City always used to be the big brain team that slowly breaks the opponent with a technical game plan with high possession, but all these years they never had that liver pool like counterattacking threat, but during yesterday against Bayern, city was okay giving the ball to Bayern and tried to counter attack every single time bayern took thier chances, i guess city finally locked down their only issue with a monster in the front, and it's gonna be a miracle to break city anytime soon on.

I think City might have a tougher time against Madrid this year. Modric, Kroos, Camavinga and Valverde are probably the most press resistant midfield in football right now. Everyone for the entire season had talked and talked saying city look so weak this year, they can’t possibly win anything, they don’t have good enough players, pep is overrated, etc. but then city have gone on a great run crushing Leipzig in the champions league and other teams in the prem and now everyone has switched to it being “obvious” that man city is winning cause they’re just so much better. Recognize that Pep has made changes and those changes have worked WELL. This style of pressing is very hard for teams to get by as man city now have four really quality center backs and their double pivot players are very confident defensively and in winning the ball to then distribute to their wingers who are some of the best in ball retention.

I feel like Guardiola's been trying to implement this 3-1-2-4 for a while but this is the first time it's succeeded,
while I can't remember precisely what game, I know he tried Zabaleta in that DM "Stones" role a couple of times throughout 2016-17. and went for a similar shape in Barcelona's 2-2 draw (3-2 aggregate defeat) with Chelsea in 2012, with Puyol, Pique, Mascherano behind Busquets, Xavi and Iniesta.

Given that pressing seems to require coordination and gusto, it seems something very coachable even to lesser technically gifted players. I know there are exceptions like Leeds and Soton under Hasenhuttel but I wonder what the overall stats say in regards to league position and pressing intensity and ppda stats. I wonder if in 5 years time it'll be more evenly distributed between the top and bottom sides.

If a limited team presses hard, they might win the ball more often high up the pitch, but the situation is less "dangerous" than with better players. They're also more likely to give the ball away in the counter-attack allowing the opposition to immediately spring their own attack whilst players are focused on charging forward

it’s more advantageous to press aggressively against poorer technical teams because they are less likely to have ‘press-resistant’ players; if nottingham forest tried to press city aggressively then they are likely to just get played through and beaten on the transition because of city’s higher level of quality. it also takes a great deal of mental courage and confidence, which is quite difficult to maintain in a struggling team.

Before, Pep made it a sport to come up with new tactictal decisions to try and counter specific opponents, making KDB a False 9 or playing without a DM and such. Haaland being in the team forces Pep to keep it simple to get the most out of his striker, its almost as simple as 'get the ball to Erling and we win', and thats why City will probably win the CL this year, and maybe the treble as well.

Let's be honest, Bayern broke through their press pretty easy at times, that chance that samne had in the 1st half if vinicius or especially rodrygo had that chance it's going in, and at 1-0 in the 1st half, who knew what would have happened. It's all great putting in all these tactical pressing and all these things, but Madrid don't depend on tactics, and they don't care, all they do is pretty simple you get the ball from city put in a long ball to vinicius or rodrygo and they will do what needs to be done to win the game, it's pretty simple.

Not saying that Madrid is neccesarily gonna win it but they are gonna trouble City with their pressing. As good as their pressing is, a fully functional Liverpool last season had a greater pressing than City, perhaps one of the greatest pressing side ever. But the way Modric-Kroos played through that press is ridiculous. Benzi and Vini might be more troublesome than any attack City has faced in last 2-3 months but Modric-Kroos need to be on their absolute best game for them to have any realistic chance.
I still remember a certain play from last year's final, Liverpool was pressing high and so so well, for a moment it looked like Madrid is cornered where Carvajal had the ball a bit higher up the pitch, had a player pressing him and alongside was Modric who was covered by 3 players from 3 different directions who were also cutting the passing lanes, but as soon as Modric received that pass, he faked a pass in one direction, turned one player in the wrong direction, did the same to the second player and then passed back to Militao who was now free of any pressure because what Modric did, it was very small detail but highly effective and I was amazed, I understood why Modric is rated as highly as he is, these players see things normies like us just don't, which is why players like Modric, Xavi, Busi, Kroos, Pirlo etc aren't as appreciated by general public as much as forwards or attacking midfielders like Zidane, Iniesta, Ozil, Kdb etc
I'm also amazed at people who think this is gonna be a one sided tie, even after last year, even after last decade, knowing how Madrid is a whole different team in the UCL and their form in league or cup competitions doesn't matter. If Modric-Kroos have a good day, they're still gonna trouble City a lot and would absolutely be the key to the tie for Madrid

I love your videos but as a City fan I found this one to have some key issues in terms of tactical description. One of the main assets for Guardiola in the 3:0 win over Bayern was John Stones as a second pivot with Rodri which you made look like he is part of a back four. That meant that the 3 atb were slightly more narrow, Bernardo and Grealish hence dropped deeper into the half spaces and the space in behind the CM’s was actually covered by Stones. Crucial tactical point that you missed out on in my opinion
