  • The PlayStation Portal isn't capable of displaying HDR video, so why is the PS5 sending an HDR signal? Let's look into it. Originally tested/filmed on software 2.0.6, but the issue is still present on 3.0.0.

    This HDR issue (and the 60fps stutter issue) still persists after the 3.0.0 update on June 16.

    I just turned the hdr on my ps5 off, dont really need it and also i think the portal doesnt support it. Anyways people might hate this gadget, i am a Father and i barely got to play on my TV. Since i got the portal im beating all the games i never had time to, or couldnt because of the tv.

    The PS5 is beautiful and so is the Portal. And so much more ergonomic than any other handheld.

    The only point i disagree with is your comments on ps5 line being ugly and psportal being ugly,
    Absolutely not i have PS3, PS4, PS5, Vita, PSPortal also have PS3 headset, PS4 headset, PS5 headset
    And i can confidently say PS5 lineup of devices are the msot eye pleasing and beautiful
    PSportal looked weird at the beginning and now i absolutely love, its the best handheld ive ever used, a controller sliced in half is the best thing and i love playing on it vs i ever did on switch, vita, 3DS. Ergonomics is S tier on PSPortal

    In my personal opinion, I’d have to disagree with you on the new generation of PlayStation’s aesthetics. I am a huge fan! In the new generation of gaming tech, the PS5 is such a step up in terms of gaming quality. I feel like the design of the whole ps5 family is futuristic and SO sleek! Having the Pulse Elite headset while playing on my Portal is just *chefs kiss*
    Again, personal opinion though haha. Everyone is different

    Only thing I did to optimize my portals performance was disable HDMI link, I didn’t unplug my HDMI cable or lower or turn off hdr, vrr,allm or 120hrz. You probably got a bad unit. I Can understand not being able to access screen and video settings, but I do not have any blow out issues now or even before the last update. My portal almost never lags or disconnects either.
    Just for reference my tv is a Sony x85k. Also before I disabled hdmi link my portal would not stay connected at all, so I really can’t agree with you on most of this video.

    Great video. Hopefully they fix this issue soon. Despite the highlight blowout, I still actually prefer the colors on the HDR vs non-HDR modes when viewed on the Portal. Wish they sourced an LCD panel that supported HDR, but maybe that’ll come in the future as well.

    I noticed that the lighting looks much worse in Rise of the Ronin when played on the Portal. My solution for that game is to lower the Portal brightness and then adjust the brightness within the game itself. Helps a bit.

    i’m so late on the ps portal game, just got mine recently and noticed right away the hdr issue when I play gta v or spiderman. I turned hdr off on my ps5 and the image is of course fixed. Thanks for confirming in this video that it is not my unit’s problem 😅 Just need to keep jn mind to put those settings back on when playing on the tv which I think is only 10-20% of my time anyway. One question though, will setting the display output to 1080p instead of 4k affect the stream performance? I’d like to try this especially if i’m going to travel and use just my mobile data to play.

    The HDR on games will turn off automatically sometimes when you remote play with Portal but not always so it’s correctly switching to SDR at times but seems like a software bug where it is not always switching right. It’s not horrible in some games like it’s trying to make it like auto HDR like on windows and Xbox which can look bad also depending what is being shown or focused on. Yeah just adding access to PS5 system HDR on/off would help or just switch it off always when portal connects, I actually want it in the quick menu as a toggle. I remember there being a bug like this on PS5 early on with some HDR it wouldn’t always switch on or off on certain games but it never happens to me now. I don’t think it’s a TV problem, I think it’s software. I had that same problem when I streamed video on my tv the portal quality would suffer but I wasn’t wired at the time and my router didn’t separate 5 and 2.5 signals when I changed that everything worked much better, because I was having problems remote playing Steamlink and other things at times also.

    Thanks for the video. I have the same problem and it’s driving me nuts! My PS5 is connected an avr (denon x3800h) then to sony A95L oled tv. Both avr and tv support hdr 4k 120hz vrr allm etc…., games that support HDR are broken on the portal (whites blown out) and the only solution I found was to manually turn off HDR each time I want yo use the portal (this is unacceptable for an official remote play device)! In addition, I use the device when I am away from my PS5, I can’t go to the screen settings to turn off HDR! So I must remember to turn off HDR if I am planning to take the portal with me every time 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️

    I love the ps portal. I’d definitely take a ps portal pro that can download games any day. I don’t experience the hdr problem much, but I would like for the ps5 to be able to detect when you’re using the portal and just automatically set the settings for optimization. Then revert back when remote play isn’t happening

      Example cyberpunk. When playing on the TV, it is set to HDR in game. (My choice). If I switch to the portal while playing, I am still able to toggle HDR In game on the portal (tv now off). If I turn on the portal from a "in rest mode" PS5. Without the tv turning on. Cyberpunk will have the HDR option disabled.

    I knew about this when it first come to android you have to keep the ps5 in the hdr calibration menu and change the brightness when the the phone syncs to remote play its a way of forcing it abit like a hack to calibrate the hdr but i worked this out years and years ago before this playstation portal came out its just the way hdr is and i dont think they updated it since

    People need to understand HDR is not just the signal, the games need to know if HDR is supported for the rendering process.. converting HDR image to SDR (like Portal and Remote Play is doing) is not the same as rendering the image in SDR from the beginning. That's why Sony must fix this by temporary disabling HDR when non-HDR device is connected with Remote Play

  • @Teja
    @Teja 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    yo bro an update, i literally updated today to latest firmware on PS Portal and i can confirm that HDR IS being automatically switched off.
    I tested it on Stellar Blade demo. I was playing on TV 2 days and in GAME settings not PS5 settings, there’s is an option to turn HDR ON in GAME settings, even if u had HDR on in PS5 settings, you still have to turn it on again in GAME settings.
    and guess what? i tried it on Portal yesterday, and when I went to GAME settings the HDR is off and unchangeable to ON. Its also in RED.
    So that means the game detected that PORTAL is not a HDR device, which literally means PS5 DOES have the capability to inform the game that its connected to a Portal and it DOESNT support HDR
    please try it yourself! Download Stellar blade demo !! this is good news for us, hopefully more devs utilise this!

    • @joelmeza123
      @joelmeza123 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes. It will be disabled but you have to turn on your ps5 with the portal while the ps5 is in rest mode and without your tv turning on. Or else it'll detect the hdmi and you'll be able to toggle the HDR on the portal in game.

    • @kacboy
      @kacboy  7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yeah, this seems to be the case for me. If the TV is off when the PS5 turns on from rest mode it usually starts the Portal without HDR. But if the TV was on it will be in HDR. So the problem is more on the PS5 side rather the Portal itself. :(

    I like my purchase so far. I enjoy the pick up and play nature, but I am starting to feel the buyer's remorse of no bluetooth. I have tons of wireless headsets and earbud options, and having to pack a pair of wired earbuds like its 2005 is mildly infuriating. I refuse to pay airpods price for pulse explore, when I'd only use them for the portal. And I wholeheartedly agree on the design language of this generation. As soon as a shell swap opportunity arises for this thing, I'm buying and getting straight to work. Two tone black and white has never been something I liked. Great video!
