    The dialogue options you were afraid to pick actually make this interaction even more wholesome.
    If you tell Kim "I thought my rank was drunk", he says that you seem to have had a long and successful career, which makes him believe your current condition is temporary.
    If you ask Kim if he's putting up with you because you are equals or because you're his superior, he tells you that he's putting up with you because despite your unconventional tactics, you're doing good police work, and that matters more than your car.

    • @robv.8676
      @robv.8676 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +50

      Indeed, and when you then reply that "I'm afraid there are no ex-alcoholics." , Kim says "People have been through worse and gotten back on their feet, lieutenant double-yefreitor, - he says with a reassuring little smile.". Also, if you fail to whistle a tune, Kim will chuckle and whistle a tune himself. Most games seem to punish players when you fail an action, Disco Elysium is very forgiving and like Kim, won't let you down. It let's you attempt actions without throwing you under the bus when you make a mistake.

      To add to this chain: There are many moments where it's better to attempt the check and fail, as it opens up whole new and interesting paths of dialogue. I am a perfectionist player, and was so annoyed to discover that some of my favourite scenes were "hidden" behind failures, and I completely missed them because I only attempted checks when I had a high success percentage. Some (no-spoiler) examples: The frog hat visor, the interaction with Speedfreaks FM, Communist quest slap. This game REALLY rewards trying and failing.

    • @CurlyHooligan
      @CurlyHooligan 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      @@emmachance8Same, I save-scummed my first play through. But learning to embrace failure and adapt it into your story of you is such a fundamental part of this game and it's so fitting to accept your shortfalls.

      @robv.8676 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @emmachance8 indeed. Failures open new routes, including new paths branching of further successes or failure routes. A game that rewards failure really is a rare gem. Being a perfectionist myself, I had some really rewarding failures in my second playthrough.
      Such as when I failed a check and was told "find the children of the big sea" and my Harry went? "Big sea? Big C! That can only mean one thing! COMMUNISM!". And then Harry decided he should do more communist stuff... It was a gloriously funny moment. Iove this game.

    It's not the first good thing we learned about Harry, there was the part when we examined the police spreadsheet and discovered that Harry had solved like 270 cases in relatively short time and only killed three people in line of duty, which was put into contex as low by Kim. This indicated to us that Harry was probably hard working police officer and was not triggerhappy or bloodthirsty. Definitelly something you could be proud of in a place like Jamrock.

    This is really the beauty of Disco Elysium. The game is crafted in such a way that it consistently gives back what you put in. Even if two players experience all the same scenes, their own personal connection to said scenes is going to be different and a large part of that is driven by well written prose and game mechanics that reward players with more writing in the styles that they prove investment in. It's the kind of narrative that can only be done as a video game, which makes it one of the best narratives in video games.
    I'm curious if the tie connects to any sort of actual psychological condition--obviously, its outbursts and suggestions are just the imagination of the protagonist. Is it a method of distancing himself from those self-destructive and indulgent thoughts? Personifying them as literally intrusive as coming from a tie rather than from himself? It's curious.

    • @eurobrady
      @eurobrady  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +30

      Perhaps I can talk about this in an upcoming episode, but yes what you're talking about is a thing. Not a condition per se, but something we do naturally to cope with uncomfortable things, and can be very effective when consciously applied. It's called cognitive defusion, essentially displacing anxious ideas or feelings either through personification, finding absurdity in them, or creating distance from one's internal identification with the thoughts. I find the tie annoying but it does have a psychological purpose for sure!

    • @TomSketchit
      @TomSketchit 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +20

      @@eurobrady There was one scene I got with the tie in my playthrough that you won't be getting that sticks out to me. One of the ways to get into the shipping container yard, alternative to the way you did it, is to jump from a roof onto a walkway with a Savoir Faire check. I screwed this up like three times (needing to strip off my pants and shoes in order to have a chance since they both messed with the stat). And as I messed up the third time, my tie suddenly began squeezing around my neck while trying to comfort me. At first Harry reacted as if it was strangling him, but after a moment of accepting it he found the pressure comforting and recovered a bit of mental health I think.
      I don't know if there was a point to bringing this up other than to share an interesting moment in which the tie acted in a way other than the usual loud yelling. There is also a nice moment you can get with the tie towards the end of the game, assuming you do something very specific that I won't spoil.

    Just for reference, the game told you earlier that Harry makes about $5,000/year. So, if Harry somehow is able to live off 50% of his wage, and pay the other half to the RCM, he will pay off his debt in 16 years. He’s already been working for the RCM for 18 years. Everything he’s been doing for the past 2 decades? All the stress, all the pain, all the injuries? He has to do that again just to break even, and then who knows if he’ll have anything left to retire on?

    In my opinion, the "superstar cop" persona is more than just a compensatory behavior. Harry took on an insane case load and declined promotions which would get him out of field work because he wanted to keep doing a good job. He became addicted to speed to keep up that level of work for almost 2 decades. In many ways, he IS Johnny Supercop. Or at least he was before he pushed himself so hard he broke. He becomes Sorry Cop once he's off of his drugs. But that doesn't feel good, and he wants to be Supercop again.

  • @Nonam1400

    The Calvin and Hobbes analogy is actually so good
    Other miscellaneous thoughts on the episode:
    - Kind of related to the "sorry cop vs supercop" dichotomy, this game tends to give the most emotionally rewarding moments when you play Harry authentically, and the funniest writing when you select all the "crazy asshole" dialogue options. Of course, you get both either way, no matter how you play it. I support however you decide to roleplay!
    - The car in the ice thing is also one of my favorite scenes. I actually have some really nice art of it hanging up on my wall which depicts Harry with bent wings, colored like stained glass, and Kim with falcon wings. The name of the art is "birds on a wire" by stillindigo, for anyone interested in seeing it.
    - The fact you completed the "Motorway South" thought right after finding the car was great. It made me realize that Harry's drunken drive across the canal could be seen as like, a symbolic reenactment of it.
    - Regarding the necktie, I also didn't find what it had to say very funny or meaningful compared to the rest of the game, and I personally wouldn't be upset if you end up ditching it at some point. That's not to say I didn't like it for what it was - I understand its function, and it does have its own part to play in the ongoing narrative.

    45:05 I love your insights and comments on Empathy bc it pairs so well with and expands upon the in-game description when you click on "Info" with the skill selected:
    "Cool for: Judges of Character, Interviewers, Interrogators
    Empathy breaks into the souls of others and forces you to feel what’s inside. It enables you to notice social cues others may miss: perhaps a hidden sadness you could coax out a little more, a strange joy from someone who should be bereaved, or a hidden resentment that could return to harm you later.
    At high levels, Empathy really puts you in other people’s shoes. You’ll cry for their sorrows, punch walls to relieve their angers, and be an even more unstable cop. With low Empathy, however, you’ll be an ungainly beast unable to talk to anyone without upsetting them."

    Re: your explanation of empathy: "understanding" something is a higher level intellectual thought, as is the willingness to understand, in my opinion. I consider myself an empathetic person and it can feel involuntary at times. Empathy is blunted by intellect, like to put it in game terms my empathy chimes in first, but may be cut off or followed up by logic or conceptualization which changes how I react to the immediate empathy instinct. It is indeed a very tricky thing. This is an extremely reductive way to phrase it but this is just a TH-cam comment. Maybe my empathy stat is too high. It would be a fun exercise to have people, in good faith, fill out their own "character sheets" using this game's stat system, on like a scale of 0-10 with no point limits. It seems like such a useful tool for understanding the different facets of decision and personality. Hell you could even ask someone to fill out what THEY think your 'stats' are and compare/contrast. It's very fascinating. It seems silly, but really in any other game with stat systems, the entire 24 skill sheet would be reduced to INT, CHR, STR, DEX, with Charisma essentially just being "trade prices and chance to lie successfully" What about Inland Empire? What about Empathy? What about.. etc etc., which is why this game calls it 'Psyche', a much better term IMO. The granularity of the second stat screen is so wonderful to see. This is easily the best playthrough of Disco Elysium I've come across, or at least my favorite. Thanks Brady!

    This game made me cry a few times, being so confrontational. This scene but also later in the game, Harry gets confronted withpainful facts about himself and society. He's far from the only person in Ravachol who got the short end of the stick. People who fell down and can't easily get back up, apparantly lacking a proper social safety net. The society of Ravachol is broken, Harry is broken. Harry was a heavy duty case solving machine, but something broke him.
    He found his escape hin alcohol, still trying to be a case slvnig machine, but this broken man has relapsed and quite badly so. Hurting himself, his colleagues. Harry got f* -edd. And there is Kim, who sees that Harry wasand still has these amazing case solving skills even though Harry takes a whole other approach that he himself would. But he is comfortable with letting Harry do his thing, though he will pull Harry back when Kim thinks Harry is going too far, too unstabile, too close to toppeling over the edge. He won't push push Harry but he will gently nudge , offfering a rope for Harry to pull himself back. If Harry is willing,Kim can helpthem and together they can make a very good team.
    Thanks again for this awesome playthrough Brady!

    Yours is one of the few de playthroughs, that i actually enjoy watching. And even though you aggressively refuse to interact with certain parts of the game, your genuine investment in the things you are interacting with makes it very enjoyable and interesting. Good work, tangents and all. Stay true to yourself.
    Also badge is new, photo is old.

    Calvin and Hobbes yes! But also, Isn't Hobbes' personality a part of Calvin's imagination? So Calvin outsourcing his logical side to Hobbes? Very interested in your analysis of Calvin. If he wasn't a kid, wouldn't he be classified as schizophrenic? Is there such a thing as schizophrenic kid?

    unfortunately I'm late, but I do want to comment on something you've said before and is especially highlighted here: despite going in and immediately being presented with this idea that Harry is a horrible cop, the game continues to show that Harry is actually a very "good" cop. MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD: If you find your police papers (not sure if you've done this or not), you can learn that Harry's kill count is 3 in 18 (I think 18?) years of work. Kim will comment this is actually good compared to other cops, including himself in which Kim has 6 kills. You can also question the amount of cases you appear to regularly take on in a certain amount of time, and Kim will say that it's a bit insane to take on that amount of work (or something along those lines). And of course, the title you learn in this ep that Harry has denied promotion twice. in short, Harry actually seems to have been attempting really hard to be a "good" cop, which makes sense considering his motivation for becoming a cop (won't mention because possible bigger spoiler). it's quite interesting how his precinct makes fun of him while he has a good record. (although it is important to mention that you can learn about a case where Harry beats up a suspect I think, so he certainly has a case of police brutality. but this does not seem like the reason his precinct laughs at him).

    14:17 - I believe it's your perception that would also apply more than your visual calculus. That's not looking too good either lol (and I remember earlier on you were envisioning Harry as being perceptive, astute but not very intellectual lol)
    Also this "Holy shit" moment of a scene is invoking a vibe from a song in the Super Paper Mario soundtrack - Memory (1-4). I feel that Harry's loss and depression, perhaps even the atmosphere of the game when it's describing the human experience.
    I hope this game gives you more "holy shit" moments that we can all learn from. The pure emotion that this game evokes is so masterfully well-done that I am so glad this game even exists at all, and why I love it.

  • @JayTohab
    @JayTohab 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    This is my favorite moment in the game, because it further plays with the concept of identity. _Planescape Torment_ tries to challenge identity with "what can change the nature of a man" (using- minor spoilers- a cyclical process of amnesia to explore different sides of the player's character), but here it's suggested identity is even more complex. We are not our appearances, not our actions, not even our impulses or motivations. The skills only represent your brain/mind, informing the true essence of you- what may be considered the soul- what their reactions and observations are. They hold significant sway, but the soul remains the agent.
    This moment really digs into it, because early on you can say something like "I don't want to be Harry, I want to be someone else", which if said will come up again here. This is the part where the game lets you know that your identity is not what others see- everything from your actual name to your actual career is much deeper. The game can basically ask, "so, who do you actually want to be? Are you willing to give this persona another chance?"

  • @tomaO2
    @tomaO2 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

    Skills can go to negative numbers, and you can soft lock yourself from progressing when certain skills do so. Perception is the worst, as a low enough number can stop you from seeing doors, and I know people that are unable to advance in questlines because logic was too low. It's actually a serious matter. Don't just assume that it's not going to make a difference since Logic is already at 0. I remember one quest, in particular, that you are completely locked out of completing without logic. I remember one playthrough and the guy kept trying to complete the quest, but nothing worked, and it was because of logic. You haven't started on that quest yet, by the way.
