      I feel the character he plays rn (psychological) is not exactly the person he is role playing because he has empathy, espirit de corps, Volition, etc that enable mc to feel who he can trust. The physical archetype on the other hand, has all the trust issues, electrochemistry without volition to reign it in.

    The more I think about it, it’s brilliant that there’s such a complex fictional economic situation that the game all but forces you to participate in. As I was playing, I got hella panicked, thinking “oh my god I don’t understand ANY of this shit, and everyone else does, and it’s super important to everyone”. You know…like an amnesiac would.

    I call displacement "Biting the Irish setter." Years ago, I had a fluffy little dog who would never bite a person. My roommate once picked her up at the vet to find her wearing an e-collar and he laughed at how she looked. She glared at him, then bit the goofy Irish setter standing next to her, who had done nothing.

    The comment at 24:00 ish is great, the combination of the game's writing, your characterisation and a bit of luck makes it so immersive. I just wanted to say, as seems evident from some of the comments you've made about why you're having your character act the way you are/why you're roleplay in some ways (especially with regards to Kim), I get the feeling you've received a bit of...maybe "pushback" isn't the right word, but surprise? about it from some viewers.
    I just want to say, that while I personally loved Kim from pretty early on, I 100% get where you're coming from- but more importantly, I'm genuinely enjoying the fact that you're making different choices than I did in my playthrough. I've watched maybe a half-dozen playthroughs of this game, and this might the most interesting ones! Definitely the most educational.
    So, yeah, I hope you don't worry too much about the fact that you're taking a different path than most people- that's a GOOD thing; it means its a new and fresh experience for us viewers. Can't wait to see the next episode!

      @kinzey2 one of the things that's so great about the game is the degree of flexibility it gives you in *how* you roleplay the main protagonist.

    • @birdup1_2

      I guess part of it is how he’s being a dick to Kim because he’s expecting Kim to make their professional relationship easier on him, whereas he’s not putting the effort in himself. It *is* his case, Kim isn’t just forcing it on him.

    • @bulletsandbracelets4140
      @bulletsandbracelets4140 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +29

      @@birdup1_2 that's the thing though - he's not playing a reasonable character! so his character's choices aren't the logical decisions you or I would follow, he's distrustful of Kim because he has baggage of his own he's working though. I really love how much he's rp'ing and how much insight he's giving the character from a psychological perspective. It's really similar to how I go into writing and a really fun way to engage with a character.

    • @sameerdodger
      @sameerdodger 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      @@birdup1_2 But the MC is a dick? Brady is roleplaying how he thinks the MC would act based on the context the game has given him. If you woke up with amnesia like that I don't think you be open in arms to a guy that's just told you that you're a cop investigating a hanging? You don't even remember your name. Kim doesn't exactly have a 'warm' persona either, he's incredibly shut-off and only focuses on the job. Idk I think some of you folks are forgetting that you're playing this in the context of a video game. The game even gestures that Kim is important as the camera pans over from him when you first go downstairs. You wouldn't get any of that pretext irl. I think a lot of you have also finished the game too so you have that context which ofc Brady doesn't have, and even if he did he would play this ignoring that since he's trying to 'RP' the MC in order to psychoanalyse him.

  • @MrMarlowe3488
    @MrMarlowe3488 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +37

    One of the great things about this game which you touched on is there's really no "min/maxing" unless you're seriously on your 10th playthrough and you want to engineer some specific set of circumstances like youre bill murray in groundhog day. Generally (with a few specific storyline white checks being the exception, and usually there's at least 2 options even there) whatever stat you put a point to, whatever thought you decide to internalize will just be "fine" and your main concern should just be roleplaying and figuring out what you think sounds neat. The thoughts are specifically vague about what they do once you internalize them on purpose and half the time it's not even the fact that they give you stat boosts, it's the fact that they unlock other dialogue trees you wouldn't even know about from reading the description. The stats themselves are essentially just a matter of "which voices in my head do I want talking to me more regularly"?

    • @Katwind
      @Katwind 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Which is why I recommend to experience the game with a lot of points in either Inland Empire, Shivers or Esprit de Corps. The rest of the skills enhance a viewpoint for Raphaël, how he thinks. But those three show conections, how he experiences the world.
      Also, Esprit de Corps helps you understand Kim better and how much he has your back.

    It's kind of interesting learning about displacement in that way because I've always thought of it as "kicking the dog". Half-Light reminds me of that because if someone or something is stronger than your character or they hold some kind of power, Half-Light tends to act more cowardly and defensively. Meanwhile if it's an easier target (like a kid or a lady in a wheel chair) Half-Light will show (or feign) aggressiveness towards that person or thing because it knows it's a safer target to vent the frustration at.

  • @davidjacobson6791

    1:00:57 I agree with you completely! I used to box and some guys had aggression issues, but they came to boxing to exercise it get better. There was no malice when we sparred, and all the malice went into the punching bag, the weight lifting and the running.
    But some guys were angry and were just displacing all their life’s anger onto their opponent. Like they were just there to hurt people as badly as they could. Those people usually either learn how to reign that in pretty quick and make it useful, or they let it run wild and get kicked out/loose interest.

    This is genuinely one of the most interesting play styles I've seen of this game. It really makes me appreciate the game more with how it's able to keep up with you. As much as I love Kim, I am now very invested in how your character interacts with him and everyone else. I've yet to start my second playthrough, but you've inspired me to want to push my own boundaries instead of settling for the "good" or "correct" option, bravo! About all the things you mentioned at 53:45 like redirecting emotions to safer targets, and it gave me an insight: i work with customer services in brazil and i end up the day sometimes with a lot of stress and anger that i end up redirecting not to someone else, but to myself in a lot of destructive ways. I never managed well the anger feeling, and i end up transforming it into deep sadness and depression. I think i have a lot of points spent in "Composure", as it says in it's description: "Composure makes you tuck your gut in and maintain a stern expression. Even lying in bed late night when no one else can see you, you’ll have to keep it up. You’ll never be able to stop" - i clearly related to that, and i use sublimation (as explained in 55:25) with weights. Gosh, things get blues pretty fast when i don't lift weights on a daily routine. Great game. Great channel. Thanks for the insights and laughs.

There are zero emotional implications, and the story doesn't progress differently whether you know this to be true or not. I live in France and here it is deeply associated with psychoanalysis (because we are still obsessed with Freud for some reason ...) and i am quite curious if this concept is used in other countries with more modern and empirically validated approaches !

    Enjoying this POV of the game. I went with an empathetic brute (high physique at 6 and psyche at 4). And the types of social interactions are quite different. Much more focus on power dynamics and how to improve/worsen them with drugs or force. Yours seems to be more spread on types of social intelligence, with only a hint of physical actions.
    Edit: Another side effect is my game seems to focus on how the different political factions are forcing me to do things (or the other way around on good rolls), rather than convincing me or out-maneuvering me intellectually.

    Very interesting what thoughts you come to on the Thought Cabinet mechanic, because for me it was very conceptually interesting.

    So i just want to point two little things:
    It's okay not to say everything. The devs planned for people who exhaust every single dialogue option, and WILL use it against you if it makes sense. So role-playing "what will my character do" is acceptable and might even be optimal in some cases.
    But also: just because a dialogue three is greyed out doesn't mean there's nothing else worth saying. The game isn't multiple choice, pick one, choose your own adventure. Feel free to go back to a submenu and keep digging into the other options until you're satisfied about all the things you want to say or ask.
    A lot of streamers I've watched get stuck because they pick one choice and never think of going back to pick another one (like actually asking something you need to solve the case).

    • @eurobrady
      @eurobrady  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      This is good to know! I really appreciate that there don't seem to be many soft locks in this game in terms of choices. I'm finding that every role playing decision I make is resulting in a very realistic outcome, yet it never feels like I don't have other options to do what I need to.

      Also, get your suggestion high for smoker on the balcony.
      Wish you can also get perception at 5 for the drug trafficking car, but it doesn't seem plausible, you could get that though if you get the cap from Siileng by failing check and internalize cryptozoologist thought which gives you +3 perception.
      Also, start looking at the map more, you missed money and bag for bottles.
      I could be more specific, but i don't want to spoil too much for you, generally do side quests and wander around before doing main quests.

    What you said about Authority and Garte redirecting his anger towards you is interesting. But also keep in mind, your Skills are very opinionated. They sometimes see the truth, but other times they see what they want to see. The higher the Skill, the more they think they are right during passive checks. Sometimes a check is Legendary not because it was hard to achieve, but because it was such a reach that only someone who is such an Authoritarian would think in such a way
    It is possible that Garte is mad at you because you deserve it, but Authority thinks that's unfair and clearly must have a different reason and is taking it out on you.
    That's the coolest part of this game: you can't always trust your Skills x)

    "It's much more natural for someone who's traumatized to actually push that person away..."
    This is something that came up with a character I RP as! More specifically, she suffered severe trauma as a child (and ended up running away from home and basically starting her life over), and a part of how that was reflected in her behavior was that she felt an immediate distrust and fear toward people who showed her unconditional love. Of course, as a fictional character in an action-oriented story, she started interrogating that reaction much faster than the average person would.
    (It didn't help that she'd developed a coping mechanism of treating relationships as transactional--which was itself a reaction to her 'unconditional' relationships turning out to be harmful.)

    • @eurobrady
      @eurobrady  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Love this parallel! You nailed it with relationships becoming seen as transactional, I find my detective always considering whether or not Kim's empathy or small forms of recognition are simply because we are useful to him. My comment on the other video about Volition over-correcting feels foolish now that I've gotten further into the game, because I'm doing a high Psyche playthrough as well and I'm starting to feel like the "might go crazy" warning was about the player and not the character! I don’t think asking Lena about her disability is the character “pushing her buttons to test her limits” he just literally doesn’t know what some concepts are. If the mundane obvious explanation can explain something in totality, a deeper more profound one isn’t always necessary and may even result in coming to incorrect, fabricated conclusions

    Hello! I'm here because ofc i can't comment on the log of the stream lol, but i'm seeing how you explain how you "push" people to the psycholocial work zone. I just wanted to talk about myself for a while lol, i think my last therapist tried to do that, but she kept on going to the point that every time, without fail, I had to go on walks to try and cry it out to calm down before I got home/ to work. So i guess it's VERY hard to get to that work zone without, yk, making the situation worse lol. I stopped going after a while.

    • @eurobrady
      @eurobrady  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Yeah, it is very hard indeed. Sometimes it is a very narrow zone and it's certainly possible to push too far past it. That's why it's important to check in frequently and make sure that we are either escalating the intensity less or trying a different approach. My way of explaining it is only one of many ways to practice, and it's not always the best one, especially if the subject is very sensitive or there isn't a lot of trust established with the client yet. I would not do this too early on in sessions for example.

    Just an important thing, consider most of your actions on the game thoughtfully. For example, really consider if you want to take drugs as your character, even the most basic things can bring consequences further down the game.
    Also you dont need to do every dialogue option, sometimes you can say something that you didnt meant to say and change your relationship with the character you are talking to. But also, you can miss an important thing. Play the game with the mentality of saying things that you meant to say or ask

    58:07 ok, this is a problem for me. when the issue is capitalistic forces and your response is, you cant punch capitalism in the face instead BE PRODUCTIVE and exercise. i hear, make yourself more fit for the capitalist to make a work horse of you. this pull to being productive gives me a reflexive revulsion. im no therapist, but when disorders are defined in your field of work it seems to be centered on the effect a problem has on a persons capacity to do work. its a pay walled "get help" feature that im not sure is meant to help the individual, but the businesses that want to exploit them. so here i am after a mental breakdown and instead of going after the root of the problem, we're talking about distractions and misdirection, as if the goal is make me docile.

    • @voa148
      @voa148 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      I don't think it's good to let capitalism control your life and perspective that much. To always frame advice and council as some attempt to "optimize" you or turn you into a model worker sounds to me as its own type of redirected emotion. Being "productive" no doubt is often framed in a capitalist manner, but must it be so? Working on a hobby, going out with friends, learning about something tangential to your work - I'd classify all of these as productive, but do they make you some sort of model desired worker? I don't think so.
      It's fine, even good, to spot these relationships between our theory of medicine and the overarching economic system - no doubt these feed into each other. But again, I can't help but feel like you're just allowing capitalism to take complete control of your life by taking its framing as a given. To do something you find worthwhile with your time, to exercise, these are actionable pieces of advice - that can and will improve your quality of life, they aren't tricks meant to distract you from what "really ails you". "Fighting the system" itself can be cut up into actionable component pieces, such as networking with like-minded people, reading up on the history of the particular tradition you follow, etc...

    • @bulletsandbracelets4140
      @bulletsandbracelets4140 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Definitely what the other person said, but also - being productive means showing up for yourself. Feeling good in your own body, looking after your own health and well being, not allowing life to make you forget that you owe some things to yourself too! Maybe it's exercising, maybe it's just going for a walk. Maybe it's spending some time cooking a good meal. Maybe it's going out to eat. Maybe it's playing a video game, or creating art, or journaling, or writing in general.
      Therapists are there to help you discover the root of problems you face and to help you find ways to make your life work better for you. They aren't just there to diagnose. They want to find the root of your problem, but they can't just get there. They need to talk you to the point where you recognize it yourself. And part of resolving that is understanding why the realtionships in your life are unhealthy - misdirection - and how you can work to make those relationships healthier so you have a better quality of life.
      It's all a process. Not everything in the world is set out to use you - and even the things that are, try to use them to your benefit in return. Lifting each other up doesn't need to be a negative thing
