    I compare the new TaylorMade P770 Iron against the very popular TaylorMade P790 Iron looking at the different in looks and also performance all measured using TrackMan.

    I made the decision to trade my P760s to the P770s and finally played my first round with them yesterday and loved them. I owned the P790 before the P760s and I just couldn’t get used to the size but still wanted more distance and forgiveness. The P770s are very similar to the P760s size with a lot of added benefits for my game. I picked up at least 8 yards but didn’t lose spin or stopping power.

    I'm waiting for my 790s to arrive from Taylormade and while I wait really enjoyed this particular video. Very comprehensive and just what I was looking for. Or course I only hit the 790s during the (very comprehensive) fitting but right now I feel like I made the prefect choice.

    I bought the 2019 P790’s earlier this year and when I first saw the new P770’s I felt immediately envious. Love the look and the higher lofts of the P770’s but definitely not worth the upgrade for me. If your irons are a few years old and you’re looking to upgrade however, then the P770’s would definitely be my choice.

  • @joedoaks6517
    @joedoaks6517 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Michael, I remember that you were a big fan of the original P770. The new P770 is the same size, identical offset, and slightly strongly lofts (0.5 degrees) in some irons, but not across the board. I would be interested in seeing a comparison between the original P770's and the new 770's. Because the specs are so similar, it would be interesting to see the influence of hollow body and foam vs a non-hollow bodied iron of nearly identical spec.

    I will stick with the 790 s
    I hit this high enough and achieve 6500 spin from the 7 iron. Very good irons and a big improvement in my opinion from the old p790

      From address the 790 has a tad more square looking toe but that was all I could see. I couldn’t notice the 0.1 ~ 0.2 mm difference in offset either. Both top lines are thin enough for me. I need to check the soles again but I bet they’re very close.

    For most people without the speed of Michael, I would have thought that breaking the set at 7i would work by carrying P770 7i-PW and carrying P790 6i & 7i but strengthen the loft a little (maybe only by 0.5 degree), that way your P790 7i would be the equivalent of the P770 6i

    I have both the 790s and the MCs (which I believe has around the same lofts as the 770s?) and I found that the stronger loft on the 790s only added around 5 to 7 yards on center sweet spot shots for the shorter irons....

    One thing I don't understand in comparisons though, if there's such a different in the loft, then why not compare an 8 iron of the 790 to a 7 of the 770?

  • @GRIFF22

    They're just far too expensive. Just can't justify the price on these, especially when the JPX 921 will be a good £400 cheaper per set

    Now, bend either iron so it has the same loft and off course have the same length of the shaft and we'll call it a day. After all, the P790 7 iron is pretty much a P770 6,5 iron. I also am a firm believer in the old way of benchmarking ballflights in using the 5 iron instead of 7 iron. Both in terms of spin and what kind of smash factor we get from it. You play darts with a 7 iron in modern golf, while the 5 iron is actually useable from the tee as well. If dispersion is a thing of importance (which it should be for any golfer), any golfer under 7 hcp should consider a blade or at the very least an MC as their scoring irons. These two sets should in no way be combined as they are for two different types of swings. Now, if TaylorMade sold the P790 as Ping does with different lofts, things would be different. Just my .02 cents.

  • @William45ish
    @William45ish 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Good video bud. I still have my original 2017 p790 irons. I chose them as I wanted better performance and forgiveness from a traditional looking iron. Yes, I did find the lofts a bit strong for my liking, so I had the lofts weakened by a couple of degrees by a professional fitter. (ie 7 iron from 30.5 to 32.5.) They now give me the gapping yardage numbers and the confidence that I want.
    Why pay £1300 for less forgiveness from a smaller headed iron? It’s just a matter of cosmetics and looks as the P770’s will not be as forgiving as the P790’s. You can see that by your dispersion. It doesn’t make sense to me! What makes good sense, is do what I did for a fraction of the cost to your P790’s. Weaken them or just leave them alone and enjoy probably the best iron Taylormade ever made, as every new club in this range are judged against the P790 every time and it holds up against anything else out there.

    • @ben1ben2ben1
      @ben1ben2ben1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Calling the P790s the best iron Taylormade ever made is fucking ridiculous. Every club works different for different people. Obviously a low handicapper is not going to think the P790s are close to the best iron Taylormade ever made. The p770 gives you much better feel and doesn't have the flyers the P790s are known for.
      And you really think the fucking ‎P7MC or P7MB is compared to the freaking P790s and doesn't hold up haha? If you are a good ball striker you definitely don't want the p790s. And actually in most comparisons the same thing is said. P770s are better for better players and p790s are better for not as good players. AT the end of the day the p790sare basically a cool looking game improvement iron

  • @taffdavies2265

    As a 9 HCP I just don´t feel comfortable with the huge gaps in between the P790. It´s also really hard to get a good yardage gap towards your specialty wedges. Also I don´t feel like most fairly better players need that much help with the 9, 8 and 7 irons. As a split set I think these clubs make a tone of sense though.

  • @wallstreetoneil
    @wallstreetoneil 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    In a bizarre way, the increased loft (which should be for better players) gets exposed at your swing speeds because it results in the ball with too high a peak height to control - i.e. 120 vs 100 feet - thus you can see why given hot faces manufacturers decreased lofts to avoid moonballs. I was encouraged about the P770s until I saw this test - it reminds me of the 1st gen Titleist AP2s which had tungsten low down in the PW, 9 & 8 and these irons flew too high to control for the Pros - and that is the thing they fixed in the 2nd gen AP2s

    In my personal testing with specced up 770s vs 790 I found that it was very impractical. Having a distance iron in that kind of a package just produced numbers all over the place. If you are a good enough ball striker to want a club that small, you probably don’t need jacked up lofts and speed foam.
