  • I'm getting a Natal Ficus cutting off to a good start with a new pot, soil and a radial root base!
    My Tiger Bark Ficus also gets a good pruning top and bottom as today's update!

    Huge improvement when you removed the two straight branches from the trunk. Looks like an (albeit lop-sided) angel with it's arms/wings spread right back leaning out off the rock. Makes for a nice shohin.

    Thanks for another great video! But I do miss the outdoor studio. It made it easier to see what you were working on. The hard shadows and green backdrop make it more difficult to see the tree and your work.

    When you said that you would remove problem branches on the Tiger, I was sure you wouldn’t stop at that. It was interesting to follow your confident evaluation and reshaping of the structure. Bonsai is much like stone sculpting, in that one removes bits and pieces to gradually reveal the object hidden inside.

  • @katyb2793
    @katyb2793 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'm not sure if this is a silly question, but is there a specific reason why you plant seeds and cuttings in bonsai soil and not normal garden soil? 🌱

    • @lukasmihara
      @lukasmihara 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I believe a soil with few nutrients/fertilizer works better for developing roots. Too much nutrients/fertilizer could be harmful for young roots and you additionally don't want the soil to be constantly wet, which could result in rotting roots, but rather a more free draining soil like the bonsai soil.

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    @empret7704 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    My Ficus that look almost like yours all the branches died due to frost. I thought it died completely but when I took it out of the pot I saw new fine roots so I gave it new soil and wait. Almost at the bottom of that thick stem there is two buts. What I want to know do I remove the dead branches? If you give me your email address again I can send you pictures. We sorted the Afra out by just moving it to a different spot... thanks for that advice.

      Nigel, I have a little ficus about 15 years old. I took it from my late father’s tree that he had growing in a big can. It was just a baby in 2008. It was just a stick I put in a coffee mug for couple years and lost leaves a few times. I put it in a small pot but it needs help. If I take a video of it, could you possibly ID it? It has fat bulging roots above the soil. I am going to turn it into a bonsai with a new pot. Hope I do not kill it. 😬

    • @entyropy3262
      @entyropy3262 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cut all leaves in half or if it is very healthy cut off all leaves. Repeat every year if the tree is healthy and it's summer. If that specimen can grow smaller leaves - it will.
      Never heard of ficus panda I am sure that is not an actual ficus specimen.

    • @lukasmihara
      @lukasmihara 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think he's talking about _ficus retusa_ which is a blunt ficus.

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Smaller leaves will come as your tree gets a greater density of branches and leaves. You can leaf prune a healthy tree and the new leaves will grow back in smaller, but as the tree regains it's strength, the leaf size will return to what it was. Leaf density and careful watering and fertilizing is the only long term permanent solution.

      I water the Tiger Bark Ficus at least once per day in the summer and sometimes 2 to 3 times, if the air is hot and dry. The pot it is in is small, so it does require careful inspection and watering so it doesn't totally dry out.

    These are Japanese bonsai scissors, right? The satsuki-scissors in this case if I'm not mistaken. You might want to use other scissors than those sharp ones for pruning the roots, too. There might be some dirt and sand on the roots that could end up between the scissors resulting in blunt scissors after some time. So I'd rather use some cheaper scissors or just different scissors only for the roots, and the good Japanese bonsai scissors for only the branches :)

    • @entyropy3262
      @entyropy3262 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do not rewatch to check, but he has various scissors and some of them are only for roots. Maybe you should watch some of his videos to get to know his level of insight better.

    • @lukasmihara
      @lukasmihara 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Excuse me? I pretty much watched every video in the last year or so and some older ones too. Maybe you should actually better rewatch the video.
      I'm talking about the satsuki-scissors which he uses for both the roots and and the branches. Either he has the exact same type of scissors twice, or he's using only one for everything (which, as I said, I wouldn't recommend).
      Satsuki-scissors aren't specifically made for root pruning anyways, but for smaller branches like those of azaleas for example.

    • @TheBonsaiZone

      Geraldo B. Neto, ouch! 😂😂😂

    • @entyropy3262
      @entyropy3262 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@peterbneto But you do know that the first Bonsais were also created without wires, and that wiring is only a modern technique that is not essentially defining Bonsais ? Bonsai means Tree in Pot, and as long as his plants look like trees, it's all fine. You could aswell say every non japanese Bonsai is just a plant in a pot and no Bonsai, because of lacking japanese techniques.
      Basically being intolerant like you demonstrate here is not leading anywhere.
      Nigel creates Bonsais that have a natural look. Personally I think that very artificial looking japanese Bonsais (artificial = heavily wired) do not look like trees, then they are barely trees in pots at all but more pieces of art. Originally Bonsais when developed in China were meant to demonstrate how natural trees do look alike, so there is nothing wrong with Nigels approach at all.
      I am myself almost never using any wire and I like it when u can make a tree look great without it. There are other techniques not only wires.

    Always the best demo + explanation of it all! May I ask what you do for water spots on leaves and chalky looking bark due to hard water? Water treatment or purifier? Wash the tree with light soap?

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I usually don't get them with the rain water, but I think the best way to get rid of them is a gentle wash with a toothbrush and water. You could add a very dilute amount of soap to the water, but be sure to check how the leaves react to the soap before doing the whole tree.

    Hello Nigel! You are a constant inspiration! I was wondering, for your 3D printed pots, would you ever consider posting the STL files someplace?

    Do you ever sell trees? I imagine it could be quite profitable if you have the space, with all the free cuttings you get from your own trees. Grow the cuttings for a couple of years and sell them as starter material or something?

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't sell trees just because I try and keep it more of a hobby than a full time business.

    Great video Nigel! You inspired me to start growing bonsai a few years ago so thank you for that! But I always had this dilemma: every time I prune my tropical trees I get several new buds growing in all sorts of angles, and I always wonder whether I should rub off the ones growing in bad directions so that tree doesn't waste energy on them, or if I should just leave them to grow until next pruning and let the tree recover? I would love to hear your opinion! Thank you

    Dear Nigel,
    Are your rooster-chickens okay? I'm asking on behalf of a concerned family member who thinks their crows sound a bit strained. To me they just sound like young roosters....making their first appearances in the Bonsai Zone. I'm also being pushed to ask for updates on Max, Dandelion, and your two friendly cats. Hope everyone is well...

      Right from young they never did get the hang of a good proper crow! Those are the Silkies that do that strange crowing. Max and Dandelion have integrated into the wilds of our back yard. I'll be sure to give an update on the cats and the birds soon!

      I do have a Tamarind tree growing that will eventually be a bonsai, but for now it's just a seedling.

    Nigel I love your videos and you are a constant inspiration. But don't we have enough plastic pollution chocking up our planet? Why do we have to 3D-print our pots and leave something behind that will take hundreds of years to decompose? Might be worth a thought...

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The clay pots don't do very well here in Canada with the very cold winters (-24 C) Plastic or Mica pots will last a lifetime here and you can design and make your own pots, any style and any size. I have lost so many clay pots to chipping and cracking from the cold and these pots are usually shipped from Asia, consuming a lot of resources in both manufacturing and shipping. I do hate using plastic, but once the pot is made it lasts a very long time. Pots are difficult to get here in Canada so 3D printing is a good option to get the pot you want. I do see many 3D printers making useless items that will get thrown out after the novelty has worn off. At least the 3D printed pots can be sold or given away to another person when I'm long gone! Thanks for your comment, it is an excellent one and a responsible one too!
