    I picked up a Roscoe 8 about a month ago and I'm loving it so far. It's been a great trail bike and is definitely way more capable than I am.

    • @snowman22ism

      How is it on climbing? With a 65* head angle and only a 73* seat tube angle, it sounds like it could be a tough bike to climb with.

    • @rgrange180
      @rgrange180 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@snowman22ism I think it climbs real well, but I am in between a large and m/l and went with a m/l. It probably would be more difficult to climb with a larger size. Most of the trails I liked are slower technical stuff so I'm usually out of the saddle when I'm climbing though.

    I picked one up beginning of July 2024, had one XL in blue in the box and guy put together right in front of me. He even upgraded the cables to stainless steel and trued up wheels and tighten spikes up a bit. He also moved one of the handlebar stem spacers below with the rest to raise handlebars up a little. So far I’m loving the Roscoe 8

      The old Roscoe plus bike used the same frame as the X-Caliber. So even the new X-Caliber still uses the 141 axle. Don't understand why because even other bike companies Specialized, Cannondale and Giant all use 148 on comparable bikes. And Trek came up with 148 anyway.

      @Mat Jj one more thing. Wherever you purchase yours, ask them to set the fork SAG settings to your body weight and build. The air charge - based upon how you sit on the bike - determines SAG. They went to the RockShox website for the spec. Mine was set to 20% SAG, I believe.

      Buy an airshock pump. With a pump you can dial in the settings exactly how you want, which may change based on seasons and extra gear your wearing, or like me changing weight through the year. I have the RockShox digital pump and it easily lets you make changes to 0.1 PSI by slightly over pumping and then purging / bumping air out while connected.

    So, is it worth going for the Roscoe 9 over the 8? Over here in Europe, the price increase from a 7 (€1,699) to an 8 (€2,399) is +€700. Yet, to upgrade from an 8 to a 9 (€2,399) is only another +€300. For this premium the 9 gets a Fox Rhythm 36, Shimano SLX/ XT, and general improvements which lead to a ca.500g weight save over the 8. Therefore, if one is prepared to pay €2,399 for the 8, does it make sense to just fork out the extra €300 and get the 9?

    • @robertpeters6108
      @robertpeters6108 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I would say yes definitely it is worth it. You may heard this before but will say again, it is always less expensive to buy a package rather than buying separate components, so always better to buy the best bike you can afford from the start, especially if you plan to upgrade. Because yes the upgrades you get from the 9 will cost much more than 300 if you buy separately. But for someone who is really on a tight budget, upgrading gradually can also make sense to be able to eat and pay the bills lol! That's why the saying goes; buy the best you can afford. Some People can afford building their dream bike from the get go and will purchase a frame set alone and personally choose each component they want on the bike.

    At first I wanted to interject and say the Santa Cruz Chameleon is a better deal, but really I was wrong....and finally they're putting T/As. I bought an 22 X-caliber 9 in the blue to yellow fade for my wife because that's the bike she wanted (for the color), and was really annoyed to find a "Boost 141 QR. The spec is incredibly good with XT/SLX 12sp drivetrain otherwise.
    This spec is quite good for the price. I do believe the Giant Fathom should be considered when looking at this though. The difference being that Giant is using house brand components for the dropper and fork...and the drivetrain is a step down, but w/ the price difference it could easily be a step up if the same amount of money was spent. That said.....I prefer the geometry on this bike over the Fathom...I never really got along with super steep seat tubes on hardtails. I stand and pedal a lot and it always feels like the saddle isn't far enough back out of the way. ~73-74 is fine but 75+ no bueno...

But this is not like in the early 90s anymore when the CEO‘s of the small American bike brands were still riding themselves… the Taiwanese workers don’t go biking (or mountain biking for that matter) and therefore have no own experience what is important in a bike. They simply go to work, work their 8-10 hours and go home on their couch. Well, the golden era of mountain bikes is long gone, unfortunately !

    • @marcdemichele2689
      @marcdemichele2689 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      With the extended reach "modern geometry" is headed I think a super steep seat tube angle would make this bike feel a bit unbalanced. There are always give and takes with bike geometry. The short chainstays allow the seat tube angle to remain in the 73-75 degree angle and still keep the bike planted in climbs as well as descents. If the chainstays were longer the ST angle would be steeper. The store I work at sells these and the folks that have bought this bike seem to really dig it. I wish it were a bit lighter, but these days a stock rig at under 30lbs is considered acceptable.

    • @thesilversender

      @@mseekles1972 that will lean you forward more but it wont get you closer to the bars. Looking further down in the comments someone wrote that the real effective seat angle is actually 75. This is much closer to the modern geo that we have been seeing lately but still not especially steep. The current trend is 77-78. I am not sure if the 77-78 is better as I have not ridden anything greater than 76 but I know that 73 is way too slack for the longer reach of these newer bikes.

    • @mseekles1972
      @mseekles1972 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thesilversender that was exactly my point, in reality the bike has a much steeper seat tube angle when you’re riding it, because it’s a hardtail, which will benefit the climbing/peddling efficiency. In comparison, It’s slacker then a slash or top fuel but those are fullsus bikes bit it’s steeper then a supercaliber / x caliber. If you find the bike to long, and you’re to far of the bars then I would look at another size / reach number, they have a size ML which pretty much fits me perfectly.

    73* is not a steep seattube angle. 76* degrees would be a steep seattube which is what this bike needs to have modern geometry. As is, it's just mediocre. Does Trek pay James to make these videos? It's a classic sales technique to oversell the weak feature which is the 73* seatube angle.
