remove every device from wifi.
I bought a portal and it's pretty laggy. I bought my brother a portal and his runs with no lag. I'm buying another portal tomorrow and replacing the one I got

This is interesting. I’m currently experiencing a lot of lag and input delay with my portal. It’s very strange as on a few occasions it’s been perfect but majority of the time it’s very laggy and disconnects. I also have the BT smart hub with 500mbps, getting 260mbps to my ps5 but it’s still unplayable on portal

@@PeteTalksTech what baffles my mind is before the portal, I had a Logitech G cloud which is used on my Xbox. Which worked perfectly fine with the current router I have! I find it bizarre that in order for me to find the portal playable I’ll have to spend money on things for it to work!
Definitely! I find Chiaki4deck remote play app on my ROG Ally and especially my Steam Deck OLED is a much better experience than on my Portal which is insane as the Portal is Sony’s proprietary hardware to, erm, remote play haha 🙈🙈

can someone help me, my remote play works from my work wifi on my pc but it doesnt on my portal. it works fine when the ps5 and portal are on the same network at home but i wanna play it on my break at work and it doesn't work please help me

Thank you for the reply. I’m currently using a wifi 6 from asus which is ax rt55. I have 100mbps download and upload. I still get stutter and lag every time I play games even the single player one. Portal is amazing device and I really love to play handheld despite of that issues. I’m really hope I can also fix that issues as well.
I use my portal when I'm staying out in hotels for work, and the delay is absolutely atrocious. I've got a sky router with an 80mbps down and 20 upload, and my ps is hard wired. Does this router improve quality when not on a local network?
Great question Jake! I haven’t tried this new router outside the home - personally I just feel the Portal is too unreliable to use away from home, and I’d much highly suggest getting a Steam Deck OLED or ROG Ally (both of which I cover extensively here on the channel) esp if you play a lot away from home… You could always get the router and carefully unbox from Amazon, try it out and if you’re still unhappy then return? Amazon are pretty great with returns 👍
I grabbed a Portal the other day and i'm having input lag issues for sure, mainly when rotating the camera. games like fallout 4, witcher 3 are pretty much unplayable. I am on the 5ghz band but yeah, input lag is a problem. Going to keep fiddling but if I can't improve it, I may have to return this.

I setup my oled steam deck thanks to your video on Chiaki4deck and I tried playing Fallout 4, Witcher 3 and Astrobot on both the Steam deck and my new PS portal and the result? - The Steam Deck ran the games better. The portal was okay but in like fo4 and witcher, when you rotate the camera there is a VERY noticable lag which hampers gameplay. The streaming on the Steamdeck was far smoother. I might return my 2 day old Portal then but do you know why the Deck is better than Sony's own hardware?
Steve, this has baffled me why chiaki is SO much better than the dedicated Portal ON THE SAME WIFI NETWORK!! I have 2 theories: 1. Portal only has the slower 5 WiFi hardware but devices like the Ally and Steam Deck have WiFi 6E which is much faster 2. I believe Portal runs games at like 59.94MHz instead of 60MHz for some reason resulting in micro stutters Yep, baffling I know!!

I love the large screen and feel of it, but if it still lags in games then why keep it.
Yeah, that’s what’s SO frustrating - LOVE the 8 inch screen and I’d even say it’s the comfiest handheld even more than Ally X and SD OLED, put the micro stutters and lag severely let it down, yep I’m 99% sure is the older WiFi 5 chip 👍
Portal owner here. Havent used it for like 2 months because of the lag. Yet i go to my girlfriends house and use it on her internet allegedly worse than mine yet it worked flawlessly. I might buy this tp link

Okay so I've sorted it all out took like 3 hours. And the final outcome is... The same No improvement whatsoever Will play around with it the next few days otherwise I'm sending it back

Hi mate - how do you find EA FC? I have a TP link router and over 500mphs speed but still find it almost unplayable when playing division rivals etc....its not stuttering its more the responsiveness just isnt there.
Great question Urban! Even with this solution in this vid, games like FC 24 that require ultra fast responsiveness I find is still a much better experience playing directly on the PS5 console than on the Portal, plus the very small players just look so much better on a 4K tv… I find the Portal is much better for single player slower experiences like Alan Wake 2 etc 👍
I really wanted the Portal until I learned I can't use my bluetooth earbuds on it and have to use the Sony PS brand earbuds,.. which didn't seem too bad until I found out the Sony earbuds are $200. Lol. I can use my earbuds on my ROG Ally and Lenovo Go. I can't imagine why Sony would make it so you can't use any earbuds but there's on the Portal.
I only have 60mbps internet download speed And my router is Archer ax23 and i bought it in walmart for 25$ only. I don't have any issue with the connection with my ps portal and no lag at all, It is very smooth to play 60fps.

So i have Xfinity internet, and i paused some devices that i dont commonly use as well as disabled that HDCP or whatever it is, and that seemed to fix it. Im thinking the more devices you have connected to your wifi, the more your portal will lag.
@PeteTalksTech also downloading things while you're playing with the Portal will cause lag, too. They really didn't put much thought into these factors.
I've had stutters every 10 seconds or so. Do you have that too? I notice it mostly in 60 fps games. Every 10 seconds it will stutter for like 4-5 seconds and then its back to 60. I still live at my parents though, so maybe my network isnt set up right. I am moving to my own place soon so I hope that will solve everything. At home I now download at like 80mbps, in my new house its probably around 600! But did you see any of these stutters which I'm talking about or maybe before you bought the new router etc.?

Speed isn't nearly as important as ping with Remote play. Your networks quality and stability are key to the portal/Remote play devices working well. Lucky to have 900mbps download 900mbps upload and 5ms ping now i have upgraded my Router from the ISP provided router average around 850mbps on each and 5 to 10ms ping beforehand i was averaging around 600mbps on each and around 15 to 20ms ping which wasn't bad by any means but notice a lot less frame drops stutters and image pixelation since the upgrade. Good luck bud hope u get it working properly it's a great device. Plus i can now Remote play with the portal away from home using public WiFi or my Phones 5g with far far less issues than before away from home i would suggest single player games only unless on a dam good network. Also have no issues at home on games like Fifa - GT7 - Helldivers 2 (Don't play COD myself but would not recommend something that fast paced and competitive using the portal)
@TheEminemShow Does nothing that you cant do by just making sure TV/Monitor isn't set to turn on during boot up that way it's not outputting an image on screen and streaming an image at the same time.

Hey David, I don’t have a Sky hub, but the when we were with Virgin I had to make the router they provided go into ‘modem mode’ in settings, then plug our third party router into the Virgin hub so this may be the case with your Sky hub… let us know how you go on, hope you manage to get it working! 🙌
I had issues when i first bought it but after changing virgin media hub settings running only on the 5ghz band also adding 2 boosters on a mesh network. I havent noticed any lag since and ive caught up on so many games ive missed.

Hey Graeme, great question - if it’s free from Sky then I don’t think it would work very well - these basic routers supplied by our ISPs just don’t cut it when using the Portal and I’d definitely instead recommend a decent third party router like the TP Link in this vid, let us know how ya get on! 🙌
Hey Huskers yes we really do need a router that allows to split the 2.4 and 5GHz signals to get the most optimisation for the Portal - like the vid demonstrates the basic routers provided from our Internet Service Providers just don’t cut it to use with the Portal, hope this helps!
@@PeteTalksTecheven if we have an Orbi 6 mesh network? Router is damn near top of the line but doesn’t allow you to choose which network. Just puts the device on 5ghz if it can use it. And if not pushes it to 2.4

Hey GB, yep I think it would! Plus if you buy it from Amazon and carefully unpack it, you always have the option to return if it makes zero difference, but it’s massively improved it for me! I’m also going to make a vid on how a TP-Link WiFi extender has helped even more soon so stay tuned! 👀
Not surprising, those free included routers are terrible. Even more so now a days with 15 connected devices at any given time. I personally prefer ASUS brand routers, but they are more expensive. TP Link is a good alternative.
For a guy that claims that he has a tech channel you don’t seem to understand the difference between megabytes and megabits. Mbps means megaBITS MBPS means megaBYTES There is a huge difference between those two measurements. Please learn them.

Just want to say, I went out and got this exact TP link router and it did absolutely nothing to improve stuttering on my ps portal.
I have a good router with 5 GHz connexion, still lagging, this portal is a screeny shit

What worked for me was pulling out the HDMI cable. Before that the game will freeze for about 2 seconds periodically.

Unplug your HDMI cable from the TV before playing on your portal

It was not my Roota. I’m still having lag bad. Please help me fix.

So do you have to have a router that creates its own 5ghz network? My Orbi network is a dualband router… and doesn’t allow me to separate them.
Hey Huskers yes we really do need a router that allows to split the 2.4 and 5GHz signals to get the most optimisation for the Portal - like the vid demonstrates the basic routers provided from our Internet Service Providers just don’t cut it to use with the Portal, hope this helps!
@@PeteTalksTecheven if we have an Orbi 6 mesh network? Router is damn near top of the line but doesn’t allow you to choose which network. Just puts the device on 5ghz if it can use it. And if not pushes it to 2.4

@@PeteTalksTech portal seems to work just fine on my mesh network. No issues and I did not change anything on my network. Haven’t had any latency issues at all. Even played some shooters with no issues.
Your reckon this would work with Sky Broadband, my Portal is pretty much unplayable.
Hey GB, yep I think it would! Plus if you buy it from Amazon and carefully unpack it, you always have the option to return if it makes zero difference, but it’s massively improved it for me!

If i use 5ghz unfortunately the connecrtion is much worse for other rooms in the house (I guess i have thick walls haha).

Not surprising, those free included routers are terrible.
Even more so now a days with 15 connected devices at any given time.
I personally prefer ASUS brand routers, but they are more expensive. TP Link is a good alternative.

MBPS means megaBYTES
There is a huge difference between those two measurements. Please learn them.

@@PeteTalksTech No worries. For the record I never said “tech expert”….I said “tech channel”. So many people make that mistake with the small and cap letters in tech terms so I always nip it in the bud. It really make a huge difference.
