A Late Summer Pruning of My Ficus Bonsai, The Bonsai Zone, Aug 2020

  • I'm pruning one of my Ficus microcarpa bonsai after letting it grow freely for the summer.
    This tree is the one called "Fancy" and it is one of the Ficus Sisters, two trees that looked almost identical when I bought them as small trees in a 4" pot. One is getting a more plain styling treatment, the other a bit more fancy.
    We are getting more fruit trees planted in the orchard with just 7 more to go for this year!
    Lots of tree updates today and a quick update of the plant room.

    Whenever I see your collection with massive bonsai structure in your every plant and find the playlist for the same plant till 2014 I astonished and awkward to comment because your passion about bonsai and creative effort has already build a Temple, Church and Mosque all over the TH-cam channel.
    Nigel what about the humidity rate now and all over the year in your place. Please let me know the humidity level of your place all round the year and now. Because you water your bonsai tree 2 to 3 times and also you water in heavy volume .

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Deb, time flies by at an incredible rate these days! We live in between the Great Lakes so the summers are humid in Southwestern Ontario!
      The normal humidity levels throughout the year at Canada's largest cities are listed below.
      The tables give the daily relative humidity, averaged for the year. The morning humidity readings are taken at 6:00 am local standard time. The afternoon humidity is for 3:00 pm local standard time.
      Relative humidity measures the actual amount of moisture in the air as a percentage of the maximum amount of moisture the air can hold. All the numbers here are based on weather data collected from 1981 to 2010.

And, what will happen with the fruit from the trees when they are mature? Community food bank? The ficus looks GOOD after the trim. Will you bring those Kapok trees indoors this winter? Great updates on the trees.

    Nigel, big fan, i watch all of your videos when they come out, they are really relaxing. You might remember me from other comments.
    I really love the way since you started making videos, you have never failed to cover the basics of the techniques you are employing without assuming that people have watched all of your previous videos. A great example is the way you always briefly explain directional pruning. When styling my own trees, i always feel inspired by your way of doing things, for landscaping in penjing with a sense of scale with paths for example, and ground cover with tiny broken branches, root pruning scrupulously.
    Please tell me this; where can i get a soft little bonsai rake like yours? i have a Japanese one and its great for collected rough material, however it scratches the roots of my small trees, and i end up using a wooden skewer. I have loved your rake since i first seen it. i've looked at zen garden kits etc, to no avail.
    Thanks for putting out the videos Nigel, they truly make my day!

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Jacob, I bought the root rake at a second hand store over 25 years ago. I've never seen another like it. I'm hoping to get it 3D modeled this winter so people can 3D print one for themselves.
      I'll make a video about this soon!

    • @MrTerrortubby
      @MrTerrortubby 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nigel Saunders, The Bonsai Zone
      I eagerly await! Hopefully I will be able to contact the guy in charge of 3D printing in university. Finishing my masters now, but I can still use facilities for 5 years.
      By the way! I 3D printed a pot here in the U.K. it is white but it’s looking really nice with a wild willow penjing (Tiny leaves, beautiful trees). I think you’d like it if I could show you, it’s actually really nice. I’d love to send you some cuttings of this willow next year too, I’d propagate them and send you them, they’re vigorous but great little trees. They make really nice little penjing landscaping trees.
      Let me know if your interested in seeing my planting and/or having some little trees sent over?

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Usually the new growth comes closer to the tip of the branch and the directional pruning keeps the new growth coming in the right direction. and as you say, any unwanted shoots are removed when young.

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I add a very small amount of fertilizer to my water every time I water the tree. This small amount won't hurt newly developing roots and it provides the tree all the elements it needs for growth, other than sun and air! If you notice a tree is growing weakly and the leaves are looking pale and not the normal green colour, it usually needs fertilizer. Too much heat and sun can cause a similar look.

    Hi Nigel ! :) is this ficus tree coming from multiple cuttings? seeds? Thanks ! Take care

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is a single tree the aerial roots have grown down alongside the trunk and it now looks like a fusion project, but it's just a single tree covered in aerial roots that have fused together over time.

      It is a single tree, it started out as a Ginseng style Ficus, but it didn't have the grafted foliage on the top. I have a video that shows the tree in the early stages...

    Amazing how you give out the details of pruning, how to and what to prune. Really love to watch your updates.
    Had this question about your ficus leaves looking a bit bigger, is it because you haven't done defoliation or it is something else?

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The large leaves are mainly from allowing the tree to grow unrestricted for the summer. The new leaves are small and then as the branch gains vigor the leaves get larger the more the branch extends. With more pinching and pruning, the tree can get very small leaves, this will weaken the tree and it should be done mainly for bonsai shows.

      We ordered a lot of tree seeds that year, the Plum Cherries were the only ones that germinated. We planted them in spring in the large greenhouse on sight at the Local community food center. We just placed the seeds in soil and the came up!
