Bournemouth were written off as relegation contenders by the start of the Premier League season, accelerated even further with the sacking of Scott Parker in August.
However, Gary O’Neil has managed to achieve the impossible by keeping the Cherries up - with massive wins along the way against Liverpool and Tottenham.
Ahmed Shooble explains just how AFC Bournemouth managed to turn around their season and prove their doubters wrong.

Bruh, the season is almost done
I remember O'Neill being a great player at Portsmouth - breaking into the team as a teenager when we won the first Division. He also captained the England U21s and Pompey at times in the Premier League so he's had good leadership credentials for a long time.

A bloke named Gary playing with two flat banks of four is one of the managers of the season in 2023.
Nature is healing.
Great job breaking it down Ahmed 👍 Have really enjoyed your work this season.
Please please please please keep the podcast.
I’ve been working all this time listening your banter and I’m not sure I can vibe without it anymore.
I'm sure you will manage to vibe with or without Joe Devine in your ears
Billing is a gem for us. Totally unorthodox amc/number 10. Has knack of timing runs around edge of area to perfection and scoring belters from no where in tight games.
Not with his detractors though at afcb, although vast majority see value/quality he brings. Can go from being match winner one game, to looking like he just rolled out of bed the next game, strolling around, misplacing basic passes etc.
Overall hes highly thought of now by most fans, but that wasnt necessarily the case for the 1st couple of years.
Agree, Billings and Solanke have punch in front of goal - helps Bournemouth loads.
O'Neil made a fantastic first season as a coach. He looks very promising.
I remember him being a great player at Portsmouth - breaking into the team as a teenager when we won the first Division. He also captained the England U21s and Pompey at times in the Premier League so he's had good leadership credentials for a long time.
Then got sacked. He got the wolves job though
I love that it seems like every week or two, there's another kind of graphic that illustrates a player or team's tendencies over the course of the season. I loved that percentage overlay of the Bournemouth shot map to get a good idea of their locational tendencies for their shots.
Also, great job describing and presenting, Ahmed!
Interesting video (a worried Wolves fan)
Any other wolves fans here coming to see how fucked we are?
Edit: Never mind he's goated
Yup. But I can see how his tactics work with our players.. Billing is essentially cunha. And we do have attacking wing backs in doc and ait nori.
@@A_Very_Sporty_Guy AYE MATE GET INNNNNN LMAO
He's alright mate
So Parker was right, they needed new players
True, but it's about how you deliver the message and being in check with your emotions
And new manager 😂
@@TimChew10 nah the board was the issue
Parker wasn’t wrong about needing players BUT he wasn’t at all smart with his recruitment in the previous January window. Bournemouth signed a lot of players and apparently almost none of them were premier league quality. So, Parker was very shortsighted.
Great to see Tifo inject a bit of speed with their new presenters.
More Ahmed. I like his delivery.
He's nice with it.
really? i thought he was too slow and slightly hesitant at times. That confidence might come with more practice but honestly I like carl and the others more.
@@anmol3457 yeah did notice it sometimes felt a bit like he was reading off an autocue but the relaxed calm way he explains things is pretty nice
Brilliant video!!! Hope to see more from Bournemouth next season now, another mid table finish would be amazing!
Love to see that famous pink sweater again Ahmed, hope to see you back on the Bournemouth beat full time next season
Nice to see some Cherries content 🍒
And, specifically, positive content.
Enjoyed this video. Very clear and informative.
Great analysis from a great journalist!
cheers Ahmed - nice video. was shame to see you move over to reporting on fulham
be great to see you back on Bournemouth next season again!
Awesome to see you over on here talking about the Cherries, but I wish you hadn’t been shuffled over to the Fulham beat, Ahmed!
The Athletic clearly didn’t expect Bournemouth to stay up either, based on the coverage stopping almost entirely 😅
With Scott Parker, I think we would’ve been relegated by the beginning of april.
I’ll admit, I didn’t think Gary O’Neil was the answer to us staying up, and I still think we need a new manager as our tactics sometimes can be just awful, we need an already established manager.
We also need to spend some money in the transfer window, we need a new fall back, 2 or 3 new midfielders, and also a new striker, simply to bolster our squad depth.
Liked this, looking forward to seeing Ahmed again.
Very nice work Ahmed
Does that mean Dominic Solanke is Harry Kane 2.0? A striker who changes from a goal getter to a provider. Tho as explained in this vid, the way he creates is different from how Harry Kane creates.
*Daniel Levy watching this and taking an important note
Agreed man - not the most clinical finisher but has been so great with link up play. It’s been so good to see him start to thrive.
oh finally, that was my big takeaway.
I'm not the most football-aware, so forgive me if this is stupid, but is this kinda what happened with Griezmann in the French national team?
Billing reminds me of fellaini a bit… maybe a bit more “flairy” and fluid. However a similar player in terms of overall usefulness 🧐
I think unlocking billing in an even more advanced role saved the season as well as additional investment in the winter
Crystal Palace, Wolves and maybe West Ham also sprinted out of the relegation battle. Oh, and Chelsea.
Nice breakdown. Very easy to follow, even for a plum like me.
This video is a great lesson on what to do with your arms when presenting.

Manager of the year for me!
Idk what the hosts name is but I like him, I hope tifo releases more videos w him :)
Now I'm extra nervous about tomorrow. These guys are gonna cost us top 4 😩
Keep the podcast and make it twice a week 😂, i think everyone lives for the euro/world cup daily coverage here.
bournemouth in my opinion are not always the best team to play possesion especially against quality teams, but they are very good at utilising mistakes & turn them to counters, and then also crosses and pressing. gary has defined the definiton of making the best of what you have. for a team like this where everyone predicted you to go down, performance, possession and style of play are not the most important thing, results are what the club needed the most and points are crucial in a religation battle. bournemouth have always been backed by my weekly match predictions, and my most impressive guess is when i saw them winning 3-2 away at tottenham
DONT TAKE THE PODCAST AWAY FROM ME PLEASE, I LOVE YOU JOE DEVINE. (woof woof)
Bournemouth would have been much higher up the table if it wasnt for some shocking var decsions. They have only had one positive var decsion all season (offside against southhampton) and they are the only team in the prem not to get a penalty all season, despite several clear cut pens ignored by officials. They are probably playing about 10 points higher than where they are if there was either a non biased var system or no var at all.
But then Bournemouth are also 19th in the expected points table, so I don't think you can argue that this has been a season of bad luck.
west ham have had the most var decisions against them in the league
Despite having done a miracle job keeping Bournemouth in the Premier League, they still decided to sack him. This is mistreatment and I now hope them to get relegated.
good analysis
4-4-2/ 4-4-1-1 in England is what 3/5 at the back is to Italian football. Some systems just suit certain league styles no matter how out dated they may seem just my opinion
fascinating thing is scott parker just gave up 🤷♂ too early in the season
Bournemouth are MASSIVE
In a tiny stadium
He joined after his side lost 9-0 and rebuilt their confidence from rock bottom
Do you think you’ve neglected talking about Tavernier who has been one of their best players this season
Great video, but please keep the podcast !!
They are reliably bottom 3 in most expected points models.
Ten Hag : Nice.
Good video, no one talks about the chez
If we can get a new right back, a centre midfield replacement for Lerma, and bring in Nicolas Jackson from Villarael up front then I’m excited for next season. 🍒 Up the bloody cherries!!!!
How about how Palace escaped relegation? 🙏😃
Man Scott Parker doesn't look so good now...
Except me, Bournemouth always played at a very high pace, suited to the league.
Great work bro, As a United fan you open my eyes.
Lots of grit. And even more luck.
Parker is a Championship manager, not suited for the PL
If Leicester can win the league, nothing is impossible
Never liked Parker when he was appointed in the Championship. Poor tactics, boring predictable football, never took any responsibility and never engaged with supporters. Gary was a saviour, however, we need change of we are to survive in the prem.
Summed up: a lot of luck and a lot of reliance on Everton, Leeds and Leicester being absolutely RUBBISH.
That's a fair point too: Everton without C-L and Leicester losing Vardy's pace/goals definitely contributed. That said Bournemouth were in the "soup" for most of the season and pulled out some great results in the last 15 games to go or so. That's excellent work by the manager.
Our squad really wasn’t bad, almost all of our were signed in our prem era or this season.
Gary O'Neil has been a fantastic job. As a Pompey fan I thought he was a legend at Fratton Park. So good to see him doing well in the Premier League at Bournemouth.
Plus I think Scott Parker should never manage in the Premier League again.
Well now he got kicked
Have a soft spot for O'Neill because of the 2014 play off final. Parker looks a right mug now😂😂
So Parker was right all along? 😂
The team wasn't good enough for EPL standard
They had to sign players
So they're going to beat man utds high line? 😅
Up the cherries
PLEEEEEEEEASE get a sprit level and straighten the pictures, its killing me. Love you, say it back.
Can someone please align and straighten the jerseys in the background?!
Could you please make the pictures straight on the wall? It's so frustrating and takes my attention away from the presentation-many thanks.
There will be very few Bournemouth fans that agree with you. O’Neil lacks a lot of experience and afcb is not a training school for managers
