The Playstation Portal is a handheld device that connects to your Playstation 5 and streams whatever games are on there directly to the Portal. It’s a divisive piece of tech with people either loving or hating it.
This review is less about the hardware and specifications and more about the experience and convenience of having a dedicated device for remote play. The biggest question being… Does the Playstation Portal offer a better experience than just playing on your phone or other devices via the free remote play app?

@@rtara11 You can 'wake it up' from rest mode via remote play (there is a setting to enable that on the console). But it has to be fully on for the games to actually play and stream.
See better reviews then. Every review I've seen so far has been balanced. You had dislike the reviews that actually explain the negatives instead of just saying "No Bluetooth" and moving on or saying "feels exactly the same to me" despite there being almost 80ms of added lag.

This was everything I wanted to know about the Portal in an extremely well-produced, entertaining, and thorough video. Loved it! I smashed that Like button only 2 minutes in, but testing the device in the middle of nowhere, sitting on that ledge... now that is what I call dedication. I just had to subscribe.

The most reasonable and fair review yet. It’s all about your home network quality and the data you provided regarding latency and distance from router was excellent. I suggest you do a separate video to demonstrate how to fix your home network.

Best review I’ve seen yet. Well rounded and balanced. Would love to be able to have one but didn’t preorder as I didn’t think they’d be this popular & I missed out on the restock on Wednesday. I had it in my basket, clicked to pay & while it was processing, it went out of stock! I wonder how many of these units sold are by bots and scalpers hoping to make profit but I won’t pay them over RRP for it as it only encourages them.
Ouch, that is some rough luck with the basket right there! I remember having the same issue trying to get a PS5 when they first came out. It's gross how many scalpers seem to get hold of, eBay is a horror show at the moment. Hope you manage to get hold of one soon! Thanks for the kind words 😊

Thanks you! It's definitely happiest at home, but it's fine for the most part out and about. If you haven't already, it's worth trying remote play on the free app on your phone just to check in advance that it'll be smooth sailing :)

SURE ITS A SUCESS IF YOU PREFER TO PLAY ON THE TOILET AT YOUR HOUSE. IT USELESS OTHER WISE. THE PRICE IS GOOD FOR WHAT IT IS BECUAS EOF THE DUAL SENSE CONTROLLERS AND THE SCREEN BUT THATS IT. ITS PURE DESIGN AND NO FUNCTION
I got this to play around my house when I have family over and I have to sleep with my mom in her room for outside gaming I have my switch this overall does get input lag if you have ghetto cheap internet

Great Review, I love the Portal. I agree with the pushing an update to show the battery percentage instead of the bars, however I found a way to view the percentage. The Portal will need to be completely turned off and and connected to a charger, and when you press the power button once it will show the battery with the percentage.
That is not something I knew! Thanks for the info there :) That makes me even more sure that they will offer it as an option at some point too!
Great fairness and dedication, such a thoroughly in-depth review, you did better than A LOT of "famous" channels who just labeled it as "unuseful" and call it a day, without even trying to put it in the best possibile conditions to use it properly. You deserve wayyyyyy more subscribers!

Good reivew having tested it in several scenarios. It's not a perfect device but it does what it sets out to do. My main gripes with it are the lack of standard Bluetooth support, no support for PS+ streaming and the lack of web browser to log into public WiFi.
Well, I agree with you on the bluetooth so I've been testing a 3.5mm bluetooth transmitter on the Portal as a way to add it yourself. Should have something uploaded about it tomorrow night :) As for the browser, I hope Sony have felt enough heat about it to add it in an update, it's really needed imo!
The Portal does exactly what Sony said it would do. I would call that a win.

It really seems like this device is almost perfect for your use case. You also have a great home wifi network and a phone that lets you access public wifi. Thanks for providing the network stats for all of the locations where you used it. Everyone's experience will vary based on that factor it would seem. I think you gave the device a fair review and convenience is definitely worth something in life.

Tbh I play on my portal just about as much as I play on my PS5 at least 40% of the time when you include at work and at home. These days I only use my PS5 for competitive games. Imo there's something addictive about playing on the portal
This has been my experience, I absolutely love it and I’m playing nearly every game on it. Just if I want to play online with an fps I’m going hop behind my monitor
It's definitely a win as far as convenience goes. Some game play on it better than others, GT7 I find a bit fiddly with the smaller sticks compared to the full size dual sense ones. But D4 and Spider-Man 2 have been mega on it!
Makes no difference whether I play on the TV or Portal when it comes to FPS, I am terrible on both 😅
It’s what we wanted the vita to be design wise . Not so much software and hardware wise
@@TheGameFatherUK it’s funny, I’ve been playing a lot of gt7 on the portal and for me it’s been fine! I honestly don’t notice the stick size all that much. I did watch some videos on gta and someone mentioned when using a controller joystick to press forward continually then roll the stick left and right to turn, I can say that made a really big difference for me! Last time I played a GT game was on ps2 I think and I’m pretty sure I just used the dpad. Most games have felt really good, with the exception of destiny pvp and cyberpunk. While cyberpunk is passable, online multiplayer on such a small screen and even with a tiny amount of input delay can really be felt! But for $200 it’s been an awesome experience, it’s so nice to sit in the living room with my family and still play something in the background. Since my phone is an iPhone mini remote play was way too small on that screen, and my other option was my MacBook Air but that’s just way too many moving pieces and I rarely did it for that reason. Portal for me was a great purchase.
This is the most informative and objective review I have seen yet. You completely answered my most critical question…how does the portal play using remote play. I tried backbone and did not have a great experience. This gives me hope and I will go back and take a review of my network before purchasing this device. Thank you so much man!!

I think there is a misunderstanding in regards to the Networkspeedtests. Mbps (MegaBITS per sec) != MBps (MegaBYTES per sec) BYTES is a unit of data composed of eight binary digit (8 bits). So for example: the roughly 100 Mbits measure on the mountainside are actually 100/8 MBits which is roughly 12MBytes per second and not 100 MBytes per second as mentioned in the video.

With regards to public WiFi, change the mac address on your phone to match that of your Portal, go through TOS etc and your Portal should connect!!
There actually is a browser on the Portal but it's currently locked to pre set adresses...

The portal makes it easier to grab and play. Have played on the portal even when I’ve been alone in the living room. Fewer steps required. That was always the biggest problem with remote play in other devices. Great device for home. Screen is pretty fantastic for a lcd .

I always think it’s funny when people watch a video and comment on a something they have no interest in. Pretty cheap item and it’s sold out.
@aaronwalsh8469 1) It's sold out because Sony limited the amounts they shipped. my local target got 4 portals total, sold out online so 0 hit the shelf before they even opened for the day. Same as my 2 local Gamestops, they got 5 and 4 respectively.
2) He could've found out it was useless AFTER watching this video... You don't know if he had his mind made up before he clicked on this video at all.
Agree! It's definitely more comfortable at home and you're right about the LCD screen too. It's been great to have around the house over the last week :D
@@ATLsF1N3ST91my guy it was released today that in over 4 countries it outsold more copies than the series x . They made plenty . Go bitch somewhere else . It sold out because it's a solid product . I spend 200$ on a night out to myself . 200 for a dedicated device with nice speakers, ,a 9 hour battery life ,fits in a bag , and frees up my phone . Yeah def worth it and I've been loving it .

As a portal owner and someone who’s watched every portal video on YT, this is the truest depiction of what it’s like having the portal. Ive played 15 games of Madden online and haven’t had a single issue. I could barely make it through an online game when using remote play on my M1 iPad Pro. The Portal is already the greatest handheld ever made
For the price double it and give us the portal pro basically a portable digital ps5 1440p oled display 1 tb internal storage with ability to upgrade the storage . 6-8 hr battery life . And ability to replace the sticks or use Hall effect sticks and triggers . I would gladly pay 399-499 for that they should call it the portal pro or re brand PlayStation vue to this potential handheld of mine . Or simply call it the ps go aka PlayStation go

Word to the wise: *Try remote play on any other device i.e. a phone or tablet THEN try justifying this purchase.*
I do not own PS Portal, but 75% of the time i will remote play from ipad. Had to carry around 2 device instead of only 1 is a Plus for me.
Plus you cannot play comfortably on bed or couch when using ipad to remote play.
I would love PS Portal but is not on sale in Malaysia 🇲🇾

This is something I fully agree with. I think the vast majority of people that are having issues within their home are due to poor WiFi coverage and/or bad configs. The app is a nice way of testing it before the expense and potential disappointment.
Tried it and don’t like remote play on any other device….(I don’t like the backbone controller and it’s inconvenient to have to carry around my IPad and dual sense controller if I want to use remote play outside of my home). Portal is perfect for me.

Well, I followed your steps with the Portal and setting up static IPs from the linked video. Now I have a much better experience within my home network. Also, I set up the Portal's network manually. Much smoother now and less lagging. Thank you.

Great video and sums up my experience with the Portal well. I can't emphasize enough that the simplicity/convenience of the Portal is what elevates it above other devices I have that support remote play. As demonstrated in the video, you just wake the Portal + press the PS button and it connects to the PS5. That reason alone has me using this device way more than my other remote play capable devices. I'm actually playing my PS5 more than ever now. It's also a much more comfortable device than my other handhelds (Steam Deck, Switch, Retroid Pocket, etc.).
I plan to only use the Portal on my home network. I have a mesh wifi system with four hubs around my home + workshop. I have a PS5 connected to one of the wifi hubs via ethernet. With this setup, I'm having a great experience playing anywhere in my home.

I’m having a blast with my PSP 2023 whether I’m at home, work, and dining at Panera for example. 😂
I initially couldn’t connect to one of two PS5s I have at home due to it being solely connected via wifi; however, I purchased a decent WiFi extender from Amazon during Cyber Monday and now it connects flawlessly anywhere at home. The wired PS5 connects instantly to my Portal, naturally.
